I met Marvin Gaye, in 1973. He walked the March of dimes walk a thon, Detroit, Mi.
We walked 17 miles together. I was 13.
I’ll never forget all the things he spoke to me about. What a wonderful mentor. Best day of my life!!

@@susanedrington4878 I can’t remember everything, but he was mostly like a big brother. At first he was asking how we got there, telling us to be careful, etc. after all, we were kids down town alone. He told us who he was, about his music, etc. once he told us who he was, I knew. My Mom had records we played of him and other Motown singers. What I remember most was, he was just a regular guy looking out for two young kids. Like a said, a big brother type thing. We didn’t go all crazy because we were too young to fully understand what his presence meant. After the walk, we were standing by the fountain on Belle Isle and the hosts announced him and called him up on a platform. I was so blessed to have met him. His words still hold me up. He was a kind, simple gifted man.

It's okay to love your father from afar. I love my cousin from a far, but love and trust are not automatically intertwined. I can't trust my cousin as far as I can throw him so he can't be in my life because *his* actions don't scream love for me and our other family members. I've bent over backwards for him, so my conscience is clear and my family duty had been paid. He's not my problem to fix anymore... I pray that one day you'll get to that place with your father.

his father was an alcoholic cross dresser and supposedly a man of God, the mother was an enabler born in a time when a husband ruled the home, she was guilty of allowing it to happen, but at a time when it was common to remain silent and keep the family together. Marvin though... made mistakes, putting off rehab while descending further into drug addiction and paranoia, filling the house with weapons, bringing drug dealers and fellow druggies into the house that his parents lived in (whether he owned it or not), in and out, beating his father that one time even though he must have known on some level what the result might be, even giving his father a gun.
Maybe it was a kind of 'death by father' suicide instead of a 'death by cop' suicide. Maybe it wasn't, we will never know.
Surprised his father got off with a suspended sentence for voluntary manslaughter. It is like there whole lives together, father and son, and the relationship they had, were leading to that one point. where one of them was almost bound to die at the hand of the other.
Though with different choices, it would not have been.

Emotional feelings are highly ranked up there with love. If you don't love you have non of those other emotions of the senses! When men cry especially, black men( many of know in our communities the stigma placed upon African American if they have a moment of emotional caring) you know in the heart the love of another being or brother that meant something to you is gone like that! You know thats a sense of emotion full of love! Crying isn't unmanly its human.

@@Go4Gusto Family violence is often generational--studies show that children who live thru family violence are more likely to become perpetrators or victims themselves as adults. So it's very possible that Marvin was abused by his father, who was in turn abused by *his* father, Marvin's grandfather. The violence may go back generations. And from the video it sounds like Marvin continued the cycle, with his violence & threats to his 2nd wife.
Additionally, studies show those exposed to violence when they're young are more likely to abuse drugs & alcohol as adults, which may give insight into Marvin's addiction. If abuse survivors don't have healthy ways to cope with the trauma they'll often resort to self-medicating with drugs & alcohol to escape the pain.
Fortunately there are many brave souls who break the cycle & learn how to cope without abusing drugs or alcohol, & how to parent without violence & abuse.

Then they should have open-mindedly taken into account the innate personalities, emotional temperaments, intelligence, talents, desires, opinions and needs of the children. My grandfather was the same way. Tyrannical and controlling, including towards my usually loving, tolerant, saintly grandmother (every now and then she would blow up and push back, and he would let up, because he knew he had crossed the line... He didn't want to end up losing her). They cremated Grandpa when he died and never held a memorial service, but because they knew no one would show up. My mother is toxic, uncaring and manipulative. She worked all through my childhood, teens and early adult life to isolate, alienate and cause rifts with me and my siblings, my father and even my partner. My entire childhood was filled with violence, isolation and hate. It got to a point where my own mother influenced my elder brother to attack me when I was at one of my lowest points, and heavily pregnant.
After a significant period of seperation, I forgave my mother at least for the sake of my children having the chance to have a relationship with her as their 'grandmother. Unfortunately that was short lived, my mother continued to manipulate, neglect and make everything about herself and could never truly be counted on. So as difficult as it was (to have to accept that she would never be the loving mother I wished for) I cut ties and kept myself and my children safe from any further damage. So I really resonate with your comment.
P.S despite my mother and i strained relationship, I allowed her to have a relationship with my eldest. Once my siblings both got married, my mother wasn't bothered about me & my children. But when they had their children, they distanced themselves from her and she doesn't even know them! I say that to say that Karma is real, it's simply the science of life!

@t.r8918 I'm so sorry you and your kids went through that. You have to do what is best for you and your kids.
I constantly have this conversation with my mom. I was lucky but she always tries to push MY kids to forgive their dad because that's the only father they will have. I told her we don't do that forgiving toxic family members over here and I definitely don't push my kids to do anything they don't feel comfortable doing. Although my kids are adults, it's up to them but the responsibility to heal the relationship falls on their father.
Even with her family, her brother and father violated me and she acts like if we don't talk about it, it didn't happen and I can forgive. I refused to go to her father's funeral and could give a sh*t about her brother who is incapacitated. She said the way she grew up, people just never talked about issues like that and said that's the problem. Now there's generational trauma and it stops with me and my kids. It's not ok.

He also didnt need to be around his toxic father anymore. Truth is he had a massively successful career already & at 44 was on the downward spiral as a relevant artist. How many singers do you see in the charts that age? Yes he came back with a big hit Sexual healing in 82 but several songs before & after that didnt even chart. I dont understand why he even went back to his family home at 44. Knowing how bad his relationship was with his father. Marvin was always a gentle giant, his life is so inspiring and relatable to mine. Our birthdays are one day apart (not the same year of course), and he's been my inspiration all my life. His music, his good heart, his tenacity, his beauty, his braveness, his pain, his mistakes, and of course, his writing and his everlasting voice will always be my inspiration for the rest of my life. Regardless how long my life may God grand me, I shall do my part just like him, he was truly an angel of a man.

You're not supposed to move a gunshot victim. Let the pros do it. A friend of mine got shot and his friends moved him the bullets moved and infected him. And his body went septic, he lost both his legs.

    • @elviswilliams9990
      @elviswilliams9990 Год назад

@@wadewilson8011 That may be true. However, there are always opposing circumstances. A gunshot victim bled out because the EMS couldn't find the address. The family sued the company and won., To this day, they regretted that they didn't take their family member to the ER themselves. Most importantly, your guy might have lost his legs, but he lived to tell the story. Marvin didn't.

My theory is the father was a child molester and that is the torment that Marvin was living with and I believe Marvin came to confront his abuser after all these years and his father killed him to end the forbidden secret and to end Marvin's suffering that he created.

Yes i have this EXACT theory. The way the father’s crossdressing is always depicted,he was shameless and almost overbearing with it. It would not surprise me in the least if he touched Marvin inappropriately and the mother just turned a blind eye to it.

@Luna EB So you are blaming a person who was a kid at the time he got abused and had to carry that damage with him into adulthood...? Or you just braggin' about yourself ? Don't forget if you had an narcistic, abusive father..chances are you ended up being a narc yourself ! And another thing, if you really had such a father and you stood up to him... it would have made zero difference... so you're lying thru your teeth.

@Luna EB You make it asif a drug abuser is a bad person by definition. Not so... I was one but i changed my ways. Also Chet Baker brought us very beautiful music eventhough he was a drug addict. You sound awefully judgemental. You can be a man all you want but it be a sad thing if you need to look down on others to feel like a man. Just a hint.

I was thirteen when I heard Marvins "What's going on" , I listen to his song over and over until I learned the words. When I finally realized what he was singing about I cried cried. It was the era my upbringing the sixties I experienced, I FELT HIS WORDS. Of course my parents were worried being half Irish/ Mexican the race thing. My love for singing artists of color was strong. However they got over it fast, I would sing around the house, all of Motown I could and other artist I mean I was a kid of the fifty/sixties, right? I cried when I heard Marvin had been killed, and for some reason I knew it was his father. I can't remember just that I knew it was his father. BUT, I did not know his daddy was a Cross dresser,, been there done that and it is not good for the children, Mama should have kicked out Papa a long time ago, maybe it would have saved Marvin. But it appears Marvin was on a road of destruction already. GOD Bless Marvin, I still love his music. Thank you for the video very good.

My mother was like that. A real messed up parent. She didn’t try to earn her own money or move up in life, so she let us all suffer her drunken, cheating messed up husband. Needless to say, she died in the worst of ways and though I’m sad she didn’t get to live a good life, I’m not sorry because she let us suffer to protect her filthy marriage.

Marvin's father, like most religious fanatics, was a hypocrite who detested his son's music career but had little issue other than a bruised ego living off the royalties of it. As for Marvin's mother most women of her generation didn't have a backbone because they weren't given the opportunities to acquire one, especially minorities. Alberta was conditioned to take on that of a loyal, dutiful Christian wife whose entire identity revolved around her husband's orders. I believe, from a psychological standpoint, part of why Alberta adored Marvin Jr so much was because he was the polar opposite of his father and gave her a feeling of love, kindness, and respect that Marvin Sr. didn't provide.
