    • @heyiplaybassguitar
      @heyiplaybassguitar 3 года назад +1

      I agree - it's often overlooked. I feel like it's more blatantly obvious when working with hardware, but since most of us are mixing/mastering in the box these days, that knowledge isn't often discussed or shared!

    • @RolfGuitar

      fr, i attended engineering school and this wasn't really touched on, we really didn't discuss the actual components of hardware much at all, in favor of plugins obv. Ironic considering that's really the entire plugin game in mimicking these nuances. if i wanted a crystal clear comp i could use fabfilter all day, yet i find myself obsessed with what makes character

    Hey, bassist here. I use a precision bass.. Right now i use a VCA compressor on my pedalboard, it sounds really good.. but to add sustain i have to compress it quite hard (atleast 8:1) and it kinda kills the dynamics. Im thinking about using FET, OPTO or Vari-Mu. What would you recomand? What i want in a compressor:
    * Punchy attack (for playing 8 en 16th notes) at high bpm songs (120 - 140 bpm ) (my VCA-comp actually does that really well)
    * Good low-mids
    * Tiny bit of dynamics.
    * Colouring is OK
    * If possible: A video demo about all the compressor types with bass samples would be awesome.. 🙃
    I have heard FET comp bass demo's, but honestly think it sounds a bit boring.

      I checked the manual and yes it does feature a diode bridge. Unfortunately almost all the top resources online stated the 33609 was a popular VCA compressor and as I had never used it I assumed they were correct. My apologies! Even Wikipedia stated that it’s VCA.

      And just to add a little more…every website I have checked in the UK to try and purchase one says it is a VCA…I’ll try to blur or edit my video and description to avoid any more mis information

      @@inthemix That's true, everywhere you look it's described as a VCA. I also thought it's a VCA. So Thanks @Jaap for clearing that.

      @@inthemix Which website in the UK said that the neve 33609 is a VCA ? If you could send me the links it would be great! No problem, it happens to everyone to make mistakes. The best thing to do to be sure of the technology used in the compressors, equaliseurs etc... Is to check in the manual of the company or to send them a mail;)

    Fantastic video - thanks for sharing this gem!! I wish stock plugins in DAWs made it more obvious which type of compressor they are going for. But I guess at the end of the day we should be using our ears and deciding what's right for the job. Appreciate the little review segments you add, before moving onto the next concept/type. Well done! Subbed.

    I got UAD Spark bcause of the hype around the compressors but it’s seeming like they’re primarily for acoustic genres, not very useful for hip hop. Except maybe the VCA, which basically every other comp out there is... Do you have any thoughts on the usefulness of 1176 and LA2A in hip hop?
