In the last 800 years, no one has invaded Finland apart from Russia and its predecessors. Sure the Swedes did it first during the crusades in the 1200s, but I think we're all over that now.

But if the kingdom of Sweden would not have "saved the land from the pagans" then the church would have given the job to the next one willing to "convert the land". Like most of today's Sweden and Norway was at one point Uralic(finno ugrian tribes). Scandinavians only lived in the southern parts of Swe and Nor when they discovered "the church". Like look at the Haplogroup N1c map on EUpedia and you can see yourself. There are maps of Kingdom of Sweden too that will show a map similar to that one but the other way around, then Scandinavian peoples history and so on(just for the disbelievers). So what was our real culture really at the coastal areas that had traded for a long time, like Fin even has old Germanic words that the Germanic languages has stopped using themselves(then if they were Germanic from start I do not know, but what I do know is that the Indo Europeans loves to be the origin even if they might even be a younger group than other groups. I think the church handling the records for soooo many years has also twisted some facts that might some day be proven by a find to be wrong).
My point is that it was the church coming here and giving the land to the Kingdom of Sweden that was seen in "gods" eyes as deserving or whatever they made up back in the day. A bit different from the reason the Kremlin has had to eradicate all Native cultures and languages, even people to feed the growth of their own Slavic culture and language, even pure ethnic Muscovian Slavs. Every area Denmark or Sweden owned still has the Native languages and cultures left, of course the culture has changed due to many reasons but they never had the same goal as the horde lead by a Dark lord.

the one that talked about Alexander 2nd and sounded intelligent was an textbook example of ruzzian intellectual imperialist.
The laws in Finland during the Alexander 2nd were Swedish laws which slowly transformed into Finnish laws (Finland was a separate entity inside ruzzian Empire with own laws, Currency, postal service and borders. You needed a Visa to get in to Finland from ruzzia. So lesson here is somebody can sound intelligent and have basis on his/hers arguments but if you know facts the lies will crumble.

@@vicolin6126 it gets even weirder in history when first synagogue was founded in Helsinki in late 1800's Finlands Swedish laws banned Judaism and Finns didn't have a rule over that law (they already had pogroms in ruzzia) so what happened is that when the synagogue opened all members of Finnish Senate were there for its opening and jews (illegally) were protected by the government. The laws that legitimized Jews and others came to be after in 1900's . That gave the Nazis a headache when they learned they are fighting next to Jews against USSR. Interesting piece of history.

Its funny that he brings Alexander II up as he is always seen as the "good Tsar" in Finland. His statue still stands in the middle of Senate Square in Helsinki and nobody pats an eye of it being there. There was good things of being conquered by Russia from Sweden as it finally gave the autonomy to the finnish people to find their own place in the world. Still there was also the bad as Nikolai II is still seen as the worst Tsar and you would not find a statue of him anywhere as he is hated in Finland as he tried to Russificate Finland by force and guaranteed that Finland would be independent if it got the chance.

Regarding the subject of the video. When I was about 17, a historian told me that the Russian history textbooks portray the Russians as the good guys and the West as the bad guys. The historian went on, "Which country most faithfully reproduces the history of the world for you? It depends on where you get the history of the world retold." I was stunned because I had never thought that way about the concept of "manipulation" in education, news and culture.

Been watching the channel whose video he reacted to and it gives you really good view to the psyche of Russian people. Its also nice to see older people who know how things are and are not afraid of saying it. I as a finnish person has nothing against russian people but in the end we know why Finland joined Nato.
Our former President Sauli Niinistö told what was the first red flag that Russia was dictating what Finland could do was when Putin demanded guarantees that Nato does not expand to the east. This was seen as clear indication that Russia was trying to dictate what Finland can and cannot do. Niinistö answered to this by stating in his 2022 new years speech that Finland has the right to seek Nato membership if it so chooses. When Russia attacked Ukraine it broke all the deals it had signed with them and many of those are the same or same kind of deals Finland had with Russia themselves. So this was clear show that those deals don't mean nothing as Putin can just decide to ignore them and do what he himself wants. In the end there was no other direction than to Nato as Finland was not going to just sit there and wait when Russia would come to knock on their door to demand something or force their decisions on Finland. Finland is independent country and is not anything that Putin owns or control. Now Finland does not stand alone and if they try there will not be just Finland against them but the whole defence alliance of Nato. Russians always leave that "defence" part out when talking about Nato.

About the guy saying that we had Russian laws. That is actually totally false. A main point in our 'transfer' to Russia in 1809 was that we could keep our old laws, i.e. the laws that we had when we were an integral part of Sweden. Also, after that Russia couldn't just enact and enforce laws on us. And this was such a good thing! Sometimes, they tried it though...
A fact, e.g., was that Russians didn't have the same rights as Finns in the Grand Duchy of Finland.

    👩🏼‍🌾👋😊🍁 Hello, Dwayne!
Thank you for a great video! So insightful, nuanced, informed and intelligence!
Both you - and the Russians interviewed.
Yes, the Russians are Europeans, both the elderly and the young. As almost always, the collective wisdom and common sense of the people is surprising because the people usually seem to be much wiser (not all of course) and to have a more balanced view of how things actually are, even when they have partially been 'brainwashed' by their government, schools and the prevailing political system.
As a general comment, I have to admit that it's a real pleasure to listen to your videos about various topics. The difference between a European, in this case, British, commentator: you, and an American one is huge and to your advantage. Also, as a general comment, it's so obvious that the ignorance of the Americans about the rest of the world and many other things is caused by the poor quality of the general education. What a difference it would make if the Americans had access to a good general education!

The guy at 2:13 is funny and frightening at the same time. He is funny because he apparently considers himself bulletproof. Apparently he believes that he will survive in one of the mass attacks as in Ukraine. Why isn't he there, there is a lot of easy-deserved money for him? Is terrifying that violence is a solution for him. This is causing more and more violence. It is a good example of toxic masculinity.
The type at 8:38 is a funny idiot. He believes that the Finns are friendly to the Russians. At the end of the Cold War, even the Poles stopped mandatory military service. The Finns didn't do that. They are still waiting for a Russian soldier to put their foot across the border ... The Finns do not believe that the Russians want to rob them of land, they know. The last war ended with the fact that the Russians did not give back Finnish territory. The Russians stole the Finn Land and the Finns want it back with the Finns there.
The raw materials lie in the sparsely populated east, next to China. They also want a piece of land back and need raw materials for their industry. If the Russians had no atomic bombs, the Chinese would have long since secured their raw material supply. And no, Russians and Chinese are not friends, they are business partners. The two already quarreled in the 1960s.
France was not really interested in conquering Russia. Russia had broke the embargo against the UK and therefore the attack came. France is interested in the Mediterranean and Africa. It wants to conquer that. Germany wants to extend its eastern border as far as possible to the east, for the same reasons from which the Russians want to expand their western border. Both are concerned with space for a defense. But there is only space for one of the two. Yes, I just ignore the people who live on the battlefield of the two States.
Fun Fact: In the 1990s, Russia officially wanted to become a member of NATO. But they wanted to have a special position, after all they are the "superpower". At that time, Russia was economically on the ground and food was scarce. NATO would probably have rejected because the unstable situation in Russia, if Russia had made an application. But Russia waited for NATO to invite it, which never happened.

To the guy with the curly hair at 9:10 - Russia was in friendly terms with so many other nations (neighbors) that they invaded. Most lately Ukraine.
From the collapse of soviet union in 1991 the Lissabon protocol was conducted 1992 to have all nuclear warheads returned to Russia (I think this took some time because the government in Ukraine wanted to keep some of the warheads) - in exchange for economic support and security assurances from the United States and Russia. Russia has broken this deal, and US is upholding the deal by financial and security/military support.
All the neighbors of Russia knows to not trust them - so this is isolating Russia and that's why all want to be in NATO and thus NATO closing in to Russia.
    In short :)

The movement main goal was often hunting down that supported the communist movement or was "suspected" such as. The country was divided back then as now of the current polarization.
I see the history repeats yet again in Finland. When I was in Finland in this summer to visit some of my relatives, I felt a little tension between the citizens. When the current PM Petteri Orpo wanted to abolish the unions and letting the government deciding the salaries.
My cousin said the hourly wage as a truck driver by removing the unions would be from about 17 euros down to 7-8 euros as a hourly wage. When the massive strikes happened early this year, the PM put more fuel into the fire by calling the unions as "Mafia". There been talks to have a general strike in Finland, which the 1917 general strikes became a civil war. And guns are relative easy to obtain in Finland...

8:25 I think Russia has always been very clear with their rules. We (NATO) knew those rules, and we purposely pushed and pushed on that rule in order to get the response (we knew we'd get, there is only one) and then legitimize our poo-poo.

@@ransu7327 Theirs. If Russia feels threatened to its existence and sovereignty they are allowed to use any solution. Even Nuclear.
And we broke the agreement we had with Russia not expanding/moving closer to Russia multiple times since the promise was given to them. And we've kept on pushing this boundary. So we've forced their hand.

The only real reason why Finland joined NATO is tourism. Finland really didn't need to join NATO because of defense, Finland alone is already a difficult country to invade. Without NATO Finland still is part of the Nordic alliance and the Nordic countries always defend each other, Finland is also an EU country and the EU countries defend each other.
If we imagine a hypothetical situation where Finland is not a NATO country, then if Russia were to attack Finland, Norway, for example, would come to defend Finland, and if a Norwegian died in the fighting, then it would be considered an attack on NATO countries, and thus NATO could participate in the war.
Now that Finland is a NATO country, it looks better on paper to ordinary people, and thus safer, so tourism is the reason.
Whatever Sweden's reasons were for joining, I don't know, Sweden is safe between Finland and Norway in any case. But from a defense point of view, I think Sweden's NATO membership is more important than Finland's, of course, Finland's maritime areas are now NATO areas, but Sweden's Gotland island is a very important area, and it is now NATO territory.
To be noted, that this is all just my opinion, of course I could be completely wrong. I'm not a war or military expert.

Actually Finland and Russia didn't have big problems so that is why I think our Finnish Government should normalize their relationship with Russia even there is Ukraine war going on. It is their war not ours.

Well, let me as a Finnish man tell you that Russians/Soviets will always complain and whine about everything being unfair 😂😂. Just like during the ww2, when Soviet Union had all the support of Nazi Germany, because of the Molotov /Ribbentrop pact during the winter war and a couple of years to come. They attacked Finland in 1939 and they had all help needed from Nazi Germany, to 1941 and when it was only the Germans that wanted to help Finland to get weapons, after Churchill and Du Gaulle saw Finland as naive beliving they would help Finland out at all...
Then Soviet Union started to lick the massive balls of west to be able to conquer Finland... That didn't work at all and remember that Finland fought both Russia and Ukraine (and 13 other nations and West) and anyway are the Russkies whining today 😂😂😂... We aren't afraid of them at all and this time is our Brothers of Ukraine with us 😂😂😂... Come on... Attack us again and let's rock 😂😂😂
