GBA SP is the upgraded version of GameBoy Advance released in 2003. The foldable design and frontlight/backlit, as well as the internal lithium-ion, made it become one of the most successful handheld consoles in the world.
As we research the replacement shells and buttons for the GBA SP on the market, we found the mold of them is not precise enough, so we decided to make our own mold. With more accurate mold and made of premium ABS material, the quality of the eXtremeRate housing for GBA SP is one of the best in the world. Just bought and switched over my internals from my snapped black one to this.
2 Complaints:
1. The kit doesn't come with new rollers so you NEED your old ones.
2. The new rubbers feel less responsive than the OG ones. (opened it back up and installed my old rubber pads for better feel)
Everything Else was amazing. Build quality is superb. Feels amazing in hand. The Blue/purple Chameleon buttons I ordered with it look amazing. Install video was solid. 9/10 product and will be buying another in the future.
Only had one issue and that was getting the rotating shafts back in. What worked for me: Open the shell when pushing them back in, works wonders! You don't even have to press hard.
Apart from that, thank you for the tutorial, great vid and great shell. I installed the transparant blue shell with white buttons!

I have one MAJOR complaint about the replacement shell, that being that they don't drill out the holes/threads well enough. I've been sitting here almost an hour trying to get screws to tighten fully. Almost my whol case is loose and wobbly from not being able to fully screw in, since the force needed to thread them basically messes up the actual head
Yeah, I had one hole on the back that was lose. I kept loosening my screw until it pretty much made its own threading. A little messed up, yes, but it seems to only happen on rare occasion

Thanks for the guide, I can't wait until my Chameleon Purple Blue shell comes! This'll be my first shell swap as I tend to keep thing as original as possible, but I loved the color and couldn't pass it up. I'll keep my old shell in the box (which is still in fantastic condition) when I pass along my Nintendo collection to my kids.

EDIT: The only problem/ confusion I had with this shell kit was, that I only got one R replacement spring for the R-button. So you get 4 of them in total of which you would only need one for the L- and one for the R-button. I got 4 of them, so I guess two of them were suppossed to be replacements, but here lies the problem I got 3 L springs and only 1 R spring, not that it would really matter, since you would only need one spring for each side to replace the LR-buttons (you could also use the old ones from your former shell), still as this is somewhat supposed to be a review or helpful comment? I just wanted to remark the small "flaw" of this kit. :)
So yeah I bought myself the blue-purple shimmering shell for 25 euros. Personally I think it looks great even if I do miss the Nintendo logo on the front. Also the tutorial has been of help! While some parts may be confusing and require careful eyes and your unwavering attention, (look into the comments for these parts) in the end I managed to reskin my gba (i am usually bad at these things and never really tried it before).
Even if it took me roughly 3 hours and I even hurt myself a bit lol. So definitely a thumbs up from me! Thank you.

Any advice for getting the rotating shafts out? I thought the kit would include those pieces but now I’m stuck trying to get my ancient ones out of my old SP
Best GBA SP shells money can buy, just swapped my 101 SP with this shell, it looks great and feels amazing. Although nearly perfect, I dont understand why triwing screws are still being used. They are not only inconvenient to troubleshoot when opening the shell, (which you will do multiple times, trust me) but they strip SO easily. I dont know, maybe these screws are just cheap, but they are still inferior to the amount of torque you can put on philips. Not to mention, they strip little to none. I stripped a couple triwings on this shell swap, almost getting the screws stuck in the shell, even with 3+ years of modding experience. I ended up using the phillips included to work on the back side to close it up, maybe this is what they are for? to give you an option of what screw type to use? I am not sure. I used no triwings that were included, and I used every single phillips included, with a combination of whatever short and long screws I had left to close it up. Everything holds up nicely, which is all that matters to me. Please, extremerate, please make phillips a standard… Triwings are useless.
To add, it also would be nice to have seen the screws better like they have done in other tutorial videos, it was very difficult to tell what screw goes where on this video.
Anyone know where I can get the rotating shafts? Amazon has them for 3$ but 10$ delivery fee.
Do the original gba screws fit in the new shell, it would be easier to keep track of which screw goes where because the kit doesn't tell you
For putting in the screws on the top screen I recommend putting the shell on a piece of paper or something that will slide easily on a table inserting the screw putting pressure and rotating the shell instead of the screw. Helped me those tri screws are evil.
This actually worked wonders. thank you for the suggestion!!! spent an hour on this f'n thing. then this method took 2 min.
A word of caution for the people 'hammering out' the hinges as illustrated at 05:00. From personal experience I can tell that there is a reasonable chance of breaking your old shell into pieces because these hinge pieces simply refuse to come out easily. Not a problem if you were not planning on using your old shell ever again of course....

Same, The old shell was very brittle and broke in various areas.
Really would’ve appreciated having all the screws numbered and those corresponding numbers shown on the video as they’re used. I know this isn’t Ikea but when I’m working with this many TINY screws that are barely discernible in length from each other aside from “tiny slightly off white color” and “tiny slightly off bronze color” just.
Insanely frustrating.
Not to mention that, if I hadn’t been replacing 2 gameboy cases and ordered a set of replacement buttons I wouldn’t have had enough screw drivers because the ones with the orange handle are frustratingly easy to strip.

great shell, my only problem is that after time it starts to turn brown in the corners. I've tried to wipe it off but no luck. It might have to do with the softtouch coating though I'm not completely sure why. If anyone here has any tips on how to remove the discoloring it would be greatly appreciated

Hey, does it make a difference if I order this shell from your store (I think you are based in the US?) directly or from AliExpress (which I think is shipping from china)? I am in Europe and the shells are not currently available on Amazon, so I was wondering if there was a difference.
If you buy from AliExpress you get bad quality products which are simply reps of original products and 2 month shipping which is an eternity
Great tutorial, but I'm a little confused on the rotating shaft installations. At time stamps 6:30 and 7:10 there are images showing the wrong way to install. The images look basically the same to what is being film so can you explain it in more detail please?
Please check carefully on the COVER of the rotating shaft of the "wrong" images, there is a notch on the side of that small cover, which can help you know if you insert the shaft in the correct direction.
So I did everything but my hinge feels loose now, it clicks when you open it but not when you close it

Would be really sweet if you guys could make a sp unhinged version in ABS. The Aloys from boxypixel are great but just way too expensive. And since you already have the best quality shells out there. 🙏👌

Are the SP shells pre-trimmed for IPS screens or do they need to be modified to fit a Funnyplaying V2 screen?

My orange screwdriver is defective it didn’t work at all on any of the screws the black one did though
Up the cost of the shells and include replacement hinges because me they do not come out as always as shown in the video.

Same thing happened to me. Try disconnecting the screen ribbon from the board and clean both the contacts on the ribbon and the connector on the board with a toothbrush or q-tip using your strongest IPA. That worked for me!
There’s no mention of how to fix the sponge for the clear shell?
The sponge that came with it is actually way too damn thick and the top cover doesn’t even fit on. I struggled screwing the top cover on so hard my (tiny itty bitty) 3-prong screwdriver slipped and scratched the screen

hi, when I go to assemble the new shell, I have difficulty understanding where to put the right screws back, how do I know which screws go on the shell, which go on the motherboard, which go on the screen?
You can help it by organizing the screws at the beginning. Don't just unscrew them and throw them anywhere. If it's needed, write things down, get one of those screw organizer boxes or something. The video shows it very badly because the person doing this has zero regard for how to remember where to put which screw back.
I followed the guide to a T but the one spot I got ahead (literally 3 seconds ahead) was when I went to remove my volume knob. It was unremovable as I quickly learned when it broke off and flew across the room. I hit play on the video and the next frame was it saying it was unremovable. Sigh
I bought the Great Wave shell too and it is amazing. Great quality and I absolutely loved it. But I have some issues I wanna talk about:
The screws used in this video didnt fit my shell. I dont know if you changed the screws in this last shells or what, but i couldnt fit the same screws in the same places that is shown in this video. I think i didnt use a single "tri-wing screw" in the hole shell. Actually yes, i only used the final 4 tri-wing screws to screw the bottom-back part of the shell. But what i had to do in many cases is use the "Phillips screws" (the ones that have a cross) in places where the tri-wing screw didnt fit (but in the video they fitted!), and I even had to use screws from the older shell so i had no problems. It would be nice if you showed better what screws to use in every place in this guide (maybe a very close up ZOOM at the screw or maybe group them and name them with some type of code or something like that).
Another litle thing, with this shell i bought A and B buttons feel kinda flimsy, as if they couldn't be fully pressed (but i would say they feel ok). I compared the original GBA A and B buttons with the extremeRate ones and the original ones feel better. All other buttons feel perfect!
Having said that, great tutorial overall and great product!!

@@ExtremeRate Yes I tried using the old rubber pad but it feels the same. As I said, the AB buttons feel ok, its just the original ones feels a little bit better but it's not a big problem. I am using the extremeRate AB buttons anyways, thanks!

Bought a case from this company off of Amazon. I tried to follow this tutorial and without any item description/or any audio instructions as they don't have any I ended up using the wrong screws on it and ruined the brand new case I bought. If you were to make this type of video have a parts list or something to make sure people can follow you step by step
my only complaint is that screws are not in separate bags and labeled, I used the wrong screw and damaged my shell
Unless your old screws are rusted and stripped to hell, I'd advise to never use any aftermarket screws.

Followed these instructions but now my GBA SP doesn’t turn on. When I try to charge it, the orange light comes on and turns off immediately.

I recently bought 2 Sets from EXtremeRate. An Xbox Series Controller Front Shell and a White Transparent Thumbsticks-Set for my Series Controller DTF LED Kit as a Replacement bc my Old Whit Ones are yellowed. The Sticks are already here and the Front Shell that should Ariive mid May updated to Mid April. Next time when I have Enough Money again I will Buy the LED kits and Front Shell for my Nintendo Switch. 👍🏻

WARNING! - this shell is made of that soft plastic that picks up fingerprints and yellows very easily. I had it for 2 days before it was yellow in the corners no doritos no nonsense. This is disappointing because the kit seemed very high quality it is just a glaring flaw I wanted to make sure others were aware of.
Holes drilled improperly on red shell, making it nearly impossible to put (yes, the correct) screws in.
