Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

Do you have any experience with the Thickskin Obliquidens or any other Lake Victorian haps? If you don't have any experience with them, what do you think of the thickskin obliquidens? Let everyone know, and thank you for watching!
My brother has a 120 gallon mbuna tank and he loves keeping Victorian fish in with them. As you say in the video they like the hiding places so they enjoy his rockwork in the tank
@@darrensharples3623 That's awesome -- I think if I ever get an mbuna tank, I might keep some Victorians with them. It seems like they might even like that more than being with peas and haps from Lake Malawi.
This guy is very handsome, I don't remember having a Thickskin before but like you said here now I want one lol, thank you for sharing all your info!
Thank you, Polly!
nice 👍🎉
Thank you
Very nice! There’s lots of gorgeous vics and the more we keep them, the better chance of survival they have.
I’d like to see more vids on them
Ruby green, tri color fulu, Xmas fulu , P.nyereri, and
Kenya gold are just a few stunning types
Great video!
Thank you!
It’s funny because I’ll be getting my SP-44 back this weekend 😁😁😁
That’s great, Squatch!
Growing out a giraffe hap for my future tank. never had any problems. Super nice fish too. Mbuna. Mbuna. super nice fish too giraffe hap
Takes a WHILE!
@@CichlidCharmer IK he grew the slightest bit ever in the past month
I’ve got about a 3” in my show tank he’s just starting to flash his color, usually around feeding time. Lol
Yeah, and it continues to come and go based on their moods. I'm glad you have one!
I don't have any Victorians or haps in my mbuna tank but I do have a single Tanganyikan Tropheus 'firecracker'...They are all small at the minute and all getting along (I only have the more peaceful yellow fin Acei with him) but I'm keeping a beady eye out daily to make sure the Tropheus is ok!
I had a tropheus that I bought from a guy who had him with Ray and some other peas and haps. Brought him home and he was so cute. After a few weeks I found out he was attacking the eyes of all my fish when I wasn’t watching. It turned out he was the son of Satan. Who would know?? 😬
@@CichlidCharmer Alcotraz needs it's own solitary wing building for fish like that!
@@MakoyUnggoyTrue!!😂😂😂😂
I use omega one African cichlid pellets
How are your fish liking those?
Have you tried omega one super color pellets?
No. I have used TDO Chromaboost, and I did notice more reds in my fish that have red tones.
Nice video, but I have a calm tank at the moment, which I spent a lot of time on, not sure I would run the risk of upsetting everyone.
I wouldn’t expect you to, Stefanos 😬
@@CichlidCharmer totally understand we’re your coming from, none the less I appreciate the opportunity for all fish keepers we are constantly looking to improve our fish tank and water puppies life.
My experience is that with Victorians you need to have a boss fish to stop them from killing each other. Victorian cichlids are really aggressive to each other and a dominant Victorian cichlid will relentlessly attack a weaker Victorian cichlid. In my case my boss fish is my electric blue acara and he prevents my zebra Obliquiden from tormenting my Haplochromis nyererei cichlid. Recently I had a case of ich in my tank and my Haplochromis nyererei cichlid and my electric blue acara had it bad and so my electric blue acara sat on the bottom of the tank and then my zebra obliquiden cichlid attacked my Haplochromis nyererei and tore up his fins and made his color drab. After treatment my electric blue acara recovered and now my Haplochromis nyererei is recovering and he is back to full color. He sort of swims by the electric blue acara because the zebra obliquidens is afraid of him.
As far as mbunas I would only keep peaceful mbunas with Victorian cichlids. I have a rusty cichlid which is not too aggressive but I can see that he often chases the Victorian cichlids out of his territory. If you keep Victorian cichlids with aggressive mbunas then they will have drab color and ripped up fins.
You have a lot of experience with this! I've had a different type of neyererei that was a monster, but Zeke has been wonderful, as well as Monty and mostly Eduardo and his predecessor. I know it all depends on the unique fish you get -- you never know for sure how they will behave. That's crazy with your Victorians. It sounds like a stressful experience!
@@CichlidCharmer a fish you might want consider for your tank is a Neolamprologus brichardi. I have one in my tank and he never causes trouble but he can easily defend himself from aggressive cichlids. But only keep one because if they breed it is another story.
@@benjaminmorley1007 He's a looker alright. I'm probably not going to add any Tanganyikans into Alcatraz though, but maybe for a future tank 😀
I added a male Obliquiden I raised to my unruly females and they became the most peaceful fish in my tank! Prior to this I had lost their alpha male and they went stir crazy without him. I won’t retell my story of the introductions I attempted but to see how easy they accepted the right fish vs different types of haps or peacocks. But now that they have their alpha again I have them back with mbuna haps and peacocks either zero issues
What a cool story! Thanks for sharing that with everyone 🥰
