The average man, says Shaw, can advance not a single reason for thinking that the earth is round. He merely swallows this theory because there is something about it that appeals to the twentieth-century mentality. Now, Shaw is exaggerating, but there is something in what he says, and the question is worth following up, for the sake of the light it throws on modern knowledge. Just why do we believe that the earth is round? I am not speaking of the few thousand astronomers, geographers and so forth who could give ocular proof, or have a theoretical knowledge of the proof, but of the ordinary newspaper-reading citizen, such as you or me. As for the Flat Earth theory, I believe I could refute it. If you stand by the seashore on a clear day, you can see the masts and funnels of invisible ships passing along the horizons. This phenomenon can only be explained by assuming that the earth’s surface is curved. But it does not follow that the earth is spherical. Imagine another theory called the Oval Earth theory, which claims that the earth is shaped like an egg. What can I say against it? Against the Oval Earth man, the first card I can play is the analogy of the sun and moon. The Oval Earth man promptly answers that I don’t know, by my own observation, that those bodies are spherical. I only know that they are round, and they may perfectly well be flat discs. I have no answer to that one. Besides, he goes on, what reason have I for thinking that the earth must be the same shape as the sun and moon? I can’t answer that one either. My second card is the earth’s shadow: when cast on the moon during eclipses, it appears to be the shadow of a round object. But how do I know, demands the Oval Earth man, that eclipses of the moon are caused by the shadow of the earth? The answer is that I don’t know, but have taken this piece of information blindly from newspaper articles and science booklets. Defeated in the minor exchanges, I now play my queen of trumps: the opinion of the experts. The Astronomer Royal, who ought to know, tells me that the earth is round. The Oval Earth man covers the queen with his king. Have I tested the Astronomer Royal’s statement, and would I even know a way of testing it? Here I bring out my ace. Yes, I do know one test. The astronomers can foretell eclipses, and this suggests that their opinions about the solar system are pretty sound. I am therefore justified in accepting their say-so about the shape of the earth. If the Oval Earth man answers-what I believe is true-that the ancient Egyptians, who thought the sun goes round the earth, could also predict eclipses, then bang goes my ace. I have only one card left: navigation. People can sail ships round the world, and reach the places they aim at, by calculations which assume that the earth is spherical. I believe that finishes the Oval Earth man, though even then he may possibly have some kind of counter. It will be seen that my reasons for thinking that the earth is round are rather precarious ones. Yet this is an exceptionally elementary piece of information. On most other questions I should have to fall back on the expert much earlier, and would be less able to test his pronouncements. And much the greater part of our knowledge is at this level. It does not rest on reasoning or on experiment, but on authority. And how can it be otherwise, when the range of knowledge is so vast that the expert himself is an ignoramous as soon as he strays away from his own speciality? Most people, if asked to prove that the earth is round, would not even bother to produce the rather weak arguments I have outlined above. They would start off by saying that ’everyone knows’ the earth to be round, and if pressed further, would become angry. In a way Shaw is right. This is a credulous age, and the burden of knowledge which we now have to carry is partly responsible.”

Yeah I got a little emotional, My kid is the one of the smallest in her class. She is 6 but was deaf for the first 2 1/2 years of her life until she finally got her surgery. She knows sign language and she still has a speech impediment. So some kid las year in kindergarten called her a baby and why does she use her hands while she talks. She lost a lot confidence after that. First grade has been a bit challenging too. She has caught up a lot but she still small has a slight speech impediment now still like to sign, which is fine by me. But she is so afraid to talk to other kids, she has anxiety now about it. She gets nervous about going to school and about recess. I feel so bad for her I just told her to not worry just try talking more to other kids. Some kids are really sweet with her But some kids can be just mean.

Its amazing how mommy penguins can recognize their baby penguins among all these penguins
Same, maybe it’s a scent or something to know who is who.
@@icyunvme2400 Each of them has their own voice and mannerisms just like we do. :) If you were blindfolded I’m sure you could still identify your loved ones out of all the people in your vicinity.
@@PlaceholderDoe123 True
It's just like humans really. Most of the time we can find our mother's voices amongst a bunch of people. Our moms usually know to spot us well when we're out in public too.
@@jjjlove2260 yeah but atleast we are all unique, we might have similarities but still everyone is unique so we can easily distinguish, but in penguins case its might be easy for them but it doesn't seem to be easy hehehe 😅
3:25 I love how this precious baby looks like a tiny, little grumpy old man hunched over trying to keep up with mom
When the baby sat next to the bigger one and trying to make friends.. it was heart breaking to see this little one being poked at and then left alone😞
His little walk at 1:38 was too precious 🥺🥺🥺

This little guy is totally relatable! It's been 30+ years for me now, and I'm still learning to play my part in my colony!

I love how the mom is strict and loving at the same time.

I hope your having/had a nice day.
Poor baby!!!😢😢❤ I hope he found the friends he was looking for! Don't stay lonely, baby pinguin!
2:17 the chick being left alone for a second there kinda breaks my heart, but it's okay because I know that the chick found his way back to his mother.
I love how his mother helped him up when he fell over...it was adorable
*dad* penguins take care of the kids while moms search for food for the babies
@@swimmingfishies Not completely true. While this is true of the incubation phase, after the moms return it becomes a switching game. The mother will hunt, then come back and take care of the baby while the dads finally get to eat. And then they'll switch back and forth.
This is like emotionally beautiful to watch animals that are socializing and taking care of children or just small baby animal that scarcely discovers the world, life and learn how to live and how to manage life. They are so similar to us people more than we think. And that is beautiful. This is giving me hope. I love watching documentary about animals, nature too
I love being vegan for the animals.
@@NiaLaLa_V it definitely is wonderful ❤️
Those babies are way too adorable.
It really does look like a big family cookout with the mom trying to get the kid to play with all the other cousins, while the dads are getting together to talk about the good ol days.

It’s so sad to see him not being accepted by his peers! He is so sweet and precious! It’s not his fault he’s so little and loves his mama!
Watching this video made me appreciate the beauty of nature and the incredible diversity of animal life. It's incredible how animals, big or small, can effortlessly bring a smile to our faces. They possess a unique ability to evoke emotions of love, compassion, and pure happiness.
Had a few tears coming down my cheek. he’s so little and cuute. Poor thing. I know how it feels to not be social due to anxiety🥺🥺
For a moment I went back to when I was this little penguin...
@@lissaC.W. I hope your kid finds confidence in herself and explore world and make lots of friends
@@muskanvishwakarma3216 thank you, me too. It does sadden me she doesn’t like lunch and recess up there is only so much I can do. I just keep telling her not to be afraid to talk to others and meet new friends. And if they give her a negative response not to get upset try talking to another kid, and sometimes it’s okay to play alone at recess, and not get so stressed out about it. But yeah I too hope she finally gains more confidence this year with socializing with other and communicating with her teacher. Thanks 🙏
At 3:49, when the chick runs behind the rock and then it cuts to the mom, it almost feels like she has an a expression of "not this crap again."
Lol 😂

These furbabies are super cute. Unfortunately they are always in danger. So tiny. Love the communication they have.

Oh, what a wonderful mother, what a wonderful life, how everything worked out, how life developed, how natural it was, how things got done, everyone did what they had to, and life opens to this young little chick. Perfect!
That harp at 2:33 when the fathers are in the water is perfect, especially with that transition after that. 😊 The whole idea of them being able to dive 600ft deep and moving freely all the time is beautiful and kinda surreal when you see them moving on land. 😁
600 meters not ft!
