Wonderful that you've found this gem.
This is a song from the musical 'Kristina från Duvemåla", which is based on "The Emigrants Series" by author Vilhelm Moberg.
The man in the beard is indeed from Abba as the music and lyrics are written by Benny and Björn of Abba fame.
As you've noticed this is a very emotional and powerful song.
The premise is that Kristina has lost a child and through all hardships and suffering she is now questioning the existence of god.
The song and lyrics move between anger and desperation in a heartbreaking way.
You should definitely listen to it again, with the lyrics translated.

She is one of the greatest singers in the world. Her portrayal of Kristina is famous, and this song, pleading with god, to please be real, is gut wrenching. She sings an English language version, but it isn’t nearly as impacting, as the translation is poor. This original, with subtitles is tie greatest performance.

Hi! Some context from a musical and Helen Sjöholm lover :) the song is about Kristinas relationship to god. And this song is in the near end of the musical when Kristina has lost one child which leads the family to move to America (which wasn't anything she wanted, and she is longing for her home and friends in Sweden), in America she feels unsafe but she has the love for her family and husband. However right before the song she has a miscarriage and is told thet she can never be with child again, this all (and more) leads up to this song which questions her whole belief. So a bad translation would be "you need to exist", and line from the song in English to explain her emotion is "who would take care of med when I die", "the question is if I have prayed for nothing", "God you banished me, banished me from my homeland, and here I am a shatter of myself and you settle for that. But you also stole my child and now you are taking away my family from me". I think there is actually a performance from Albert Hall with Helen singing just this song, but I must say that the words in Swedish are more powerful and historically shows the poverty that lead almost 1/4 of alla swedes fleeing to America during the late 1800 to early 1900. Im a nerd and a history teacher, I actually uses some of the songs from this musical to explain the conditions during this period for my students. :) When it comes to Helen (yeas it was Björn and Benny from Abba) she has been working with Björn and Benny for a long time and is still acting in musicals etc. Ive seen that many has recommended you Gabriellas song, which is also a wonderful song however you need to understand the context (its sung by a woman that is domestic abused by her alcoholic husband as a fudge you) but I would recommend you to listen to the Swedish translation of Anastasia, because Helen did Anastasias voice and I must say that its better than the English version. Helen Sjöholm is an amazing singer and a very humble person, and she is "folkkär" (beloved by the people) her in Sweden

If you search on RUclips you can find both the CD version as well as a live version of "You Have To Be There", also sung by Helen Sjöholm.
That English version of "Du Måste Finnas" was done about 15 years later, and you can to some extend hear that Helen's voice is not quite as powerful anymore. But still amazing. It is one of her "signature songs".
With that English version you can glimpse what this song is about, although it is not a 1:1 translation of the original Swedish lyrics.
It is sung by someone who has been tried and tested by God going through many hardships, yet still believes that these hardships will end at some point because God has to be out there and has to be listening. It is a moment of deepest despair - while not letting go of the hope and trust in God.

    Rough translation of the lyrics.
You drove me out,God. From my homeland I was torn away. Here I am a fugitive and a stranger and I'm reconciled to that fate. But you took my child, and you're taking me from my husband, I can no longer see a purpose, what is it you want? What should I believe?
The thought is dizzying in front of me gapes an abyss. All of my being is revolting and wants to say "no!" The question is awoken and now my soul trembles before the answer - that you do not exist, though I believed in you.
Who would help me endure life out here? Who would give me the power I need to receive? Who would comfort me? I am so small on this earth. If you don't exist, then what should I do?
No, you have to exist, you have to, I live my life through you. Without you I am a splinter on a dark and stormy sea. You have to exist, you have to, how then can you abandon me. I would be nowhere, I would be nothing if you didn't exist.
Never before have I had it in speach or thought, that little word which frightens and torments me so. The word is "if" if I've prayed all payers in vain. If you don't exist what shall I do then?
Who would feel my remorse and then forgive [me]? The peace in my soul, who would bestow that onto me? Who then, would receive me at last after [my] death? If you didn't exist - who'd take care of me then?
No, you have to exist, you have to, I live my life through you. Without you I am a splinter on a dark and stormy sea. You have to exist, you have to, how then can you abandon me. I would be nowhere, I would be nothing if you didn't exist.

Another recomendation: Helen Sjöjolm ce in the movie "Så som i Himmelen" (the english name being: As It Is in Heaven).
With her characters song: "Gabriellas sång"
ruclips.net/video/ZxmgkxRrpZE/видео.html here is a version of the song with english subtitles that are okay though some of the finer details in the lyrics are lost in translation.
    Really impressive performance.
Backstory for Gabriellas song, is that the movie is about a big classical music conductor that made it big internationally returns home to his small hometown in sweden and tries to lead a choir and compose music for them to perform. So this song is the one he wrote for Helen Sjöholms character.
Her character has a controlling, violent and all round abusive husband. And I belive the song performance is the moment in her character arch that she decides to stand up to him and then leave him.
The song is the big hit of all the songs from the movie. And most Swedes will have heard the song even if they never seen the movie it came from.
About Helen Sjöholm in a swedish context.
She is both an extremely technical and skilled singer, while as you picked up really good at conveying emotion in her singing.
In sweden she is both known for musicals but also as a artist that is mainly known for being a skilled singer rather then say a pop artist.
It might sound slightly oporadic to you, due to Swedish vocal sounds are already very close to the way opera singers use the version of vocal sounds that is the easist to sing (both in terms of getting volume and high resonance but also least strain on the vocal chords). So on all the big notes, they are sung very similar to in opera, but to a swede it doesnt sound operadic or broadway-esc (broadway artists also change their vocal sounds in a simular way). But in swedish its basically the exact same way as you speak, so her singing comes across as very natural. Just very impressive singing, but sounds almost like a natrual speaking which in the combination of her being so good at conveying emotion while singing makes for a very impactfull performance.

    • @IQzminus2
      @IQzminus2 5 месяцев назад

For more Helen Sjöholm that isnt from a musical.
She did a live acapella performance togheter with Solala (an acapella group) as the midpoint performance on Melodifestivalen (the swedish national selection for eurovision). So she wasn't competing with the song, just part of the show.
Not as emotional of a performance, but vocally very cool vocally.
      ruclips.net/video/oGUsY3p-0Ng/видео.html
"Vår bästa tid är nu" is a old famous swedish song. So they did a modern acapella version. It litterly translates to "our best time is now"

It's very affordable to get lessons in playing an instrument or indeed singing in Sweden since there are heavily subsidized municipal "music schools". They're not schools per se, it's just that their instructors operate under one roof and the kids come to them rather than the other way around, although in order to be able to teach more students it's not unusual for them to travel to schools and fit lessons in during some of their students' breaks from regular classes.
Then there are choirs of course, especially if you don't have a problem singing in a Christian one.

My favorite swedish group is the real group singing acapelle. They usually sing in swedish and english. They members have switched completely in the last few years and "grown up" with the members, that founded the group, they are my favorites. But Anders Edenroth still support the "new" group an I really like their new version of the Beatles-song Blackbird. And search for "gota the real group members of rajaton". Very powerful. An absolte recommendation to listen to one of the best acapella groups.

I am so happy to have seen Helen Sjöholm performing in the musical Kristina Från Duvemåla at the Cirkus Theater in Stockholm (1998). I was flabbergasted by her voice and her presence.
A couple of years later my wife played a video of the movie As It Is In Heaven where I heard a voice singing Gabriella's Song and I immediately recognised that this singer had to be Helen Sjöholm.

The most beautiful song from the musical, in my eyes, is 'I'll be Waiting There', the English version, which Helen sings at the end (sad ending). ruclips.net/video/f_5pvXDSBlM/видео.html
She starts singing at about 2.06
I will bet that you will be crying by the end. It's just a photo on there of a house and an apple tree, but the tree is significant. Russell Watson sings a short bit about the tree, but the song is Helen's - she has the most glorious voice. There is a live version on RUclips as well, sung in English, but it's taken by an audience member by the look of it, so the quality isn't great, but Helen's voice is clear as a bell. Hope you enjoy the song as much as I did.

Oh, this is a Swedish Classic! It is from a musical composed by ABBA fame Björn & Benny based on a novel by Vilhelm Moberg called Utvandrarna (The emigrants). Kristina in the story has just lost a baby and this is her heartbreaking calling to God: she is on her way to loose her faith that she's had all her life.
It is from a Minnesota Concert... How fitting!
In the 19th century many poor Swedes migrated to America (Minnesota - where the concentration of Swedish migrants is the highest) to start a new life. This series of books by Vilhelm Moberg describes the hardships of these migrants.

The lyrics is about faith. The main line is "du måste finnas" (You must exist), and the meaning is that she has gone through so much hardships that she doesn't really know if God exists, but she feels that a God must exist for her to go on

Sadly, the song cannot be translated perfectly. I've seen some english translations and they do not carry the same weight.
I'd recommend ytou watch the movie from the 1970s, "utvandrarna", which tells this story based on actual letters from real peopel during the great emmigration from Sweden.

It's a shame you didn't watch the version with english subtitles.
Cause this is a really good and emotional song lyrically too, basically bad things keep happening and pushing her down, including her child dying, and being alone in a foreign country, and she's questioning the existence of God.
    Select lyrics include things like:
"And now my soul is shaking before the answer... That you don't exist!"
"If you don't exist, what am I supposed to do then?"
"Who would take me in, in the end, after death."
"No you have to exist! You have to! Then how can you abandon me!?"

You are right, both men with beard in the audience are the guys from ABBA, they have wrote the songs and this musical so that's why.
This is from the 19th century when Swedes tried their luck going to usa to become rich and this woman has lost both her son and husband in usa and now she lives there alone, dont know the language, don't know anyone and all she got is her believe in God but she start to hesitate as all this has happened to her, so that is what she is singing about, that God must exist (Du Måste Finnas - You Must Exist).
Helen is very talented, this clip is from 1994 but she still has the same voice, and she show all emotions which is amazing, but she has also done comedy songs, where she has been really funny and good at that too, so she is extremly talented.

The background is that she followed her husband in emigration to Minnesota USA, where they settled and got around materially quite well. Before the emigration she lost one child to starvation, and almost died on the ship over the Atlantic from Scorbut. In US a doctor told her she could not have any more children because she would die if she got pregnant again. So she is now also “taken from her husband”
She also feels she doesn’t connect to God, which really was central for her, and she has thoughts this is because she broke the fourth commandment about staying in your country. She feels overgiven by God and that is what the song is about. And YES she is fantastic and your should see this with subtitles. And your reaction is really honest and good!

    The lyrics are fakking insane.
The TLDR is that she migrated to america, lost her child and her husband and is now questioning her faith.
"If youre not real, what am I to do"
"Du måste finnas, du måste, jag lever mitt liv genom dig. Utan dig är jag en spillra på ett mörkt och stormigt hav"
Translates to "You have to exist, you have to, Im living my life throught you. Without you Im lost on a dark and stormy sea"
All so incrdibly enhanced by Helen 100% living the part, every eotion is so increadibly written all over her face, its haunting really.
And yes, thats the guy from ABBA.
Unless Im misstaken both Björn and Bnny was involved in the music for this play
