Barry Sanders never missed a Pro Bowl. He AVERAGED over 1500 rushing yards a season. He only had one season with fewer than 1300 rushing yards-the season when he sat out 5 games. He was the best football player, any position, some years. He won a league MVP at RB with over 2000 rushing yards one season, and finished second in MVP voting another season. His offensive line was not good, and defenses keyed in on him every gameplan. And just watch the footage. The best running back of all time; it’s not remotely close. -Sincerely, a Titans fan
If Barry would have played 16 years like Emmitt, his rushing yards record would be as untouchable as Wayne Gretzky’s 2857 career points or John Stockton’s 15806 career assists.

As long as those 6 years weren't in a blue and silver uniform. They were getting worse and worse up front and Barry was ahead of the only person on that list he wanted to be ahead of. Jim.

I’m 67 and watching every game Barry ever played. GOAT
Barry was like 5’8”, 205lbs, and was built like a fire hydrant. That gave him an incredibly low center of gravity, which is one reason he was so hard to bring down. While yes, he was really fast, he wasn’t one of those 4.25 40 burners or anything. That’s why you can see him get run down from behind sometimes in those videos. However, his *acceleration* was otherworldly. Not sure there has ever been ANY other running back who could go from zero to top speed faster.
What makes his accomplishments even more impressive is that for pretty much all of his career, the Lions were generally AWFUL, especially without him. For a bunch of seasons literally their entire offense was “give the ball to Barry and hope something happens.” So he accomplished everything he did in *spite* of the fact that opposing defenses were solely focused on not letting him beat them. Yet he still had a season where he ran for 2000 yards in 14 games.
From what I understand, a big part of his decision to retire was being fed up with being on terrible teams. He wanted to get traded. (rumor back then was that he wanted to go to the 49ers, which would have been *sick*.) However, the ownership refused to trade him for anything short of a deal no other team would ever agree to. So, rather than continue to get beat up carrying a terrible team, and with no hope of getting to go elsewhere, he basically said “F you” and retired. Good for him. Probably the best RB in the history of the NFL.
He was faster than any 4.25 burner from 0 to top speed in 6 feet. He ran 4.38 in tennis shoes (not track) and cut offs. He was not slow.

Barry had 3 defensive players in the backfield he had to break tackles before he could even reach the holes. When there was containment from the offensive line, it was a touchdown. His lineman were awestruck and didn't block up the field. I could only imagine if he had some help like a Larry Allen to Emmit Smith.

I am almost fifty years old and I grew up in Michigan as a Lions fan. In my ENTIRE LIFETIME the Lions have won just that one playoff game. 🤯

Barry Sanders is THEE greatest running back of all time. Even Emmitt said if Barry wouldn’t have retired, he would have been the NFLs only 20,000 yard rusher. And yes you could blind wife block the, but keep in mind, they could horse collar too.

Yo! Working in retail, I helped Herman Moore pick out pedometers for him and his wife, circa 2013. Suuuuuper nice guy - I could tell he wanted to get it done, so I didn't say anything in recognition until he was ready to go, and then I got to shake his hand and thank him and tell him that he and Barry were childhood heroes of mine and that I always remember my father telling me that those guys play their hearts out every game for one of the worst teams (can say that; lifelong Lions fan) and get up and do it again.

Barry retired because he was sick of losing and the Detroit Lions organization, during the first year of his retirement the Miami Dolphins offered 3 first round picks for Barry, who was going to play for the Dolphins but the Lions decided to decline and said that Barry would only play for Detroit under contract or not at all and so he never played again.
Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders should go bowling together.

The NFC North was previously known as the NFC Central from 1970 to 2001. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were previously members, from 1977, thats why like the Packers, Bears, and Vikings the highlights favored those teams. I was lucky to grow up watching Sanders career thru college. Its a damn shame what the Lions did to him keeping him from a Super Bowl chance, but thems the breaks. In our hearts Barry has a ring even if its not on his finger.

The Bucs used to be in our division. We played them 2x a year so... yeah. They got all the Barry they wanted and then some.

Dorsett had the same reaction time in terms of changing direction. That hop that Barry does enables him to change his direction instantaneously.

Emmitt was a different type of runner. Emmitt was nifty as well but wouldn't hesitate to run the defender the fuck over. Barry Sanders would much rather you miss him altogether, he didn't possess that Earl Campbell mentality
He ran like momentum had no effect on him. He'd start in one direction, do that little stop and hop, twist his hips in the air, and land moving in a totally different direction. Most guys who tried that would start left, do the hop and twist, and their momentum to the left would have landed them on their asses. Barry just turned on the jets in the other direction and was gone. His top end speed was good, but his initial acceleration was other worldly.
The Bucs, Bears, Vikings & Green Bay were in the division with them at the time.

Bears, Packers, Vikings and Bucs were divisional games. There's more highlights against them than anyone else because they played them twice a year.

I loved Thanksgiving Day football because I was able to watch Barry. If memory serves, he retired because he didn’t want to beat his idols record (Walter Payton)
Same here I loved those games and watching the leaves on the ground now makes me want to play backyard football. We used to play 11 on 11 tackle football in the morning before we eat. Good old days when we played outside with friends

The Lions definitely are cursed. Truly sad that they couldn't get the right mix especially at QB. Pete, Ware, Mitchell etc just couldn't be consistent with the throwing game to open up the field.

Horse collar rule was added after some guy took down Jerry Rice with a horse collar and destroyed his ACL. It can be argued if Barry was the GOAT at RB. There’s no argument for ANYONE other than Rice as the GOAT WR, and the league acted to stop those kind of injuries from happening as often in the future once Rice went down.

Some people could run faster. No player could accelerate/decelerate with him. Four steps and he was full speed. World class acceleration. Yes, 90% of these tackles you see in the video are now illegal. If they'd let Barry tack on 15 or half the distance every time he was horse collared he would the Lions sure would have won more. edit: #41 was his first run in the NFL.

His dad and his dad's love for the great Jim Brown is why he walked away. To his dad the great Jim Brown was the greatest running back the God ever breathed life into and he wanted to leave his dad with that. He was on pace to not only break his record but absolutely destroy it. Emmitt Smith's record should have an asterisk beside it because it took him another 5 years after Cyber Barry walked away from the game and has not looked back.
They scheduled games differently back then. You played the same teams far more often.

Play #13, was the very first carry after he got to 2000 yards in the season, and got the football, he was at exactly 2000 yards, this 53-yard run the very next play gave him 2053 yards for the season.
