You can be successful or famous, but it doesn’t mean that you’re “better” than anyone else. The boss and the cleaning staff have their fika together at the same table. The doctor or principal has to clean their own coffee cup the same as everyone else. The movie star has to stand in the same queue as the nurse in the grocery store. 😊
Jantelagen is misportrayed quite a lot imo. You can be successful. In fact, be as successful as you possibly can. Just don't be boastful about it, it's unbecoming. Also, don't think that just because you have success in one domain, that you are somehow more than anyone else in any other domain. If you're #1 world ranked in Tennis, that don't mean squat when we're meeting in a social setting. It's an interresting topic of discussion, yes, but everyone attending this gathering probably has something interresting about them.
Jag har aldrig visat leg för att köpa en lott . Har jag aldrig hört talas om.. svenskt är att man tex bjuder ofta hem sina vänner på fika. Kaffe ☕. Åker till varandra för en kopp kaffe ☕ och tjata lite .
Some have a negative meaning of lagom. And merge it with Jante. For me its a very good word just positive . Its not too much its not too Little not too hot not too cold. Lagom is like perfect but more laid back less pretentious and with less pressure. Lagom is what is perfect just for you at the moment.
Most of them seems correct, however that we're afraid of saying hi to strangers must be a city thing (malmö, göteborg, stockholm) As where i live in the north, we always say hi to eachother strangers or not. It's not uncommon that when you've said hi to the same person 2-3 time at random times you'll casually strike a conversation since you cross the same paths so often.
You will probably fit well in Sweden. My father came from England (Hull, many ages ago), and he said that "Sweden has some damn good comedians and comedy, Maybe even better then Brittish, but you have to learn the language first, to understand the finer details". He also said that the comedy, satire and parody are quite similar in many ways, comparing England and Sweden, and often feel like a punch in the gut, and If a country has good comedy, then it is populated by good people. After he came here he never left, till his end. Cheers.
in what ways are they different, can you elaborate on the not so obvious differences like the weather? and what has your own experience been like when going to southern sweden, I mean how southern are we talking, everything beneath norrland? Or are you referring specifically to the northenmost part of the country when you say "north of sweden"?
If you come to Stockholm in summertime (May-September ) you can come have a fika in my boat! This is a serious invitation! I can show you what Stockholm looks like from the water. Its 14 islands so many locals have boats to get around the archipelago and lake Mälaren. Im being serious. id be super happy to! 😊 👍
People who usually say that "you're not allowed to be to successful in this country" or that people are jealous or petty, are usually the same people who don't want to pay any tax because they'll get taxed higher than others etc.
Success is fine but considered a bit crass if you show off too much. All of Scandinavia have a "Jantelag" of sorts, which is just an unwritten rule to not brag, or show off your success because you're 'not better than anyone'. Might be a bit extreme if taken too literally, but it's a good rule of thumb for staying humble and not look down on others.
It does NOT rain a lot where I live in Sweden. Quite the opposite. Sometimes there can be weeks before there's any rain, and the grass is nearly dying. Skellefteå, Västerbotten. :)
Yeah I agree with most of these things. Grew up in southern Sweden but have family and lived a long time in the northern parts as well. About the jealousy I'd say yes, it's true but here comes the flavour; I feel like most Swedes live by the Jantelag (= don't think you're something you're not, adapt and fit in) but we all want to be strong and independent and successful so in my experience most Swedes compare a lot and are very competitive. HOWEVER because of the Jantelag we don't like to show it or brag, we love to humble brag and most of us make fun of ourselves or friends when joking, and we compare ourselves a LOT with the "competition" mostly in a negative way towards ourselves. But the younger generations tend to be more aware of it so it has become more talked about and accepted to see a professional to help with that way of thinking. I'm a 90's kid, in my thirties, and I feel our generation was the first proper generation to question the self loathing/jealousy and try to do something about it.
10:16 hahah im dying of laughter because its so true im litterly here watching your videos to hear you say good things about Sweden and see you learn about it. When i meet someone thats not from Sweden i tend to always talk about Swedish stuff. Damn i never tought about it until now damn its so true.
8:27 absolutely, that sort of shame is real. As someone who grew up in one of the wealthiest suburbs in Sweden but went to school in town, I always felt the need to lie about where I lived. Or just avoid the question entirely 🙈. And the few times it actually came out, you actually did feel the mood shift negatively.
5:45 missunsam to me is not a typical word I'd use to describe being envious, a more accurate word for it would be "avundsjuk" also meaning jealous. In this context I just think it refers to an unwillingness to get along due to certain stigma, an actual definition of the word "missunsam" is as follows; "The perception that others do not deserve a certain privilege that they have or feel they inhibit an inherent right to have"
The "Law of Jante" is a cultural concept rooted in Scandinavian societies, describing an unwritten set of rules discouraging individualism and self-promotion. It emphasizes humility, equality, and conformity, often summarized as "Don't think you're better than anyone else." This mindset is thought to have ties to the Lutheran tradition, which prioritized modesty, hard work, and the avoidance of pride. Additionally, it reflects the historical need for social harmony in small, agrarian communities where collaboration ensured survival. The term originates from Aksel Sandemose's 1933 novel A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks, but it has since been interpreted as both a cultural critique and a reflection of Scandinavian values.
The age limit on energy drinks is a recommendation from the grocery store trade organization implemented at a time when kids overindulged in the stuff which had proven detrimental to your health if drinking more than for instance one can.
I looked at a comparison between Stockholm and London a few years ago, and that year it was the same amount of rain in both cities; just that Stockholm was colder. However, I don't know if that was the exception or the norm.
10:56. Jantelagen is a unwritten Swedish law, which says that you must not stand out and think that you are better than others in any way. Jantelagen is like what you said at 7:53. - 9:36. You just misstock it for the Swedish word Lagom. Lagom means. Not to much and not to little (just enough/just the right amount). Like when you have the perfect amount of food on your plate. It's neither to much nor to little It's just "lagom".
Many typical Swedish answer. Talk bad about ourselves and our country. Sure I not wanna say hi to every people that I meet, talk to everyone? Swedish calls that to be scared! Lol
The only way i could describe the word "Lagom" is to think of it as the Goldilock zone , not too hot and not too cold just perfect. Obviously this is just my interpretation of the word :D
The 10 rules of Jantelagen You're not to think you are anything special. You're not to think you are as good as we are. You're not to think you are smarter than we are. You're not to imagine yourself better than we are. You're not to think you know more than we do. You're not to think you are more important than we are. You're not to think you are good at anything. You're not to laugh at us. You're not to think anyone cares about you. You're not to think you can teach us anything.
The id card thing is to help people help themselves (ie alcoholics, gambling addicts, underage youngsters) by controlling or putting checka on the means of distribution of potentially harmful products.
I'm old, so I never have to show my ID buying anything :) But I have never ever in my life had to show ID, not even when I was on vacation in the US. I was 20 then but I could buy drinks, no problem.
What I would say is typical swedish is to hold grudges and opinions to yourself, this often leads to a lot if gossip instead of confrontation. Writing comments like this is very un-swedish and my friends probably think my hundreds of TikTok comments are weird
Every time i watch these i feel like the people are trying to tell me im not Swedish despite being born and raised there 😂i dont recognise several of the things they say as typical swedes because it does not match where i live. I often say hello to strangers i meet, many times they say hello before i have a chance to do so. Several things is accurate though like "lagom", "jantelagen"-dont brag or you will be resented by those who dont have or cant do what you brag about. And "fika" not nesesary coffie though, just sitting down with a beverage of any type is still counted as a fika. You dont have to eat anything either still counts as fika with the beverage. And lastly i would say that meetballs is typical IKEA rather than typical swedish, but it is a Swedish store so maybe it still counts, at home i eat other things more often than meetballs.
Hmm people are so negative.. i think some swedes have a more negative picture of us than what is true. Or they make it true. self-fulfilling prophecy. Like that guy saying we are affraid for new things and are jealous and envious. If this not is a south thing.. Skåne Småland? I dont feel like that at all. Love new things. And say hi to new people. Some have a negative picture and are like that Them selfs and have an excuse that swedes are like that.. be the swede you want to be instead. Be as good as you want.
ID for buying lottery tickets is cause there's an 18+ restriction. They don't want your name but your age. Same as buying alcohol, energy drinks or tobacco etc. And the woman who answered it looked pretty young. If you're over 25 and look your age you typically don't need your ID to buy any of those things. But the cashier could demand it.
Well yes... I love to talk about swedes as a swede. Don't we all wanna introduce our countries to those that know nothing? Once in our lives we try to be proud and sow of this THING
I'm Swedish, with both parents from the north of the country, and I love meatballs and gravy (wonderful home made) I woul'd never for my life ruin that meal by adding lingonberry's, jam or whatever 🤢
Boasting is seen as very rude, people are “allowed” to succeed but only if they don’t boast. HippHipp is a really funny show - too bad the creators got in a huge fight and stopped speaking to each other. I would love to fika with you, but I don’t live in one of the major cities unfortunately
As a Swede. I just about never need to show my id and never have I needed to show id when I have bought a lottery ticket "a trisslot" like the women said.🤷♂ I would say a few of these people speak for themself or the place that they live.
The guy who said that swedes like to talk about swedes wants to say that swedes don't have to improve themselves regarding other cultures abroad. They are good as they are and therefore excluding in a way. Not to be mean, it's just a complacent behavior.
I can't even remember when I shown my id last. 😅 Maybe a Police stop showing my drivers license (that's counts as id). Most of this feels a bit forced, like they have to think of something. Typical swedish is not standing to close in ques or sit close at busses (you'd sit solo in a "twin" seat as far as you can). And yea, the Jantelagen is also a thing; don't boast or brag about yourself - ever! And for fika; beer is not including in fika. Soda, tea or coffe is basic - but not anything with alcohol though (not even alcofree beer). Cheers! 😊☕️🍩
I don't know when you are going to Sweden, but in August next year it's a big show were i live "flygfesten Dala-järna 2025. 8,9& 10 August" and we have some great cafe were we can have a fika, i have a small guesthouse for you and your partner if you Wanna stay a few days
We like to show all our prejudicates about how any other think about us! Thats hove to be "lagom" and humble of your origin! And then I can get you in an education on how to use "lagom" in swedish.. in a swedish context.. one probably have to been born in sweden to now how and when to us that word! A short lesson for non swedish speaker.. "lagom" is lagum = by the law.. later by the rules.. even later its kinda normal rule sort of! And later expanded to.. its normal! Soo.. even many more use of lagom is its "lagom åt mig" in negative it was "lagom" to me.. I kinda deserved that punnishment becuse I did wake up to late or I didnt take care of my car/i should know better! I do leave out anything about spouses/girl/boy-friends/children.. beuse one must be born and rised in sweden to understand all the differences! Soo if one is not born in sweden use the word sparcely! I do belive most langueages have special words that can be used differently! Soo.. im actualy meet english speaking people.. at least once a week.. its fun.. and my favo word to learn them is "Påtår".. becuse them I meet and talk to is often from any of the british Islands/ireland included/NI to.. no one excluded! Soo then swedish "Påtår".. its at first about coffey, its often a sign at lunch places.. "påtår ingår".. anybody that ask for tea.. is eighter a total lunatic or British.. the later could get both tea and even a refill.. but påtår means a refill of coffey!
Dwayne, l`ll do this in Swedish.
Roughly half the population vote for political parties that has made envy their ideology. So yes, it's a big thing, it's just rolled up in layers of "common good" and "social justice" to mask it.
Typically swedish is being stubbornly individualistic, terribly opinionated, giving brutal straight answers and somehow think that this is Lagom and introvert.
The Jantelage is that you should not think you are something. You should not think that you are better, more important, can do more, are wiser, or have any other advantages that make you more than other people. You shouldn't think you're good enough.
Jantelagen is "the law against too much success", so those two persons said the same thing in two different ways. If you break the law of Jante, you are diverting too much from lagom... and we don't do that... ;-) Again, if you happen to end up in Örebro on your tour of 2025 you need to find me for that fika and a little chat. Cheers! :-)
That wikipedia quote of Jantelagen is the worst explenation I've ever heard/seen. What you are saying is correct not that quote. Jantelagen means you should not think you are better then anyone else and to be humble.
A typical Swede is better then anyone else, more handsome, sexier, smarter, taller, more intelligent, more amazing, better dressed, just adorable nice, but most of all humble.
The age limit for playing with money is 18 years. This also applies to lotteries. I think Roast pork and onion sauce is more typically Swedish than meatballs. I believe that upbringing and cultures determine who you become and what values you acquire. I grew up with social democracy and they set limits/laws for everything. You should not think that you are someone. Stay on the mat. Don't live out your life for others to see. Be yourself. Don't try to be someone else. Don't drink too much. Talk sensibly. Don't forget to thank for the food and don't eat too much. You would be ashamed and feel guilty for everything you did and thought. We would be in solidarity with each other, but not in that sense when it comes to myself. More in a larger group perspective."The collective" But when it comes down to it, you can't think the same as everyone else . You have to grow up and develop at your own pace. Yes we are timid in that way. Many say that Swedes are afraid of conflict. And that is because some believe that we have never been in a war. We have always said we are neutral. But now we are in NATO, so now we have to learn to fight for real. Equality, in the form of fair distribution of power, resources and social benefits, is central to socialism. They themselves live a life of luxury. They were very self-righteous. We looked up to them because we thought they knew for sure. They knew their rhetoric to gain power . That is why we are so jealous of those who have more. We didn't think we had a will of our own growing up and don't have the self-esteem we should have. Complacency is not the right word for ordinary people but more afraid of failure. We don't believe in ourselves enough and don't know how to express it. It's much better these days thank goodness. Now the knowledge is much better. More money for the people. Higher salaries, etc. But unfortunately the class society in Sweden has increased enormously. We have more poverty. Typically Swedish is that we love our country after all. Be proud and cool despite our history
ID for lottery tickets because we want to prevent young people (under age) falling into the trap of being addictive to gambling
Thank you for properly explaining it.
But still famous people many times dont need to pay entrences and get a lot of things for free. Even in sweden.
@@yuiop271 And how do the other swedes feel about that? 😉
Lottery tickets are 18 and up in Sweden
Yeah scratch cards are 18 and above here. So no "Pigs might fly" scratch cards for the younger ones 😅

i have never showed my ID buying lottery tickets, i still have to show it going to clubs or sometimes buying ciggarettes.. but neer lottery ticket 🤣🤣
Check out "Alexander Skarsgård Is Too Swedish To Be Cocky" if you want to se jantelagen in action.
8:29 yes! Look att the interview on the late show with alexander skarsgård when he talking about swedish law of junte.

There's a striking resemblance between Fika in Sweden, and Hygge in Denmark :P
13:23. I am the same, mate. I am autistic and introvert. I do not like to be among a lot of people. I just like to be at home alone all by my self.
Humble is how we are supposed to be.

The Jante law was coined in a novel by the danish born norwegian author Aksel Sandemose! I think it´s a universal thing.
10:17 oh well, you got me there. :)
The "Law of Jante" is a cultural concept rooted in Scandinavian societies, describing an unwritten set of rules discouraging individualism and self-promotion. It emphasizes humility, equality, and conformity, often summarized as "Don't think you're better than anyone else."
This mindset is thought to have ties to the Lutheran tradition, which prioritized modesty, hard work, and the avoidance of pride.
I just had to see if my theory about Jante and the Lutheran church had any bearing. It did 👍😁
before you didnt want to flash cash because it was frown upon, now its because you will get an home invasion.
The age limit on energy drinks is a recommendation from the grocery store trade organization implemented at a time when kids overindulged in the stuff which had proven detrimental to your health if drinking more than for instance one can.
But 99% of the grocerers still sell it to underaged kids and teens anyway.
Great video as always! Have you decided where in Sweden you're gonna go? 🙂

I've got no problem speaking to strangers. But I do struggle to try new things, sometimes. :P
Consensus culture (the good and the bad).
The 10 rules of Jantelagen
You're not to think you are anything special.
You cant bye a lottery ticket if you are under the age of 18. It’s the law.
The id card thing is to help people help themselves (ie alcoholics, gambling addicts, underage youngsters) by controlling or putting checka on the means of distribution of potentially harmful products.
Jantelagen or lagom is like it’s ok to succeed but we do not boast about it, its just rude😄

But there arent any subs as far as i know ;/
Jantelagen is from a Book by norwegian author aksel sandemose

I can't even remember when I shown my id last. 😅 Maybe a Police stop showing my drivers license (that's counts as id).
Most of this feels a bit forced, like they have to think of something.
Typical swedish is not standing to close in ques or sit close at busses (you'd sit solo in a "twin" seat as far as you can).
And yea, the Jantelagen is also a thing; don't boast or brag about yourself - ever!
And for fika; beer is not including in fika. Soda, tea or coffe is basic - but not anything with alcohol though (not even alcofree beer).
Cheers! 😊☕️🍩
Drivers license counts as Id only in Sweden, not abroad nowadays
EU passport or national ID is required abroad to be recognised as Id
👍
We know that we are the best, but let y'all say it 😉👍
Come on now Dwayne, you have heard about "jantelagen" in many of the videos you have reacted to.
You have to consider the age group the person belongs to in regards to the answer. The older they are, less of the answers become relevant.
😊❤
You seem to be a person I'd like to take a fika with and have a chat with and maybe.. just maybe, learn you a thing or two :)
It’s not really envious. Missunnsam is not envious. It’s a bit difficult to translate
I'd say begrudging
@@livb6945 close enough, I guess
I want to be your swedish friend! 🤗
I don't know when you are going to Sweden, but in August next year it's a big show were i live "flygfesten Dala-järna 2025. 8,9& 10 August" and we have some great cafe were we can have a fika, i have a small guesthouse for you and your partner if you Wanna stay a few days
Självgod = self-righteous
A typical swedish thing is talking about stuff being "typical" something.
in sweden.
Dwayne, l`ll do this in Swedish.
Well of course you have to show your id when buying a lottery ticket, it’s 18+, it’s “gambling”
Roughly half the population vote for political parties that has made envy their ideology. So yes, it's a big thing, it's just rolled up in layers of "common good" and "social justice" to mask it.
if you like to be with less people you should not go to stockholm you should go to a smaler city.
its ok to do well but dont brag about it and dont think you are something special..
Typically swedish is being stubbornly individualistic, terribly opinionated, giving brutal straight answers and somehow think that this is Lagom and introvert.
"Easy Swedish" and he's from Skåne 🙈
Old eastern Denmark, only been Swedish since 1658
the way that guy said "självgodhet" didnt really come off as complacency, it was more of a.. self-righteousness..
You may be successful and make money. But You shall not brag about it. keeping a low profile. Let the actions speak for themselves.
I don’t know why they say indecisive as a swedish thing? I don’t really understand that
It's our consensus-hysteria
@@eh-modoare we talking about people in group that need too agree about a decision? Ah I thought it was about each individual decide for them selfs.
It is not embarressing, but you need to be little Humble
The Jantelage is that you should not think you are something. You should not think that you are better, more important, can do more, are wiser, or have any other advantages that make you more than other people. You shouldn't think you're good enough.
To my experience this is exaggerated
@@livb6945 But that's how it's written.
Cheers! :-)
You can be successful but don't boast/brag about it.
you need to show id to by a lottery ticket in stores beckause its illieagal to by it if you are under 18 years old.
Every one says a bunch og shit in Sweden in this video
That wikipedia quote of Jantelagen is the worst explenation I've ever heard/seen. What you are saying is correct not that quote. Jantelagen means you should not think you are better then anyone else and to be humble.
I dont know what.planet she is coming from. We dont have to show id.
You can make alot of money but dont make a show out of it.
A typical Swede is better then anyone else, more handsome, sexier, smarter, taller, more intelligent, more amazing, better dressed, just adorable nice, but most of all humble.
@dwaynesview You already have Swedish friends 😉 🙂
