It’s a great mod. But would advise the following: 1. Hinges- While closed, move the holding clips in slightly using a small plastic driver ( so not to scratch them) Move the shell to the open position and then push the hinges out, they will then come out intact and without issue. Keep left for left and right for right. Then push the hinges in to the new shell while it is in the open position ( open position ensure they slide in without fuss and without snapping your case) 2. Cable - the cable should be wrapped round in the other direction to ensure there is no snagging. 3. Power- it uses way more power than the frontlit model. You’ll be looking at around 3.5hrs on the mid brightness setting. Frontlit gave around 8hrs.

WARNIING: coming from someone who's done a ton of these mods. The replacement hinges may not support the caps from the shell. Cutting inside the caps may be necessary. Example, scroll through: instagram.com/p/CCt9cmXnAoG/ 4:24 that's the wrong way to install the hinges. The screen has to be installed in it's open position otherwise it can break the plastic. See link above. They will slide in nicely if done correctly.
I just completed this mod and have a few pointers during reassembly: 1. Inserting new hinges can be a nightmare and the caps are easily damaged. What worked for me was to insert 3/4 of the way and open the screen to the normal viewing angle. Then pushed them in bracing against a soft piece of wood that's covered. Once popped in I could finish with my thumb. 2. Watch the soldered wire placement when assembling. The wire tends to want to lay over the button membranes. 3. The square nut for the battery door likes to fall out or push out easily when closing the battery door which means another disassembly. 4. The power switch can get out of alignment during assembly so keep an eye on that. I slid it to its mid position and aligned the plastic slider over it while on the button side of the unit, not the final back cover.
Thanks for the video/tutorial! A couple of things I noticed after completing my build: 1. The supplied membranes are junk. They are too thin and allow the A and B buttons to rotate under the shell and get stuck. Ended up swapping my originals back in. 2. The supplied screws are also junk. The heads strip way too easily. Definitely reuse your original screws (including the one for the battery door). 3. Don't forget to install the little female square that the battery door screw screws into under the bottom shell half. If you forget, you'll have to go back in, which means removing (and reinstalling) the 6 tri-wing screws, which further weakens the plastic threads in these cheap aftermarket shells.
This is a beautiful build. I was stunned to see, at the 8:10 mark, that the logo for SMW looked like it was popping right of the display! I actually find the IPS to detract from some of the crisp visible pixel look of the AGS-101 screen. something i didn’t expect until I saw one in person
Yeah, they really made that "SP" look horrible. The "GameBoy Advance" part looks the part, but that "SP" might as well have been in Comic Sans for how poorly it matches.

The last one was a gift for my cousin and man he was blown away. Thanks for the fantastic video. It made everything so easy
for me personally i prefer the retro look of the 101. I was comparing pokemon emerald and the title image is so crisp on the IPS that you can see the dithering on the title screen. With the 101, there is such a low amount of PPI that it creates a scanline esque effect, making the dithering appear to be a blended image. Thus all sprites don't appear as much like a mosaic of pixels but rather a complete drawn image. The IPS wins in color clarity and saturation though by far. No comparison there. But it also sucks up more power and has a lower battery life. I think there are pros and cons to each and i am happy to own both an IPS and an AGS. I think the IPS makes me kinda feel like i'm playing on an emulator while the AGS makes me feel like i'm playing on the real deal... Even though the IPS is running native hardware and not emulating at all.
I grew up with an AGS 101 and when I grew up I got a gameboy again and was disappointed with the poor screen. Come to find out it was an AGS 001 and I fondly remembered the 101. Recently found the 001 so I'm gonna try this mod on it! Thank you brotha!
I mean, the AGS-101 display is amazing, but an IPS screen somehow blows out of the water, with more brightness than most will realistically ever need, and more accurate colors.
Just did this mod a few days ago and it came out great! The screen looks more crisp and even brighter! I also got a new shell, the clear watermelon Red with clear black buttons. Looks awesome now. Big upgrade from that Red 001 model lol

Just a few days ago i grabbed 101 for 40$ and i really like that screen. It produces image very different from ips mod because pixels are big and you can clearly see the grid. But it also has this slight analogue feel almost like a crt because when you look at it pixels seems not to be perfect squares. It's a great screen and ips mod while uses modern, faster lcd panel, is not comparable.

The sharpness, size, and pixel response are a step up from the 101, but I just can't get over the issues that MLiG has pointed out. With more revisions of the cable assembly, I think this could legitimately replace 101 screens.

I have two AGS 001 units I picked up at a facebook marketplace sale about 6 years ago with the horrible front lit screens. A little while back, I ordered a pre made original GBA with funnyplaying IPS from funnyplaying. I paid around $100. I figured the cost of assembly, plus the cool printed box for it, and the neoprene sleeve and shipping was $20 and way worth it. I just recently ordered an IPSv2 kit for one of my AGS 001 units. Can't wait to get it in the mail. I love the gameboy advance line and it appears you do as well (I saw those two GBA micros hanging out on the intro.... wish I never sold mine!)
I would've liked to see a USB Type-C mod for charging the battery rather than the traditional Charger Port of the SP. That said this looks really dope and if I ever find my old SP I might give this a whirl.
Ordered the Parts right away^^ Hope it will look as stunning on my trusty old gba sp as it looks on yours^^ Only thing is... I live in germany... Hope it gets here asap!
While I cannot deny that the 101's screen does look a lot nicer than the original SP model... well this is probably entirely my nostalgia talking but I still feel like the screen of the original model kinda has its own charm to it?
Oof... Maybe, maybe not... Maybe the Nintendo DS... But good lord, the "New" 3DS XL had the same problem. "They" *Nintendo* purposely used old TN screens like the ones used in the first Nintendo DS onto their "New 3DS XL" rather than using IPS Screens or even have screens and games higher than 240p. Even worse is that in order to avoid the great debate of "001 or 101" they got rid of Model ID numbers and instead they went Willy Wonka with this and purposely threw in random chances to open an IPS screen vs a TN screen. No wonder they "Switched".
I bought my mod parts through Hand Held Legend and produced a few cool modded GBAs. They sent replacement parts for a few that I had trouble with at almost no extra cost.
This is really tempting. I told myself no more mods until my analogue pocket arrives. But I have 2 or 3 ags100s sitting around thatll never be used as is.
I'm a using my nintendo 2ds xl as a handheld for retro gaming, so I don't think I'm going to get any Gameboy, but I find very satisfying to see this kind of videos.
I watched this video three days ago. Spent every day since trying to find one locally. No luck. Today, I sniped one off of eBay with the express intent of doing this mod.
"Better" is subjective. Too bad, it's best to see these things in person. The IPS screens can produce some weird visual artifacts in some games. I keep a stock 101 around for compatibility reasons.
The motion blur on the 101 is a bigger issue for me. I will straight up not play any sidescrollers on a 101. That's why I keep a 001 because it has better refresh rate (and looks better when playing outside)
I just checked my GBA SP that I got for Christmas as a kid. It's the 101 version. I almost threw it out a while back because the top is scratched to shit and it's the hideous light pink color. Can't believe it still has some value!
Better is subjective. The 1:1 screen is my main reason to play GB/GBC/GBA on an AGS-101. For me the screen is the most unique part of the Gameboy playing experience. Replicating 240x160 without stretching the screen or increasing the pixel count always looks different. Form factor and gameplay are far more easier to replicate through clone consoles. If the screen doesn't matter then its a far better investing to get a clone console that can do more.
Between you and Elliot from The Retro Future, inches me closer to one day getting the kit for my original AGS001 but at the same time, I would also want to get an original GBA and get the kit for that too. I do greatly miss that form factor over the SP model.
this is great to know just ordered a 001 off of ebay & meant to get an 101 but it was less than half the price, going to toss a new IPS screen & hope it helps! cheers mate,
I had no idea about the different models. I just bought an AGS101 with two gameboy and GameCube link cables for like 70 bucks. This vid was super helpful in terms of breaking down/installing a new shell, which I might do because it is quite scratched up
I actually purchased and installed one of these only to be completely blindsided by the fact that the display is actually a different refresh rate, meaning some frames are duplicated leading to a very choppy signal. I purchased it from the link in the description so I know i didn't get the wrong one.
@@ameerhamid89 this guy in this video says he's using the funnyplaying screen, but the one he links to in the description is actually an unbranded knockoff (funnyplaying's official website has a guide for identifying them). buy the screen directly from funnyplaying.

Beautiful looking GameBoy
I would've liked to see a USB Type-C mod for charging the battery rather than the traditional Charger Port of the SP. That said this looks really dope and if I ever find my old SP I might give this a whirl.
Ordered the Parts right away^^ Hope it will look as stunning on my trusty old gba sp as it looks on yours^^ Only thing is... I live in germany... Hope it gets here asap!
Great IPS Mall in your game boy advance SP I like what you did with it I like the transparent case in the blue buttons
I’m ready to put the iPs in my gba now! It was a toss up between you and macho nacho. You edge out over him. I’m going with your tutorial :)
Thanks so much for this video! Its easy to follow, concise and helped me successfully mod my old AGS 001.
Looks amazing I guess I'll mod my original SP then. Been dying to get my hands on the 1st GBA to do mods, going with the anodized buttons
I followed this and my old gba is a masterpiece with the screen
I bought my mod parts through Hand Held Legend and produced a few cool modded GBAs. They sent replacement parts for a few that I had trouble with at almost no extra cost.
Wow. Very nice. The new screen looks amazing. Great work
What an image! What a colour scheme 😂👍👍 This and a stacked flash card 🚽
WOW i need this, tomorrow i get one Gameboy Advance SP, then i will make this, it looks just great!!!
You have great, comprehensive content man. Thank you.
Found my old 001 at my moms the other day, battery was fried so ordered a new one and forgot how bad the screen was, ordering one of these today!
Used your video as a guide. Thanks!
This is awesome! Also, you have an extra case that you could clean up and give a fresh paint job to.
That looks sweet. My (GBA) would love this kind of upgrade.
5:30: “Try to solder through the viewfinder of a camera and tell me your hands aren’t shaky” 🤣... I feel your pain.
If anyone selling a GBA or SP with these mods already don’t I’m def interested in purchasing
I do
Check eBay lots on there
I do comissions and I have some prebuilt already
@@asherfilms923 where do you sell from? I am interested.

I just checked my GBA SP that I got for Christmas as a kid. It's the 101 version. I almost threw it out a while back because the top is scratched to shit and it's the hideous light pink color. Can't believe it still has some value!
I want this! I have a 001 & it's in great shape. Haven't used it in about 11 yrs. I would love to upgrade this brighter screen into it
you should get a new battery for it
Better is subjective.
THIS IS SOOOO COOOOL!!!! ❤ I do mis my ye ol SP from back in the days!
0:00 now that's an advanced console collection of GAMEBOY ADVANCE.
frontlit 001 which I can play in broaddaylight’s still my fav
Just ordered it and a shell. I can't wait.
The better thing about the og Gameboy SP screen is it works great outdoors or in brightly lit area and that's the only thing led screens are bad at
Between you and Elliot from The Retro Future, inches me closer to one day getting the kit for my original AGS001 but at the same time, I would also want to get an original GBA and get the kit for that too. I do greatly miss that form factor over the SP model.
the LED screens looks Amazing
I love it! That's a thing a beauty and one of the nicest Gameboys I have ever seen!
The text that flashes at 5:29 says "Try to solder through the viewfinder of a camera and tell me your hands aren't shaky". You're welcome.
this is great to know just ordered a 001 off of ebay & meant to get an 101 but it was less than half the price, going to toss a new IPS screen & hope it helps! cheers mate,
just installed the screen, looks incredible & found a headphone jack adapter that goes in the charging port for 3 dollars
My one advice is that the original Nintendo shells are much better quality than any replica shell I've tried. I restore the original shells in stead
Swear to goodness that you can make a GBA SP from scratch from Handheld Legend
Great IPS mod on a game boy advance SP it looks awesome and I like it too thanks
Wow, beautiful end product!
I had no idea about the different models. I just bought an AGS101 with two gameboy and GameCube link cables for like 70 bucks. This vid was super helpful in terms of breaking down/installing a new shell, which I might do because it is quite scratched up
Where did you find the 101 if you don’t mind me asking?
@@bennyjames7806 I use an app called Mercari. I don’t think the seller knew about the models though because it wasn’t mentioned in the description
Really digging the case. I have 2 101s that are in desperate need of new shells. It's like the Nintendonium was skipped on that version
I actually purchased and installed one of these only to be completely blindsided by the fact that the display is actually a different refresh rate, meaning some frames are duplicated leading to a very choppy signal. I purchased it from the link in the description so I know i didn't get the wrong one.
That's discouraging to hear . . . did you ever find a fix for the issue?
@@ameerhamid89 this guy in this video says he's using the funnyplaying screen, but the one he links to in the description is actually an unbranded knockoff (funnyplaying's official website has a guide for identifying them). buy the screen directly from funnyplaying.
@@JessicaIn3D Thanks for the tip. Bit odd that he uses one thing and links another. I'll be sure to buy the real deal if and when I do the mod
Great video, and loving the channel. Subbed and excited to watch more!
I would totally have shaky hands while soldering, even while not even trying through the viewfinder of a camera, Colin
Yisus Man its amazing , Best regards from México
I just got my yellow game boy shell see through with the ips screen maaaan this was the best 55 dollars I’ve sent I Absolutely love it
7:00 "Metal Orjects"
The one on the website spells "Burns" as "Bruns" too. Point for inconsistency.
If you think that's bad, the French on that battery has waaay more mistakes than the English, it's really bad. Both words misspelled, missing punctuation, and letters swapped with somewhat similar shaped ones.
Excellent work. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed
Wish you used the glow in the dark hardware, just to see how they would look compared to the what you used.
