Just a little tip for those who might not have noticed, when screwing screws into softer plastic, turn the screw the opposite way slightly, you'll hear a slight click if the screw holes have already been threaded. I'm not sure if the RetroModding shell has pre-threaded screw holes, but it's still a good practice just so you don't accidentally wreck the threads.

I love your intro. Flipping through all the different consoles with the upbeat music is soothing. Is there any reason the new shell doesn't come with the hinge pieces? How is the shell trimmed compared to an original gba sp?
That's awesome! One easy thing you could try is moving the volume slider up and down repeatedly for a little while and see if that solves the issue. A lot of the times, corrosion builds up on the contacts of the slider and causes it to lose its connection. Moving it up and down will remove that corrosion and potentially restore it. No problem SamuaX! The double sided tape is option but does help with install. You can even use some kapton tape instead of double sided tape as well. The double sided tape I use is 3M Scotch. Hope that helps! Cheers!
When installing an IPS screen, if I were to not connect the wire, how would the screen be affected? Would it stay on the brightest setting or will the backlight not turn on?
I believe it will stay at the default brightness. In my opinion the default brightness is plenty bright. The wire only enables dimming function and is completely optional. I hope this helps! Cheers!
So you say the wire you used for the brightness mod came with the case you ordered? But magnet wire can be used interchangably? Very informative. Liked
Idk if it is just my childhood rose tinted glasses getting in the way, but I swear the my GBA SP used to look as good as this mod does, but when I play on it today, it’s a really washed out and dim image. I will definitely be looking into an IPS display mod for my GBA as it is still the best way to play these games for me (my DS Lite has some serious ghosting issues with GBA games)
I was wondering what that was as a game cartridge. But it's just a downloading type of cartridge. So it's not preloaded will games it's like a blank SD card you need a PC to transfer ROM games into.
Sorry to hear that bud. Does the headphone jack still work? There are some ways you can troubleshoot the sound to see what the issue is. The GBA is a fantastic system for sure! Def worth trying to fix. Cheers bud!
Thanks Lee! I'm so glad you liked the video! I'm a real fan of the AGS-101, it's definitely the best GBA for the Nintendo purest, however the IPS kit from FunnyPlaying just makes everything look so dang good! I'd hold onto that 101, it's definitely more of a collectors item! Cheers!
It'd be neat to see an aluminum shell for the GBA SP but in the form factor of of a DMG/Color. Would take away the need to have a complicated hinge or need to fish a thin cable through somewhere.
first time seeing your videos and I gotta say I really like your close ups and detail instructions. I'm a bit bummed because I order this kit from RetroModding and it got canceled due to Covid, I am waiting for them to reopen this kit to the U.S.
I am surprised that aftermarket screen went in easily into the shell. Didn't watch the entire video but I'm guessing the shell is specially modded for that screen? Some shells require a part of the screen housing to be cut off/trimmed to use this IPS screen type.
Thank you Aryan! I actually never bought an AGS-101 due to the high prices. I would check out eBay. Some of the Japanese sellers on eBay have decent prices although it seems like they all went up recently. Hope this helps. Cheers!
can u pls tell me, witch one is the best IPS screen? I saw many videos, where people take different screens. One type of screen is a rectangle like this from FunnyPlaying, but i saw IPS screens that looks like the original screens, like with this corners at the top and bottom of the sreen u know? So what are the diffenences between them? Btw. really nice videos, very professional.
@@MachoNachoProductions thx for your answer :D so there are no differences between the one from "retro game repair shop" and from "FunnyPlaying"? Or are there differences in the number of pixels or the brightness or something like that?
They are largely the same but there are minor differences in terms of color temperature and perhaps some other metrics, but for me they are largely the same.
This is a great video. It helps go through all the steps for beginners. I have a question. When spray painting the shell how does one prevent it from getting into the speaker holes without using tape
Thanks Logic Crash! I’m glad you found it helpful! When spray painting as long as you do light even coats, you don’t need to worry about covering the speaker holes. They will be perfectly fine. Just make sure your coats are very light, not heavy. I hope that helps. Best of luck! Cheers! P.S. Also just to be clear, I would strongly recommend removing the shell from the console prior to painting it and to also use primer.
That's fantastic Matthieu! Did you mod a Game Boy Advance SP, if so what kind of mod? Just curious. Would love to see what it looks like! Cheers buddy!
Hi Ben! I usually get them from an eBay seller named Japan 4 You (J4U). Although it appears they are having issues shipping now a days due to the current environment. I recently had a few items I ordered from them returned to shipper. I am also looking at trying a company called Sendico which allows you to buy things from Japanese websites and then they ship it to you. Hope this helps and best of luck! Cheers!
Great video! I've never soldered anything before but I think this is a perfect one to try with. One question I have is, for the 28 AWG gauge wire, do you have to strip the tip of the wire before soldering it?
Thank you Andres! If I remember correctly the kit came with a wire that was already pre-stripped so you didn't need to do it yourself. My only issue with the wire included was that I thought it was too short and made soldering a little tricky. If you use your own 28 AWG wire you will need to strip it yourself. I hope that answers your question. Best of luck! Cheers!
You probably just need to reseat the shoulder buttons. Sometimes they can come a little loose when you open the shell. They have little spring clips that hold them into place. Careful with them though, they are sharp and hold a lot tension so when you remove them from the clips holding them in place they will snap out and can fly or cut you if your finger is near them. I recommend using a pair of tweezers to grab the spring and slowly release the tension then remove and reseat them.
Hi, looking for some help please! I put a new shell on my SP, and soldered the wire and it all went very well... except the buttons need to be pressed really hard for some reason. I put the original buttons and rubber grommets back and it still happens. Could it be a faulty shell? I cleaned everything numerous times and checked everything I could think of but nothing works..
Hmm that’s really strange. one thing you could check is that the membranes are aligned correctly. Sometimes during reassembly they can shift. If it’s not that it could be a faulty shell. Also you could check to see if the PCB is properly seated in the shell. Other than that I can’t really think of anything else. I hope this helps and that you resolve the issue. Best of luck. Cheers!
Hello, on my C67 it seems that the solder doesn't stick, and it doesn't have that golden thing like in your video, do you know what it could be? Thanks!
I got them both from retro modding. At the moment I don’t think that they are selling the pre trimmed shells. The IPS kit is a FunnyPlaying one. Hope that helps. Cheers!
I really liked the video! But I'd wish for more music. It annoyed me a little bit that you played the same song over and over, and I believe there are great songs for this retro feeling you wanted to represent here. But all in all, great video!
What do you think about replacing an SP AGS 101 screen with an IPS and then using the 101 screen for an OG gameboy advance? Is this a good upgrade path?
I think the biggest advantage would be playing on native original hardware as opposed to emulation. Other than that both are great ways to play GBA games!

Yep! The wire that they included I found was a bit too short. So happy you found the video informative and thank you for the Like! Cheers!
Very nice video! If you don't mind not being able control the brightness, the soldering can be optional.
Thanks, this was very useful :D
Idk if it is just my childhood rose tinted glasses getting in the way, but I swear the my GBA SP used to look as good as this mod does, but when I play on it today, it’s a really washed out and dim image. I will definitely be looking into an IPS display mod for my GBA as it is still the best way to play these games for me (my DS Lite has some serious ghosting issues with GBA games)
Thanks for the video. Very detailed and informative.
You’re most welcome!
I was wondering what that was as a game cartridge. But it's just a downloading type of cartridge.
So it's not preloaded will games it's like a blank SD card you need a PC to transfer ROM games into.
Cool video! what was the name of the space shooter you try at the end? I used to love it but forgot the name :P
It's IRIDION II. Looking for it too ;)
@@charlesdelestre9973 oh right I forgot about it!!! And there was also iridium 3d
Looks time retro modding doesn't sell the pre cut shells anymore :(
Do you know where else I could get a similar quality shell?
Great channel.
Thank you Nick, glad you are enjoying the channel! Cheers!
So if you don't care about being about to adjust the brightness, this is technically a solder-less kit, correct?
The gameboy advance is amazing, unfortunately mine is starting to have sound issues.
Sorry to hear that bud. Does the headphone jack still work? There are some ways you can troubleshoot the sound to see what the issue is. The GBA is a fantastic system for sure! Def worth trying to fix. Cheers bud!
Mine does not have a headphone jack option
I did find a headphone adapter online though. I may have to try it out
great video! i have a first gen ags 101 lcd in my original gba.your sp mod looks much better
Thanks Lee! I'm so glad you liked the video! I'm a real fan of the AGS-101, it's definitely the best GBA for the Nintendo purest, however the IPS kit from FunnyPlaying just makes everything look so dang good! I'd hold onto that 101, it's definitely more of a collectors item! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions ots strange nintendo didnt do a backlit gba from the start
Agreed, would’ve totally made sense to. Perhaps it was a cost savings thing and they were waiting for the front/backlit lcd’s to get cheaper.
Oh this needs an all metal case
Oh man, I wish! Hopefully someday that will happen! Cheers!
Could you imagine an aluminum shell? I'm sure it could be done.
That would be amazing! Let hope we get one some day!
It'd be neat to see an aluminum shell for the GBA SP but in the form factor of of a DMG/Color. Would take away the need to have a complicated hinge or need to fish a thin cable through somewhere.
Totally agree! That would be absolutely amazing! Cheers buddy!
Que Padre 💖 Looks Amazing 🙌🏻 Thanks for the video.
You are very welcome! Glad you liked the video! Cheers buddy!
first time seeing your videos and I gotta say I really like your close ups and detail instructions. I'm a bit bummed because I order this kit from RetroModding and it got canceled due to Covid, I am waiting for them to reopen this kit to the U.S.
Thanks Ronin7477! Glad you like the videos! I'm sorry to hear that dude. Hopefully they will be up and running soon! Cheers!
Is it necessary to solder the cable for the light button? Is there a touch functionality which enables different degrees of light?
I am surprised that aftermarket screen went in easily into the shell. Didn't watch the entire video but I'm guessing the shell is specially modded for that screen? Some shells require a part of the screen housing to be cut off/trimmed to use this IPS screen type.
Yep that’s right! It was a pre-trimmed shell designed for the IPS panel. Makes installation a ton easier! Cheers!
What are some good places to buy AGS 101's? Also great vid, keep up the good work
Thank you Aryan! I actually never bought an AGS-101 due to the high prices. I would check out eBay. Some of the Japanese sellers on eBay have decent prices although it seems like they all went up recently. Hope this helps. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions do you have any for sale I can buy?
I love u Tito, u r the 🐐
can u pls tell me, witch one is the best IPS screen? I saw many videos, where people take different screens. One type of screen is a rectangle like this from FunnyPlaying, but i saw IPS screens that looks like the original screens, like with this corners at the top and bottom of the sreen u know? So what are the diffenences between them? Btw. really nice videos, very professional.
I think they’re all great. I like the ones that retro game repair shop sells.
@@MachoNachoProductions okay thank you very much for your help :D
I wish they kept the original advance form factor and just updated it with a cover on the screen. The SP is for baby hands
I am literally trying to decide wether I should buy another 3ds because both mine broke or if I should buy one of these...
Cheers!
P.S. Also just to be clear, I would strongly recommend removing the shell from the console prior to painting it and to also use primer.
awesome tutorial!
Nice video 👍
Thank you Jarod! Happy that you enjoyed it! Cheers buddy!
Awesome video! You inspired me to make my first mod 🤞
That's fantastic Matthieu! Did you mod a Game Boy Advance SP, if so what kind of mod? Just curious. Would love to see what it looks like! Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions I just received an old SP from ebay and waiting for the parts but I'll share the results ;)
Sounds good dude! Look forward to seeing the final product! Best of luck! Cheers!
Where’s the best place to find GBA consoles in Japan? How do you go about shipping them?
Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thanks for the quick reply and yes that answered my question.
Are the IPS screen dimensions the same as the original? The 4 screen side by side he showed towards the end looks like the output is wider.
Just curious have you ever had an issue with the shoulder buttons acting up? If so how did you repair them?
Cheers!
I really want to reshell but I can’t do that thing with the wire on the ribbon 😞
could you include a link to the shell you used? Love the video!
Im so scared to try this!!! Can i really do this even if im a beginner at all the soldering?
Hello, on my C67 it seems that the solder doesn't stick, and it doesn't have that golden thing like in your video, do you know what it could be? Thanks!
Is your camera just really good or do you edit the colours of this? Haha even your mat looks stunning
Haha, thank you CamoUchiha! I actually do some color-grading after I edit my videos to make the colors more vibrant. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions jts even better if your watching on an AMOLED display
Please provide the link to the screen and the housing that you bought.
I got them both from retro modding. At the moment I don’t think that they are selling the pre trimmed shells. The IPS kit is a FunnyPlaying one. Hope that helps. Cheers!
the system looks great
Thank you reksaiismaiwaifu! So glad you like it! Cheers!
I really liked the video! But I'd wish for more music. It annoyed me a little bit that you played the same song over and over, and I believe there are great songs for this retro feeling you wanted to represent here. But all in all, great video!
Thanks for the feedback Nova! Will definitely be looking to get more musical variety! Cheers buddy and happy holidays!
What do you think about replacing an SP AGS 101 screen with an IPS and then using the 101 screen for an OG gameboy advance? Is this a good upgrade path?
Gave in and started looking for mods but I well not replace the screen.
I made so many mistakes replacing my shell wish I'd seen your vid
Is there any advantage doing this over just playing the GBA games on a jailbroken 3DS?
I think the biggest advantage would be playing on native original hardware as opposed to emulation. Other than that both are great ways to play GBA games!
