Heads up anyone that’s replacing their shell. Use the power switch thats included with the new shell as the original won’t fit in most reproduction shells.
This is so cool. I've been needing to reshell an old AGS-100 and replace the screen on an AGS-101. The replacement parts have been sitting in my Amazon wishlist for over a year. Your screen is cheaper than the 101 screens I've found, your lighting effects are so cool! and you show us how to install it on top of it. I'm very glad this popped up in my feed.
This was absolutely helpful, thank you! Especially with the little hinge trick, during reassembly. 50 year-old asswipe and this totally helped my first reshell!
50 year old asswipe... damn I can't even begin to imagine how hard n crusty an ass that's been waiting 50 years to be wiped would be like... butt it sounds like a real doozy! You are a real one handling business no matter how long an ass has been waiting for its wipe!!
I wanted to upgrade my sp 001 so bad and you made this video so straight forward and easy I went ahead and purchased the screen as well a Pokémon entei reshell from the link above thank you !!🙏
Thank you SO much. I just had to take apart my SP twice because it wasn't opening properly after I followed the shell manufacturer's guide. Your method for reinserting the hinges saved me from a big headache
Your video is awesome. This was my first time doing this and I even did the soldering part though I've never soldered anything. I've bought an old GBA SP NES edition a few years back with a burnt screen for $1USD xD and now is in pristine condition thanks to your video!
I was reshelling my SP, while this played in the background and got startled when you turned yours on to test the power because I thought I'd somehow turned mine on without flipping the switch. XD
Thank you so much. Each other resell video takes apart the whole top shell part but I just needed to replace the part of the shell that has the holes for the buttons since I have an OEM SpongeBob shell and I don’t want to take out the rubber screw covers. Thanks!
Great instructional video! I appreciate how clear it is! Nearly done re-shelling haha Question, I tested the batteries and they work. However, once I start screwing everything together, the battery is not connecting. What should I check??
Either the battery contacts are not touching anymore somehow (possibly turned the wrong way?), or something on the motherboard broke while trying to reshell are my first two assumptions
If it's the original battery, there is a chance that after years of use, its shape has slightly altered, thus doesn't make proper contact. This is what stopped my og SP from turning on. I temporarily solved this by adding a little piece of thin plastic to push the battery form the other side towards the console's contact points and now it's working. The best option though would be to replace the battery with a new one, especially if the old has formed a noticeable bulge. In that case, get rid of the old battery IMMEDIATELY.
I want to do this so bad as I opted out to just purchase a pre-built gba with an ips screen but I have 0 experience in pulling a part retro handhelds and 0 experience in soldering lol
So I reckon the hinge will pop out like described above in most consoles, but it looks like the one I inherited had had some damage to the paint and someone may have tried to paint over this area? There was paint inside my hinge and the whole thing was going absolutely nowhere when I used my supplied mini screwdriver to remove it. So I applied a little more force and finally it blasted through - RIGHT THROUGH MY FINGER! OUCH.
My game boy took me 2.5 hrs to take apart change shell and put back together 😅, old stripped screws and 20 yr old rubber (the pads) dont come out very easy
I put my first custom sp together this week. The shell wasnt the flame red i was looking for which isnt too big a deal, but i couldnt get the hinges in and aligned whatsoever. I forced them in with a pair of pliers but cant align them no matter what. My solution is im just gonna buy a legit flame red sp n use the shell for my custom sp instead of the wine red china shell
Hey, Iwas just wondering where you buy these scratched up consoles and how much you pay on average per each. I am thinking about re-shelling one myself but i dont know where to start looking so any advice would help me alot!
Sooo im having trouble unscrewing the back tri-wing screws with the screwdriver off amazon. I don't know if my screws are ungodly tight or my tri-wing screwdriver just sucks, but does anyone have any other screw recommendations? This screwdriver was literally stripping my screws after a couple of attempts and I really just want to reshell my Gameboy advance SP. What are the dimensions of the screws? So I can get a different screwdriver
Sometimes the screwdrivers from some suppliers are just a fraction too small. I got mine from a supplier who specializes in game customizing/repair. You might also look into an actual mini screwdriver set with changeable bits that has a triwing bit. They tend to be a little sturdier, and some sets come with different sizes. If you manage to get the screws out, I'd see about getting replacements so you don't have to go through this again.
I have a question, what’s the quality on a lot of these cheap re shells, do they feel similar to the proper thing or can you tell straight away? I’ve got a cheap sp off eBay in rough condition but I want it looking nice and feeling very similar if possible, cheers.
What would the battery life be if we use the IPS screen vs a AGS-101 screen? Assuming you use an original battery. I’ve seen that using the IPS makes it so it only last about 2 hours which isn’t ideal at all :(
Sorry for hanging out in your left ear 🥴

This is incorrect! I do stuff like this as a living use the new one ☝️

I must have been lucky then as installed an extreme rate shell with some random buttons off AliExpress and worked fine 🤷

Great stuff, especially that pesky screw hiding under the ribbon!
Great video brother. Been following your channel for a while. I needed this tutorial as I'm about to reshell my Game Boy Advance SP
My oem hinges did not have a black and white side. But the first try over which side to use worked. Thanks again!
Thanks for this. Straightforward, no-nonsense. Perfect. ❤
So fascinating 👏!😊😀
going to use this guide to reshell my anbernic sp device, thank you!
I've never tried the Ambernic SP, but it probably won't be exactly like this vid, but good luck!
@@vetrogaming i found a teardown video on the anbernic sp, i highly reccomend checking it out, an amazing handheld with the sps formfactor!!!

If youre not keeping the old shell then just get a flat head down the side of where the two shells meet at the hinge and it levers right out.

Any recommendations where to buy shells from ?

So did I amount a month ago and but am now on my 4 handheld reshell. It is surprisingly easy and especially with the new screen it is worth it.

Would the 101 screen even work is it is not soldered to the motherboard?
Is Ags-101 and 001 different motherboards and system..?

how can you test your screen before installing?
my hinges are the same color, is there another way to tell??
Can you sell custom GBA sp? Instead of the regular GBA from your website?

i lost that little red wire any idea of were to get another?

Most respells won’t be as good of quality as the originals with very few exceptions
If I use the new screen then do I HAVE to solder the screen
Nope! You’d just have to use the touch sensor for brightness and color modes instead of the brightness button
What kind of wire are you using?
It comes with the kit, but it's something super thin like 30 AWG
I have a question if I’m doing this but keeping the original screen do I have to solder
Nope!
You said c7 but pointed to c67. I assume thats what you meant.
