This musical tells the story of people immigrating from Sweden to the U.S during a time of starvation and tough times in Sweden in the 1800s, seeking ”gold” in the U.S. The song is explaining the pain of then comming to the U.S not finding the happines, the ”gold” you were searching for, hence the title ”the gold turned to sand”. The musical was made by Björn and Benny in ABBA and is based on a book called ”Utvandrarna” following Kristina and Carl-Oscar who decide to try their luck going to America.

As a Swede, I am definitely enjoying watching you react to some of our most powerful voices. There are other songs from this musical available from this particular evening with ebglish subtitles, one of my favorites is Anders Ekborg with Vildgräs (Wild grass). Anders portrayed Kristina's hard-working husband Karl-Oskar (Peter Jöback played his younger brother Robert). You should check that out as well.

You're so right about the emotion being written all over Peter's face and in his voice, you don't need to know the language to feel it. I'm Swedish and it hits me so hard eveytime I listen to this song, especially the part about how they got lost and how Arvid died, leaving Robert behind with all his guilt and doubts. A truly beautiful song, sung by an amazing artist.

This particular concert, with the cast from Kristina från Duvemåla, was made infront of Swedish decendants in America. The song "Du måste finnas" med Helen Sjöholm is from the same concert. In the audiens you will see Björn Ulveus and Benny Andersson (from ABBA) who wrote the musical. Björn and Benny introduced to the audiens the story and history behind the lyrics and the musical. I remember there was a tv program here in Sweden filming Björn and Bennys journey and the making of the musical. The final was this concert for Swedish decendants.
On the first premiere in Malmö/Sweden was a special guest invited, "Kristina" herself (her name in the musica)l. She died in 2005.

Sadly, to my knowledge, it have never been translated and performed tin English. The story REALLY touches me and I had the honor to perform the musical in a concert version with a great ensemble and soloists.
I hope that one day this will be performed in a language that the world can understand so more people can hear the story about the hardships these people had to go through. Maybe that could help us to take in the people who today fly from their countries to seek a new life and get away from all their misfortunes.

Hey! This musical is next level! I'm Swedish and was lucky enough to see this with the original cast way back when. The story is based on a Swedish classic book but the theme would resonate with anyone who has left their country for whatever reason. The original cast - including the amazing Peter - are all outstanding singers and performers, it was such a coming together of talent to accompany Bjorn and Benny's work. I often listen to this when I'm homesick, makes me cry actual floods!

Peter Jöback started his career as a child actor. But has been most known for this roll as Robert in Kristina från Duvemåla, but also for the Swedish voice for Aladdin and Phantom of The Opera which I believe he did on Broadway.
If you want you should see if you can see the movies Utvandrarna (The Emigrants) and Nybyggarna (The New Settlers). They are each about 3 hours long, but totally worth seeing. Utvandrarna and Nybyggarna is based from the books with the same names, but it also those books that Kristina från Duvemåla is based of.

This is my favorite singer. He is such a great person. He has a troubled background, being sexually abused by men when he was a young boy (in the theatre industry). His father was an alcoholic, and he was kicked out from his home at the age of 15. And if I remember correctly, his brother tried to kill himself in the 70´s, because he was gay, and liked to wear dresses. He died a few years later of complications from his suicide attempt. I´m going to his Christmas concert in 9 days, and I can´t wait!

The story is from a novel series in 4 parts that depicts the emigration from Sweden to America back in the 1850:s. But what it´s really about, I believe, is about female and male life strategies, and spiritual and not spiritual attitudes towards life, and where they lead us. Incredibly enough the guy who wrote the lyrics for the musical, Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA, is a declared atheist! And the writer of the novel himself, Vilhelm Moberg, ended up commiting suicide...
Robert that we hear singing here is the much younger brother-in-law to Kristina, and the both share a more spiritual approach to life and die young. Karl-Oscar, Kristina´s husband who took the initiative to look for a better life in the USA, has a more practical approach towards life and believes that God only helps those who help themselves. He losts her in her 30s and keep on living into old age in great loneliness. Who made the best choices for his or her life? It´s up to the reader to say.

If you ever have time, you should definitely read the books this musical is based on. The first two books especially are very dense with a lot of additional information surrounding the context for the setting and the language is a bit old fashioned, but personally it was one of the best reading experiences I’ve ever had. I didn’t have to read them at school which I think helped, but they made an incredible impression on me. They’re considered a Swedish natural treasure and for good reason.
Also fun fact, Peter Jöback is also the Swedish voice for Aladdin!

In high school we spent 8 MONTHS going over six pages in one of these books. It was boring beyond belief and I still have nightmares about those horrid pages our teacher stuffed down our throats. If her goal was to make us hate them she did succeed. It's been 30+ years and hell will freeze over before I touch them.

@@swedishmeatball4382 yeah that all makes sense, compulsary reading will do that to you. We had to read the Iliad in high school and at the time I didn’t see the point and found it incredibly dull, but now as an adult I want to take a crack at it again since my tastes have changed a lot since then, but something is still stopping me

In this scene, Robert hands over the watch to Kristina that Arvid wore* on the night that he passed away.
    * Not wrist watches back then. Probably handhelds with necklace.
“.. då gled klockan ur hans hand”
    Could be translated to
“.. then his watch slipped from his hand”
“His” is not a correct word for word translation, maybe “this” is closer. “His” is closer to the meaning of the message though. “Slipped” is correct but wouldn’t sound as good as for example “fell” or something like that. It is difficult to translate lyrics.
Time was sadly out for Arvid (=my interpretation).

Josh Groban has sung a English version of this song:
"12 Josh Groban - Gold Can Turn To Sand (Stockholm, Waterfront 2016-05-05)"
I prefer the Swedish version though.

it's heartbreaking to listen to it.. for too long..
and the musical artist peter jöback can really convey pain and sadness in his voice.. because he was abused as a child and teenager..sexually..those wounds never heal..

Björn and Benny wanted this musical to have its premiere on Broadway New York - but was reject. Poor Swedish immigrants were not interesting enough. So they chose an old gymnastic hall on the countryside in Minnesota where it all started. Good idea!!

This is based on the books “The Emigrants”, “The Immigrants” and “The last letter Home”. A treasure in Swedish literature. There is also a TV adaptation. Jag tyar inte mer, Karl-Oskar! Men se, Astrakanen blommar!

Please read the four books of Vilhem Moberg which is the background to the musical. Emigrants - immigrants - settlers and the last letter to Sweden they are worth reading and all translated to English if that makes it easier:)
