As someone who drives a "chair van" transporting mostly elderly patients to doctor's appointments and dialysis centers all day long I can tell you that some of them really don't wanna go back to the facility which literally puts them in a dorm room which they have to share with another person. Some are literally telling me multiple times that they hate it and don't want to go there in hopes that I'm not gonna take them back. Some nursing homes hate them so much that they literally make them sign a DNR (MOLST form in MA). The thing is they tell them to check off "do not resuscitate, do not intubate or ventilate, do not use non-invasive ventilate (CPAP), but they tell them to check off Transfer to Hospital. The thing is if they die in route, EMTs/Paramedics have to bring them back to the facility because the hospital doesn't need a corpse that they can't resuscitate (or even try to). It's hard seeing that form because you know they tricked them into doing that in hopes they die quickly and they won't even have to deal with the corpse. Since I recently passed my NREMT, I'm going to be working for the same copmany but as an EMT and I feel like I'm gonna see that even more often. Either way, 95% of all the nursing homes especially "public" ones are really fucking terible and give zero fucks about old people.
@@Origina1Name Yeah, the nursing home industry is so fucking scummy but because American cities are so inaccessible both indoors and out it makes it almost impossible for people to age in place.

Aw, this one hits home, with Grandma trying not to bother anyone with her pain. My grandma had a medical alert button, but she spent two days on the floor after a fall because she was too proud to call for help and didn't want to be a bother. My grandma, who was over 80 when this happened, slipped and fell on ice, got her leg ran over on accident by my grandpa who was backing his car up (he told her to wait elsewhere, she didn’t listen). While in the hospital healing, she got sick. After less than six months, she was walking around again with a cane and as healthier than can be. This happened after she had several hip replacements. My other grandma has slipped on ice and broken her arm or wrist several times now. Everyone of my grandparents, despite now in or nearing their 90s, is in much better health than is expected of them. The help I’ve fallen is a genuine joke in my family because they keep falling on ice just let the rest of us do but usually can get right back up 😭

Working at a nursing home for about a decade plus, it's definitely the falls that turn our walking residents into wheelchair-bound, aid-dependent on care folks. A simple fall greatly diminishes their quality of life and have seen time and time again its effects on our elderly folks. They dramatically change and it speeds up their demise, sadly. It's one of the events we are very much hypervigilant.
What a considerate grandma though. "She didn't wanna ruin her grandchildren's day."
It's really not considerate though :/. "Grandma had to go to the doctor on Easter" is way less traumatic for the grandkids than "Grandma has permanent brain damage." And she could have easily died, too, which would be even worse!

[...] She was reluctant to ruin her grandchildren's day, she kept quiet in the other room." 😭😭😭😭😭
Imagine almost dying because you pushed too hard to get a poo out
I had a lizard that happened to. I felt horrible.

It’s actually not as uncommon as it might sound at first; the Valsalva manoeuvre (what happens in your body as you are straining to poop, lifting improperly, in childbirth, anything that causes an increase in intrathoracic pressure - that ‘bearing down’ feeling) can cause a significant increase, and often a sudden significant increase, in pressure that can result in the breaking of the ‘weakest link’, to put it in a Reader’s Digest version. It can lead to several different problems, and afaik, it’s not something the human body can get used to, or build up, like a muscle. It’s generally not a good idea to get in the habit at all. If you or anyone you know is having to strain to poop, it’s a good idea to talk that over with a doctor to avoid causing greater problems down the line. HTH.

Hey Laura how old are you?
YEah this is a weird vid. Chocolate really had nothing to do with it. It could've been anything that gave her a stomach ache, or in fact it she may have regularly pushed hard to get stool out and this just happened to be the final straw.
@@JohnnyNatrium Age = less gastric motility, i.e slowed bowel movements, chocolate is hard to digest and slows movement even more, which increases contact with the bowels, drawing water out of the stools, hardening it. That in turn caused her to push harder, and due to her blood vessels having weakened from menopause and pushing harder makes the heart beat harder/faster, the blood pressure in her brain became too much for the vessel in her brain, rupturing it. This was explained in the video and is the cause.

I got choked up at the part about seniors falling and never waking from surgery. That's how my grandma went. She wasn't supposed to walk without her walker, but the nursing home staff made her move to another chair without it, while they gossiped and ignored her struggles. She fell. She seemed out of before the surgery in the morning, we thought it was just from the pain meds, but then she never really woke up. It was a horrible lingering death.
Im sorry 🫂🫂🫂
My girlfriend's grandma has suffered a similar fate. The fact that this happens regularly and they get away with it is horrible.
@@_chirp_6108 I'm sorry.
This hit WAY to close to
home friend. My great Oma died when she fell out of bed trying to get to her wheelchair, she was a double above the knee amputee. Like the rest if us Schiller’s. She fell on her face and died alone, and with a smashed in face. My mom had L4/S1 fused a week before I moved out to WY for work. She got terrible care at the hospital she was at. She was moved into a rehab center (nursing home) that I helped pick out for her ( so guilty). The last night I was packing the last of my stuff up and I got a call she fell. Here no one would help her go to the bathroom so she got up and used a wheelchair to get into the bathroom. After she was done she used the wheelchair as a “crutch” to try and get her back up off the can. She fell and hit her ass on the edge of the toilet. It broke her right S1 screw clean out of the bone. She kept yowling in pain and everyone including my fam thought she was addicted to the drugs. Here she had a broken spine and a 3 inch long Ti screw knocking around. She goes in next month to see MY surgeon.
Its a sign of the times. Understaffed hospitals and nursing homes + kids these days don’t care. I know when I go to the hospital I always pack a bag like I’m packing to go camping. Food, water, extra clothes, extra drugs, bathroom stuff etc. Its better to rehab at home if possible.
Great videos. Minor correction from an orthopedic surgeon here: when geriatric patients have hip fractures the choice isn’t between risk of anesthesia and “lifestyle change” from a broken hip as you suggest. Risk of aspiration etc are way more likely to occur in patients with an unfixed hip as it requires about 4 to 6 weeks of bedrest to heal on its own, greatly putting old patients at risk of aspiration, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, sacral decubitus ulcers. While mortality is about 30% for hip fractures, it’s nearly 100% for those which aren’t fixed. Modern day treatments for geriatric hip fractures are all designed to have 1 hour or less of surgical time and allow immediate weight bearing, meaning the patients are gotten up and sitting up in a chair by day 1 after surgery. In fact, delay of surgery by more than 48h since injury is a big risk factor for death. With a nearly 100% chance of dying without surgery, essentially only the patients who are not expected to survive the anesthesia are treated nonoperatively. The risk of anesthesia for the vast majority of patients, even those who are 100 with severe underlying health issues is worth it compared to almost certain death without surgery. Not getting surgery isn’t about the impact on the older persons lifestyle; it’s about preventing death.
Thanks for the info!
And, most elderly fall due to the hip fracturing first, correct?
You're very good at presenting these cases.
As someone who loves learning about toxicology, and had big dres of one day becoming a medical examiner, but changed my mind in favour of something else I can easily say that this has quickly become one of my favourite channels! It's palatable and the way in which the cases are presented are dynamic.
Amazing job, love this.
Man drinks 25 hours worth of 5 hour energy in one day. This is how spacetime collapsed.
The f2p Pyro I wouldnt be shocked if it were true, my brother went through a phase where he barely slept cause he thought it was a waste of time. So that person couldve felt the same, but went overboard. Not sleeping for even 3 or 4 days can kill you.
The f2p Pyro The absolute limit someone can go without sleep (at least those without fatal famial insomnia) is 11 days. However he could very easily die in that time especially if he was physically old or weak beforehand.
Brandon Boynton i shotgunned one whole in like 3 seconds and literally felt NOTHING. I felt so betrayed😂
Brandon Boynton The toppest of keks to you sir
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
I’m a forensic autopsy tech and we see what happens when this doesn’t end with recovery. I love medical Monday! Great vid once again
Jane Doe Is that why you chose Jane Doe as your Username?
Jane Doe she only wanted to have a goood easter!
Thank you, sir, for this brilliant video!
That’s so sad. The fact that she’s just trying to have fun with her family, but she feels extreme pain.

A 15 year old boy posted a Victory Royale on Snapchat.
This is how he kept his virginity
bruhhhh 😂😂😂
CSTorres yay i have not yet got a victory royale
Why is a 15 year old meant to lose his virginity ?
hahaha fair point
Good
He is only 15 years of age
I feel bad for these people who were just trying make their grandchildren happy and only made ' a recovery' or ate pasta and died.
Whereas tiktokers drinking benadryl and a child eating tide pods make a full recovery
An elderly woman, who happened to be a grandma, ate a pound of chocolate and was about to die. Doctors fed her one box of Tide Pods over a 6 hour period and she made a full recovery.
You forgot "haha, I drank so much coffee, my pee is turning into coffee"
These people like grandma and a dad in this channel are literally dumb. They have thumbing and numbing headaches and very painful stomach aches but they stay quiet, "JuST tO NOt disSAPOint their cHilDREn"
as a very troubled child, i took a ton of benadryl when i was 12 (didn't care about the difference between DPH and DXM) and it was so terrible. these videos make me feel a lot ngl
to clarify it was just to get high, which imo makes it worse
Thank you Dr. Bernard for these videos. One should get educated about their body and how to take care of their body and you definitely help to facilitate this. Thank you Sir! "Take care of yourself and... be well!"
I love being told when I’ve arrived to the emergency room. You didn’t say it in some of the earlier videos, so I’m like “Wait, are we in the emergency room now, or what??”
Human body is so fragile. We can even die by producing more pressure while shitting
Shilp Mehta well some more fragile than others, human body can be put to under huge stress and still make it. It's subjective how fragile someone is.
Bruce Willis not if we developed cyborg/ medical technology. We could live much longer.
Why did i laugh at this
Llaneel Yort have fun

You are the best story teller. I'm always on edge listening to you.
Much more engaging than an episode of "House"..no "fluff" and just as much interesting medical stuff.
He speaks way too fast & too dramatically - you need a cup of tea after 5mins listening to this bloke
Plus he gives understanding to the prefixes and suffixes in the medical world
