  • Times have been tough. So how can I make 1k in art sales in four days and hate it? Watch, and I will explain how I came to this point.
I want to be clear. I am thankful for the work as it keeps my business afloat. I am trying to make the point that for an artist, making art goes above the money. But at the same time, an artist cannot survive long without being aware of the business side of selling artwork. This is the balance that every artist must find.

I can really relate to many things you’ve shared. I sold $300 of wood burning ornaments at Christmas but then came to a stand still. Also love the ASL ! I’ve taken a couple years myself and it is a wonderful thing to know. It keeps our mind healthy with many different ways of learning

I have found your correct in a lot of what you have found. I think the main problem Pyrography artists have, is we put long hours into the work we do, and of course, we feel we cannot sell them for peanuts, as we have to cover the costs of the long hours that can go into doing this type of work and we attempt to make it worthwhile, so we sell them at a calculated cost and there`s our problem. Chinese or other production companies can "print similar things " en mass "for a much smaller cost, so many people today, in general, will prefer to buy printed types of work rather than Custom types of work, hence we then lose out to them. I`m afraid it's the nature of the beast of the modern world we live in. Thirty or more years ago we could have sold at good prices, but with things as they are today people put cheapness over custom work, and I think it is because they still end up with what we do, but the custom side of it gets overlooked as not being important any longer, this is why in my country where I live, I just do bits and bobs and sell to people who prefer custom done over mass-produced which sadly there aren't many, and to be honest, that suits me fine. I now just accept it plus I can just do pyrography at my leisure pace rather than under pressure to get work done fast.
But I personally would suggest anyone going into Pyrography thinking they can make a good living out of it should think very carefully.

So many echoes of my journey with pencil drawings back in the early 2000's when i was on the craft fayre circuit. Totally get you, people buy what you don't particularly want to create, while absolutely loving what you want to create but not buying them. IT totally broke me for years. Just do what feels right for you.

I am just starting woodburning, but I understand your feelings. Art takes passion and inspo…sadly what makes us passionate and inspired isn’t always what sells. I sell mostly the same 2 items over and over. I am always grateful because I have kids and need money, but wow can it suck all the joy from the creative process. I try and make little gifts to include to keep me sane lol

Exactly! The goal is to find what sells and what you enjoy.
