It’s a great mod. But would advise the following:
1. Hinges- While closed, move the holding clips in slightly using a small plastic driver ( so not to scratch them)
Move the shell to the open position and then push the hinges out, they will then come out intact and without issue. Keep left for left and right for right.
Then push the hinges in to the new shell while it is in the open position ( open position ensure they slide in without fuss and without snapping your case)
2. Cable - the cable should be wrapped round in the other direction to ensure there is no snagging.
3. Power- it uses way more power than the frontlit model. You’ll be looking at around 3.5hrs on the mid brightness setting. Frontlit gave around 8hrs.
Please pin this! I see SO many people damaging the hinges because they don't remove/replace them while the screen and body are open.
I think thats what the new batteries are for correct? To extend it to about where it would normally be? Asking bc im planning on doing this to a ags 001 i bought for $10 with a broken screen
so if I don't know how to put the wire to adjust brightness its gonna be stuck on the highest setting, if thats the case ill probably get 2 hrs on it if im lucky
@@azgrafflife bummer dude, time to learn how to solder ! haha
Isn't the point of the new battery to extend the battery life of the system
I just did my 2nd IPS mod last night. It's unbelievable how good it makes these tiny lil memory makers look. Solid video!
What about battery consuming? Og battery won’t last more than 2-3 hours?
@@avsv666 huh? I thought it was 8 hours. Get a new battery mate
How’s your battery life? I’m debating getting my sp modded!
@@JeanRodo I replaced the battery in mine 6-7 years ago. Will last about 3-4 hours and I usually keep the brightness around the mid setting (3 or 4).
Other than the motherboard what else was stock after the mod?
This is a beautiful build. I was stunned to see, at the 8:10 mark, that the logo for SMW looked like it was popping right of the display! If I used my SPs more often I would definitely consider installing one of these kits, especially since I could go ballistic with the different color and shell styles, and maybe even go nuts with some RGB LED installation. Fantastic work as always!
That blue and clear combo looks great! Nice work Colin!
My dad gave me an AGS101 when he came back from Iraq back in Christmas of 2005. Would love to have a spare like this!
My neighbors sold me 2 AGS-101 GBA SP for $80 three years ago, best value I ever had. Only problem is he lost the power adapters to charge em so I had to buy USB charging wires from China instead in able to charge them.
I'm impressed by how calming your videos are, especially those about mod. It's almost like a smr.
This is not properly a mod, it is a total conversion!
Simply amazing.
Wow, things changed in 2 years. 30-40$ for a working gameboy is insane. A non-working scrap 001 costs double that now
They're not worth it. Neither of them. A dslite plays GBA and GB games and looks better and costs half of what they do
Yep. GameCubes were like $40 complete about 10 years ago.
Thanks to every retro RUclipsr calling it the "bESt" or "MIsUnDerStooD consOLE OF ALl tiME" made every fucking hoarding collector buy like 5 of them. I both like and fuckin hate RUclips channels that bring attention to that shit because people flock to certain games and consoles because of it.
WARNIING: coming from someone who's done a ton of these mods. The replacement hinges may not support the caps from the shell. Cutting inside the caps may be necessary. Example, scroll through:
instagram.com/p/CCt9cmXnAoG/
4:24 that's the wrong way to install the hinges. The screen has to be installed in it's open position otherwise it can break the plastic. See link above. They will slide in nicely if done correctly.
Thanks.. I hate to install hinge in GBA & DS :(
@@overdriver99 It's the worst
He did it with the shell closed
@@DMTune Need to do it open.
@@DMTune Yeah he did it wrong. Trust.
This was awesome man, easy to do as well. Definitely gonna buy another AGS - 001 to use the motherboard and make one of these myself. Great video!
Love your upgrade videos! Much love from Australia 😊
Awesome build video, like your channel.
You have a really great GBA Collection 😲
Thank you so much for this video!
Since the kit didn't include instructions I got pretty stuck on the hinges and the soldering for the brightness button. But with the help this video I was able to complete this mod by myself without much previous modding experience.
Always impressed by how clean and precise your work is. Would love to hire you to install a UniBIOS mod on my AES!
The video quality is simply spectacular. Congratulations for creating such great content!
I was hoping to see you install IPS screen on Sony PSP. Love your vid, this one definately a satisfaction
Why people hate so much the original screens and scanlines? The games on GBA / PSP looks so terrible playing on LCDs o.O
Handheld Legend getting more of my money thanks to Colin! Thanks, Colin! Great video.
I’m so happy I remembered which tutorial video to watch. I’m back to this one with a new IPS V2 for a beat up scratched gba sp I got for $20. I can’t wait to repeat the same magic. The last one was a gift for my cousin and man he was blown away. Thanks for the fantastic video. It made everything so easy
Thanks so much for this video! Its easy to follow, concise and helped me successfully mod my old AGS 001.
Wow that clear gba looks awesome, I love the blue buttons you picked for it. The screen looks great as well. I may go this route to get another gba.
Just did this mod, and absolutely love it, also soldered the one wire for brightness control!
Great video! I'd really like to put that screen on my Minish Cap GBA SP, the colours seem amazing!
I did mine the night before last. I love it!
You have great, comprehensive content man. Thank you.
Wow. Very nice. The new screen looks amazing. Great work
Just finished upgrading my 001. This video is great and I'm glad I was able to restore one to better than new. Thank you
That is great news. I have the 001 bought on release day, and screen was by biggest gripe. Now I have to do mine too.
Did you solder the wire? If so did you use flux?
Ordered the Parts right away^^ Hope it will look as stunning on my trusty old gba sp as it looks on yours^^ Only thing is... I live in germany... Hope it gets here asap!
Just installed one of these a week ago. Definitely worth it imo.
Do you think it is compatible with modded GBA? I already modded the SP display onto it. Maybe I can upgrade using this???
THIS IS SOOOO COOOOL!!!! ❤ I do mis my ye ol SP from back in the days!
Great IPS Mall in your game boy advance SP I like what you did with it I like the transparent case in the blue buttons
Just ordered it and a shell. I can't wait.
I picked up a 001 a little while back for 5 bucks so I will definitely be getting this. Thank you.
Did it work out? Asking because I really want to get a 001 and give it a try
Used your video as a guide. Thanks!
Thanks for the video/tutorial! A couple of things I noticed after completing my build:
1. The supplied membranes are junk. They are too thin and allow the A and B buttons to rotate under the shell and get stuck. Ended up swapping my originals back in.
2. The supplied screws are also junk. The heads strip way too easily. Definitely reuse your original screws (including the one for the battery door).
3. Don't forget to install the little female square that the battery door screw screws into under the bottom shell half. If you forget, you'll have to go back in, which means removing (and reinstalling) the 6 tri-wing screws, which further weakens the plastic threads in these cheap aftermarket shells.
Wow, beautiful end product!
That was a great video man!
I love it! That's a thing a beauty and one of the nicest Gameboys I have ever seen!
the screen is so sharp, i've ordered one of these on ebay with a ez flash omega, i'm gonna have a load of fun with this plus my huge original gb collection too, i have this one after losing my ags 101 but that doesn't matter anymore with this cool mod! and improvements i have the lime green case with glow in the dark buttons, that thing is wild!
I’m ready to put the iPs in my gba now! It was a toss up between you and macho nacho. You edge out over him. I’m going with your tutorial :)
I just completed this mod and have a few pointers during reassembly:
1. Inserting new hinges can be a nightmare and the caps are easily damaged. What worked for me was to insert 3/4 of the way and open the screen to the normal viewing angle. Then pushed them in bracing against a soft piece of wood that's covered. Once popped in I could finish with my thumb.
2. Watch the soldered wire placement when assembling. The wire tends to want to lay over the button membranes.
3. The square nut for the battery door likes to fall out or push out easily when closing the battery door which means another disassembly.
4. The power switch can get out of alignment during assembly so keep an eye on that. I slid it to its mid position and aligned the plastic slider over it while on the button side of the unit, not the final back cover.
I have a AGS-101 and also some AGS-001 , for sure i will mod one of the 001 and make a IPS one! This looks amazing!
Great video, and loving the channel. Subbed and excited to watch more!
I rebuilt my SP with a IPS screen and a NES style shell. I absolutely love it.
Very nice! Ordering now!
Looks amazing I guess I'll mod my original SP then. Been dying to get my hands on the 1st GBA to do mods, going with the anodized buttons
Yisus Man its amazing , Best regards from México
This is awesome! Also, you have an extra case that you could clean up and give a fresh paint job to.
Just did this mod a few days ago and it came out great! The screen looks more crisp and even brighter! I also got a new shell, the clear watermelon Red with clear black buttons. Looks awesome now. Big upgrade from that Red 001 model lol
when playing games did u notice any thing weird like ur character moving slow or shadows or ghosting as they say?
WOW i need this, tomorrow i get one Gameboy Advance SP, then i will make this, it looks just great!!!
Great IPS mod on a game boy advance SP it looks awesome and I like it too thanks
Your videos are great and easy to follow
This is really tempting. I told myself no more mods until my analogue pocket arrives. But I have 2 or 3 ags100s sitting around thatll never be used as is.
That looks great man ! 👍
Awesome! I'll have to give this one a try!
Wow, you can tell handheld legends loves your coverage. XD
What an image! What a colour scheme 😂👍👍 This and a stacked flash card 🚽
I grew up with an AGS 101 and when I grew up I got a gameboy again and was disappointed with the poor screen. Come to find out it was an AGS 001 and I fondly remembered the 101. Recently found the 001 so I'm gonna try this mod on it! Thank you brotha!
Great Video as always!
this is great to know just ordered a 001 off of ebay & meant to get an 101 but it was less than half the price, going to toss a new IPS screen & hope it helps! cheers mate,
just installed the screen, looks incredible & found a headphone jack adapter that goes in the charging port for 3 dollars
You definitely deserve a thumbs up
Dude, I wanna BUY that from you soo bad. I'm tempted to get a GBA SP, Had some of the greatest moments in my childhood with that.
The kits they sell are sold by aliexpress for 50 dollars including the precut case. Saved me 20-30 bucks then ebay or amazon
Wow, Great work!!
Beautiful looking GameBoy
I actually find the IPS to detract from some of the crisp visible pixel look of the AGS-101 screen. something i didn’t expect until I saw one in person
That looks sweet. My (GBA) would love this kind of upgrade.
I followed this and my old gba is a masterpiece with the screen
Geez finally an upload. Please don’t leave us hanging this long again. I need your videos
I’ve had a new episode every week pretty consistently now...I’m guessing RUclips isn’t sending notifications again?
I just finish my mod and is super awesome 👌 thanks for all the info I buy all the tools I need for this mod in the description below thanks🙂👍
I'm a using my nintendo 2ds xl as a handheld for retro gaming, so I don't think I'm going to get any Gameboy, but I find very satisfying to see this kind of videos.
I have two AGS 001 units I picked up at a facebook marketplace sale about 6 years ago with the horrible front lit screens. A little while back, I ordered a pre made original GBA with funnyplaying IPS from funnyplaying. I paid around $100. I figured the cost of assembly, plus the cool printed box for it, and the neoprene sleeve and shipping was $20 and way worth it.
I just recently ordered an IPSv2 kit for one of my AGS 001 units. Can't wait to get it in the mail. I love the gameboy advance line and it appears you do as well (I saw those two GBA micros hanging out on the intro.... wish I never sold mine!)
Absolutely badass!
for me personally i prefer the retro look of the 101. I was comparing pokemon emerald and the title image is so crisp on the IPS that you can see the dithering on the title screen. With the 101, there is such a low amount of PPI that it creates a scanline esque effect, making the dithering appear to be a blended image. Thus all sprites don't appear as much like a mosaic of pixels but rather a complete drawn image. The IPS wins in color clarity and saturation though by far. No comparison there. But it also sucks up more power and has a lower battery life. I think there are pros and cons to each and i am happy to own both an IPS and an AGS. I think the IPS makes me kinda feel like i'm playing on an emulator while the AGS makes me feel like i'm playing on the real deal... Even though the IPS is running native hardware and not emulating at all.
I did this to my GBA SP and change the shell, It's looking epic now! After so many years that the screen has been broken. Wish I could show it.
Once again Collin this was made with great production value! You even make it seem super easy !
Just built one of these for a friend! It's really a gorgeous display! And hopefully it'll bring down the price AGS-101
101s are still expensive but idc i have this nice ips screen now 😚😚
dang, very slick mod!
I want this! I have a 001 & it's in great shape. Haven't used it in about 11 yrs. I would love to upgrade this brighter screen into it
you should get a new battery for it
awsome! great job!
the LED screens looks Amazing
Found my old 001 at my moms the other day, battery was fried so ordered a new one and forgot how bad the screen was, ordering one of these today!
Just a few days ago i grabbed 101 for 40$ and i really like that screen. It produces image very different from ips mod because pixels are big and you can clearly see the grid. But it also has this slight analogue feel almost like a crt because when you look at it pixels seems not to be perfect squares.
It's a great screen and ips mod while uses modern, faster lcd panel, is not comparable.
Interesting take. I can't wait to get a flashcart so I can experience my 101 and relive all those memories. Tell me, where were you able to find such a great deal for yours?
@@nikolacatlak9875 deal comes from the part of the world where 101 is just an obsolete console and ebay scalpers are not a thing (because there's no ebay)
I bought my mod parts through Hand Held Legend and produced a few cool modded GBAs. They sent replacement parts for a few that I had trouble with at almost no extra cost.
So basically you don't even need to buy an AGS 001, just order everything through handheld legend.
You need the mother board
You need the mother board
You can't play without the motherboard. Unless HHL sells those, too.
@@handlesarestupid154 Can I do this mod just buying the Motherboard as opposed to the whole system?
@@BlueKey962 yeah, but good luck finding just the motherboard for sale
Good job!
5:30: “Try to solder through the viewfinder of a camera and tell me your hands aren’t shaky” 🤣... I feel your pain.
I had no idea about the different models. I just bought an AGS101 with two gameboy and GameCube link cables for like 70 bucks. This vid was super helpful in terms of breaking down/installing a new shell, which I might do because it is quite scratched up
Where did you find the 101 if you don’t mind me asking?
@@bennyjames7806 I use an app called Mercari. I don’t think the seller knew about the models though because it wasn’t mentioned in the description
Doing it so hyped
Great video Colin. Would love to see your take on the BoxyPixel aluminium shells.
It's just gorgeous,i wish i have that mod
I have a modded sp I also got a clear green case for it and clear pink buttons for a splatoon theme and it looks really neat
It does bug me that they rarely get the logos right on replica lenses.
You can get your own but it's difficult to put on without getting dust in.
Grab one without logo at Retro Modding then :D
Yeah, they really made that "SP" look horrible. The "GameBoy Advance" part looks the part, but that "SP" might as well have been in Comic Sans for how poorly it matches.
I guess it's a licensing thing? If they made it identical I assume Nintendo would have a fit re bootleg parts, and like i guess it makes it obvious it's an aftermarket product.
for context i also think the replacement logo looks shit
@@AlexCheerNZ It still looks similar enough to cause market confusion. If you are going to do trademark infringement, you might as well do it right.
frontlit 001 which I can play in broaddaylight’s still my fav
Wow that screen is so good
thanks for doing this
This is awesome i want it!!
Realy a nice job 👍✅
Really digging the case. I have 2 101s that are in desperate need of new shells. It's like the Nintendonium was skipped on that version
I would've liked to see a USB Type-C mod for charging the battery rather than the traditional Charger Port of the SP. That said this looks really dope and if I ever find my old SP I might give this a whirl.
well it's a good thing i was patient and got my GBA SP right at the end
I bought my 101 for $5 at a garage sale years ago. While I have no intent of replacing the screen, I've been thinking about getting a replacement shell for years (the original Pearl pink shell is scratched and damaged).
Seeing how easy the mod actually is has me wanting to take a crack at it soon.
Also on the battery swap, I can't recommend that enough to any SP user, I bought some $10 one off Amazon and it's worked wonders.
go the extra and refinish the original case and custom paint it. Or send it to custom nes guy to do it. facebook.com/Customnesguy/
Funny how I ended up with the same route as you, but I was given it for free with a DS Lite, and I recently shell-swapped it
