  • The 1998 NBC miniseries The Temptations is a staple in many households. It told the story of its namesakes' rise from two doo-wop groups to one of Motown Record's flagship acts.
    The miniseries portrayal of David Ruffin, who was in the group for five years, and its impact on his legacy is chronicled in this second installment of On The Legacy.
    Thank you for watching!

    Even though the movie wasn't the best or the most accurate, you can't deny that Leon was the best for David! Especially the part where he said "ain't nobody coming to see you Otis". The best part is that he even looked like David and he gave David life. I don't think anybody else could be him but Leon!

    As much as I get the sympathy for Paul, there is a reason why we are STILL talking about Ruffin. He defined the Temps sound more than any other lead and he was so good that nobody was ever really able to follow him……save for Ali Ollie Woodson who was, at least vocally, as good as Ruffin if not a little better. Paul, in contrast, was a decent vocalist but he wasn’t great on vocals. His legacy lies with being a founding member and his prolific choreography which gave the early Temps their signature stage craft. Sadly, history doesn’t remember those in the background quite as fondly as those in the spotlight. Paul Williams should be remembered but he will never occupy the same place in music history as does Ruffin.

      After a few weak cuts, David finally found gold with producer/composer Van McCoy [composer of 'The Hustle']. Together, they made a great album ["Everything's Coming Up Love"]. That album had 3 hits: 'Walk Away from Love', On & Off' & the title track. Van had a great orchestra & great background singers ['Faith, Hope,& Charity']. But bad luck intervened. His fans were waiting for David's next great collaboration with Van, when word came that McCoy had died from heart failure. Everone was shocked because he was so young. Then came info that Van had dealt with a weak heart from childhood. Everything that Ruffin recorded after Van was underwhelming....so sad.

    Thank you for producing this exemplary video on my favorite singer of all time. David certainly was troubled and was by no means a saint, but the miniseries portrayed him as an egomaniac. David was far from that, I believe he had a good heart but that abuse was all he ever really knew hence why many of his relationships ended. I believe his 1991 recording HURT THE ONE YOU LOVE is poignant and is very much David apologizing for his past misdeeds and handling of his relationships with not just the women in his life but also the Tempts themselves.
    I for one love his solo work and it is in constant rotation on my Sony Walkman whenever I am out on long drives. I love songs like "My Whole World Ended, "Common Man," Me & Rock & Roll," and the still sadly relevant "Blood Donors Needed." I also love that many of his songs are about loneliness, heartbreak and feelings of emptiness, these are emotions I feel constantly as I suffer from depression and David just gets it. I love all of his solo albums and it is tragic that possibly his best material was kept under lock and key by Motown until after his death. "Let Somebody Love Me," is my personal favorite David solo track, it explains perfectly the feelings of being a single man and how frustrating it is to see love all around you and not have any yourself.
    Thanks again for this brilliant video, hopefully now the young bucks out there will see David Ruffin not as the "Ain't nobody comin' to see you Otis" guy, but as a multitalented and faceted man whose music has not only helped but inspired millions of people, black and white, across the world. For the record, I am white and I feel this music is not bound to any race, we all feel the themes and rhythms that this music provides us at some point in our lives.
    Long live David Ruffin

    the results of your research are sharp and crisp; the editing is seamless.
    David Ruffin was definitely the main attraction, but it seems that he hadn't developed the psychic connection with Berry as had VP/ co-founder/ top-writer Smokey, the bond that lover, friend, and Motown hood ornament Diana Ross maintained, nor even that which Martha Reeves apparently developed; all of whom went on to garner their names being above their respective groups.
    David was much more of a rebel, and while that contributed to his star persona, as with the unfortunate Flo Ballard, such non-compliance rankled the Motown star-makers.
    Again, excellent job.

    I thought Otis waited til everyone who mattered had passed on to make his Version of The Temptations movie . He knew as long as David and Eddie was alive he would have a fight on his hands . The movie was entertaining at best but not the true how sad because the true was a very interesting story .

    There must have been a lot of bad blood between Otis and David since Otis was one of the producers of the miniseries. For someone like me, not knowing the history, I would have just assumed that David's death happened as it was depicted. That was completely disrespectful to David and his family!

    This is HIGH quality with actual emotion in the voice and good, decent audio and visuals. All these “telling” the stories of the Temptations’ (insert member here) are all repeats of the same basic info. This actually focuses his legacy and analyzes how the miniseries portrayed him.

    David should have signed with a record label that allowed him to write his own songs, in my opinion. Motown never did that. The only artist on the label allowed to write his own material was Smokey Robinson, and that was company politics-he co-owned the label.

    Yes, there were quite a few things in this movie that weren't factual, and not just about David. Just like Ruff being thrown out of a car at a hospital, Mel dying in his mama's kitchen was fiction as well. But movie makers have the license to do this when they make bio pics, so long as they use the disclaimer "based on a true story." Certain things are fictionalized to enhance dramatic effect.

    • @ournb5811
      @ournb5811  Год назад +4

      I am aware of the fact that things were fictionalized to enhance dramatic effect…that doesn’t negate the fact that people take things at face value. For the longest time I believed Melvin died in his mothers kitchen. It’s easy to watch or read something and unintentionally take it in as fact. Thank you for your comment.

    • @lwmson
      @lwmson Год назад +3

      @@ournb5811 I guess what I'm trying to say is that no one should take any movie at face value, because it is after all Hollywood and the primary objective is to entertain and enlightenment is secondary. Thanks for responding.
