He was the best Temptations lead singer, but FAR from the greatest singer. Pavarotti wasn't the greatest. I can take you further than him.

I Can’t Stop The Rain when he was with Van McCoy is my favourite song of his. I treasure the night I saw Dave, Eddie Kendricks, and Dennis Edwards when the 3 of them got together and did a Tour. It was fantastic seeing them together singing.

Thank you for this docu. Story told beautifully. I agree, one of the greatest voices to come out of the US, if not the greatest. Songs such as "Wish it would rain", "Walk away from Love", but my most favorite David Ruffin song is "A Rainy Night in Georgia". The way he sang it, you could feel the rain in a melancholic way, the dreariness of that night.
Just some info u guys probably didn't know David Ruffin's first Lead with Temptations was actually You'll Lose A Precious Love. March 1964 his Best performance on any recording in my opinion.

Teddy Pendergrass is my favourite of all time before his accident. Listen to Black and Blue by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes where Teddy was lead singer, his vocals and the orchestra backing him were incredible. That is my favourite Album of all time, I still play it nearly 50 years on, never get tired of it.
David was one of the all time great soul singers, but to me Sam Cooke is #1!!!. Nobody had a better voice.

I totally agree. When we say this, some people get vocalist and artist confused. Marvin is my favorite male artist, and I believe one of the greatest of all time and was a great singer. But when it comes to pure vocals David Ruffin was the truth.

Thanks for doing a good History of David Ruffin he is and will always be my favorite singer, it is sad to hear so much negative talk about a singer who gave us so much beautiful music, he may not have been perfect in his personal life but neither were most of the singers in that era and even today. If you don't know a person it is best to not form a negative opinion of that person based on what you hear, even though they do negative things we have no idea what drives a person to whatever they choose in life, however I really loved all the music that he and the Temptations bought to us in some real bad times as well. Prayers to all of them and their families.
He was great....Fame killed him. He had a great career outside of the Temptations. It was also sad that some of the members of the Temptations had such a tragic life

This is good doc, but the only place where I take issue is with the "Psychedelic Era" of the Temps. David really wasn't part of that era of the group, because it started in 1969 with the "Cloud Nine" album, which was after he left the group. Dennis was the lead by that time.

When Rolling Stone magazine complied its list of the greatest singers of all time, l rejoiced when l saw that David Ruffin was included. There’s absolutely no denying that his raspy soaring tenor was special! His eerily haunting and urgent delivery singing 🎶 lead on “I Wish It Would Rain” was universally hailed as a masterpiece of undeniable rarely seen vocals. He sang heartfelt and as if His life depended on it! THERE WILL BE ANOTHER VOICE LIKE HIS IN OUR LIFETIME!!!!

Good documentary, however a few small things are off.
My father in law was a songwriter and producer at Motown throughout the '60s.
I've had the opportunity to listen to many many accounts of "Life at Motown".
I had the opportunity to speak with Jimmy Ruffin a few years before his passing.
David was in Detroit before Jimmy. He told me he came to Detroit immediately after he was honorably discharged from the army. I do believe he said he was discharged in St. Louis. He mentioned that he'd purchased a new car and drove straight to Detroit! He said Davis took him to "The 20 Grand". A night club in Detroit. Where all the entertainer hung out. Davis introduced him to Mrs. Claudette (Smoky) Robinson. He went to Motown at her invitation.
He signed with Motown. A short time later, maybe a couple of years, he was asked to become a member of the Temptations. He told me he declined the offer, however he convinced them to audition "his brother Daid". He told me that he mentioned to them that "David was perfect! Tall, slim, and could move around much better than he could".
The rest was how you know it today.
The story about David beating Tammi Terrell in the head with a helmet was false as well.
David absolutely adored Tammi, although she'd been in numerous horrible relationships prior, and allegedly a couple during their relationship. Even some with a few of his label mates.
Most notably James Brown. Who, according to several people I've spoke with over the years was extremely abusive to her.
One evening In 1967 Tammi was performing with Marvin Gaye in Virginia. She collapsed on stage and was taken to the hospital.
It was at this time she'd been diagnosed with a malignant tumour on the right side of her brain. I assume the collapsing on stage, along with the headaches is where some of the "Helmut blow to the head" rumors started.
There is at least one thing you won't get any feedback from me, and that is (in my opinion)

If DAVID WOULD'VE WENT TO STAX RECORDS AFTER THE TEMPTATIONS I BELIEVE HE WOULD'VE HAD HUGE SUCCESS JUST LOOK AT THE SUCESS JONNIE TAYLOR HAD AT STAX WITH THE SONG WRITERS AND PRODUCERS THEY HAD I KNOW THAT WITH DAVID'S VOICE HE WOULD'VE BEEN BIG OVER THERE AT STAX.
