    Why not limiter for peak compression? And later la2a. Limiter is for that propose and I think that work better than cla76. What is the difference on your think?

    • @mixwithjerry
      @mixwithjerry  9 месяцев назад +2

      You could definitely use a limiter to handle peaks. The 1176 is essentially acting as a limiter though in some fashion by using a higher ratio. You also get some of the flavor and characteristics from a compressor if you use it instead of a limiter.

    • @Itsallawesome
      @Itsallawesome 8 месяцев назад +2

      You could use a clipper, limiter, or compressor and achieve the same result. Limiters tend to be more transparent than most compressors. Clippers are super aggressive limiters that intentionally add distortion, for character. Compressors can have as little or as much character as you like, and can be run aggressive or gentle, making them the most versatile and creative option for most engineers. It just depends on what you like, what you think sounds good.

    I am a super noob at this, so here’s a super noob question. If I decide to go this route with double compression then does that eliminate the need to d ess words and manually correct the dynamics of the vocal takes?

    • @mixwithjerry

      No you will definitely need to de-ess. Always try to set the level of the vocal takes correctly where you want them before adding compression.

    Hi, I just had a few questions. What situations would a ration of 12:1 be used on the 1176? And do people go even higher than that? Also, i’ve seen methods where the 1176 has a 4:1 ratio and only does 1 to 2 db of gain reduction, while the LA2A does about 3 to 7 db. When would this method be used. I have pretty dynamic, and sometimes harsh, rock type vocals, and i’m looking for a method that suits me best. I’m pretty new to making music, and I’m just trying to gain as much information as possible. Thanks for the video.

    • @ApexLaneProductions
      @ApexLaneProductions 10 месяцев назад +3

      There's no list of specific scenarios. There's just math and how it sounds to your ears. A 12:1 ratio is appropriate in any situation where you need 12db of gain reduction for every 1db of input gain that exceeds your set threshold. That's really the only objective truth that could be said about your question (anything else that can be said is subjective). What effect this has varies wildly depending on the source material and where you've set your threshold, attack, and release. Got a really peaky bass guitar that gets lost in the mix when you'd rather have something more consistent sounding, sure, go with a high ratio. But in that scenario, setting a threshold too low might squash the signal too much or setting it too high might not affect the signal as much as you would like. But you might also get to your objective better with a lower ratio and a lower threshold. It all depends on what sound you want. Compression is tough to figure out at first, and sometimes it can take years to hear it. I'm not trying to sound snooty about this. It's just that I've been there and I've learned from my experience that you have to understand the math first to know logically how the settings affect the signal and with enough time, you'll just hear what you need to without thinking about it.
