They’ll never make a highlight reel but some of Barry’s greatest runs were for 0-5 yards. He had a terrible line and would often have to juke half the team and run side to side to just make a few yards. One of the greatest I every had the privilege of watching.

  • @Taliesyn42

Barry was fast, but every team had someone faster on defense. What made him so dangerous was that a) he could accelerate from stop to full speed faster than anyone else, b) he had unparalleled situational awareness, and c) he was both ridiculously strong and insanely agile, so that you had to tackle him PERFECTLY or he'd get away from you. People who played against him said time and again how they'd get both hands on him, go to bring him down, and he'd just be gone.
One other thing you may have noticed - at no point did you ever see him celebrating a touchdown. He always just tossed the ball to the nearest ref and headed to the sideline. And this was in the era of people hiring professional choreographers to come up with long, elaborate dances in the endzone.

Barry never had the same kind of elite top end speed that some backs had, but he was the most elusive back of all time. He also had great balance. It was nearly impossible to bring him down with just a hit. Had to wrap up and hope you got lucky. With a terrible offensive line he made defenders look like high schoolers. He put up some ridiculous numbers in his career, and would easily have broken Walter Payton's record if he hadn't retired early.

I was never a Lions fan but I would watch their games just to watch Barry, he was unbelievable at times. Like other Greats, he was able to read the field and almost project what was going to happen, then you add in his ability to just take off, juke, spin and bounce off of tackles or just break them altogether was just a pleasure to watch. I know a lot of people want to compare Barry to Emmitt Smith but I tend to give the edge to Barry, I believe that Smith was a little bigger and stronger which I feel is what he relied on whereas Barry would just throw peoples games off with his movement. Glad you got to watch this! Oh, and to hit on one of your last statements, I am a huge fan of the RB position, it definitely is a hard position but my personal love, seeing a very well rounded TE, running, catching and blocking, with a good one, it can be really hard to defend against.

He also was in an offense that had a trio of great WRs in Herman Moore, Perriman, and Johnny Morton. The QB was also decent. The big issue was the HC. Wayne Fontes was an idiot. He almost always took Barry out inside the 5, especially on 3rd down. Even if you aren't going to give him the ball, at least have him in as a great decoy.

Barry carried the Lions for YEARS, and yet the Lions still couldn't get to the Superbowl, so he quit football and went to Europe.....

Of course I knew #1 would be against my Cowboys. Still, I know one thing, the Vikings, Bears, Bucs, and Packers DCs and defensive players had nightmares the week of the Lions games and then immediately had PTSD afterwards.....He just abused his division rivals.

Also, keep in mind that he did all this while they were actively stacking against the run, as the Lions' passing game was a joke.

You gotta appreciate that Barry's Lions teams were almost always TRASH!! Barry's line was TRASH! He didn't have 5 Hall of Famers blocking for him. Barry was the only REAL threat on the field. Teams STACKED against him ALWAYS! And he STILL fucking trashed teams over and over!! I am a DIE HARD Packers fan, but Barry Sanders is the greatest running back of ALL-TIME!
