Seal's Head Covered In Gill Net

  • Gill net entanglements should not happen in Namibia because this particular type of net is illegal. Many countries have banned gill net due to the high amounts of by-catch like this seal. Once entangled in a gill net, the animal has no chance to ever get out of it again. It can no longer move or eat properly and will eventually find a very sad end. We do not know if a gill net broke loose somewhere or if the responsible fishermen dumped a piece of gill net over board because it is easier than discarding it properly - but we do know that this seal had very little time left.
The fishing industry is highly unregulated and even existing laws are often poorly if at all enforced. This piece of illegal net found in Namibian waters is the proof. 🦭

Oh my goodness, Tony and Denzil you've outdone yourselves with this rescue. The amount of effort you both put in to relieving this seal of that bloody gill net is huge and I'm not surprised you were all tired afterwards.
It's no wonder the seal was aggravated in the beginning, she couldn't open her mouth, the net was over her eyes, and she was stressed out. She put up a good fight but the relief when the muzzle line was cut was amazing. She could breathe properly.
Thank you both so much. I hope you have a great weekend.

You two guys did a fabulous job on these rescues. That little pup was so adorable, but the thought of that strong, healthy seal being reduced to a slow, horrible death because of that gill net was sickening. Thank you both for all your effort and sweat that went into helping these two seals. The gill net seal looked as exhausted as you at the end, and despite your fatigue, the jackals still wanted to see if you had a sandwich in the vehicle for them. Hah! Thank you guys. Sadly, for every few that care, there will be at least one that doesn't.
Also, equipment breaks and nets and lines get lost. It's honestly such a shame, to stop a lot of the issues fishing would need to be banned completely.
Understandably there are issues with that and the problem isn't going away any time soon. Best we can do is keep raising the awareness and encourage them to be more proactive recovering lost nets and so forth

And I am even more amazed at the dedication and physical & mental strength of these two men
They are amazing, despite being tired from holding her down and their hands cramping, still they continue to work to free the seal from this big entanglement
And he keeps apologizing to the seal for taking so long to finish removing the net
They are true caring heroes for these seals.

Denzil, Tony.. You absolute ruddy legends! First puppy was soo tiny, totally unafraid, I'm positive your soothing tones speaking to her/him played a big part in that. Second puppy, she must have been terrified with so much net blinding her, strangling her, gagging her..hopefully now after a rest she'll be able to hunt and fill her tummy with fishes.. Tony's talk to her about Gill net being illegal and where did she get it..priceless..police officers couldn't have asked her better. May karma bite those still manufacturing and/or using that ruddy Gill net.. Keep safe guys, u r the best xx 💜🇬🇧💜

I stumbled upon your channel yesterday, and have watched your videos for hours. The work you're doing is courageous and so valuable. Of course, I knew that there was a big problem with nets and other debris causing harm to the ocean creatures, but seeing exactly what this debris does is sobering and alarming. And what you're showing us is only a tiny fraction of the problem! I've subscribed to your channel. I see you have some very nice merchandise for sale. I assume sales aid your work? I'd love to see a really cute little stuffed animal seal, perhaps with your logo somewhere, that I could buy for my grandchildren. If I had such a toy, I would present them to my grandchildren and then watch one or two videos with them, explaining how very important it is to be responsible with waste and debris. I think I'd show them how y'all are cleaning up other people's waste to help the animals, and how we can help animals in our own area by also picking up trash, even if someone else put it there. I have 5 grandchildren, so if the animals were no more than $20 each, I would buy one for each grandchild. My daughters, when they were about 6 and 10, learned about the work Mother Teresa was doing, and they raised a small amount of money to send to her. Why can't my grandchildren raise money by selling unused toys or lemonade for your organization? Just my thoughts here. Another thought: Why not consider making tiny little seals, very small, and make them available at a deep discount, for schools, zoos, school clubs, and home schooling groups? You can send packets of pamphlets, stickers, keychains, etc., and kids can use these tools to tell people about your work while raising money for your work. Maybe you already do this, I don't know. I'm just thinking out loud.

Antoine, I just love the way you talk to your seals...it's no wonder a few hang out with you for a moment before they run back to the sea. I think it's a calming influence for them and for you. They may not speak our language but the language and feeling of love needs no words...it needs trust and I believe they trust you and for the most part, you trust them...and there she goes, waddling off to the water. She can now eat and play and rest easier. What an entanglement...even she is exhausted by it. Thanks guys, for another problematic but successful rescue.
