Cornelis Vreeswijk was born Dutch and came to Sweden at age 12. He learnt our languaguage so well, to become one of our greatest poets and songwriter in modern time. Often much inspired by Brazilian music, as here.
Cornelis and Georg Riedel, two of our greatest musical national treasures. Both born outside Sweden. I think Georg came to Sweden when he was six years old.
I have complained about translations for decades now (keeping an actual list of the worst examples I have seen). This translation seems pretty accurate to me. If your goal is to have the same poetic flare as the original I think you would have to forgo the accuracy and change the phrases a bit. I spent about 10 minutes thinking about how I would translate it and didn't come up with anything better.
About a decade later... I seem to recall I intentionally made this more of a "word-by-word" translation. A poetic translation would be great as well of course, but it would be something else.
I agree, but I must say I expected a terrible translation - instead I found quite a fair one. The general message and the Swedish melancholy got through the language barrier.
i honestly cant listen to this without being emotional, because the lyrics are too real. Its so sad its not posible to translate it 100% the way it sounds in swedish.

Cornelis Vreeswijk is so beloved in Sweden. A troubled man in life, but an incredibly talented musician. He's composed so many epic modern Swedish folksongs! Gone too soon and dearly missed!
And the ones he translated he often enhanced by quite a lot. I'm part of a language learning community, and every single native English speaker learning Swedish so far has agreed that _Brev från kolonien_ is a step up from _Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah_

Cornelis was deep, philosophical, brutal and accurate. One of a kind. One of my favorites is "Balladen Om Herr Fredrik Åkare Och Söta Fröken Cecilia Lind".
It has an amazing pick up line of: "You smell so nice, and you dance so well, you're skinny and has a huge bosom". And Cecilia is like yeeeeeaaaah, let's go to my house. 😍

Omg, I saw Cornelis on the title and hit play immediately. This was one of my dads favourite artists and when my dad died I listened to this song a lot. 🖤🖤
On a vacation to Sweden we started at Stockholm in the harbor. Right there was a bust of Cornelis Vreeswijk and there also was a museum about him in Stockholm, but I believe that the museum doesn’t exist anymore. Our guide told us that Cornelis Vreeswijk was a revelation to Swedish people by his lyrics about living in the here and now, and to not worry about money and possessions, because you couldn’t take anything with you once you died.
There were many similar skalds, troubadours, authors, and play writers in Sweden, one more cynical than the other... But Cornelis was the jazziest! Still is probably.

Cornelis used to be on our regional radio station a lot when I was young. Mostly with his Dutch bardic songs. All about the lyrics. Kind of miss that these days in mainstream broadcasting.
Great musician, poet, singer. Love his music and wish he could have been longer with us. He had a special way with words. Poetic, beautiful, thoughtful, political and often very, very funny as well.
I know a guy whose grandfather was a painter. He used to hang out with Cornelis, and they also fought about the same girl! My friends grandfather won that one and that is why he exists! Great artist. I often go for long walks on Södermalm and sometimes walk through the park named after Cornelis.
Cornelis mastered the Swedish language. You can have different grades of how good and poetic songs are and then you have an entire new level were Cornelis resides. I'm not sure this can be appreciated in another language, but if you become good enough in Swedish you will understand.
Indeed and what make it even more amazing is he was originally from the Netherlands I believe and moved to Sweden with his parents when he was like 11 or 12. He became more well-spoken in the Swedish language than most Swedes.

His son Jack took over Cornelis' legacy and traveled around singing his father's repertoire. Sounded almost identical to his dad. He sadly passed away in 2023 from cancer at 59.
I'm half swedish and my grandma would sing this song to me when I was falling asleep as a child. Never really paid that much attention to the lyrics until now. It's dark for sure wow
When this song plays i just cant control my feelings, and its like cornelius just brings all the pain out of my body. This, as much of his music is truly a masterpiece. I wish everyone could hear it the way it was made to be heard and really understand the emotions just spewing out of this man. I think you missed the point, the key is the phrases 3:14 to 3:39 in to the clip. It is about living your life here and now and enjoy the small pleasures in life.

And if I was that kid's parent, getting that letter, I'd be worried! 🙂 It is a cover of Hello Mother Hello Father, but a much better version than the original! And kind of darker, this camp seems to be totally unhinged! No discipline at all, the lunatics rule the asylum!

The translation seems adequate but could be better melodically. I found some lines I would translate a bit differently, saying the same thing but fitting the English language better. But it is a good start.

Cornelis Vreeswijk died on 12 November 1987 at Södersjukhuset from liver cancer. Only 50 years old
