My bf bought a gba sp at a flee market for 20 US dollars. I told him maybe he shouldn't, but go ahead if you want to. When he got home, it turned out to be a AGS 101 and fully working! BEST FIND I ever seen at a flee market. Good job mate! 👍
It didn't come with a charger, and the battery was drained so we couldn't test it. He would have to buy it and take it home to test it. If it didn't work my bf couldn't just return it easily because he lives on the other side of the state, so he was lucky enough to even get his mom to drive him down to hang out that day. We also didn't know it was ags 101 while we were there, and he literally said "I already have a lot of GBAs" while contemplating to buy it. So I was just letting him know the risk, but I wasn't going to stop him, and I didn't, and turned out to be a great deal!
Same thing happened to me but I was buying one off of marketplace. Arrived and they said they couldn’t find the charger. Flipped it open seen the darker screen. Never flipped a 20 out my wallet so fast lol
@Hatori Ibuki It's because you can't return things back to a flee market. Maybe if you're lucky a seller would take it back, but all sales are mostly final. Her bf would have most likely been shit outta luck if it didn't end up working. Glad it did, sounds like a nice find for the price.

This video gave me the confidence to upgrade my very own GBA SP to an IPS screen. I’ve never soldered before in my life but after a couple minor quirks I managed to do it without damaging the original board. And the brightness works great! Idk if it’s just me but I noticed my original game boy and game boy color games look fantastic where the GBA games look a bit stretched. Probably the bigger screen but I mostly play GB Color and older games.
Would love to see a re-shelling of a (new) 3DS. I reshelled mines and the internals were highly different from a original 3DS. But the end result is an definite improvement. Love how this ended up. I've always put off buying a GB advance. Might take the plunge one day.
One thing the 001 screen does good: when im playing in the complete dark like in bed, i prefer it over the 101 because it doesnt blind you so hard. So i use my 101 in lit areas and 001 when its dark:)
Why don’t you put links to the funnyplaying and retromodding, the ORIGINAL maker of the IPS kit. They have also revised the ribbon for the terrible screen tear with V2. The irony is the original kit is CHEAPER THAN THE KNOCK OFF ON EBAY. This channel... you thank retromodding, and post links to Chinese ebay knockoffs..
I'd like to know this as well. I've just done mine but it only seems to stay on one brightness? Is that correct? I'm certain I read somewhere that you can still adjust the brightness but not as bright?
Also, the IPS appears to be double the resolution which may seem better than the 101 but in person, it really isn’t. It results in an image with heavier aliasing, if that makes any sense. I’ve just modded mine with this display but will probably sell it for an AGS-101. I’m willing to sacrifice the better viewing angles and colours for the correct resolution.
I would insert first the ribbon cable and connect it to the Mainboard and close the lower part. And when that is finished then I would insert the display. That give you more space with the ribbon cable and the soldering. That's how I make it
Looks pretty. But don't get these 3rd party shells from China. They are flimsy and are NOTICEABLY lower in quality. Better to get a mint ags 001 for 20 bucks and add the IPS screen to it.
@@xTheNameisEthan They "work" but if you're gonna install a new fancy screen, why place it in a lower quality shell when you can get an ags 001 for cheap? You can even put the old 001 screen on Ebay as a replacement and make a few bucks back.
The shell shown in the video is a rather new type of shells. The transparent shells are of a much higher quality than the (older) non-transparent ones. Also not as brittle as an old AGS 001 shells for sure. Seen him crack the shell old pink shell in the video? I'm hopefully getting a GBA SP AGS 001 for Christmas and really want to enhance the brightness on it when I get it, but I don't think I will be able to due to not owning a solder and being a little bit young to even purchase one.
Hey man. I read lower in thr comments that someone read that this isg when you dont solder up the wire it displays at medium brightness. Not sure how true this is but I'll be finding out in about a month.
Can you explain how to trim a non trimmed shell? I'm using a clear shell but it's not pre-cut for the ips lcd. The instructions on the site are pretty damn hard to follow for cutting the shell. Appreciate it!
I also got my screen from retro modding, and the gba sp logo wasn't on it. Is it some sticker that I just missed? Or does it usually just come with it already on?
@@TheRetroFuture The adapters do the job but I have seen people do actual installs of headphone jacks. I was tempted to try it but I actually don't need to use heaphone and charge at the same time so the adapters are only very minor inconvenience. That and a lack of a good spot to put the jack itself. Removing the link cable jack maybe?
This is a great mod but I've actually transitioned to using my DSi as my Advance emulator. It's weird so few people remember or care about the DSi, it's actually an awesome litle piece of hardware.
Dwellic / Darqh Very true. As an emulation device it makes sense but you’re right, I think that’s the reason I didn’t buy one back when they were new actually.
“That most of us grew up with” I grew up with the regular Ds. I was born a few months before the GB Adv SP was released Edit: forgot to say that I really wanna get an Ags 101 though, I’m trying to look for one that I can afford without having to fix because I’m afraid I’ll break it
I noticed that you did not put the foam pad behind the screen. I have not done this mod yet but have seen some videos saying the screen shifts in without it. Are you noticing this or is it a precaution piece and not needed?
On most videos the side bit of plastic gets cut completely while the one he used was just slightly trimmed down and still hold the screen well enough. I would probably still use the foam personally. On mine I used a dark smokey shell and the foam that came with my screen was black so it all look really nice.
I just finished putting a new shell on my SP - if I saw this video earlier, I probably would have added a new screen too! But taking apart the screen area was such a pain that I don't want to do it again - especially since it's near impossible to do without damaging the little rubber screw covers. Maybe I'll get another SP and start a 2nd project...
Out of curiosity, do you prefer AGS-101 or IPSV2? I’m looking to mod my GBA, but I’m struggling to decide between the two. And where would you purchase an AGS-101 screen from in the UK?
The IPSv2 screen is superior in every way besides battery life. I recommend getting both types of screens from Aliexpress (AGS-101), and Funnyplaying (IPSv2). It's the cheapest way and all those screens are coming from China anyways. No need to pay the premium that shops in the UK are charging.
FServ|Fantasy thank you for responding! I actually think I’m going to go for the AGS-101 due to the more nostalgic look to the screen with pixel borders and such. And thank you very much for the advice on where to find!
One of the best GBA games, the Japanese sequel has been translated to English now so you can now play the awesome sequel, I'd really like to see the Gamecube game translated too.
Many of the GBA SP shells are crappy quality. I've gotten 1 from ebay and 1 from aliexpress and both are terrible. Does anyone know where I can buy HIGH quality GBA SP shells?
Or at least modding it with a regular usb port the one wich the last version of the vita have. Sure USB C is kinda the future now or the new Standart but I donno both would be a great solution not gonna lie. But not sure if u can actually eqip something like that to the motherboard or wherever u can place it
1st of all, I grew up on GBC. 2nd of all, for the time, the lighting for the GBA SP wasn't awful. Considering the sad light that plugged into the GBC, the GBA SP did phenomenally well. And I still play mine, 80 minutes battery life and all, lol. But for a 13 year old console with internal battery, I'd say its doing alright. Much better than a modern phone
Hi Elliot! I don't know if you'll respond to this but long story short, I tried opening up my GBA SP and managed to round off a few of the triwing screws on the bottom so I can't open the SP. Any ideas on how I could get it open without affecting the shell?
Hey, finally took my attempt at a gba sp ips mod and very pleased with the result. Thank you for all your high quality videos giving me the confidence to do the mod!

Quick question, if you choose to skip the soldering what level of brightness will it be at default?? Maximum brightness??
I need to know as well. Reply to me to please when someone has the answer.
Hey man. I read lower in thr comments that someone read that this isg when you dont solder up the wire it displays at medium brightness. Not sure how true this is but I'll be finding out in about a month.
Thank you 1000 times for the side by side comparison!
You just keep rocking out these videos, just amazing
Always a joy to watch your videos!
Glad you appreciated it!
Can you explain how to trim a non trimmed shell? I'm using a clear shell but it's not pre-cut for the ips lcd. The instructions on the site are pretty damn hard to follow for cutting the shell. Appreciate it!
7:02 , its a ziplock bag, why are you doing that?
I also got my screen from retro modding, and the gba sp logo wasn't on it. Is it some sticker that I just missed? Or does it usually just come with it already on?
For It to be the ultimate GBA SP, it needs a headphone jack
That mod is possible. I seen videos of it.
eBay has adapters for a couple notes!
@@TheRetroFuture for the ultimate GBA SP, it would be nice to have a modded case that had the jack
Just bought one can't wait for it to arrive
This is a great mod but I've actually transitioned to using my DSi as my Advance emulator. It's weird so few people remember or care about the DSi, it's actually an awesome litle piece of hardware.
It was pretty great in design. The only drawback was them not supporting gameboy games
Dwellic / Darqh Very true. As an emulation device it makes sense but you’re right, I think that’s the reason I didn’t buy one back when they were new actually.
How do you give the advance sp a meh? it's the best iteration of the gameboy, period.
I finally found you again! Use to watch your videos in my recommended and then you vanished! Subbing now! Keep up the good work!
So can i do this without any soldering? Like if i just connect the ribbon cable?
“That most of us grew up with”
I grew up with the regular Ds. I was born a few months before the GB Adv SP was released
Edit: forgot to say that I really wanna get an Ags 101 though, I’m trying to look for one that I can afford without having to fix because I’m afraid I’ll break it
hi man your biggest fan from india... love you!!!!!!
I've been wanting this mod for so long. Thank you for creating this video. You are building my confidence in soldering simple task like this
I noticed that you did not put the foam pad behind the screen. I have not done this mod yet but have seen some videos saying the screen shifts in without it. Are you noticing this or is it a precaution piece and not needed?
He his using the trimmed shell from Retro Modding which don't need the foam :)
On most videos the side bit of plastic gets cut completely while the one he used was just slightly trimmed down and still hold the screen well enough. I would probably still use the foam personally. On mine I used a dark smokey shell and the foam that came with my screen was black so it all look really nice.
That looks sick!
I think so too!
What is the weird transparent gel on top of the soldering bit?

So would this screen work with an ags101 motherboard?
God I wish I was born earlier than 2007 to experience this amazing console at it's prime
Fr
@@swallow_skyla3602 a little too late for that one
Lol I don’t even have an sp I just like watching this stuff
I got a game boy advance sp ags 101 for 50$ Canadian dollars
0:06 Sorry, DS Lite for me. Few generation behind, I am.
Is there a difference between the IPS V2 and the one shown in the vid?
Can this mod be applied to an AGS-001 model?
If I skip the soldering step, my screen will always display at the maximum brightness?
No, from what I've read online (Retro modding's store), that it will only display medium and off brightness.
Well Damn that would have been useful information in the video.
Hey man great video, was just wondering what the battery life is for the X1?
of course I find out about this 4 years after I get an sp 101.
What was that clear material you used when soldering? New to soldering and was curious.
It's been a while, but do you know what is was?
Dude, you should work for Nintendo!
how much of the shell do you need to trim down when putting in the new screen? is there a specific amount or do you just trim it down all the way?
Good clickbait. It needs a couple more things to be the ULTIMATE but good info overall.
Thanks!
Is there an IPS screen for the non SP gameboy
Great video! The end product turned out really nice!
Kuru kuru kururin !!!! I really enjoyed this game I am happy that others person know this game too :)
One of the best GBA games, the Japanese sequel has been translated to English now so you can now play the awesome sequel, I'd really like to see the Gamecube game translated too.
@@Wobble2007 Another kuru kuru kururin exist ? On which console ?!? :)
so that screen is bigger and higher resolution right? that's why you need the convertor board? very cool mod
the resolution is the same although the size does seem a little bit increased.
Resolution is the same, just a higher pixel density (4:1 ratio).
Many of the GBA SP shells are crappy quality. I've gotten 1 from ebay and 1 from aliexpress and both are terrible. Does anyone know where I can buy HIGH quality GBA SP shells?
They should have a mod where GBAs can come with USB c charging and Bluetooth
Or at least modding it with a regular usb port the one wich the last version of the vita have. Sure USB C is kinda the future now or the new Standart but I donno both would be a great solution not gonna lie. But not sure if u can actually eqip something like that to the motherboard or wherever u can place it
Nice job mate
4:22 that was painful to watch honestly
Doing mine right now! Wish me luck boys
Any ideas on how I could get it open without affecting the shell?
you're fit. want a gobbie?
I’m heartbroken that he broke the pink cover 😭
I got an AGS-101 for 13$ xD
Hey, finally took my attempt at a gba sp ips mod and very pleased with the result. Thank you for all your high quality videos giving me the confidence to do the mod!
My screens to big :(
Really good your video, suscribed earned!
I love Kurukuru Kururin! Great video and the IPS screen looks awesome, a little bit pricey for my budget.
10:54 what is the name of this Game?
The mod is one thing but that game really caught my attention. Unique and fun concept that I need to try.
Kuru kuru Kurin! Great game.
This channel inspired me to do retro console modding! I'm hoping to start with a Gameboy Advance SP and throw an IPS screen in it (transparent red shell, orange buttonsand red LEDs, to match my Fire Red)
Does anyone realise that the screen he links and shows is different to the one he uses on the gameboy.the one he uses has a retro modding sticker
