  • In this weeks episode we are looking at a technique called breaking the base / bumping the base this technique is a fantastic massively versatile technique great between appointments especially with Balyage clients who want to freshen up their colour but don’t want to lift there Balayage up any higher. Fantastic for highlight clients who want to reduce the contrast of their own natural colour to the lightness of the highlights for more seamless results. The uses for it are endless really in a lot of ways when we talking about bleaching techniques especially.

    I love this!!! I have spent the last 2 weeks looking at so many different techniques and this one just made so much more sense than anything else I'd seen, so I did it on myself this morning and it came out incredibly well! I have quite heavily highlighted fine hair with my natural base being a 7. I used 10 volume with Vitality 1000 natural ultralightening color. My hair normally comes up really warm, but it didn't with this technique! I'm so pleased! Thanks heaps! 🙏

    Excellent work James ! Well done ! Yes, in hairdressing academies we have learnt that 10 vol is only for deposit concerning hair color, but in fine thin hair 10 vol could lift 1 - 1,5 level as well ! ! It is good that you show us to color the ends just to deposit some dye on them a few minutes before washing the hair ! Once again, well done !

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад +3

      Wonderful Christos glad I have invited you to the power of 10 volume when you are using tone volume if you are using a colour darker than the base you will mostly get deposit only however if you are using a colour lighter than the base you will get a lift also

    I have been waiting for someone, ANYONE, to make a detailed video explanation on base bumping for sooooo long, just happened to stumble upon this today, and saw that it was just uploaded a few days ago!! You have no idea, this is just WONDERFUL!! THANK YOU!! I've been having my base bumped since my blonde highlights in 2005. But lately I have been wondering if I would be better off without one, since I hate the warm color it lifts to, and lately have been wanting more contrast, and I didn't want to lift my hair, and then add dark to the parts not highlighted, because that feels like a lot of extra work to just be one level lighter than my natural base color, but my natural base color is between a 3 or a 4 SUPER DARK BROWN, and it takes multiple lightening sessions to even get the blonde pieces to be BLONDE, so I guess the base bump is what I must stick with.. we usually use an 8-11 with 30 volume but ugh just still so warm!! Any advice on this? We used to use a level 10-21 with 30v but I started wanting more of a contrast look, so we went back to the 8.. I really want to have it a bit darker, but when I tried it with 20 volume, MAN IT WAS LIKE LOOKING AT A PENNY ON MY ROOTS.... so bright COPPER :( Would you recommend me sticking to my regular 8-11 with 30v? If it's too difficult to give an answer to that, I totally understand, just thought I'd ask anyway. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

My hair is not as brassy as hers but I have a bit of brass where the dark and blonde meets. I'm going to try with an 8ash and 10v. My hair is also fine. I'm going to try on 1 thick strand first. Can I use t ice as the blue additive?

    You keep talking, James! In fact, you talk as much as you want. We LOVE listening. Fantastic video as always. I was just wondering, on the 'helping you to grow your channel etc', as far as RUclips goes, if you start watching a video and have to stop for whatever reason, and then go back, as long as you have watched every part of the video, does that still help you? I do watch them all the way through because I find EVERYTHING you say to be useful, but just to be totally clear. We want to do our best for you like you do for us. Just let us know what wouldn't work, like skipping bits or watching at a higher speed, does that affect your ratings?

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад

      Hi Sarah thank you very much glad you enjoy my chatting that is a very good question about stopping and starting a video I’m not entirely sure I think it’s okay to stop and start because they now have that little red line at the bottom that start she asked where you left off and plus return views are always a positive thing as far as RUclips is concerned but anything you can do to support the channel is massively appreciated thank you very much

    Beautiful results! Loved it! Wish I would have known this technique earlier. If the hair had grey in it would the grey hairs look too cool because of the blue additive? If so could you have also added some neutral to the formula?

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад +1

      Hi Chantelle thank if your question glad you liked the technique in terms of the grey situation if there is any grey hair present then the grey hair will just look cooler grey and flatter there should be no reason for it to go blue. You would probably find if you added too much blue you could turn it a little bit blue but then you would also turn any blonde hair blue as well so it’s only about adding a tiny bit in there to create a little bit more of a cool result. If you added in natural all that would happen is that you would make the overall colour warmer 😁👍🏻

    If I’m a level 4/5 and want to achieve a dark ash blonde without warmth should I use the same formula with 20 v ? Or what u recommend?

    Lovely. I want know if thre is grey coverage as well so what need to do at toning point?

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад +1

      Great question in terms of grey coverage with this specific technique you won’t get any grey coverage you will get grey hair blending because you are lifting the natural and you will be reducing the contrast between the grey hairs on the natural In the instance of this specific technique I didn’t tone it afterwards I just use the one colour to create the tone for the final result. If you wanted grey coverage and to break the base like this you would need to go back in and do your great coverage on the new level that you’ve lifted the hair to afterwards hope that all makes sense for you if you have any other questions let me know

      When you're talking about levels in terms of hair colour, it refers to general lightness. Level 1 is jet black, level 5 is medium brown, and 10 is platinum. The only time it would hurt is if you used 40 vol on the scalp or if they have some kind of allergy.

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад +2

      Thank you very much glad you enjoy the videos as Thomas said yes the only time will probably get a new rotation as if he has a higher volume or if the colour is very ammoniated or some kind of allergic reaction 👍🏻

    Is this a high lift color you’re using??

  • @Mary-it4om
    @Mary-it4om 3 года назад

    Im VERY confused! You're lifting the base with 10 volume? Im a level 6 and have 2 inches of growth on level 9/10 which makes my hair seem darker. Trying to find a base color before I highlight and everywhere Ive read recommends doing a high lift 12A WITH DOUBLE PEROXIDE. Your approach is quite different and I think I both like and understand it but would like clarification from you if you don't mind; is the reason you're using low volume peroxide to avoid pulling warmth?? Bcuz that's exactly what Im trying to avoid since I tend to pull reddish tones. I really would like some advise so I don't end up w a red tophead or a greenish color due to too much ash. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated!!🙏❤

      So I was using a level 10 with 10 volume knowing that the Alkalinity os highly thus lifting the hair But the tone of a level 10 is quite low due to the level so I added extra tone into the mix with the violet and blue additives that come along with the range that are used but that explains it 🙏🏻

      Hi Claudia thank you very much yes this technique is a cracker to use in the Sun glad you enjoyed it. I think under the Covid restrictions and all that jazz behave 10 minute colour is an absolute fantastic tool to have in the bag I have really enjoyed using it I started using it back at the end of the first lockdown lockdown 1.0 for us Just because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to double book clients and it has worked out really well for me. It differs a lot from Redken we do not have colour fusion over here so I cannot comment on that but we do have colour gels and the results are different that is for sure this behave colour gives you a lot more density in terms of town where is Redken definitely has a Shea feel to it that I like a lot do I like one more than the other know they are both really great hair colours but where the behave colour stands out especially in these times as I mentioned is that within 10 minutes you have got 100% grey hair coverage not on resistant hair may I add you do probably have to leave it on for 15 for very resistant grey hair but this is a real lifesaver at the moment I know that that isn’t necessarily the most concise answer in terms of which one is better they are just different and give slightly different results if you like Sheer more natural looking colour then go with Redken but if you like to definitely get the hair to look totally different with much more colour deposition like reds and coppers for instance then behave is the brand to go for if you want to save more time then behave is the brand go for If you’ve got any specific questions and don’t hesitate to ask all the best James

    Ok so why use a level 10 to lift one one shade why not use base 7? Is it because u wanted to keep the lighter shades through the bottom?? Yes? Or becayse u wanted to tone? Coukd u not tone with a level 7 ash and additive??

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for your question to the reason I’m using a little tiny so that I can take it straight through the end the colour will lift the hair irrelevant of whatever level you use providing it is lighter than the natural base on virgin hair so this is a way of letting the natural base and tone the end with out the hassle of using two different colours if I just used a level seven root tip then I would have just level seven hair hair as I wanted the hair to lift one shade tone the ends all in one hit

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад

      The best way to get rid of those unwanted orange tones is to use a blue Violet shade scenario for instance it would be a .12 if you are seeing orange you are probably on a level 8/7 the more orange you are saying the darker the colour you need 8 or 7.12 shade
