Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Tito. I love this Nintendo Switch modification kit. It presents as extremely well thought out and crafted. Thank you for continuing to make what have become my favorite videogame videos Tito! Fred
20:17 Small correction. The SoC is only the CPU and GPU, the RAM is on two separate chips, thermally isolated from the SoC and are not actively cooled.
This makes me really question why Nintendo did not make a switch pro version like you said with better cooling and CPU/GPU speeds. If we as a community can improve their product they must have had some internal debates on why they couldn't get this done. My theory is Nintendo didn't want to compromise the functionality of the switch to make it one-dimensional. However they did make the switch lite haha
The pandemic hit and it threw a wrench in the works. They probably had a design ready to go into production then realized they wouldn't be able to make enough units quickly enough. So they held off on making an actually better switch and released the OLED as their "refresh" since there'd be much lower demand for a switch that just had a better, bigger screen. This allowed them to put more dev time into a next gen switch that will probably have a much better SOC rather than an overclocked original chip.
Nice build, but I just can't see why the switch's original fan has a place there. What is it's purpose? They way it's configured here is to take air from inside the unit and blow it out of the box. Exactly the same as the Noctua fan, so they will be "fighting" to remove the exact same air, which will lead to faster fan degradation and probably a whining fan in just a few months. I guess it's just there since the Switch's OS needs it to function? But why not use the Noctua fan in it's place? Make a breakout PCB that connects to the switches fan connector and reads the signals from the Switch, but deliver more power? (since I guess the Noctua fan uses higher voltages)
the stock fan is simply there as a backup in most cases where you have to use the screen like maintence mode. Typically speaking the noctua keeps systems cool to the point where the stock fan doesnt even kick on.
@@X2Bruteyeah easiest way to control the fan other than the onboard PWM header was with a circuit that detects whether the led indicator is on or not. The fan runs on 12 volts and the motherboard has a 5 volt PWM header that’s rather small. I went with a more straight forward solution.
If there's some room left for a thin and longer aluminium cooler to be put directly on the heatpipe, without disturbing the Noctua fan, you might reduce the temps even further. But tbh, it already works great! Now I'm interested in buying some really cheap Switch for playing at home and my Steam Deck for playing on the go. (Yes, that sounds weird.) Btw., only V1/V2 support, especially V1 is totally fine, because the rather subpar display won't be missed and your don't have to care for the battery life.
This mod only really applies for those who have a hacked console that wishes to run it at max perf and have no problem with discarding the portability but it's a fun idea no mistake!
The vast majority of my customers use stock switches, that were broken as for parts off ebay. Thats how it started. I used to do large scale switch repairs and ran across the occasional consle that could dock but had a dead screen or dead screen driver. The cooling is unintended side effect of needing something to compensate for the more open design of the shell. I upped the size for ease of install and went with the largest noctua that could fit. Mainly because they last long and are quiet.
@@SetEngineering Quite unexpected! I would have think that ppl would just dock the switch and play it this way if it's only a dead screen. Thanks for the answer!
@@MoTheBlackCat There is a niche of people who want that interesting conversation piece mod project. Its different and because of that always attracts a certain subset of fans.
This is a seriously awesome design. One thing to think about is that the ribbon of the SD card extender sitting on the heat pipe is probably not great. Those ribbons are technically rated for more heat than the Switch hardware can make safely anyway, but my spidy sense are shreaking at it. I'm probably over-reacting. A fantastic design nonetheless.
If the switch can run like this with better cooling and all, I have high hopes for what the actual follow up console will be able to do. I really hope they’re only waiting longer on it to release something that’ll really last a while and be able to handle pretty modern titles without the huge sacrifices and cuts and edits needed for most switch ports.
It will never keep up with other consoles/PC. It's too much hardware to fit into such a small footprint. Look at the size of a PS5. Now try and squeeze what that hardware can do in something the size of an 8" tablet. There will always be sacrifices and cuts. You sacrifice hardware for portability. The switch 2 will definitely be an improvement though, and since it will play switch games, my guess is any badly performing ports/games will get an performance boost using the new hardware.
@@xMaGuSx888 I’m not saying it should run the newest games lol but something like Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 1 ported to switch and neutered in a lot of ways especially graphics is not the move imo. I’d rather they wait and drop those on the next system with full support and getting 60fps consistently with 1080p. Most modern consoles are also doing 4k and I think the switch is better off really doing 1080p well before worrying about supporting 4k
The switch was designed to run super stable under all conditions in a portable unit that’d get thrown between couch cushions by kids for hours while running stuff like TOTK, so it had to be this robust from the start. My modded v1 switch runs totally fine at the ‘full tilt’ clocks Nacho showed, even when not docked… and for reference most standard laptop/PC hardware runs stable up to 90C+… so even that 61C Nacho got from the tests with the stock shell wasn’t bad at all.
You said the screen isn't really meant to be used in handheld mode here but honestly, 3D print a fitting stand and this case mod would still work fine in tabletop mode.
For the later years, when the console will be more retro, this could be interesting. Playing on original hardware and have a better cooling. Jailbreaking will not be an issue anymore, because Nintendo has likely already turned of everything, as they always do 😞. For now I keep my systems stock, even when my first Switch from 2017 is jailbreakable within seconds.
As long as he’s not discussing pirating anything or playing non-cartridge games (which he very clearly shows in the thumbnail) I don’t think it’ll be an issue.
Another vote for some kind of battery board to eliminate the internal battery. Also maybe an optional (External, but covered) toggle switch for V1 switches to allow flashing without needing a jig. I have a V1 switch that I've not flashed yet (waiting on Switch 2) and this case has me really close to pulling the trigger.
I know this will sound odd but I think there ought to be a way to attach the rails to this kit so you can dock/charge the joycons with it. yes I know in a situation like this you will mostly use a pro controller of some sort but I dunno using joycons for some games is still a thing and not needing an extra accessory to charge them would be nice.
No you can't, it's possible to bypass it on a modded switch but isn't easy. I had to do it once on a faulty switch I was fixing up with one of its issues being a faulty rail. Not sure why nintendo thought that was a good idea, but apparently they did
Crazy the lengths fans have to go because Nintendo kept refusing to make a properly performing console. Fingers crossed that the successor isn't outdated on arrival like the Switch was.
I found funny that Nintendo Switch modding community gave us handheld less version of Switch while Nintendo Wii modding community gave us handheld version of Wii
61C in stock shell is not bad wow i thought it was gonna be 75C or higher so this no big worry besides warmer case with the hands on it. Amazing overclocking with temps in the new shell
1:43 "makes you winder why nintendo never released a version of the switch like this" fun fact! there was a tv only unit in development, codenamed calcio. im pretty sure michael scires (well known nintendo modder) has said that its most likely never going into production.
The switches concept came from the Wii U game pad 😂 Nintendo wasn’t willing to make another home console after both the GameCube & Wii U struggled to make sales exceptions.
Not sure you can call it a "Pro" model just because of a case with better cooling. These results are still possible on a regular jailbroken handheld model with some fan adjustments.
What I never understood, or think was a missed chance, for the Switch is that they didn't made the dock with an integrated eGPU. Even with a passively cooled Low-End GPU, like a GT1030 at the time when the Switch was released, could have way better performance when in docked mode.
Very cool mod! I haven't had a console in ages, but this is super nice. It is odd that Nintendo never produced a TV only Switch, though even if they did I doubt they would have increased performance that much.
totally irrelevant to the product which is AWESOME, but I love the music choice for the initial case disassembly. Has a VERY similar feel to the Charlie Brown Christmas music. Appropriate for this time of year I'd say... great vid as always.
Even with these frequencies you don't get consistent and stable 60 fps in most games, at least in a more demanding dock mode. This cooling setup is nice, but there's nothing wrong overclocking a switch and run it above 60 degrees, nothing's going to happen to it. Only cases I know are when v1 (erista) shuts itself down on above 70 degrees due to built in safety protection, and it still works just fine afterwards. V2, lite, and Oled - good luck overheating those guys. I've never seen above 66 degrees on my v2 with slightly higher clocks than shown in the vid, and I think it was in No Man's Sky, which still runs pretty crappy despite the switch being overclocked. It's usually just not worth it, as it doesn't give you a needed edge. It feels like the wonderous "60 fps" are within reach, but it's always not enough, you get them in some places in a game, then in other places you get 35-40-50. I think Nintendo is well aware of what nvidia chip in the switch is capable of, and even nintendo being greedy af didn't have an audacity to make a pro version of switch with just overclocking a v2 model. It's not nearly enough pro to be a pro.
The price does seem really nice. I do wish there was a version with printable files along side the custom pcb, screws and inserts needed. So we can do our own wacky color combinations. I would 100% pickup one of these if that was an option. I would even still pay the same price as it is now. But I can understand why that might not be an option. a lot of time, effort, and love went into this project, and giving out the print files would make a underground type resell market for the shells, but without the pcbs and such. I might still pick one up though.
First I wanna say that I love the mod and I think it's great. But wouldn't the temps be better if you blew down on the cpu/gpu fan? (Reverse the Noctua fan) Now the switch fan and the Noctua fan are fighting for the air that comes in. Cons with this mod: It's bulkier and not as easy to use as a handheld. You can't connect or charge the controllers directly on the consol anymore.
I looked up the price before you mentioned it and kinda went, "whoa". But after thinking about it I agree with you. All the work, plus you didn't even mention that it also includes a Noctua fan that's like $20 alone.
I'd suggest you call it "Pro Mod for Nintendo Switch" instead, to give Nintendo less to go after you for. It makes it clear it's a third party accessory.
I like how he didn't show any CFW since thats only way to overclock. Installed the switch was completely factory I guess thats to prevent ninja from blocking the video.
I do still enjoy my v1 I purchased last year… but as you say, there are some downsides- No access to the SD card, loss of USB port, and that blasted fan ALWAYS running. I’d like to request a v2 upgrade kit- PCB, Noctua fan, and SD extender for $60 including a non-commercial personal license to print a replacement case kit. I have two printers and plenty of inserts and screws :)
Short answer: No. Long answer: Having a Switch pro would mean developers would not optimize the games well enough. Lots of people assumed the switch pro would've used a chip called the "T239" which is one of the numbers for Nvidias Tegra Orin, and the rumors said the thing would be a desktop console with the full unlocked SOC excluding the CPU cores being 8 instead of 12 and supposedly would've been capable of 4K having 16GBs of system memory clocked at a relatively high speed. But we never got any confirmation Then rumors changes again and again, giving us nothing absolutely concrete about this systems details at all, besides the SOC and "guess work" about the thing being a handheld. Either way, previous rumors about the thing being a switch pro assumed we'd still have the base switch at a possibly lower price, which considering how poorly developers optimized their games for the Xbox Series S (lots of them went down to 480p 60fps or 720p 30fps) the ecosystem would've looked bleak, since they wouldn't care. So they most likely never gave us a pro model due to this.

One of the best mods I ever seen in this channel! Didn't know people were overclocking their switches, maybe this give me a reason to finally pick one, even if it's used, since this case gives a "new" condition to the console.
I can't believe it, we finally got our first look at the switch 2.
I'm curious to see how this compares to Switch 2 backwards compatibility. I like the idea of this for people with a broken screen. It'd be nice if Set made one for Switch Lite with some magic video out option.
There is a hdmi mod for the switch lite that may make that a possibility real soon.
@@SetEngineeringfinally!!! I'm so happy to hear this.
This shell's assembly reminds me of the old Acorn Archimedes. It uses Slices to make its internals a layer cake of parts like this kit.
We've now reached the point where RUclipsrs are sponsoring other RUclipsrs. RUclips has truly reached its final form.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Tito. I love this Nintendo Switch modification kit. It presents as extremely well thought out and crafted. It is clear as day how much increased airflow the SOC will receive with that huge 120 millimeter Noctua cooling fan. Moving forward through my thoughts, I have come to the realization that your videogame console tutorial videos are honestly some of the best I have watched, and in my unsolicited opinion, are also among the most precise and detailed videos on RUclips. Additionally Tito, your video's production value has risen to the level of outstanding sir. I genuinely enjoy all of your RUclips videos from start to finish. You always have great lighting, with near-perfect framing, and crisp focus, on every shot. Finally, your choice of mellow, smooth jazz is also super enjoyable for me. So I really just wanted to just take out a little bit of time to compose this personal feedback for you because in my opinion, you are "The Gold Standard" on RUclips for video game console modifications, restorations, how-to, with a nice sprinkle of ASMR, just like the cherry on top of the whipped cream on an ice cream sundae. Thank you for continuing to make what have become my favorite videogame videos Tito! Fred
Very cool revision of this shell. I love the craftsmanship
LTT being a sponsor actually blew my mind for a sec. Did a legit double-take, as I wasn't looking at the screen when those words were said.
@@bruwinIt better have a brand new SOC being a next generation console. No one wants a Wii situation again with it being an over clocked GameCube.
As for the heatsink, once i have the time I would like to investigate a custom solution _but_ that can be costly.
Yeah I was thinking shouldn't the noctua be reversed so they aren't fighting each other?
@@SetEngineeringI had a feeling that was why. the noctua fan is based controlled by the dock led right?
(Yes, that sounds weird.)
Btw., only V1/V2 support, especially V1 is totally fine, because the rather subpar display won't be missed and your don't have to care for the battery life.
I have recently preorder mine and waiting patiently for it. Macho ty for showing both the v1 and v2 videos mod. nice jazz.
Would have been cool to see joycon rails on the system
@@SetEngineering Indeed it's not always about what it can do but simply how cool it is!
I've always wanted a dock that 0verrode the switches internal GPU,CPU, and RAM for ones in the dock and a hardwired ethernet connect.
LTT gave you a shoutout in the WAN show and I came here to check you out because of it. Now I’m subscribed!
That's definitely a great price for all of what's printed and the inserts as you mentioned.
5:25 oh no i appreciate the visual assembly. Id watch stuff like this all day.
This really is a good contender if you have a cosmetically damaged or broken console.
I agree with you on the price. The only way to make it cheaper would to mass produce them in a factory .
That is pretty incredible. I'd like one with an NES motif, right down to the classic fonts in red.
Nintendo
SWITCH CONSOLE SYSTEM
I think they’re also trying to get patches going for a lot of games Day 1.
True, hopefully they pull off something better than the PS5 PRO.
My modded v1 switch runs totally fine at the ‘full tilt’ clocks Nacho showed, even when not docked… and for reference most standard laptop/PC hardware runs stable up to 90C+… so even that 61C Nacho got from the tests with the stock shell wasn’t bad at all.
now can u use it with a broken switch like no battery no screen no fan just salvaging the motherboard that would be a deal of the century
That's it! *Unswitches your Switch*
Amazing mod! And I really like LTT sponsoring here, too. Noice! 😆
15:18 i would recommend attaching the fan control board to the dock board prior to installing to avoid the awkward tilt in
You said the screen isn't really meant to be used in handheld mode here but honestly, 3D print a fitting stand and this case mod would still work fine in tabletop mode.
I'm also wondering if Nintendo's next console will make this obsolete since it's going to be backwards compatible.
Ltt sponsorship. Welcome to the big time Tito🎉
Switch Pro would’ve been a successful money grab, but maybe Nintendo didn’t wanna piss off some of its loyalists
2:41 blow on that thang
Tito. Be prepared for if this video gets taken down because of Nintendo.
It's basically a 3d printed case. They have nothing to cry about. Fuck nintendo.
As long as he’s not discussing pirating anything or playing non-cartridge games (which he very clearly shows in the thumbnail) I don’t think it’ll be an issue.
Last I checked they've never once went after console modding channels and have no reason to. Y'all need to calm down.
Its not like he's emulating anything, its nintendo hardware just in a different form
Macho Nacho his switch main board doesn't even show a modchip installed so he will be fine.
Now this is something to keep in mind when/if need something like this!
A really cool feature would be a screw removal count with arrows.
Tbh, 60 degrees for an ARM SoC is perfectly normal. It should throttle at 80s and should not be harmful at all, longevity wise (at 60s)
I've got a con, if you reset the switch you can't pair joycons because they need to dock to the system
you can’t just sync them in the controller menu?
No, it requires them to be docked during setup
@@aethersx2-samsunggalaxys206 i bet you could use a wireless controller for setup, and then pair the joycons after
No you can't, it's possible to bypass it on a modded switch but isn't easy. I had to do it once on a faulty switch I was fixing up with one of its issues being a faulty rail. Not sure why nintendo thought that was a good idea, but apparently they did
@@aethersx2-samsunggalaxys206 ah ok, thank you for explaining lol
Awesome project. Would like to see a shell that uses the OLED board as it can overclock higher, especially the memory
I think the Switch V2 and OLED use the same chipset and memory.
It'd be interesting to combine this with the 8GB memory mod
Crazy the lengths fans have to go because Nintendo kept refusing to make a properly performing console. Fingers crossed that the successor isn't outdated on arrival like the Switch was.
I'm so happy LLT sponsored this video! Love your videos and love that screwdriver set. Now just waiting for you to get on floatplane for some bts!
Genuinely an incredible mod. This video was an awesome showcase of what fans have been working on and you've definitely convinced me to buy one.
1:43 "makes you winder why nintendo never released a version of the switch like this"
fun fact! there was a tv only unit in development, codenamed calcio.
im pretty sure michael scires (well known nintendo modder) has said that its most likely never going into production.
The switches concept came from the Wii U game pad 😂 Nintendo wasn’t willing to make another home console after both the GameCube & Wii U struggled to make sales exceptions.
I think you're forgetting something in-between lmao @@jordanrayo2425

At about the 24min mark; “This is a FANtastic…” pun intended lol
Could you show temperatures in °C as well in the future?
Not sure you can call it a "Pro" model just because of a case with better cooling. These results are still possible on a regular jailbroken handheld model with some fan adjustments.
Yooooo now that's a nice screwdriver

@@ErikFromCanada No, they will auction custom GPU water blocks ;)
What I never understood, or think was a missed chance, for the Switch is that they didn't made the dock with an integrated eGPU. Even with a passively cooled Low-End GPU, like a GT1030 at the time when the Switch was released, could have way better performance when in docked mode.
would have been funnier if it was called the Switch Box lol
$110 for this kit is a steal. Definitely want one in the future.
Ur intro is so good, I never skip it
What’s funny about this mod, is it’ll probably be better than the actual pro switch if it ever comes out.
Very cool mod! I haven't had a console in ages, but this is super nice. It is odd that Nintendo never produced a TV only Switch, though even if they did I doubt they would have increased performance that much.
My goodness, I love how detailed and thoughtful your walk through is. Thank you!
totally irrelevant to the product which is AWESOME, but I love the music choice for the initial case disassembly.
It's not nearly enough pro to be a pro.
bro.. ltt needs to showcase their screwdriver instead of just saying "get it at the ltt store"... lol. i never knew it was that cool!
*now Nintendo is gonna see this and feel so envious to copyright strike it*
The price does seem really nice.
(Reverse the Noctua fan)
Now the switch fan and the Noctua fan are fighting for the air that comes in.
Cons with this mod:
It's bulkier and not as easy to use as a handheld.
You can't connect or charge the controllers directly on the consol anymore.
I looked up the price before you mentioned it and kinda went, "whoa". But after thinking about it I agree with you. All the work, plus you didn't even mention that it also includes a Noctua fan that's like $20 alone.
Not even going to pass on this mod. My V2 Switch will live forever !!!
Perfect amount of thermal paste, Steve would be proud!
I'd suggest you call it "Pro Mod for Nintendo Switch" instead, to give Nintendo less to go after you for.
It makes it clear it's a third party accessory.
MAN NINTENDO GONNA COPY THAT WHEN THEY RELEASE A BUDGET ONE SWITCH.
This guy kinda sounds like Benson from Regular show in a way...🤔
I never thought about that but now i kinda hear it
not angry enough for that
Nah, if anything he sounds more like NileRed, that science channel
I love Nintendo so much, hope all the gaming companies step it up soon before gaming dies again
73 DEGREES ROOM TEMP. Damn boy, you sweaty.
What a time to be ALIVE as a gamer!
You had me excited for a minute that LTT Store had restocked on their precision bit set... sadly still sold out, and has been for months.
But we never got any confirmation
Then rumors changes again and again, giving us nothing absolutely concrete about this systems details at all, besides the SOC and "guess work" about the thing being a handheld.
