@@Nathan_Woodruff Pinning this conversation! I always normalize my audio to -18 as well since it's roughly 0vu, which is the level that plugins modelling real analog units are expecting to receive.
@@JayCrafton I think I’ve watched a video on gain staging and normalising to -18/ 0vu but whenever I’ve done that and used an analog style plug in, it never seems to be coming in hot enough to get the right sound. Am I doing something wrong with normalising or?
When I discovered that the higher the number the faster the attack and release were, I just banged my head on the wall for doing it wrongly for so many time!
Yeah, it's just like driving a motorboat vs driving a car. One steers normal, the other is reversed. Drive both of em enough and it becomes second nature ;)
I just purchased it but it is now working in my daw, when i open it on the channel it is not giving me any sound. It feels like the signal is no coming through it. I am using Ableton. Can anyone help me? Every other plugin from waves i own works just fine
Newbie here so be gentle. My perception of how to use this compressor is that the lower the input number is on the louder it gets. Does this mean the compressor is working harder when it makes it louder or is it working less? the numbers get bigger turning the knob counter clockwise. But the bigger the number the quiter it’s gets. I’m so confused
Sir a request could you please make a video on eq for vocals which gives a complete knowledge about how to eq the vocals and how to get it done professionally so that the output comes like high end recorded song . If uh see my comment and make a video it will so greatfull for me
The 1176 is so fast that even at the slowest setting I'm unable to hear the transient. It's in micro second. The LA2Ais attack is 10 milliseconds. Completely different story. The API2500 goes to 30 ms. There you can hear transient.
@@preciseaudioblog hey, -12dB to -18dB is the optimal recommendation but it's very subjective to what your recording. This avoids clipping and audio volume can always be increased later.
bro the compression did not get more intense as you increased the ratio lol. the ratios determine the threshold style and knee degree in conjunction with the input. like you can literally see how less the needle reacts the higher you go on the ratio setting
You are correct that the knee does get harder as the ratio increases on the 1176; that's a cool fact that I didn't know! But it's still a fact that the compression also gets more intense the higher the ratio is set, regardless of if it's clear to see just by watching the needle. The Google definition of intense is: "of extreme force, degree, or strength". The higher the ratio, the higher the degree of compression, the more intense the compression is. Thanks for the comment.
yea for sure 20:1 is still limiting style. in your example the compression lessened the higher you went because you weren't feeding more input into it as you went higher. the 20:1 threshold is much higher than the 4:1 on an 1176 so it needs more input to start working as it should. the fixed threshold thing has its quirks
@@clocks8137What are you talking about? This comp has no treshold but gets active via the input knob. The ratio tells how often it will grab the signal so the 4:1 is less often pulling the signal than 20:1. That has nothing to do with thr so called treshold activity limit.
what does the red light mean
Clipping
Vel Auguste how to het it to mot clip no matter how low i go it always turn on
@@kelioatkins3913 Gain down the track before it enters the plugin, ideally make it peak around -18db so the plugin works well.

The reverse action on the attack and release knobs always muddied my understanding. Your video clears everything up in a short amount of time. Bravo.
When I discovered that the higher the number the faster the attack and release were, I just banged my head on the wall for doing it wrongly for so many time!
Finally, the best compressor tutorial. The explanation of what attack and release knobs are doing to the signal is brilliant.
1:14 in and this dude has so far explained this compressor in the most simple way I ever heard lol
You can easily explain it more easily than the owner of the product.Ty So much Bro.
that's why I love this guy
Pretty confusing having the attack and release knobs working in reverse, I know that's how the original unit was designed but I always forget haha

haha yeah it is pretty confusing. i like to rename them in my head as "speed", so then you can just think of slow to fast
Wow I thought this was some large producer making this video, I didn’t even realize it was you until the end! Thanks for the tutorial
Damned by faint praise
You're an amazing teacher! I just subscribed to your channel too. I'm going to check out your other videos. Thanks man
Just bagged one of these bad boys in the Black Friday sale from waves, it's great!
Thanks, straight forward helpful tutorial without talking too much!
thank you, salute from Chile!
Incredible video, nicely done!
so does increasing the input knob increase compression? and u level it out with output?
Thank you so much for this video ! Efficiency is the key
THANK YOU .
Great video! Thanks for the tutorial
Thank you for this great tutorial!
very well explained, thank you
thank you ... excellent video and explanation ... super dupes helpful!!
Excellent Thanks
very useful 👌👌👌
really well done, thank you.
what if the audio file is sitting around -22 ? since every tracks have its own volume balance. Thanks in advance
add gain - look up gain staging if you don't know what it is
Thank you.
Hi. You cannot kick out In&Out relation causa its a basic thang - the knowledge about compensation.
thank you for this amazing video. it was so helpful!!
awesome video! ♥️
Thx for all the tips... when you say input should be around-18 Dbfs, you mean peak or rms ?

Is each individual drum mic recording being routed to the same compressor on an aux/return?
Isn't hardware better than plugins? Thanks.
thanx!

Hi, why the -18db? Thank you!
Hi, -18dB is optimal for recording (tracking) but -1dB to -6dB is optimal for plugin response (as mentioned by CLA himself). Hope that helps!
@@RussellFeatherstone thank you so much. What level should hit Pro Tools when you track with an analog eq and comp on the way? Thanks again. Cheers!

Don't understand how to set the treeshold in this compresor...
The input knob sets the threshold. Basically, the more you drive it, the harder it compresses.
