@@thebutcher1412 the gameplay definitely holds up, but as an 80's kid, really good pixel graphics (like GBA) will always look better to me than the early 3D stuff (n64, some ds/gamecube/wii games).

GBA represented a golden age of 2D side scrolling games at a time when people were moving towards 3D. It was quite bold of Nintendo to continue making games of this kind. And thank goodness they did. Great collection of games. I'd also include Astro boy somewhere on that list. Quite underrated IMO.
Astro Boy is absolutely one of the best GBA games. I randomly found it at a Sam's Club as a kid when my dad was getting his tires changed and I played it the entire way on our trip to Mexico that summer. Dear childhood memories.

I grew up pretty poor and was lucky to get a GBA close to launch on my Birthday. From there on out, us GBA players got kind of spoiled because of how many great games came out on the GBA it was like month after month, hit after hit waiting for the new game to come out, talking on the playground about , like I remember conversations going like, Dude I can't wait for 4 swords to come out. You have to get it!
@@AaronKaiMCDNLD yeah, you can still play it in english though, since there is a fan translation. In fact, you could play that fan translation on a gba if you have a flash cart
It is also worth mentioning that _Mario Kart: Super Circuit_ includes all the tracks from the original _Super Mario Kart_ in addition to five cups of new courses (as opposed to most Mario Kart games' four).
That and runescape were the games of my childhood also my brothers and all the neighbors neighbors dedicated games of choice too. The fun of the grind was surreal
Emerald was good, but after Pokemon Crystal offering so much on a very old console, people had the feeling that Hoen generation didn't use the console to it's maximun as did Crystal.
Cala Content I agree with that. after being able to go between jhoto and kanto in gen 2, gen 3 was a big let down for me even though emerald is my favorite pokemon game to date. They could have done so much with gen 3.
There's way more to do on Emerald than on Crystal! In fact, the late game was almost impossible to finish. Best Pokémon edition if you are more into the competitive possibilities of the mechanics, as IMO the battle frontier was the only real challenging + amusing event in all sagas.
The only thing I would add is EarthBound Trilogy. It was only relased in Japan, but it's available on WiiU VC in English, and hackers also created English GBA cardridges.
"Yes I know this is an oddball choice".. Because God forbid you don't list the exact same games that appear on every single Top GBA games list out there!
I feel like almost everyone is sleeping on the medabots RPG series. Those were definetely some of my favorite GBA games when I was young and I would argue that they could give pokemon a run for their money but it's nowhere near as popular. Rokusho > Metabee btw.
This handheld had a certain game that was an absolute blast, but unfortunately never left Japan. Maybe one day, though, the game will be localized. Maybe one day, they'll localize Rhythm Tengoku.
I replayed Fusion and Zero Mission just a couple of months back and Zero is the much shorter game and only has 2 main bosses. I wasn't too keen on the hand holding of Fusion when it first came out but its aged so well and the boss battles are fantastic (nowhere near as hard as Dread though lol).
For those like me who’s first and only love was the Super Nintendo the GBA was a beautiful gift from Nintendo as those games got re-released or they got sequels.
I'll just share some of the games I've played to death...in no particular order: 1. Zoids Legacy (Zoids Saga 2) 2. Gundam Seed Battle Assault 3. Super Mario Advance 2 Super Mario World 4. Medabots 5. Duel Masters Kaijudo Showdown
For some reason everybody only seems to add Zero 1 when it comes to these GBA lists, I don't know why, guess the other games didn't sell as well for people to know how much of an improvement Z2-Z4 are from Z1, or maybe they just didn't care enough?
If anyone sees this and likes Punch Out, I'd also recommend Wade Hixton's Counter Punch. It has core gameplay similar to Punch Out, has great graphics by GBA standards, and has quite a few twists on the formula outside the fighting. To start, there's an overworld map in place of the linear circuits from Punch Out, allowing you to take out any opponent in any order. This also directly affects the gameplay by allowing you to pull some of the unfair stuff that your opponents in Punch Out pull. You can do things like pay the referee to count slower when you're knocked down and use money to learn incredibly powerful special attacks, effectively flipping your underdog status on it's head (if you so choose). The game also has a story that (although minor) gives some fun context to your fights and highlights some of the characters. They aren't all designed like the traditional Punch Out boxers: they're even more over the top, if you can even believe that. You can also get fighter specific challenges that double your earned cash if you pass them, but they're quite the doozy. While the game isn't perfect (the fights can get a little redundant, the game is pretty short, and the difficulty can vary wildly if you so choose) I highly recommend it. While I wouldn't put it alongside the all time best game GBA games, it's certainly one of my favorites.
Custom Robo GX is criminally underrated. I guess that's expected when it's a Japanese only game. Honestly, it's one of the most fun GBA games with lots of replayability.
Man what a system this is! Some of the best 2D games of all time, all on one single portable system! Seriously, the GBA game library is an absolute treasure trove of AAA titles!
No mention of the MegaMan battle network series?! Blasphemy! Sonic battle was pretty great too. And I don't understand how that Street fighter got chosen over Tekken advance
I was really sad to not see the megaman battle network on here...any of them! We fans argue about which one is better until the cow comes home, but we all agree they are some of the best GBA games out there (at least anyone that I talked to that has ever played one.)
Micah Vincent I agree, and fire emblem should be higher. Top 5 should be (at random) fire emblem/Pokemon emerald/megaman battle network 3 Blue/Metroid/golden sun
Battle Network 3 and 2 are generally considered the best in the series and I definitely think one of them should have made this list. I also think Fire Emblem was placed far too low.
Warioland 4 is amazing. I have all of the Warioland games. Picked up a used copy years ago for $3 and was amazed. Got the rest of them soon after. It’s an amazing game with great controls
Oh yeah, it was a Konami game huh? ...I miss those games, wished they make a new game for the 3DS. It might not be able to do the whole UV sensor thing, but they could use the camera instead. (they can figure something out to prevent cheating. xD)
That time of Pokemon games are simply awesome! i love what they're doing with breeding, iv's and whatnot nowadays, I think it got over the top though. Back then still had egg moves, and natures without it being crazy breeding 20 pokemon for the perfect one lol. Quarantine has been great, I beat dark souls, almost beat Sakiro, beat crystal version, now on to fire red :)

Rayman Advance is up there for me. I picked that up recently for 5 quid boxed. I was shocked to see how good it looks, really didn’t think the GBA was capable of making an (at the time) relatively modern console port play so well. Definitely get this if you played the original Rayman. The soundtrack has been dulled down abit, but then it would have to be coming out of that tiny speaker! 😂

From there on out, us GBA players got kind of spoiled because of how many great games came out on the GBA it was like month after month, hit after hit waiting for the new game to come out, talking on the playground about , like I remember conversations going like, Dude I can't wait for 4 swords to come out. You have to get it!
1. Every castlevania on the gba
Especially Aria of Sorrow, which starred me 😃
Soma Cruz and me (Arikado) :P
Yeah ^^
My personal favorite is Circle of the Moon. But yeah, they're all great.
kdkseven Same. The DSS gave you so much freedom and being able to use any card via the DSS glitch made it really fun too.
No love for Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town?
THIS!!! unacceptable that he missed this

Mother 3 isn't officially released on the states?
@@AaronKaiMCDNLD yeah, you can still play it in english though, since there is a fan translation. In fact, you could play that fan translation on a gba if you have a flash cart
All it needed was Mother 3 and the list would’ve been complete
Golden sun is the best. Even better than the final fantasy series, but i like them both.
Fight me, right now
5. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
4. FF6 Advance
3. Metroid Fusion
2. Pokémon Emerald
1. Zelda MC
I’m sad that Megaman Battle Network wasn’t here, such a great series 😭
You slow
It is also worth mentioning that _Mario Kart: Super Circuit_ includes all the tracks from the original _Super Mario Kart_ in addition to five cups of new courses (as opposed to most Mario Kart games' four).
Additionally, Pokemon FireRed has always been used by fan developers to create the great rom hacks like Dark Rising, Light Platinum, etc.
That and runescape were the games of my childhood also my brothers and all the neighbors neighbors dedicated games of choice too. The fun of the grind was surreal
Why not say that Kirby and the Amazing Mirror isn't only the best Kirby game, but it's also a multiplayer masterpiece?
Holy shit. I forgot that game was on the GBA. I need to get that one.
Gamer joined the chat why don’t you just download all the roms instead
+ it added some Metroidvania vibes, and the sprites were gorgeous, especially the backgrounds

I really love how pretty some GBA games are. They have enough pixels and they're colorful enough to stand up to or outdo some modern pixel art games.
Yeah absolutely. What were some of your favs on the GBA for pixel visuals?
What about Pokemon Emerald?
Pokemon emerald is great

6:39 "Just as with Mario Golf this is an extremely solid tennis game"
The only thing I would add is EarthBound Trilogy. It was only relased in Japan, but it's available on WiiU VC in English, and hackers also created English GBA cardridges.
I've never seen a English hack of Mother 1+2 for the GBA
"Yes I know this is an oddball choice".. Because God forbid you don't list the exact same games that appear on every single Top GBA games list out there!
Retro Zen what
That's because only nerds are involved here. No sports games or anything that you could really do. Just fantasy games.
Robieto who says you can't man a drill mech and break down buildings

I feel like almost everyone is sleeping on the medabots RPG series. Those were definetely some of my favorite GBA games when I was young and I would argue that they could give pokemon a run for their money but it's nowhere near as popular.
Rokusho > Metabee btw.
THANK YOU for putting Golden Sun in the top 5! That series deserves so much more love and attention
This handheld had a certain game that was an absolute blast, but unfortunately never left Japan.
Maybe one day, though, the game will be localized.
Maybe one day, they'll localize Rhythm Tengoku.
honestly this is an amazing comment
Deemolisher The Great I didn't think anybody would notice at this point!
I was on vacation in Japan when it came out and bought it on a whim. Needless to say, it was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
Abner Anaya Sometimes I wish I lived in Japan.
Oh heck yeah! That game is dope!
After playing through Fusion and Dread I found them both very similar. Although Dreads final boss was definitely harder I'll give ya that.
THE VIDEO STARTED WITH GOLDEN SUN MUSIC I AM IN TEARS!
GOD DAMN IT, IT EVEN ENDED WITH GOLDEN SUN MUSIC!!!!
I’m a simple man, I see Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, I’m gonna hit that like button
TLoZ Minish Cap looks incredible. These are graphics I'd expect from the DS. Thanks for sharing.
Dragon ball z buus fury, maybe only if you like dragon ball, but what an awesome game.
Supersonic Warriors was also amazing. Easily the best DBZ fighting game at the time of its release.
"Ruby and Sapphire are _clearly_ superior." I personally think Emerald is superior to both...
Ironically , i used absol in pokémon emerald , it's a good pokemon
YEAH
For those like me who’s first and only love was the Super Nintendo the GBA was a beautiful gift from Nintendo as those games got re-released or they got sequels.
What no love for the Mega Man Battle Network games NintendoLife?!
Man, Golden Sun's music is so good
I still need to play it tho
Just like any other diehard, I'm gonna say it right here, right now:
GIVE US MOTHER 3
Camelot found its way onto so many entries in this list. Seriously though, Golden Sun is SO amazing!
I'll just share some of the games I've played to death...in no particular order:
1. Zoids Legacy (Zoids Saga 2)
2. Gundam Seed Battle Assault
3. Super Mario Advance 2 Super Mario World
4. Medabots

AND slashing! but It's the first level, before the sword was acquired.
I’m even more confused on why he put Z1 instead of Z3
@@amso7169 Z3 is where its at
Zero 1 is pretty good but 2-4 are the ones that deserve to be on this list, even if it was only one game per series.
Must include
Harvest moon friends of meneral town and kingdom hearts chain of memories
Ikr, I was annoyed when Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories wasn't included, seriously they managed to fit in actual FMV cutscenes in it
Forgot about friends on mineral town. It has aged super poorly though, but that was a great title on the gba.
@@davemeech still the best though... and why are we here?

Vortex Traveller. have to agree with you there. amazing game.
Loved Astro boy and how complex the story was for a gba game
Its top 3 at least.
Custom Robo GX is criminally underrated. I guess that's expected when it's a Japanese only game. Honestly, it's one of the most fun GBA games with lots of replayability.

I was really sad to not see the megaman battle network on here...any of them! We fans argue about which one is better until the cow comes home, but we all agree they are some of the best GBA games out there (at least anyone that I talked to that has ever played one.)
Micah Vincent AND KINGDOM HEARTS CHAIN OF MEMORIES?!?!
I hate mega man battle network with a passion
Micah Vincent I agree, and fire emblem should be higher. Top 5 should be (at random) fire emblem/Pokemon emerald/megaman battle network 3 Blue/Metroid/golden sun
Battle Network 3 and 2 are generally considered the best in the series and I definitely think one of them should have made this list.
I also think Fire Emblem was placed far too low.
Warioland 4 is amazing. I have all of the Warioland games. Picked up a used copy years ago for $3 and was amazed. Got the rest of them soon after. It’s an amazing game with great controls
Oh yeah, a personal favorite of mine that was overlooked by almost every gBA owner out there...
Boktai.
YES OMG. I didn't know till recently it was made by Hideo Kojima!
Oh yeah, it was a Konami game huh?
...I miss those games, wished they make a new game for the 3DS. It might not be able to do the whole UV sensor thing, but they could use the camera instead. (they can figure something out to prevent cheating. xD)
It's always good to see another Boktai fan! It's a shame the 3rd game never got an official release outside of Japan.
I love boktai
The sun is in your hands

Oh that Venus lighthouse music from Golden Sun . I need a Golden Sun 4 switch so badly
Camelot did really shine on the GBA (Golf, Golden Sun)
Let's hope werden forget their roots and that they did other things besides „Marro Tennis“
We need it badly
Well there's still hope in the sort that yooka laylee had. Remember live a live? Now look at octopath traveler. Get what i mean guys? WE HAVE MF HOPE.

I know mother 3 is Japan only but there is a fan translation

Rayman Advance is up there for me. I picked that up recently for 5 quid boxed. I was shocked to see how good it looks, really didn’t think the GBA was capable of making an (at the time) relatively modern console port play so well. Definitely get this if you played the original Rayman. The soundtrack has been dulled down abit, but then it would have to be coming out of that tiny speaker! 😂
No Shining force: resurrection of the dark dragon, the sims bustin' out, urbz sims in the city, the sims 2, pokemon R/S/E, medabot metabee/rokusho, dragon ball buu's fury, Madagascar? This list has too much mario in it
