This is from the musical Kristina från Duvemåla by Björn and Benny from ABBA. It tells the story of the millions of people that left the famine in Sweden in the 19th century for what they hoped was a better life in America. But the life there was har and a lot of them died on the journey.

As a side note here, the singer Peter Jöback here also did the Swedish singing and speaking voice of the Swedish dub of Disney's Aladdin.

In the musical (as well as in the books it's based on) Peter's character Robert travelled to America with his older brother Karl-Oskar, his sister in law Kristina, their children and his best friend Arvid. While his brother decided to settle down somewhere with his family, Robert and Arvid went to California to search for gold. But finding gold was quite literally backbreaking work and the little gold they did collect was exchanged to money that later turned out to be fake.
Four years later Robert returns to Karl-Oskar and Kristina alone as a broken man, refusing to talk about Arvid. It isn't until Kristina sees Robert possessing a watch that Arvid had gotten in back in Sweden, one thing he had refused to part with, that made him finally tell her what happened.

As someone already said, this song is from a musical, (Kristina from Duvemåla, by the ABBA-guys, ((D is a made up Swedish village)), the character here (played/sung by Peter J), went to California together with his friend but the friend didn't make it and he returned alone to his brother, (Kristina was the wife of the brother). Good you got the English subtitles, not everyone realize there are... If (if...) you want to listen to/react to Kristina´s (major) song, "Du maste finnas" (You must exist/You have to be there) remember to choose the English subtitles there too... That song is also sad... (sorry in advance), she (Helen) sings about her (Kristina's) sorrow when her youngest (7:th...?) child is stillborn, (the other 6 were alive I think) and the doctor told her she can have no more intimacy with her husband, a new pregnancy will kill her... (as it does...) She asks God if he is there at all... if he exists...remember the subtitles, and... Bring tissues! ❤

Duvemåla is not fictional. it is a village in Småland in which the grandmother of Vilhelm Moberg (the original author) grew up.

    Hi Cead!
I absolutely love your honest reaction to Peter Jöback's performance of "Guldet blev till sand." This song captures the deep sense of loss and heartbreak that comes from unfulfilled dreams and the fleeting nature of happiness. It’s such a powerful moment in "Kristina från Duvemåla."
I would love to see you react to more from this musical, especially Helen Sjöholm's performances! It would be amazing to hear your thoughts on her interpretation. Keep up the great work!

hi me again.. :) Sorry to spam you, but I can also recommend Sabaton - Primo Victoria (ENG SUBS OFC) !!
"Primo Victoria" is a song by the Swedish power metal band Sabaton that focuses on the events surrounding the D-Day invasion during World War II. The title translates to "First Victory" in Latin, symbolizing the Allies' crucial landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944. The lyrics describe the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers, the strategic significance of the operation, and the intense battles faced during the invasion. It highlights the themes of courage, determination, and the push against Axis powers, emphasizing the importance of this event as a turning point in the war.
      Now i'm done!! :)
