34 Seals Rescued In One Day!

  • This was absolute chaos! We kept finding entangled seal after entangled seal. This was during the peak of our rescue season in 2023. Therefore. we can’t say we expected such a high number, but we can’t say we’re surprised either. From group to group, we find seals mainly entangled in fishing and plastic related trash. 34 Seals have been saved, but the problem lives on. If we want to create a safe environment for our marine animals, we will all have to change our behavior.

@OceanConservationNamibia yes and no..a sad thing that so many seals have become tangled in the world of commercial and recreational fishing..and no..because you and your team do whatever to see the seals are freed from the trash left by those who are oblivious to the pain and suffering of the seals caught up in it..
      Thank you ❣️

We are unfortunately only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. The goal of these videos is to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

Funny how the best way to support them doing this is by making it so they don’t have to do this. Donate and share so commercial fishing line isn’t so prevalent in our oceans everyone ❤

Although I'm glad for the seals who were rescued and for OCN's continued dedication, it's very disturbing to know their rescues are just a drop in the bucket. Our oceans and waterways are full of our trash, the animals caused none of it and yet they suffer. Imagine if the air was full of visible pieces of plastic that could randomly choke you. Would humans then think it important enough to act ? Make laws, enforce them, recycle and find safe plastic alternatives?
It saddens me that so many people who are in a position to make a big difference are unwilling to do so. 😢

All sorts of entanglements on the pups, some are new, some have already caused damage, one gets loose and rolls off. The men are out of breath in most cases but when Antoine starts baby talk with the pups, the little creatures seem less tense. Beautiful work! I'm thankful for these pups and happy to support team OCN.

You can, every day. Reduce the amount of plastics you use. Ensure that what you have is disposed of properly. Advocate for a reduction of fish in people's diets. These and other actions you, I and everyone else can take will help reduce the load over time at the point where organisations such as OCN have to step in.
      Have a lovely day.
