Seal Rescued from Big Hook

  • A good start to the rescue day - Antoine has been looking for a particular seal for a while, and today was the day she was caught and rescued from a piece of fishing line. It was a typical catch and cut rescue, only a few short minutes from start to finish. The second rescue took longer, the rescuers from Ocean Conservation were faced with ANOTHER hook in a seal's mouth. We assume that there is a food shortage and seals are "stealing" bait from long liners and accidentally getting hooked in the process. The rescuers get their tools ready, they know it won't be a quick rescue, and carefully remove the hook from her mouth. It is hard to watch, but there is a happy ending: she is back in the ocean and is expected to make a full recovery. The rescue happened on time. 🦭

      I live near a beach, and I walk my dogs there every morning. We always come back home with a bag of garbage that has washed up. I wish there were more people like you, doing the right thing! Its worth noting that picking up ANY trash is good, because all rivers eventually lead to the sea, so even garbage on land has a good chance of tangling up an aquatic creature eventually, unless we pick it up and dispose of it properly! Everyone can contribute, even if y'all don't live near the ocean.

    I was watching Bondi Vet. The vet removed a fish hook from a dogs mouth. They used plyers on the eye part and then had a small rope on the rounded part. The hook came out as slick as could be. You should check that out. It was a very fast way to remove it.

    It's times like these that I wish that you had the assistance of a vet. They could lightly sedate the seal and use a mouth retractor so that you could get better access to the mouth and also reduce your bite risk. However, I was so very impressed by how calm this seal was and how well you worked as a team. Fantastic work!

    • @OceanConservationNamibia
      @OceanConservationNamibia  Год назад +31

      The sedation of pinnipeds is a very complex process and considered much riskier than of terrestrial mammals because of their proximity with water and their anatomical and physiological adaptations related to diving. A rescue operation with sedatives would also take on average 10 to 15 times longer, possibly causing the Cape fur seal to overheat.
