It looks like a puppy following a friend down the road. Only the road in this case is Scotland’s Forth Estuary, an arm of the North Sea near Edinburgh, and the puppy is an energetic gray seal, probably a juvenile. After tailing kayaker Alistair Forrest and his companion for about a mile, the seal took advantage of a break in the paddling to hop aboard Forrest's kayak. I was snorkeling at the Cove in San Diego a few years back. I had my go pro and i am glad I did. I had a sea lion come 2 inches from the camera 4 different times. It was intimidating and exilerating at the same time. You have to remember they are Wild Animals. ❤❤❤

I went to a marina science center in east germany a couple of years ago, where they were studying Seals and Grey Seals in the baltic sea. One can rent a day swimming with these beautiful beings in station. They are amazing beings, curious, friendly and playful (of course, they are used to have humans around them). Being with them in the water was the most amazing experience i've ever had, especially when you have in mind that they can mess you up without any problems if they want, because they are totally superior over a human in the water.
really? that's great! do you maybe know if they still offer it and in which city it was exactly? I'm German and would love to visit it. I have been to a baby seal sanctuary on the North Sea in Germany several times. but I've never swum with seals, it must be so incredibly beautiful 🤗

When seals desperately climb on your boat its time to evacuate the area.
that's what I was thinking, but it looks like they are in some sort of closed area, like a bay or something: maybe it's the kind of place where many people kayak and swim every day and the local fauna lives in their close proximity. seals are very intelligent and curious, if they're used to humans they're likely to approach them just to see what's up.

They really are just the cutest little things....fun fact....seals eat forty percent of the west coast salmon run EVERY FRIGGIN YEAR!!!
As a side history lesson, this is actually why seals almost became extinct in America about a hundred years ago because they're so gentle of an animal and curious they would just swim right up to the boats and then be killed. Same exact reason why sea otters on the Oregon coast almost went extinct about 70 years ago because they're very curious and very gentle animals. But the sea otter population is back pretty strong here on the Oregon coast which is good. There's no reason to harm these really gentle animals.

@unkwn entity... Don't worry, nature has a way of culling humans from the planet as well. Its called, ironically, a virus. We also do a good job of reducing our own population through war. The activists have a way of talking out both sides of their mouths. They complain about poverty, starvation, war, etc - then complain about over-population, which is routinely controlled through poverty, starvation, war, and disease. If the socialists have their way across the globe, you will be happily rewarded with massive poverty and starvation (currently see Venezuela). That should take care of your over-population concerns.

That was cute. Once when I was fishing a big seal jumped on the dock with me. I thought he wanted to be friends or something. He barked at me, tipped my bucket, grabbed a flounder... and swam off. They are basically aquatic dogs.

Seals can be territorial. Leapord and Elephant seals terrify me, and they should scare you too! Yes - **some** of these seals have been friendly to people on *very rare* occasions.. **But** that's very, very rare. Most of the time they'll try to avoid you. If you pursue them or you wind up in a situation where a seal isn't avoiding you - gtfo immediately!
It's not worth it.
Just stay away from seals.
Also - where there's seals, there's sharks. Big ones.

Everyone’s saying, “oh he was tired” or “there’s a giant shark beneath the kayaks”... but nobody’s even considering the idea that this seal could have adopted the habit of bombarding kayakers for fish. The seal was so quick to reach out and sniff the person’s hand when they extended it, almost as if the seal was EXPECTING something.

Right. Everyone assumes that that seal is deathly afraid of humans. Seems pretty comfortable to me. It's totally plausable it's been fed in the past.
All three are plausible theories, and I don’t think the seeking safety one is as unlikely as it sounds
Lots of animals instinctively know when you have ill intentions towards them, or are hunting them, if the seal truly believes those kayakers were bad news, it would have swum directly in the opposite direction
But they didn’t have any ill intent, so if there was something in the water that was dangerous to the little guy, I can perfectly see him taking shelter with some humans, it wouldn’t be the first time in nature where members of different species stuck close to one another for safety
@@commandercritic9036 right but locals are arguing wild predation isn't a problem for seals in that location, particularly from sharks, and exhaustion is unlikely because you can see shore in the shot... so not really.

That was a seal, not a sea lion. Sea lions (not seal lions) have very large front flippers they use to walk on land, and they have noticeable ear flaps, where seals front flippers are much smaller so on land they wiggle on their bellies, and they do not have noticeable ear flaps. Also sea lions are brown and they have a loud bark, like the ones at the sea parks. Seals are darker in color, and they do not bark
