  • @Yesquire0
    @Yesquire0 2 года назад +35

    Barry was asked a question about his "vision" while running the football. Part of his response was a very casual "I don't even worry about the first guy". He always looked past the first guy to figure out what to do next. When you string highlights together, one major factor in Barry's success seems to jump out at you: his acceleration was inhuman and baffled the instincts of the defenders, who constantly choose an angle to get to him only to maybe get a hand on his heel as he speeds off. Barry's deceleration was just as unreal, and he could totally lose a tackler by stopping on a dime and letting him stumble past in front of him while trying to match that stop move. Most of his "long" TD runs were of the 40-60 yard variety. Yes, Barry was fast, but never the fastest guy on the field. Cornerbacks could always beat him in a straight-line sprint, and they usually did so if they had more yards before the goal line to allow them to catch up to Barry. He got caught from behind a lot just shy of the goal line. He had disproportionately large thighs for his height, which allowed him to take a pounding and even break some tackles, but his legs were not shaped for sprinting.
    He was one of those rare athletes who, if you had a TV on in the background while doing chores, you always had to stop whatever you were doing if Barry had a chance to get the football in his hands. You never knew what might happen, and you did not want to miss one of these highlight moments.

      In his documentary I believe, he talks about how he didn't take his training and conditioning very seriously when he first entered the league. He was eating a lot of junk food as a rookie and for the first couple of years. Then he focused on slimming down and boosting his top gear so he wouldn't get caught from behind as often. The result was 2000+ yards and some of the nastiest runs and jukes ever witnessed in the game. The camera does not do justice as to how fast he was truly moving on the field.

  • @royrocker9004

    Barry did most of his runs on his own as the Lions never had an O line to block for him. Many times on 3rd and short the defense knew Barry was going to get the ball and would often stack the line, and more times than not, Barry still got the first down. If Barry had the O line that Dallas had for Emmitt Smith, Barry would have shattered the rushing record, and he pry would have played for 2 or 3 more years, maybe more. Barry walked away healthy on his terms. Much respect. Having seen him live many times as a Lions fan, he brought a lot of joy to the fans. Every time he got a handoff the crowd would all stand, never knowing if this is going to be one of those fantastic runs. Barry was entertaining on even a short gain, rarely took hard direct hits. It was usually someone holding on to his jersey or someone holding an ankle waiting for a team mate to bring Barry down. G.O.A.T. Barry was never a show boat. No dancing after a TD. He simply handed the ball to the ref. Class act always. Many players today with much less talent think they are a Superstar and none have even half the talent or class of Barry Sanders.

  • @jzeke1712
    @jzeke1712 2 года назад

    Best thing about him was zero showboating, no stupid touchdown dances, just pure talent and humbleness. Seems like there’s not many NFL stars like that anymore.
    Plus you gotta remember he got all those yards on some really crappy Lions teams.

    These are mostly just his longest runs. It's impossible for young people to understand just how good Barry really was.
    First of all, they played much of his career in a Run & Shoot offense. No fullback, on Tight End. He had 5 lineman blocking, and some of them were not very good.
    Some of Barry's best runs were when he was caught dead-to-rights for a loss, and he'd make a couple quick moves to gain 3 yards.
    Any time he touched the ball was a chance that he would go off and score. He was a threat every single time. We watched games and would just hold our breath with each carry. Nothing was ever over until the whistle blew.

    Regarding ankle-breaking, in 1995, Steelers CB Rod Woodson tore his ACL when he tried to change direction and arm-tackle Barry Sanders. His foot got caught in the turf. I saw the game on TV and Barry made one of those cuts he's famous for. The announcers didn't say much about it, but you could see Woodson collapse onto the field.

    What was special about Barry Sanders wasn't his top end speed. It was his anticipation and his ability to make people miss in tight situations AND in the open field. He was the football equivalent of an ankle breaker. Plus, it was difficult to get lower than his center of gravity, so he'd truck you too!
