Seals rescued from DOG LEASH and JACKET

- Two extraordinary entanglements for Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN): seal one was trapped in the loop of a dog leash. Seal number two was caught in the sleeve of a heavy duty work jacket from the nearby port at Walvis Bay. Luckily both animals were caught early enough before they sustained any further damage.
It becomes clearer and clearer to us that our work will NOT be over by the end of the month, when our official seal rescue campaign #100SealsForTime comes to an end. We have so far caught 96 seals in the month of May 2020, most of them with fresh entanglements around their necks, fins and tails. When we were originally not sure if we would even be able to find so many distressed animals, we can now say with 100% certainty that seal entanglements and ocean pollution are an unsustainable epidemic.
Within the next two days, we will conclude our Non Profit Organisation's very successful first campaign, and then Antoine, Katja and Naude will plan the way forward.

When you see things like the leash and the shirt, you have to wonder if these baby seals dare each other to stick their heads into things.
Seals are very playful and play with everything they find in the water. Unfortunately, the world oceans are polluted beyond imagination and most of it is pollution. They also get caught in fishing hooks and swim through the loops of discarded fishing lines without noticing them in time.
My favourite part is when you guys run after them and they all go running into the sea it’s like they’re thinking “oh no not these clowns again”

You guys are awesome! I loved the seal that thanked you,what a cool little fellow! We have a large seal population here in New Zealand. As a journalist, I had to write a very sad story about a seal pup taken from a beach close to me. The person thought it was abandoned so went to take it to a vet, in fact he was just waiting for his mum to comeback from fishing with some energy and milk for him. As the person who removed him ran off when they realised they had broken the law by removing him, they didnt know where to return it to for the mother to find, sadly he had to be euathanised. Myself and the operations manager of our wildlife protection agency the Department of Conservation, sat together fighting back tears as we worked out how best to get the story across in a way it would educate people.
A shame tragic events need to occur to bring awareness.

Doing good work! I've noticed that the shears you use sometimes struggle in cutting tough woven materials and straps. May I suggest trying Tin Cut Aviation Snips as the compound leverage makes cutting a breeze and the upturned tip aids in getting the blade under the material without nicking the skin. The downside is that they are usually made of carbon steel and will rust if not cared for.
