Thank you for this really helpful video! Could this be done with a box of permanent hair color at home, putting a dark ash blonde on dark brown hair (level 5)? I'm trying to make my grey lower maintenance, but I don't want light blonde streaks, just some lighter pieces that hopefully the few grey hairs will blend somewhat with. I've covered the blonde streaks with a semi-permanent medium dark brown, but I have just enough grey for roots to show and for that to be high maintenance. But I don't have enough grey to have the silver "money piece" fashion statement that I want yet. And I find trying to lighten it enough to get past the red tones, to then put a cool town in it with purple conditioner, just gives me a zebra look that looks like I've put super light highlights only in the front (which I have) on dark hair (which I have). I'm trying to get a low-maintenance strategy which will allow me to keep my dark hair, until I have enough grey for a silver money piece on my long dark hair.
Thoughts?
Putting box ash blonde on dark hair will not work unfortunately- it doesn’t have enough lift to bring the dark color out. It will look exactly the same.
@@kateb406 Thanks for your help! I eventually went with covering the grey with a semi-permanent cool medium brown (Natural Instincts). As the roots come in, I just apply it to the roots with "chunky blending". As the semi-permanent fades towards the ends, the covered grey and old bleached streaks look like caramel highlights. The plan is, when I have enough grey for it to be a "fashion statement", I will get silver highlights put in, hoping the semi-permanent will be easy to lift.

I did this a few months ago but since I basically have a bob and I wear clip in extensions, I have SUCH a hard time with the hair falling down beside my blonde pieces and cover it up.. i have curtain bangs from grown out bettie bangs and it looks like I have 2 short auburn chunks covering my blonde and I have blonde extensions but it still falls weird. So I recommend, if you have extensions as well, to do a thicker section on the top and thinner on the sides instead of a triangle shape like Brad did. I'm over it and I'm about to fix it today so it falls better and is more split than just chunky looking.

You would do it the same way. Maybe tone it after. But remember it may take a few times bc your hair will lift orange.

Toner, or purple shampoo/conditioners/hair masks are your friend for getting rid of orange/yellow/brassy tones from blonde! 😊
You use the color wheel - opposites will cancel out that color - for orange add blue (or ash it is called), and for yellow you add purple. Bleach your hair to banana yellow then use a blue toner... do it today!

Dont follow these instructions if you got dark brown to black hair as i got hot roots in the middle and the ends barely processed, especially if you want that nice blonde, should just do it as if you’re bleaching your hair😒 im actually so annoyed rn

this tutorial was great. worked on me. natural level 4 brown hair, left 20vol developer and bleach on for 20min but added in foil since my hair was dark. perfect blend.
Bleach is in waiting to wash it off fingers crossed 🤞

My sister was a ' hairdresser', for 30 years she colored my hair..
NOT once did she ever use a toner on me or her customers. She was very busy all the time , sometimes customers waiting 3 +4 weeks when they called for
an appt...
After she passed away ,, maybe 12 different stylist said a toner was

They looked at me like i was crazy...
I seriously enjoyed watching this ,,, and hearing whether or not a Toner would be used
But doesn't it sort of depend on the "tone" a person wants to achieve? Personally, I prefer an icy/beige blonde as opposed to a yellow or golden blonde.

I think 30 vol with toner would reduce orange

As a licensed stylist, I'd suggest to check it sooner than 35 minutes. Obviously depends on many different factors (product brand, volume level, hair type, hair integrity etc.) We don't want any little crispy money pieces. Lol.

Hey did you do the front roots straight away?
@@sandymkl I started in the middle of the front first, then saturated towards the ends. I did the top section last. I highlighted the front high end piece closet to the root. I stayed away from the root in all other places.
