Can I do this technique with black hair? If so, do I need foil for a good lift? Coz her hair is light already and my hair is really black. Ps. Your tutorials are so easy to follow. Great job!
Yes you can do this technique on black hair but what I will say is with a technique like this the most levels of left you can expect to get is 3 to 4. so you’re not going to end up this light if you want to get the maximum kind of left from very black hair I need to use a foil to get the incubation/heat retention of file to lift the hair as light as humanly possible.
Just toned my level eight-9 with pulp riot icy toner & 2" igora Royale 9-29 & vol 6. Can I bayalage like this with Guy Tang big 9 then 10vv redken? Suggestions please to add more white

This has been my favorite, most informative balayage video I've seen!!! As a hairstylist trying to reach myself color, I appreciate you taking the time to make and post this!! You're very good at what you do:)

@@TheLifeOfHair Yes, it was so pretty, would've also liked to have seen the front, and the camera, was really close, so it was hard to see the over all look. But very beautiful!

Yes so do I LOL sometimes it’s tricky to remember our things don’t go to plan when filming in the specific instance when I filmed the front part from a different angle the footage was useless so it didn’t get included which is a bit of a shame but maybe another time
Is there a way I can do this at home by myself ?!? I can’t go to a salon because my husband works and can’t take care of our baby :/ I’m in need of a mommy make over :c
What I love about your education is that it’s systematic and truly educating. Not just random methods mixed together.Only question I have is do you put any bleach on the bottom, because I see you blend with your hands underneath as well?
Thank You for sharing your talents, very humble. Great gifts for humanity. I also love the fact that you don't use crazy music, soft tones are appreciated. This technique is amazing, I'm excited to use this for myself!!!
I did this technique on my mannequin at school today (after seeing your tutorial) it was super easy to follow your instruction. I’ll style her tomorrow...excited! Great instruction!!
This is one simply the best technique tutorial on how to balayage. For me it was a true moment of Heureka to understand that you’re keeping the sections pretty tight and straight while adding bleach, also the direction of the brush is vital. You’re an inspiration and a true idol to so many people around the world, thank you so much and keep these videos coming ☺️
I know Cathy sorry the money piece shots at the end of filming this particular video were just unusable unfortunately so I couldn’t include them if you Search (the life of hair money piece) into RUclips you will find loads of money piece videos that I have made
Hello 👋. The color is beautiful. I was watching this whole video to see the MONEY 💰 SHOT!?!?? Of her bangs and the framing around her face came out. No one ever shows the face frame of the end result 😤. Thank you for sharing.
Would love to have seen that money piece from a straight on view, I didn't get the full effect from the side and I was anxious to see it. Regardless, the results were beautiful.
You know what I think I forgot to mention it on this one the Lightner was with 30 volume it’s a clay bleach light now by Redken specifically for freehand Balyage. And the toner was 09V plus 09G that is a ratio of 40 g to 5 g +45 g of crystal clear to take it up to a level 11 tone Have a great day Best James
Hi Louis, On this particular technique there is no saturation on the underneath of the section so I could show you it but there’s nothing there to show you and other techniques on my channel I saturate the underneath I do showing the underneath section so you can see the blending Head over to the playlists click on the how to colour section there is some other various techniques there where I do saturate the underneath 👍🏻

Thank you for the subscription glad you’re enjoying the channel yes you can use this technique come back Asian her just bear in mind that you’re probably Only going to get maximum of five levels of left so you’ll be aiming to get a soft multi-tonal brown/dark blond affect
Okay just learning. What product is the best to use that doesn’t cause brassy tones? Do I have to use a toner? And does the client sit outside of dryer and how long does it process???
Very difficult for me to give you any good concise advice on this particular subject as I can’t see how dark your hair is but this is a good technique providing you only want to be three levels lighter than the colour that you are at the moment and you probably will need to tone it 👍🏻
Wow... soooo good! Beautiful job! Why don’t my balayage ever look that good?!?! Would love to do a “hands on” workshop with you! Do you do those ever? In Canada? Wound be happy to host you!!!

Hi lovely result. I can’t see the bonder you used in the description box as you mentioned in the video you used one as a lot of bleach at ends damaging?
Yes I can absolutely do a video on caramel highlights I will add it to my list of things to get done ✅. And yes I am still in Brighton I work at North Laine Hair co 👍🏻

I have a REQUEST.... When a client brings in a picture of a haircut. I know exactly what to do. BUT, when they bring in these pics, of BALAYAGE/UMBRE/ or a combination of BOTH . I'm frozen in being LOST. So it SCARES me away from being COMFORTABLE enough to TRY IT. I'd like an understanding of the 2 VISUALLY please please 💋🤗
Hi Angel thank you for your question, so you are in luck because I have just made a video about this obviously there is more to it than I’ve mentioned in this video but this video Will give you a good idea any other questions let me know
Hi, i am a Hairdresser from kolkata.. i am watching your videos from last 6 months.. it's helped me a lot.. commenting first time today.. i just want to thank you for everything.. And we are people from Asian countries are facing problem mostly while lightening the hair...Special on free hand & technique..bcz we get very thick & dark hair hete.. but the craze of balyage is increasing day by day... can you please make a video on it.. if there is any foiling technique to achieve the same effect...?
I am super pleased that the videos have helped you, As far as techniques for thick dark hair to replicate a Balyage the lifting process is obviously as you described the most difficult part, I always use backcombing techniques and foil when I want maximum lift from Balyage technique like this kind of technique ruclips.net/video/-dKjTkVW9bQ/видео.html For me this is the most straightforward way of getting maximum left and achieving a Balyage -esque look 😁👍🏻
Unfortunately I don’t speak Spanish even though I have this video subtitles in Spanish however I’m going to presume this is a positive statement thank you very much
I know this is an old video but I’ve learned so much from your videos and learned how to fix my mistakes as a student. Your videos are amazing! I’ve shared your tips and tricks with my other classmates and they too are amazed at how simple you make it.
Hi love watching you BTW. 🧡✌ My question is , what level developer would you use to achieve the LIGHTEST LEVEL OF LIFT? Or would you place those balayage painted pieces in a FOIL.??? I work with allot of dark haired clients... as dark as levels #3.
So with this type of technique probably the maximum levels of left you could expect to 4 if you want it lighter than that then you need to do a different technique really one where you can not worry about perfect blending through painting more of a backcombing technique for maximum brightness so in the instance of the technique from this video if I wanted maximum left I will just use 40 but if I’m putting it in foil however using her back home in technique or a full saturation technique as I like to call them then I would go in with 30 V or less ✌🏻😁
In this particular video I think I’m using 20 volume but I always makes my product 1 to 1.5 so that is the equivalent of 30 g of powder to 45 g of peroxide
there isn't a proper before and after. how can we compare. Also you didn't really focus the ending scenes on the top part of the hair....the main perk of bayalage is that it grows out nicely....we don't really care what the ends look like, we want to know the softness towards the root. Also you mentioned your face framing technique....you didn't even show it in the video! you probably want to keep your client identity private but we didn't even see it played out.
Thank you for your comments yes all these points are valid in this particular video not my best video I have to admit But we are always aiming to improve things I think my video skills have improved since this video so maybe check out some of my later videos all feedback is welcome thank you very much
Thank you so much for the informations which you share. You keep it so simple and it's so easy to follow the steps of tutorial. Yesterday I just cutted my hair following your video "Curly shag haircut" and it came out sooooo good😍. Today I'm trying out this video and I hope that my balayage will come out just fine😅☺️. Thanks again for sharing 🤗.
Beautiful! Thank you so much. And thank you for sharing prices I feel like that's the hardest info to get. I find i am always under pricing my services to match everyone else who i feel is under charging for expertise of these techniques.
You’re very welcome yes price things are difficult to get I always work out my pricing is on a per minute basis something I talked about in my six figure stylist series, you can check it out in the playlists six-figure stylist on my home page 👍🏻
Wonderful work and fantastic result ! I love your work , your way you explain things. I have never seen anyone who answers all the questions . Thank you so much!! You are my favourite person on all RUclips I have subscribed. I am not a review writer. But you deserve the best words !!
Thank you for this!! I’ve been looking for a good technique to do for myself and this is very doable and you explain enough without jabbering the entire time which is awesome for those of us that are easily distracted haha. Keep up the good work!!
Between two ficas trees!😀 I just found you a week ago! Just watched a pixie haircut part 1&2....a client wanted a pixie ...she loved it! I loved it! Your Life of Hair channel, gave my Hair life, new life...well done! I use Redkin too! I really appreciate how you make it about the techniques and not about you.Thank you.
Toner wise I just put one toner all over Redken Shades EQ 09V 20g 09G 10g equal parts, and yes I just didn’t get a good enough shot of the clients face to show the money piece off next time 😁👍🏻
Very nice did you put a tonner on this ? If so would of been nice to see which one I use Wella free hand and redkin , did you use a Wella or a redkin ?
Hi Mike in this particular video yes I did town are used Redken shades EQ are used 09NB 10 mils +20 mils of crystal clear you could probably just use zero 10 NB these days
Hi thank you for your question I think this is the answer to what you’re saying process installation isn’t so that the colour doesn’t wash off process and solution activates the bleach which breaks down the colour molecules therefore changing the colour permanently hope that helps all the best James
I very much avoid that I don’t know where you are based over in Europe Redken as a brand do not recommend the use of heat none of the L’Oreal colour brand is do over in Europe 👍🏻
I absolutely adore this technique, but my personal problem is I have a lot of Asian and Indian clients with very dark hair naturally. I find it’sfrustrating because they never want to pay enough for the service but it takes me all day to actually give them blended beautiful balayage results. My application time with foils is 3 hours sometimes more on one client alone! How can I do their hair faster? I have to use foils because it’s so course and dark
Great question yes I can see your problem entirely I can make a video for you about this subject specifically keep an eye out Over the next few weeks and I will talk about lifting Asian/Indian hair 👍🏻
Kelsey S i’d love to see this video because I have very dark hair and my hairdresser generally needs to use foils to lift me to get it light enough. It’s very expensive to pay for baby lights, regular foil plus foilyage....And I don’t dig sitting in the salon for 4+ hours....now… I’m taking matters into my own hands LOL
Dude. I love how relaxed you are. I’m only just learning balayage after 27 years of hairdressing. This helps me loads. Cheers.
You sound just like Ramsey Bolton from G.O.T!
Fabulous technique, love it!😍
Hi Dawn thank you very much you’re not the first person to say that LOL I’ll take it what a compliment have a great day all the best James

Thank you for your comments yes all these points are valid in this particular video not my best video I have to admit But we are always aiming to improve things I think my video skills have improved since this video so maybe check out some of my later videos all feedback is welcome thank you very much
@@TheLifeOfHair thanks !
Oh that is fantastic so pleased that those videos worked out for you how did the Balyage go?
Por favor compartenos tus fórmulas de matices. Gracias
09v 09g Redken Shades EQ plus 1/4 clear
Ah that is lovely to hear thank you very much for commenting on subscribing it is much appreciated
Thank you for this!! I’ve been looking for a good technique to do for myself and this is very doable and you explain enough without jabbering the entire time which is awesome for those of us that are easily distracted haha. Keep up the good work!!
Blended Out Way Better Than I Anticipated! Well Done
Thanks Rylan 😁👍🏻
Talk about adding texture with color!!!
Thank you very much Bree
Between two ficas trees!😀 I just found you a week ago! Just watched a pixie haircut part 1&2....a client wanted a pixie ...she loved it! I loved it! Your Life of Hair channel, gave my Hair life, new life...well done! I use Redkin too! I really appreciate how you make it about the techniques and not about you.Thank you.
Wonderful Leslie that is fantastic so pleased that you enjoyed the channel and the techniques have worked out for you
The first two minutes should be fast forwarded.
Take it you’re not a fan of my intros LOL
Beautiful... you’re a fantastic educator 🙏 thank you
Thank you Sharon very kind of you 😁✌🏻
It would be great to see your toning process also & with the focus on the finer foils around the face, how this looks close up, face forward
Toner wise I just put one toner all over Redken Shades EQ 09V 20g 09G 10g equal parts, and yes I just didn’t get a good enough shot of the clients face to show the money piece off next time 😁👍🏻
The Life Of Hair Interesting because 9V is intended to combat the brassiness , but why did you add 9G?
@@sunshine2049 it adds a beautiful balance of the two colors. I do it all the time! Best of both worlds!!
The 9G is to keep it looking bright it works beautifully well you should give it a go sometime I love the results 👍🏻
Perfect answer. 👍🏻😁
Beautiful work, James! Thank you for sharing all your experience with us. Congratulations from Oporto, Portugal. Love, Ana
My pleasure glad you enjoyed it ✌🏻
Very nice did you put a tonner on this ? If so would of been nice to see which one I use Wella free hand and redkin , did you use a Wella or a redkin ?
Hi Mike in this particular video yes I did town are used Redken shades EQ are used 09NB 10 mils +20 mils of crystal clear you could probably just use zero 10 NB these days
Also they like that was Redken to
Do you use processing solution so that the hair color doesnt wash off?? Tha k you for what you do!!
Hi thank you for your question I think this is the answer to what you’re saying process installation isn’t so that the colour doesn’t wash off process and solution activates the bleach which breaks down the colour molecules therefore changing the colour permanently hope that helps all the best James
@@TheLifeOfHair thank you sir.
Well this solves my problem of always having a hard time balayaging around the face!
Wonderful so pleased this video is helped you
I look forward to Sunday’s because of your fantastic training!!!!!
Oh Odelle thank you I am super pleased you enjoy them 😁👍🏻
Fantastic technique!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏🏻
You’re very welcome thank you for the comment 🙏🏻
Do you place your clients under hair dryer at all?
I very much avoid that I don’t know where you are based over in Europe Redken as a brand do not recommend the use of heat none of the L’Oreal colour brand is do over in Europe 👍🏻
Can you tell me what products you were using? And what if you wanted to go grey? With long hair using this process?
Just did this today in school watching this video let's me know I did it right lol
Wonderful Angelique hope it went well
I absolutely adore this technique, but my personal problem is I have a lot of Asian and Indian clients with very dark hair naturally.
Be firm with your pricing.
Did you tone the hair after bleaching?
Yes I timed it with Redken shades EQ09NB with a small amount of 09V
Sadly I cannot find a hairdresser with those skills in my area. Love the work done here, beautiful!!
