Out of all the professionals that I’ve watched on RUclips, you have been the most enjoyable. You share your formulas and you explain everything so well. 😁👍👍
That is a lovely compliment thank you very much 😁👍🏻
I Absolutely agree. 👍🏼
not to mention, the game changer!!!
Can I tell you something? I believe you will absolutely achieve your goal.
Thank you very much your positivity is much appreciated Marcials I will most definitely try my hardest 😁👍🏻
Very nice! Thank you for the class!
I love this. So so good to see such genuine positivity and support towards each other’s dreams!!!! I believe you both will achieve your goals. Stay awesome!❤️
I second that! This totally helped me fixed my brassy blonde into a fabolous color! Thx 🙏
Absolutely beautiful! Grateful to you for charing your knowledge with the community, Many Blessings

This comment made me laugh out loud but it’s a wicked compliment thank you
He really is. Super calming to watch
that's so funny. It also crossed my mind
Hi James, after doing a full head bleach on my head for the past few years I decided to grow the roots out and do a reversed balyage for a more maintainable look. THANK YOU for this video, the combing technique is so simple and so effective, I am in no way a professional but after endless hours of scrolling through root melts on youtube, Im so happy I found yours!! explained so well and easy to follow- a talent in both hair and teaching!
Superb holly so pleased the technique was easy to follow and you got the result you were looking for thank you for your comment 😁✌🏻
Hi there! I know the comment is old but I’m dealing with this exact situation as you and was just curious what kind of product you used to transition between your hair and roots. Shades EQ is a liquid so I wasn’t sure if cream based color would work with this technique.
I just found this video after 4 hours of looking up root smudges but I realised that's not I want, I want to do a reverse balayage.
@@TheLifeOfHairthank you so much as a pro, u ve taught a nice out of box technics ❤❤
😊😊😊😊😊
In the mid 1980s I overbleached my hair, I lived in London luckily and the salon I went to put colour on my roots and combed it through and the effect was a fine highlighted effect, I was impressed, I thought he'd just made the technique up for me!!
I styled my own blonde hair using this technique using 4N+5N for roots and 7G+8N for ends it was super easy and came out great! Thank you very much!!!
Wonderful Melissa thank you very much for your comment
I love his personality he's so humble and his videos are so soothing
That is very kind of you thank you
This tutorial is just what I was looking for! I went a little too high with the bleach for a balayage and I was wonder how, or if we could, stretch the roots without bleaching anymore, you answered all my questions! Thank you so much! 💕
Oh my gosh I Love hearing you say "Balayage" ☺Every time I see or here that word I automatically hear you say it. That word will never be the same again😂❤
Ha thanks Amber
I used this video to do this to my own hair, and it turned out BEAUTIFULLY! Thank you so much for sharing !!
Wow, that’s all I have to do …. I’m convinced. If I can successfully bleach my hair, I can definitely do this. thank you for the video
To look Paulina
Thank you for this video! I most likely would have ended up with lines across my hair if you hadn't showed the comb technique. It made my first reverse balayage very easy.
Thank you so much for this!!!!! I’ve seen so many videos of reverse balayage that just overwhelm me! This is doable and with absolutely beautiful results! Much appreciated!!!
Wonderful crystal hope it worked out well for you
Just discovered your channel and wow, I cannot wait to learn some techniques for colouring my own hair, you explain things so well :)
Fantastic Indiana so pleased that you have found the channel useful really hope the tips and tricks work out for you
Thank you for sharing your talent, your expertise. I will be trying this to fix a quarantine boredom bleaching boo boo.
Fantastic Ali I hope it goes well for you 😁👍🏻
thank you for you video. I am from Indonesia. although my english is not good but i find it easy for me. I learned a lot from you.
Wonderful so pleased videos of help you
I did this with my niece's hair after I dyed it red. She wanted to go blue and had considerable regrowth... I bleached out the red and with no experience just used the comb and blended out her roots... I was so proud of myself with the results! She had a nice shadow root and people asked her where she got it done so they could get the same result! I wish I could do my own hair, though 😂
Omg. Thank you. Thank you! Your technique really works! I remembered using a comb to try and blend but I did not tilt the comb back like you did and it did not work. They way you did and explained everything so well.
So I already had highlights but slightly messed up some areas at the root section and tried your technique using a medium brown hair dye (combed 2x since I’m doing it on myself) for my roots and it worked!!! I did not need to use a light toner at all for the bottom part. So we’ll blended in and I love it! I feel like a pro now. 🤗 You saved my hair just when I needed it.
Wonderful that is absolutely fantastic to read so pleased
I love the end result and all tips you give ! As a cosmo student during a pandemic and feeling like I'm not getting all the experience i should be getting working on clients this is great technique to start practicing!
You are very very welcome glad you appreciate the videos hope that you can Get the experience that you need to get your career started once this pandemic has slowed down somewhat all the best James’s
I think your technique is excellent thank you for sharing and teaching us and I don't think this video was too long whatsoever, You certainly can't leave out any steps so you did an excellent job on covering everything. No complaints about the time whatsoever.

Thanks for such wonderful videos l am a hair stylist that appreciates all your wonderful creations. Rock 🎸 on
It’s my pleasure sameera 😁✌🏻
You are really the one I've been waiting for dark hair to turn blond and ombre. Any of your video helps me A LOT
BUT I am still struggling for getting a ahsy blond from a 5 level without bleaching again
Wonderful glad you appreciated the video yes it is very very very difficult to get a Level5 Ashley without bleaching it you would need to use highlift tony and then tone it afterwards to have any chance I’m on the best you’d probably get is a level eight Ash result
@@TheLifeOfHair Thaaaaanks a lot for answering with such kindness.
I highlifted it yesterday with a 30vol. and Wella Lightener Brown Blond. I had just one level up, maybe due to my free dosage which I should have not done it this way. I am light brown with blond highlights with some reddishness in it. I should tone it as you have said. But however, I am thinking more and more about bleaching. Nonetheless, my hair is curly just as beautifully as yours and bleaching them breaks my heart, they would look and feel as a broom brush afterwards...
I just did this today and my hair looks SO good, exactly how I wanted it to turn out. Thank you so much!!!!
Fantastic that is so wonderful my pleasure
Are you a professional or just like me watching youtube and following tutorials lmao xD
@@deadlymoonlight just following youtube vids!

I want to do it but I'm scared lol
@@deadlymoonlight no I've only followed this tutorial. I say do it! He knows what he's talking about :)
I find this a little stressful to do. Worrying about touching dark to the light ends. I think I’ll practice more.
Thank you!

Will check out your patrion
That is so lovely to hear Lisa thank you so much for letting me know maybe see you over on Patreon soon 😁👍🏻
I love to hear you speak please keep up the great work 👏🏾😉
Thank you Kim that’s very nice of you I sure will ✌🏻
Lovely video! My only request is for the end result to be steeled straight. It’s a technical tutorial and too many hairdressers curl the end result, which hides the all important ‘blend’. Thank you and I look forward to testing out your technique
Thank you so much for this video!! I haven’t seen one that goes into this much detail with root stretching anywhere. Definitely gave me some “aha” moments as to why I’ve had some of the problems I’ve had. I pay monthly for quite a few educational subscriptions now but I would love to be able to support your journey to your digital program. I learn so much real salon life from you already for free here on you tube that I think it’s time to re-budget my education expenses lol . Thank you again for all your hard work and time ☺️
Wow, thank you Tanya that is great to know I love those a-ha moments that is one of the reasons that I teach so that people can have those with the information I shared. ✌🏻👍🏻
AGREED!!!!
I've loved that!Just straightforward explanations & tips for great results! Can't wait to try that on a client soon. Thanks!
Wonderful Jon glad you appreciated the simple straightforward approach I always try and keep things as clear and transparent as possible 😁👍🏻
Thanks a lot! I followed the instructions It worked beautifully on my hair
This was so great!! I wish I saw it it last night before I did my hair, now I'm going to use what i learned and attempt to fix it!! Thank you
Wonderful Heather Glad you enjoyed this video hopefully it will help you the next time round good luck fixing your hair
@@TheLifeOfHair I fixed it and the blend is nice, I wish I could send a picture to ask a question on one part. I wanted to keep more blonde around my face so only did the roots about 2 inches down in very front (rest of crown 4-6inches and blended) but with 2 inch roots and then to the most blonde highlights, I feel like it looks terrible and dint know if youd recommend just taking even the front down 4-6 inches with root color

Excellent teaching, thank you, James
Wonderful you are very very welcome
Thank you so much! I was clueless as to why I kept getting lines in my blending! I thought it was the tint brush handle that was making them. Frustrating! Learned something today! 😊
Wonderful Alexandria so pleased 😁👍🏻

Hi James. Thank you for sharing. I loved it. Jamie Melbourne Australia
Wonderful Jamie glad you appreciated friend
Can anyone help? I'm going to try this on a wig, only thing is the wig in the video already had a slightly darker root but I'm going to be using all over light ash blonde hair, should I still be able to pull it off alright?
Also, am I better to do one side first? Or start at the back? I'm just concerned about the dye being left to develop on one side for longer than the other and it looking dodgy...? (I know he only did one side for the purpose of the video)
Alsooo, Im gona try make the wig from scratch (sew wefts onto the cap and ventilate a silk top closure - God help me haha!) I was thinking I'd be better to make a slight dark root, just as a starting point BEFORE sewing all the hair on and then do the root drag and balayage as normal once the whole unit is sewn onto the cap - so that I can avoid getting dye near the cap and dont end up dying the lace/silk top or something. Sound like a good idea? Yay, nay?
Never done this before, shitting it, any help much appreciated!
Just to add. If you have dyed blonde hair that isn’t super healthy (not many are) I wouldn’t use the comb. I tried it. It was a tangled mess, my hair just isn’t strong enough.
Wow, excellent tutorial! Thank you!
Thank you
@@TheLifeOfHair so the second color i put in the middle needs to be 2 shades slightly darker then the black root?
That comb trick was life changing
Wonderful Alexandra I’m glad you liked it
this was very helpful😃. Thank you for your precise explaining.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. It drastically corrected my awful, chunky highlights into a beautifully balayaged hair. I couldn’t get an appointment for 2 another weeks and I wasn’t going back to the place where they messed up my hair in the first place. I felt helpless. After watching countless RUclips videos, I luckily came across your video. Equipped with a sense of courage from “how much worse could it possibly get?” I grabbed two boxed hair dyes and followed your video. I LOVE the result. Your explanation is amazing; so easy to understand and follow. Thank you!
Wonderful I am absolutely thrilled it worked out for you
I am going to do the same ! This video feel absolutely confident I can do this!
Here’s one I can’t find...I have bangs now. Front falling sort of curtain bangs. Do I just part them with my natural part (which is a side part that I’m trying to train to be centered)? do I part them in the center? You probably answered this twenty three times in the video and multiply that by twelve in the comments...what can I say...I can only pay so much attention to so many different things one after the other...😉
Just coloured my hair in the parting that you want to wear it in Ren
Thank you! I'm a budget girl, and I just did this on my hair with Loreal med brown Box dye.... I know, don't cringe, but it turned out fantastic!! It's beautiful.
So helpful! Thank you! It turned out amazing!
My pleasure, thank you 😁👍🏻
This video is amazing....
just wanted to confirm if I can go ahead put these colours on my bleached blonde hair without it going funny.
Wonderful Sunday that she liked it yes if you’re ever going to go over to lighten her you just need to ensure that is a little bit of ones in there some gold would be sufficient just to make sure the hair doesn’t go green 👍🏻
With such a blunt grow out, I am wanting to try this. My hair is naturally dark blonde, should I use permanent dark blonde color? Your instructions are so much easier to follow.
I would always use Demi permanent when doing this sort of technique
I want to see the ombre!!🙏🙏. When are you posting it?. Love your videos and explanations 💖💖
You are in luck because the ombré is live as I write I this 👍🏻😁
I was always told it’s “impossible not to get bleed marks while doing a melt” and come to find out it’s literally how you use your comb. WOW! Can’t wait to try that technique, it will save me much time not having to go through and re lighten the bleed marks
Asking because I need to know what to call this to better explain it to my hairdresser
Okay fantastic Samantha
idek if you’re still here but i have a red band on my hair my ends are super blonde and roots brown HOW DO I FIX
Hi Sarah thank you for your question that sounds like a very tricky question to answer indeed I would have to see a picture could you send me one on Instagram @the_life_of_hair
This is the best video ever
You are very welcome glad you appreciate it
Hi, If your client is happy with the blonde on the ends already would you just use a clear on the ends to smudge into the darker root colour or just not put anything on the ends?x
Love your uploads! This damn lockdown is no fun- but hey! Look at all the stuff we're learning! 😀
Thankyou loads! Xx

I’m still having a hard time finding a stylist who is comfortable performing this service. One question, I’m guessing the hair that you are combing into is slightly damp/wet?
Fantastic and looks stunning 😍

Thank you for this. Do I in need to use a color filler first?
I think you're just absolutely amazing with hair, and explaining things. I idolize your work, you deserve to go so far. You replied to one of my messages once, but I was too nervous to respond and I felt so bad for bothering you in the first place. But thank you for being you!

@@TheLifeOfHair Is it essential that i do root shadow after the ponytail technique with bleahc. .I'm about to bleach my hair using the previous video ponytail technique to ligjten my hair becaue I want a sort of cool rose colour with a few blonde bits but I don't want my roots this colur .I just died my roots a nice mahogany sort of browny colour in preparation for the bleach ombre balyage thing .. so now I've done my roots in about to bleahx the ponytails I'm asking is it essential that i do the shadow root after the ponytail bleaching technique ? Or can i just put my cool rose colour on top of the bleached ponytails when it's dry ?
Can you please tell us the ratios to use for each colour? :)
Well how about with the black hair balayage technique ... or kind copper brown balayage
The colour you choose doesn’t change the technique technique will always remain the same your colour choices will obviously create different looks and effects but you can use the same technique
this was so beautiful. I did the ombre technique myself and looks awesome but I have a lot of orange and yellow. You mentioned for ends the first time around 8GB with 9v and the second time around you said 8NB. Can you pretty please clarify the formula for the ends again
This tutorial saved my hair. Thank you so much I had a neutral level 6 on my hair that was very very flat. But thanks to you advise I could save it. And it turned out fantastic. It looks like my natural hair with great depth. You literally saved my hair and my mental health. Thank you so so much.

I have medium blonde long hair. I just want to do brown on the ends. Have a video on that ?
Just followed this colouring technique on a client, it worked out just perfect!!!! Thank you so much for making colouring so simple to follow xxxx
Thank you for a great video. It seems to me this technique would work best on an even canvas. I'm currently at a level 6-7 from box dye. My roots are a natural ashy level 5 with lots of grey. I'm thinking of doing a color removal and then doing a bleach wash (minus the roots) to bring it up to a level 8 before doing this technique. Good idea or no? Should I include my roots in the bleach wash? I worry about hot roots but maybe the level 6 I'm using for the balayage will cover that?
Thank you for posting this today, I have literally been humming and hawing over how to do a root stretch on myself and this is super easy instructions.
No worries my pleasure I’m glad I could help you 😁👍🏻
You’ve just taught me why I keep getting spotting when doing root stretches!! Thank you so so much this video has been helpful on so many levels!
SO HELPFUL!!!
Hi James.
Thank you so much for all your hard work in making these educational videos and for sharing your tested techniques with us. Watching your videos are so inspirational because they're easy to follow and to understand. I've been out of a salon environment for 20 or more years, but I still do family and friends. I now feel I've lost all my confidence doing hair because I'm not doing it everyday and my skills are rusty. I miss doing hair but my mental health got the better of me working so up and close with people. I would much rather have done the education and product side of Hairdressing than working behind a chair every day. Good luck with your future plans you truly deserve success with all your hard work and passion.
Shaun, Nottingham, UK
Thank you Sean for a lovely insight into your hairdressing career yes working closely with people can be mentally straining I can appreciate that. I’m feeling a bit rusty myself having not been doing hairdressing now for six weeks I can’t imagine what it would be like going much longer than this. Stay well Shaun thank you for your comment. 😁👍🏻
I was only doing hair for family and close friends for 8 years after having my 3rd child. You can get your confidence back 😉
Hello from Poland. I started my hair dressing academy 6 months ago. I got a stupid question. Do you use toner or just hair dye with oxidant?
I did exactly this when I was 16/17? And honestly my hair looked GREAT! Im now 24 and I'm soooo scared to do this to my hair 😭
Just take your time Kenya and I’m sure she’s done it once you’ll do it again
I have been looking for something to explain this for 2 weeks 😍 thanks so much I can now reverse the all over blonde I thought I wanted 😂
Oh fantastic so pleased the video was useful to you hope it goes well
I'm in the same boat
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!❤
I’m about to do this- I’ll reply with how it went ;)
OK I’ve dyed my hair on and off myself for years. I’ve just rinsed and blow dried it after following this tutorial and I’m in tears. I am so unbelievably happy with the outcome. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I’ve been wanting to go to a hairdresser for a while to get this done but haven’t had chance/money to do so. I feel like a million dollars 🥹
Súper....el oxidante será de 10 volumen
Always use the lowest volume when you’re adding tone
@@TheLifeOfHair que lindo eres
This guy is uber underrated it’s bloody ridiculous!
Lo ví recién!! Qué hermoso quedó el color en la muñeca, muy buena combinación de técnicas!!👏👏👏🇦🇷♥️
Can i just do the rooths brown without toching/coloring my blonde hair again blonde? ❤️
I’d assume for more than 50% gray I’d use permanent for roots, dry, then do this entire technique?
So I am not an expert but I've been doing my own hair for years and I wanted to do this to my own hair since my roots were coming and there was a horrendous demarcation line from when I lightened my hair. I knew I wanted to blend my roots to my light ends and I didnt know how. I bought the Ion ammonia-free dark chestnut and a light mushroom blonde which is basically what I had in my hair from before on my ends and my natural hair color is a very dark brown.. I followed your steps and my hair came out better than I had hoped. Your steps were so easy to me and made total sense. I was able to blend the dark chestnut to the mushroom blonde and leave some of the lightness from before. My hair is curly so my curls pop. Just wanted to say that my hair came out great because of you! Thank you for the great video!
Wonderful that is fantastic thank you for letting me know I’m so pleased your hair turned out well
Hello james i am big fan of the way you teach and all your videos are an inspiration . I have been confused with one issue which is (Should the hairs be toned whilr they are towel dried ( slightly wet) or fully dried) Because lots of time if the toning/depositing is done on 100% dry hairs ,it creates a lot of depth in the hairs. Looking forward for your expertise over this issue 🙂
Hi thank you for your question I actually made a video all about this so instead of me leaving incredibly long winded comment on here why don’t you give the video a Watch and if you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to leave a comment and I’ll do my best to get back to you 👍🏻ruclips.net/video/6LhK4s5SBPc/видео.html

Could I do this on prelightened hair, what colours would you recommend for a base 8 connecting to 10/81
Would you recommend this for short hair (between shoulder& jawbone length)?
Yes absolutely you could do this on any length of hair
