My first serious girlfriend had PCOS. It’s awful. She went from around 140 lbs. at age 16 to well over 200 by age 19. She had a lot of cramps and pains, her menstrual cycle was super out of whack, and she had a lot of other associated problems. Several doctors dismissed her issues as simply due to being overweight despite these problems coinciding with, not following, her weight gain. I think her 3rd OB-GYN finally took her issues seriously and eventually diagnosed her with PCOS.
"It's because you're overweight" or "You're too young to have a hormone imbalance"
Can't count how many doctors told variations of those two phrases to me
I stopped counting eventually
"Women's" health issues need to be taken more seriously by medical professionals
@@janeeyre1990it’s drives me fucking insane. It took me 2 years to get a diagnosis of pcos and fibromyalgia, despite having symptoms of both the entire time, because “you’re just fat” or “it’s just anxiety”.

its not just women. I had bad leg pain since I was 17 and was told it was growing pains by 5 different doctors. now I'm much older and don't need a doc to tell my I have sciatic nerve issues, likely permanent damage because I wasn't diagnosed and treated at the first sign of symptoms. Still can't get a doc to take my sleep and fatigue issues seriously, its to a point where I genuinely too afraid to see a doc. I'll just be going to be told nothing is wrong with me and have my money taken for nothing.@@janeeyre1990

PCOS is an absolute nightmare. It’s debilitating and a complete danger to women’s overall physical and mental health. It’s completely under researched, which will never make sense to me. Please do. I have suffered from PCOS since I was an adolescent.
My sister has PCOS. She started gaining excessive amounts of weight when she was in 7th grade. She was horrified when she started growing a beard in her late teens. She had to shave regularly. She's never been able to have children. She finally was able to have electrolysis in her 30s. It's not a joke. It's been tragic for her.

Every time I try to get help for my condition (or any other women’s health issue) I get turned away and indirectly told I’m crazy. My mom has PCOS, my sister has PCOS, and almost every female in my family has it. When I went to the dr with symptoms such as rapid weight gain (60 lbs), new facial hair, hair on my chest, large ovarian cysts (I even had one surgically removed), irregular periods, and infertility/miscarriages . They told me it’s impossible I have PCOS because I had a baby. Mind you I had my son at 16 before I had all these symptoms. I hate America’s health care system. I hate that women are not taken seriously by doctors. I hate how I can’t even look at myself in the mirror anymore.
I’m an (presumably because they could not tell at birth but we both share almost the same health conditions in varying degrees) identical twin. At the age of 12, we both started menstruating and began growing beards. Our periods were extremely heavy, to the point where we often had to have extra pairs of pants and underwear stored at the school nurse’s office. I had very severe ovulation pain, my twin did not. I never thought much of it because it was weird and made little sense, but about two weeks before my very first period, I had an “episode” while I was in the shower where a feeling of doom washed over me, I had an immediate feeling of deja vu, saw strange images in my field of vision, my hands shook, and I would feel very tired and uncoordinated for a few minutes to hours after. I would have hundreds of these episodes up until high school when my sister and I had our annual appointment with our doctor. I finally decided to bring it up because I never told my mom and sister about them, only to find out that my twin was having them too, but to a significantly less degree than I was. I had at least 1 to 10 episodes every two weeks, almost all of which occurred while I was in the shower and when I was either ovulating or on my period. My PCP told us we had a severe type of migraine aura involving the brain stem and prescribed Sumatriptan at the highest dosage. The drug did nothing but put us to sleep. During our middle and high school years, we had to pluck our chin hairs, mustaches, and sideburns almost daily. Despite being honors students, this made us easy targets for bullying. We were given blood tests and only had slightly elevated testosterone, with my sister’s being higher than mine. We were told to take our temperature every morning for three months to determine our ovulation activity. I ovulated every single month and suffered extreme pain each time. My sister did not ovulate at all. She was diagnosed with PCOS and I was not. We were placed on different birth control prescriptions but there was no improvement to the Hirsutism. The only benefit was a reduction in the severity of our periods. Despite the purpose of birth control being to stop ovulation, I never stopped, despite many different prescriptions. We just dealt with the hairiness, although my sister’s had an origin with PCOS and mine had no reason. The weird episodes I had decreased throughout the latter years of high school and we both graduated near the top of our class. It was when we became adults and got jobs that I started seeing an increase to the episodes. From 2011 to 2012, they followed the same pattern, but also began happening during the day while I was working. Because Sumatriptan put me to sleep, I had to leave work each time, which was embarrassing. Then they tapered off again between 2013 to 2016. In 2015, I began working at a retail pharmacy. In 2017, I would have about two episodes a day over the course of five days, the they would repeat two weeks later. I began having one and the pharmacist questioned me afterwards. I told her they were migraines, and she told me that the behavior more resembled a seizure. I began doing research and found a condition called Catamenial Epilepsy, which are seizures that only occur during ovulation and menstruation. I saw a neurologist and was very quickly diagnosed with it. This explained why my sister had far less episodes than me; she rarely ovulated, which for me represented almost an entire week where I was vulnerable. I stopped the useless Sumatriptan and began taking Trileptal instead. I saw immediate relief. Due to low frequency of episodes, my sister was merely diagnosed with having Catamenial seizures as opposed to having raw epilepsy in the way that I have it. My neurologist believes that the slightly elevated testosterone levels and Hirsutism play only a role in my sister’s lack of seizures. She has more testosterone than I do, and is lucky to ovulate a few times a year. She is triggered far less. However, I have a female-only form of epilepsy, but also have slightly elevated levels of testosterone and Hirsutism. Why? I still do not have an answer to this day.
Wow. What an ordeal.😮
wow, the comment is longer than Citadel of Heights and Depths.
What was your diet like as a child before you began menstruation?
What kind of water did you drink?
What hormones were in your foods?
Thank you for sharing your story
I have extremely similar episodes as you described with the doom, deja-vu, loss of coordination and vision impairments. I sometimes lose the ability to speak properly and one side of my body becomes tingly and numb. I have always been told it’s just migraines. This is interesting. I’ve had multiple surgeries for endometriosis and was cleared from epilepsy in a test. It’s crazy how many symptoms cross over but I truly believe hormone dysfunction in women causes so many things and we don’t even understand the half of it. I hope we get answers one day.

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 35 years ago by two different doctors. I was trying to get pregnant. The disease has a lot of downsides, but I used some of it to my advantage. Interesting. Makes me wonder. If you were to compete professionally, would your T level be above permissible limit?

Ik this is late but figured I should share. I am an intersex (have parts of both sexes) person. I really appreciate how you entertainingly discuss medical issues. I would really like if you discuss more hormonal issues bc they are really unknown and under-researched.
I have a friend who is intersex, and these topics are very rare to find, it seems! I hope Emu will cover more hormone and reproductive differences, since it's interesting and important to talk about people who are so often misunderstood or dismissed for something they didn't choose.
@@aazhie yep. it’s infuriating how little people know about hormonal issues. It’s insane how obscure hormonal issues and other related problems are. It’s even worse for people like me bc there’s way more coverage on PCOS and the likes. Intersexism really needs more help. I am plagued with hormonal issues and usually am sick when I would be on my period if I had ovaries but theres quite literally nothing that the medical system can do to help me.
@@thesovietunion9542 how is he going to talk about something there is little information about? He didnt create or find any of the information he mentioned, just mentioning the results…. Hormones are strange and for intersex people…. Even stranger still. All the best to you, as you really have no template to look at to follow healthy lifestyles…. Hormone supressing therapy is something good to try atleast. Dont give up.
Unfortunately intersex is being brushed under the carpet by transgenderism, where you cannot control the hormonal issues going on in your body the main topic in this area is about people taking hormones to change their body. I would have hoped the issue would have changed over time more to people who are actually intersex and their struggles rather than just people who believe they are in the wrong body, but only time will tell.
I would be really interested to hear about your feelings about co-oping of intersex-specific language like afab and amab by the transgender community? I am wary about it because it's not exactly accurate (an amab trans woman is not just assigned male but is of the male sex ) but I am not intersex or transgender so would feel odd having a negative opinion.

Got a diagnosis of pcos at 16, was given a birth control (Given absolutely no warning about clots) arm hurt for 24 hrs, thought i pulled something. Suddenly arm stopped hurting and my chest got tighter. At 23 I had a pulmonary embolism. if I wasn't with my mom idk what would've happened. Know the signs, know the possible side effects/risks of your medication. Be safe
As someone who has PCOS, it can be really shocking to wake up with facial hair! My PCOS developed when I was 20, with no other adrenal disorders prior. I always had a regular, 28 day cycle, and could actually predict my upcoming menses, before they happened with incredible accuracy. I experienced a very sudden, traumatic-type of event before I developed the PCOS, so I've been wondering if that had set everything off. But now, at age 39, I've managed to become more sensitive to insulin, can't seem to lose weight, though and had miscarried almost 2 years ago. Every doctor I've been to has actually refused to see if I might have an underlying thyroid condition, other than checking my TSH levels, which are always in the "normal range." I still feel like something is off, despite this. I've been told "eat less, exercise more", which isn't a solution, because I already barely eat anything and have very little energy to exercise. Although, my energy is a bit better than it was for 17 years.
Push with thyroid - My TSH is „normal“ but without Levothyroxine I gain weight even when not eating, lose my hair and my skin is a mess…
I can be on Ozempic and if I decrease Levothyroxine dosage I will still gain weight… fight for it - ask to at least try thyroid treatment because TSH is often misleading if there are symptoms.

ProdCharles I never Thought That you would watch this channel
Anecdotally, I've known many friends, colleges or friends of friends who have, at one time or another, been "diagnosed" with PCOS. I'm not saying these women did not have PCOS. My intent is to point out that the stringent ruling out of other conditions was rarely, if ever, pursued. Most of the time it played out in the following way:
--Painful and irregular periods that can literally incapacitate, weight gain and hair growth get to the point where women ask their Doc or gynecologist for help.
--Almost invariably the first step is to prescribe hormonal birth control(even for celibate, asexual folks, or lesbians)to regulate the menstrual cycle and attempt to alleviate the other symptoms with no hormone tests or blood work.
--If any relief is experienced, a diagnosis of PCOS is made and they are told they may need fertility treatment to get pregnant among other issues like increased diabetes and cancer risk. Generally, nothing more is done unless significant symptoms persist or hospitalization occurs.
On the upside, a recent study suggests a treatment is possible and human trials are set to begin soon. www.nature.com/articles/s41591-018-0035-5

Haley Flanagan majority of women have it ...a treatment but not a cure lol . It’s very complicated . You can correct with birth control and merformin
There should definitely be a lot more education about hormone disorders -- especially when learning about puberty in school -- because the symptoms are tricky sometimes. I'm so happy you have an understanding of what's going on in your body, so that you can take care of your health.
Med student here. Hormones are VERY sensitive to change and a LOT of people have hormone imbalances. You're not alone and there are things out there to help you: medicines, support groups, ect. Dont ever let anyone bring you you down, you are human like the rest of us. You're an amazing anomaly called life and live it to the best you can! Have fun, be free, and always do what your heart tells you to, life is too short not to!
my whole family has pcos and my diagnosis was either endometriosis or pcos or both but they just assumed pcos because it’s in my family. there’s no cures but many treatments. i’m on seasonel birthcontrol where i get very few periods for the pain and the extreme heavy blood flow. i have a better chance at being fertile than my sisters and i’ve offered to be a seroget for them. my sister had a cyst the size of a basket ball and they thought she was 3 months pregnant. it sucks but there’s ways to deal with it. just is hard on the image
This guy is good and seems genuine when telling us to be well

5 things I've learnt from all of these medical videos
1) -Emia meaning presence in blood
2) -Hyper meaning high
3) -Hypo menacing low
4) One thing can cause 10 trillion other things to happen
5) Always go visit the hospital if you do something that causes something bad
6) Mitochondria is power house of a cell
You forgot Hyperlavalampemia
Itis- inflammation
Hyper- and hypo- are actually prefixes!
7) Modern medicine is always more impressive than you expect

"A girl is presented to emergency room with a beard" ... I know it is serious, but it seems the start of a bad joke.
She presented to the ER with sleepwalking. This statement made me wonder if she just walked to the hospital one night.
Lol
A girl is presented to emergency room with a beard. She says to me that my beard is nice and i reply to her "thanks, you to". She didn't correct me..
I want to commend you for the effort you put into these films and for the level of professionalism with which you discuss the cases.

I suffer from PCOS and it has fucked up my self esteem beyond repair (yeay). What constantly amazes me is that so many ppl, even doctors, have never heard of it, even though up to 10% of all women are affected.
Ur self esteem can he repaired. Have a look at marissa peers on here xx
I had to diagnose myself after seeing it on tv. Because doctors didn't give a fuck during all the years that I described my symptoms.
I'm shocked! I'm so sorry for you but sadly you're not alone!
I've found doctors don't know what's Sphincter of Oddi is!
My paramedic didn't know what cholecystectomy was!!
Just to give you hope, I suffered from PCOS from age 12 to 37, it is like a torture cell. I suffered from most of the symptoms mentioned here and my body rejected metformin But today I have two beautiful boys and my PCOS is controlled if not gone. So keep the faith and workout 4 days a week.
I am so dearly sorry for you :( I know it doesn't help a lot to say with time and patience to get it treated that things can get better but as a pre-everything trans masculine individual who... doesn't pass at all I can kinda sympathize if in the opposite direction. I wish I could help you more or trade you somehow cause while the health issues are not good for anyone, it does indeed suck to feel so self conscious about your appearance. Know that you are cared about and still an amazing beautiful person though. Even if you may not feel like it. And screw the doctors that wrote you off like that, that's so frustrating.
one minute in and I had the diagnosis down, as a fellow PCOS sufferer I could empathize on so many things
Jasmine Watts me too
Yeah same here
Same doe. I had the diagnosis down just by the title...
empathize ?
Jasmine Watts same
This video is enlightening as to how much doctors have to learn. Human anatomy, and chemistry are very complex in my mind.
I dont know the words but you make the logic make so much sense! I appreciate your intelligence so much.

A girl suddenly grew ovaries. This is what happened to her beard.
Watching this video 2 years ago, for the first time, made me schedule my first appointment with a gynaecologist, because I could see myself in most of the symptoms described in the video. I’ve been diagnosed with PCOS ever since. I didn’t even think about the possibility of having it, although my family has a LONG history of ovaries related health issues. I will never be able to thank you enough for making this video and explaining what PCOS is about in a way that even non doctors or medicine students can understand it ❤
Love ❤️❤️ your channel and 💕💕 the happy ending stories. You are doing a great service by the information your sharing please don't ever stop thank you
