Guys, I'm now offering Virtual Consultations to help with all your hair questions and color formulations - To learn more, go to ellebangs.com/consultations
Honestly, I’m 30 years old and I’m almost positive that this is my very first comment on RUclips, but I wanted I knew wanted to tell EVERYONE that I found this video years ago, followed it step by step, and absolutely LOVED the results! Mind you I have no type of hair training whatsoever. Honest to God, to this very day, I ALWAYS go back to this video every single time I want to give my hair a refresh. So I’m here to tell EVERYONE that this video is da bomb 💣 thank you so much ellebangs for all your hair coloring content because your videos have taught me how to color my own hair and make it look like I just walked out of a salon.
Still the best hair tutorial years later was posted before COVID. It’s timeless and classy. If you’re like me, you’re here for the reminder to paint brown diagonal down to your face. What a wild ride it’s been but this is really the go to
From hairdresser to hairdresser... you rock girl!!!!!!! I am the same open minded as you when it comes to doing your own hair at home, if clients are going to do their hair no matter what, mind as well educate them on how to do it properly, because lets be real here, salon prices are not the most affordable for everybody and a lot of people have different priorities. Always great videos, keep em' coming!
righttt.... i hate it when hairstylists get mad for other stylists teaching their ways... people shouldn't be forced to have to shell out a ton of money to get their hair looking nice even tho i do appreciate stylists work and will always go back eventually id like to be able to do in between looks myself
Plus, I have had many bad haircuts and color over the years and really would rather try to do it myself first. I can't afford $50 for cut and color so I hate when stylists get all snippy: "See a hair stylist." not gonna happen. I'm hoping my granddaughter will become one, lol!
Thank you for saying this! I have ridiculously thick hair and every time I go to get a color/cut its about $300 and I just cannot afford that these days.
Are you kidding me! I have been doing hair professionally for 11 years and this video is AWESOME! I just did it to my own hair a few minutes ago and I am now leaving my first youtube comment ever because I am amazed. The technique looks like it will not work at all and I was scared to death while it processed, but seriously WOW. It turned out perfect. I also added a shadowbox (dark underneath to the nape of the neck) and it looks great. It does not give an ombre look, It is totally sombre or balayage. My application even looked a little more sloppy than yours and it still worked perfectly. No spots or weird parts and you can totally do it in like 15 minutes. I mixed some 7A and 7N with 8N (more of the 7s) Aloxxi 10 vol. (if you want to match a dirty blonde root). Thank you sooooo much for making this video. I have been trying to find a good technique and I am very impressed.
WOW, WOW, WOW!!! Thank you SO much... your technique just took my hair from a cheap one-dimensional bottle blonde to multi-dimensional color I look like I paid hundreds for! I had a moment there where I was sure it was all going to go sideways... but, AMAZING result! I started at 9AV with 1/2 inch new growth and natural level 7 base. I used 7N for this. For all those asking about side parts - YES, you can part down the middle for application and it'll still work out perfectly. Looks great with straight hair, too. And because this was my first time application, I did the hairline all around my head and applied color all the way to my nape in the same progressively lower sweeping technique. I also used a feather brush I picked up from Sally's for better blending results vs hard bristles you would normally use for root touch ups. I know others mentioned this, too - I would LOVE to see an easy technique like this for adding in DIY highlights!
So, I do not often post comments, but I felt like I had to for this video. I've used this technique on two separate occasions, and honestly after both times I had a mini meltdown where I thought that I'd seriously effed up my hair, and both times it came out PERFECT! When you're looking at after you've initially done it, it kind of looks like a mess and you have this OMG moment, but as long as you basically follow the essence of the technique, for me at least, it turns out perfect. The dark top always Blends in perfectly to my blond, and just looks amazing. This is by far the easiest technique I've seen and the best video I've seen for it. I've used this technique using both Salon color with developer, and just like a normal box dye, and both times it came out perfect. I love Elle bangs and watch her videos all the time!
This technique worked beautifully on my hair! I dyed my hair all over blonde; but the roots were too brassy for my liking (even after toner). I used a light brown drug store dye and absolutely LOVE the results. It was very easy to do and this video is great. Thanks so much! I think this is the first time I've dyed my hair and actually LOVED the results!
I have done this MULTIPLE TIMES and it has turned out AMAZING so Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with us once again and saving my horrible brassy roots!
I know that this is 2 years old, but I just spent 3 days reviewing every imaginable youtube video for how to get this effect, and I keep coming back to this one because it's so easy to understand, and doesn't seem at all overwhelming. I'm going to do this this week - except I'm using ash tone on my ash blonde hair, so I hope that works out. I'll try to remember to tag you on instagram
you are a S*T*A*R. i live in Saudi Arabia and have spent $1000 this year to get highlights and lowlights and the results have been awful from 4 different salons. I gave up and looked for a way to do it myself online and ran into your video. I just finished my hair and for the first time in years, my hair looks great and I feel sooooooo relieved that I might be able to figure this out myself and not depend on overseas hairdressers. YOU ARE SO GENEROUS AND SO BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you so so much for sharing your knowledge!!!!!!!!
This video saved my life. I'm an already natural very very blond who went platinum just to get my new growth less ashy. Hair professionals couldn't get the root blending right after I was tired of bleaching... every ash color came out green or blue. I tried to fix it myself and my roots turned red with green ends. I was a Xmas decoration last December. So when I got that disaster cleared up, I actually toned first, then I used this technique with the lighter of the two colors she suggests. Such a relief, so spot on! Thank you a million times over!!!
I had hot roots after leaving a salon which I will never go back to. & I just followed her directions in the exact steps and I can finally go out in public without a hat!! THANK YOU SO MUCH. You saved my hair!! 💕💕💕
I can't thank you enough for this simple, yet thorough tutorial! I have been dying, bleaching and highlighting my own hair for almost 25yrs and this is by far the greatest technique!!! I love the ombré look, but was baffled how to do so to my blonde-colored hair with my dark brown roots. A friend suggested I try balayage and I found your tutorial (so glad)! I purchased the products from Sally's and did the "procedure" last night...I'm in love w my hair now!!! Not only was it simple and super fast but it has added depth and dimension to my boring blonde hair. Again, I can't thank u enough and I will recommend this tutorial to all of my friends!!!
The best thing I ever did to my hair. I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars at the Solon. Took a 4 dolor box of dark brown from the store and finally got what I wanted using this technique. Wish I could post a before and after. Just go for it ....... I spent 2 months looking at this U tube vid afraid I couldn't do it correctly. This is truly the best my hair has ever looked > THANKS SO MUCH ! I will try to dig up a dig up a before pic but I hated my hair. First I bleached it totally out blond. Back and forth to sally's beauty supply . They felt so sorry for me it was sick. I took this vid to a salon and asked for it to be done and I still got a foil that didn't give me this look. I have dark eyes and brows and dark roots and now it looks totally sun kissed with natural dark coming down. Just have a beer, " had too" all the money and time I spent getting that blond and putting that dark over it ...... relax ! and just do it .... Glad I did ! Hope she gets a spot on a talk show some day. " HOW poor people can look like hair models at home for cheap and easy " ! Look at her other vids. You cant go blond over night is right I had to surrender. Then try dumping a bunch of Dark Brown over it. Thats when the beer or yoga music comes in ..... BUT IT WORKS :) !
You have saved my hair at least 6 times now! I went to the same salon for years and have extremely thick hair(girls in high school actually made me feel terrible about it calling it awkwardly thick which at the time I didn't understand was jealousy) Anyways, I've never really had to deal with breakage because there's always more where that came from but the last time I went to the salon I've been going to for years to get a bit of a balayage to break up my very light blonde hair the stylist broke off a ton of my hair, charged me double for"having too much hair" and failed to let me in on all the breakage, rushing me out in a hurry. I would be screwed if it weren't for having "too much hair", and after this experience I'm terrified of having anyone else touch my head! I've used your technique 3 times now and the results NEVER disappoint! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I'm about to do it again and will definitely tag you on Instagram with the results! You are the Mother Theresa of hair follicles woman!!!!
I just did this technique yesterday and am beyond amazed with the results!! My hair is a darker shade of blonde all over so I purchased a 6G color to match my roots (and cover the gray). I didn't quite understand how it was going to work and not just cover my entire head from the top down with dark, but I dove in and went for it. Well it turned out amazing! It now looks like my lighter blonde was highlighted in and there are no harsh lines! Plus no more gray!! I still can't quite wrap my head around how the lighter color didn't get covered completely from my ears up (my big fear...that and picking a color that might be too dark), but the angle and application technique seems to leave the under sides (which are actually the top layers) uncolored and it ends up blending so nicely. This was my first time ever coloring at home and although I was in a bit of a panic, the results are fantastic! I can't believe how much time and money I saved and got exactly what I wanted! How many times I've been to the salon and shown them what I want, with my main focus being those pesky, unruly grays along my ears, only to leave with highlights and still crazy grays? Never again! Thanks so much for posting this video!! :)
I’ve saved this video because I’ve followed it four times now. This the first time I’ve truly loved my color and there’s so much less damage than o normally get. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your knowledge and teaching such a great technique!
after my last Balayage video, (see description box for a link) A lot of you requested a more In-Depth demonstration on how I apply the color to the back of my head so I decided to make this video! I hope this answer some of your questions and Please give this video a thumbs up if you liked it!. (and share it too obviously lol) :) xoxo Please let me know if there's other color videos you guys would like me to do.
This is great, so perfect this is where I need to get to- I was doing your old technique of the highlift & then highlight but need a break. I'm pretty blonde - do you need to use 20 Vol? Or could a 10 work? I'm just worried as I tend to pull brassy. Could a 8A with a 10 vol work?
Hi Allison, I used 20V, I am grey on thee roots, The color I use I get off ebay, 8.65 Med chocolate blonde cendre, I love this color as I do not want to go to a 6. My issue is how to ad blonde band in when I need it , Any Ideas, The above can out great!!
I tried this and it it turned out great! But now i need to touch up the roots, bringing the blonde higher up again, how can i do that? Please make a vid on that
Hi Annette .. me too.. it you figure it out let me know.. I do not see a updates video from her and I have begged.. now I am to dark but to worried to do the lights myself ...
This really works every time for me when I have made my hair too blonde right up to the roots and it looks too block. I have followed Elle's tutorial twice now, and it always looks lovely. I get compliments from people who say it looks better. So to all you naysayers who are clearly insecure hairdressers who hate someone from your profession teaching us novices these easy techniques which saves us a fortune, and works, just go away.....She has also taught me to trim my hair at home successfully! Thank-you Elle x
I can't express how grateful I am for you sharing this technique! It works a dream! I have zero hairdressing experience or skill but I thought I'd risk it and try this anyway...OMG it looks incredible, like a soft, expert balayage. I was bricking it whilst I was waiting for the dye to take because it looked uneven but it turned out like a professional job. Literally took 20mins! I will always do this from now on with my hair, thank you!
I just have to say THANK YOU!!! You saved my hair. I'm a SAHM and don't color my hair often but with a big trip in a couple of weeks I went out on a limb and went to the salon for a pick-me-up. All I wanted was a reverse Balayage but walked out with chunky bright gold hair that looked like it was foiled in the early 2000's. Mega bummer!!! I had instant regret. Being a SAHM I couldn't find time to get back to the salon to fix it, and let's be honest at this point I have no trust in the stylist. I found your video and took a leap of faith and holy cow! Fixed! I can't say thank you enough. Peace & love.
This literally saved my life. Last night I thought my beauty school skills could help me brighten my blonde with bleach since toning wasn’t working. I went to bed with an orange scalp. This morning I woke up and fixed it, with the watch of this video. It’s beautiful. And have my birthday dinner tonight. Ugh. Life savor.
I just tried this today. My bleached hair is between an 8 and 9 level. I mixed 50/50 of 7.1 and 7.3 with 10 vol and got the most perfect shadow root I was after. Thank you so much, I would never have imagined I could have achieved this myself.
OMG thank you so much!!! I'm a single mom and a student on a low budget. This totally saves my hair!! I used wella 7AA and it totally covered all my orange and gave me the balayage I was going for in the first place. You're the best.
I used Wella also. Do you use permanent or semi? I used the red box which is semi and it’s a little brassy. I think I need to go back over with the permanent. Thoughts? Thanks!!
I'm going to be 67 in a couple more weeks. I really wanted more color to my blonde hair and found your tutorial super simple to follow and do. My hair turned out wonderful!! I used dark ash blonde for my undertone and it blended in perfectly. I just updated my google photo so it will probably take a day to show up. Once you see me not wearing brown and wearing a pink top, that is the new pic! THANK YOU @Ellebangs . This tutorial will be repeated in 6 weeks to touch-up my graying/white color that will make it's appearance. Best part? This will be the easiest touch-up I have ever done without the need to color the majority of my hair!!
So I just tried this and I have to admit even tho it looks SO easy I was terrified to try it. Like literally shaking but I pulled it together 😂 my hair is dark brown and I recently got a blonde balayage but it turned out so bad. pretty much all over blonde (yellow/orange) with dark roots. It was awful I toned it and it was liveable. BUT I just tried this and I LOVE my results!!! You are awesome!
I’m not going to lie I’ve been watching this girl for years and she’s a hair God for blonde hair and hair toning. She knows her stuff when it comes to professional natural styles hair. Videos are always easy to fallow and work!
This worked perfect. I used 6N because my hair tends to lift to red regardless, and I'm glad I did. Applied a toner to my ends after the first process to remove some of the brassy tones in my highlights. I can now make my highlights last longer than 6-8 weeks and my pocketbook likes that. Thank you so much!!!!
Just did this today, right along side you! Turned out great!!! After spending $70 for balayage at salon, with no results afterward!! (the lady told me my natural blond roots wouldn't "take"... !??!) I did this myself, at home, for about $10 in products & 45 min of time. :) (And my roots "took" just fine, thank you very much!) Thanks for this easy, straight forward tutorial; it is the best one out here on the interwebs (by far). ;)
WHAT THE 😍??? This actually worked!!!!!!! I was the biggest sceptic and non-believer (because this clip only lasted for 10 min and everything looked way too simple and easy) but now after having completed this tutorial with just 5 sections each side I’m amazed with my DIY salon-quality result 😳🤩👌!! Thank you Sylvia, you’re the best ✌️😘
thank you!. thank you! I just did your technique with l'oreal medium ash blond box color and my hair looks great for exactly 8 bucks! I was getting roots and grays and brassy - I was a mess! but you saved me!
This technique is beautiful! Did this on myself today; hair was bleached throughout very warm/yellow. Applied Wella 6/0 and strobed a few flickers through the underneath. Emulsified when rinsing, shampood and applied 10/16 10vol to ends for 10 mins. So natural looking and no lines at all!
I love this tutorial and keep coming back to it. I've done this twice already and it turned out amazing both times. This time I hand painted some lighter pieces at my ends for an even more balayage-y look. I received so many compliments!
For those of you that have tried this, i'd LOVE to see the result of your hard work!! Please tag me in a before/after pic of your hair on Instagram @ silviaX
@@iheartyouunstoppable I used Wella Color Charm in 7N and then used Wella bleach to paint some lighter pieces at the ends. 7N gives a softer look, and not as much contrast. But if you want it to look darker like the video, use 6G :)
Wow, that was like magic ! I just bleached my hair today and I'm going to let it rest overnight before I do the dark lowlights. I love this technique way better than foils. Thank you-I hope mine turns out as beautiful as yours.
Thank you sooooo much for this video! I have been wanting to try this every time I go blonde and wanted my roots dark but have been so nervous and I finally took the plunge after my roots turned orange and it worked like a charm! It toned down the orange and looks like I have lowlights. You're amazing! Btw for anyone wondering, yes, this is as easy as it looks! Took me 10 minutes max to put it in my hair.
Thank you sooooooo much!!!! I just did this to my hair a few minutes ago, and even if it's not yet dry, I already love it!!! I had a weird and patchy root line and decided to try it. My application was a bit messy too but it turned out fine. I added a step though, after going through all your instructions, I went ahead and combed my hair (dragging the dye to the ends). And that for me really helped smudge and even out any line. I did that 10 mins before I rinsed. Thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much for this video!!! I just tried it at home and it turned out perfectly - I used Wella Koleston 7 and 20 Volume Welloxon. Applied and waited 20 min. After 10 min I jused a comb and brushed through a little, to soften the lines. Couldnt be happier right now - thanks!
So glad I found this video! I've been hit or miss on doing my own hair since I was about 12, but this was so quick and foolproof! I'm growing out my platinum blonde and this made the process so much less painful - and much prettier! :)
I can't thank you enough, I had my roots done last week, and I suggested a reverse balayage for low maintenance and the hairdresser left me with ugly horizontal lines with contrasting colours. I was able to fix it at home using your technique with a drugstore permanent color and it looks so much better and classier. I wish i could share the before and after here. Thanks!
Oh my lord, just did it and I freekin' love it! Previous color was a very light silverish blond but I have a pale skin so it was a little to much for me, no contrast at all. So for my roots i used 6N and for the rest SPN from Matrix SYNC, it's way more natural and I love it so much! Thank you Elle!
GIRL you just saved me so much hassle and money. I, like many other commenters, was really skeptical and thought I'd blow this. I love my platinum hair and didnt want to risk messing it up. But I gave it a go and my dark root grow out looks so natural and soft now!
Hairstylist here! I used the alfaparf Milano in shade 7.01 and 20vol. If you are wanting that natural dirty blonde regrowth this shade is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this video, I always do my own hair and never let others so bless you for sharing your techniques.
@@alymeyer17 so it actually went pretty well!! Its definitely more ombre than balayage on me. I'm super happy with the results so I consider it a win🙈😌💖
I always come back to this video because it has taught me how to do a perfect smudgy shadow root.. better than the salon I went to did. I used this video for YEARS when I was super blonde. But recently I had medium brown hair that had grown out/ faded to a light reddish brown and I wanted it darker but with a balayage to give my hair more dimension. Using this tutorial I used a medium cool brown and it came out perfect! My hair is darker like I wanted but I got to keep my lighter ends and its all blended beautifully. Also much better for my hair than dying it dark and then re-lightening the ends. Just thought I would share that this technique isnt just helpful for all over blondes and its applicable to really any time you have a lighter color and want to add some depth and variety of tone to your hair ❤ thank you so much for this video and helping me through the years no matter what color ive had 😅
Omg I just did this baylayage technique to my platinum blonde hair and I am in love with it!!!! this was so simple and so easy even I wasn't able to mess it up and I have messed my hair up soooo many times. Thanks for majing this video so simple and easy! You saved me $300.00 the box dye I used cost $2.00 and it looks great!
+ellebangs you are fantastic and i love your tecniques. i was a drepressed girl and now i fell good when i watch you vídeos. you saved my hair and my life. xoxo
+Brittany Me a 7n with a 10 developer is what you'd need if you want it to look like hers. The higher the developer the more lift you'll get and since you already have the lightest level, you'll want to use a 10.
My hair is white. I just did my roots 2 days ago and realized i am done with this blonde hair. I'm sick of it. I'm wondering the same thing as you Brittany. I'm afraid to color it cuz i know you need to repigment the hair (done it before)
These tutorials, I keep coming back to them. Incredibly clear, smart and the only ones I trust if I'm going to do something myself. So just wanted to drop a thank you Sylvia for sharing with us your knowledge and 100% class!👍🏻😊
Omg i used this technique and it turned out AMAZING! I’ve been trying to get this result and ruining my hair for a year now... thank you girl you saved me! I used 6a because I prefer more of an ash and washed it with the purple correcting shampoo for my brassy blonde. I couldn’t have asked for better results!
I like your tutorials because you seem mature and intelligent and are just there to inform, teach, and demonstrate and you don't try to entertain us or rant about some unrelated nonsense. I skip right past those, I'm on here to learn about hair color, not to listen to some 20 something girl' speak melodramatically about her hair and makeup routine. Oh and also you pick low key music not that distracting EDM crap. Anyway, I know you mentioned in another video that you don't recommend bleaching at home but would you consider doing a tutorial with Olaplex? I'm curious how you would use it.
I am just now seeing this video for the first time. I am a licensed hair stylist and i must say this is amazing! this is one of the best if not the only best at home hair color tutorials I have seen. i must say you looked like you just stepped out of the salon. Girl i have to recomend you get your license if you do not already have it
I followed this using a mix of a 6 (light brown) and an ashy 7 (dark blonde) with a 1:1 ratio. It came out perfect! I admit I'm horrible at sectioning off my hair and especially when the dye makes some of the strands stick together it becomes a mess. But this was not very hard and I did it all by myself this time. I got the perfect dark blonde color that's not too dark and I went from bleached blonde to a more natural and refreshed look...
I did this and it looks amazing! Thank you so much! Its really toned down my bleach blonde and made me look like a natural blonde. I love how I'm still blonde and not brunette as it was really important for me to stay blonde :) thank you!!!
Please never remove this video because I have been using it for the past 3 years.... my hair looks great because of it and I don’t know what I would do without it :)
I did this yesterday and yes it works! I was a little hesitant after reading some of the comments on here. I even bought and extra box of the color I was about to use so if it failed I could color my whole head of very long hair. I had previously used Age Perfect 9N with a 20 developer so I purchased Nice and Easy Light Ash Blond to do my roots with. I figured I can always go darker and I think I will next time, but I got to say the results were fabulous, Not a perfect looking Balayage but I am very happy with the results.. I think next time I will try using the Nice and Easy Ash Blond as it will give me more definition. thank you ellebangs, I will be following you from now on!
I was reading through the comments before I did this technique at there are a lot of mixed reviews HOWEVER in my experience all I can say is Wow!!! This technique is so easy to do yourself, even if you have no experience! I've managed to get my hair to a light blonde (naturally dark brown) but was getting tired of keeping up the regrowth. I used a 6N which blended beautifully with my natural colour (already had some regrowth). For those worried about not going all the way down, I know she only shows to the ear, but when you part your hair just go a little further down. I also put the die in the t zone (front and middle sections of my hair). So happy with the result, thank you :) absolutely love all of your videos!!! Now I might go back and do a few highlights :)
Your tutorial has been the very best that I've seen! I love the simple background music and the fact that your speech isn't saturated with "um" and "like" every 5 seconds (ditsy talk I like to call it). Since I'm pretty nervous about doing this myself, I LOVE how you didn't speed the process up but allowed your audience to see your exact technique! Thank you so much!
I'm going to try this, lol I recently dyed my whole head blonde but it's growing out and I don't want to bleach it cause my hair is really damaged. But I still want some blonde. Hopefully it's not to hard to do it by myself
I used this method to fix my horrible roots & it was a life saver!!! Genuinely looks like I’ve been to the salon and had my hair done!!! Application doesn’t have to be amazing either. Thank you!!!x
If you do this at home, please PLEASE use a wide tooth comb after applying the colour to soften the line. Or else it will be streaky and look terrible. Pick up your sections as you applied the colour and come from room outwards. Only just past where the tint/semi application ends (an inch or so out)
As someone who's been using this technique for the last three years, done it at least eight times, I can assure you, the above commenters panic and information isn't correct. I never use a wide-tooth comb and mine always looks bomb.
This video is my holy grail for shadow roots and has resulted in beautiful color combinations that I was able to accomplish at home. I even used this technique on my daughter’s hair, which is teal with black shadow/smudged roots. Turns out perfectly every time. 😍
Omg! I just bleached my hair and it was way too blonde!!! I am so glad I found this video! You saved my life and my Valentines Day too! It was super scary, but I trusted the process and I am so glad I did! Love my hair now! Thank you! Thank you!
Since this video came out, I have done this on my hair 4 times. Every time it’s over-highlighted and my roots don’t blend as well anymore, I know it’s time to do this! And now in quarantine, it’s time to go for the more natural look ☺️
I have watched this video time and time again every time I got it in my head to do my hair myself. I finally did it today. Not perfect by far, but I feel so much better about my hair. Thank you Elle!!!
Thank you soooooo much. I did this technique on my hair today and it looks gorgeous! I'm nearly 60 but now look 40 at best. Very professional look at home. You are amazing!
This tutorial was super helpful and my results are great! At the time of application my blonde was an 8G, but the centimeter of roots were extremely dark (asian hair). I used a 7G permanent color cream with a 30 developer mixed with a little 10 developer since I didn't have a 20. This created a nice light brown for the dark part of the contrast at the roots. After I did the application of the various sections diagonally I used a very wide toothed comb (do not use a fine toothed comb) to comb through my hair to soften and blend the color and then I let sit for about 20 minutes. The part that was already blonde took some of the color but not like I had feared when originally watching this tutorial. I think the combing was really important because it made sure there were no clumps of dye and everything just blended so nicely. I had one little mishap where I must have dripped a small bit of color on a part I wanted to leave alone, but it was close enough to the roots where I just added color after and it blended in fine - so be careful not to drip when applying. Otherwise this was fast, easy, and great results!!!
After so many salon disasters and insults from hairdressers I decided never to put myself through it again. I invested in olaplex the same thing I would have paid for in 2 salon trips has lasted me 18 months. It's been a learning curve but so worth it. The olaplex has saved my hair , these videos have helped me develop my technique, and I finally have the right color and lightening formulation figured out. If I mess up I can live with it but I will not pay to be insulted. In 20 years I have never gotten the look I wanted in a salon but now I can get exactly what I want myself. I wish I could post pics. 😉😙
Thank you so much for this video! I followed your tips and my hair looks so amazing, from cheap looking blonde to glam. I will def be supporting your channel.
So I have just done this method this evening. My hair is blonde balayage with a brassy colour root which I hated! So I used a natural light brown from Tesco, so I started putting it on couldant get my partings good but carried on regardless, it was a mess and the colour looked as if it was going black. I left it on 15 minutes and started to panic and cry 😂 washed it off and put some silver shampoo on after washing as I thought I’d made my blonde hair black!! Anyway turns out bloody great!! I can’t believe it worked!! I really thought I had ruined my hair but it looks amazing to be fair. Very impressed!! Thanks so much x
OMG. I had about 2 inches of natural dark brown roots with the rest of my hair being yellow/orangey. I followed this method using ion demi permanent. I mixed half 6n and 5n. I ABSOLUTELY love my hair!!! It looks like a melt from dark to medium brown to blonde. It also looks like I have highlights where the I made the parts! Thank you so much!!!
Hey Dawn- I know this is an old video but the Balayage look, now in mushroom brown lol🙄, seems to be sticking around. Since you've already tried Sylvia's method (how did she do this with a white shirt and no gloves?!😮) and she doesn't reply to questions, would you pls tell me how you rinse out the color without it bleeding onto the blonde ends? And how do you do the back bottom hairline? )h, and what are the brand/colors-her other video is gone- she uses? Hope you don't mind me asking all of these questions (and picking you lol)🙂Thanks !
Best tutorial /diy on RUclips! I lightened my hair for the first time ever. It was too much of a change so I decided to do this. Worked perfect! The while time I thought I was screwing it up, but no it came out perfect!
One more thing, I noticed in the comments that G is for gold. My blonde is a very beige blonde and I do not want gold in it (I'm too fair skinned and need a more cool tone), would I use something different?
You have NO IDEA how GLAD I am to have found you and the fact that you have recorded these videos are WONDERFUL for me. I am a stay-at-home mom of 6 kiddos and also homeschool and volunteer. Our family works on one income and really want to keep up my hair but have done so many boxed colors in a few weeks and am so discouraged with what I am dealing with for my hair color. I want to try going back to blonde. I had always done highlights but cannot afford to now. I hope to be able to fix what I have going on and be happy with my hair again. Thank you! ~ Trish

My hair was really brassy on the top so I went with Demi permanent 6N instead of 6G. I used ion I follow the instructions which was 1-2 parts ratio with a 10v instead of 20 because I want my roots a bit darker. You do have to be careful not to get color on other areas of the hair wiping it off asap. Needless to say my hair came out beautiful some minor spots but all good! Thank you so much!
I just wanted to tell you this video saved my hair. We are on lock down/quarantine and no salon's are open. I watched so many RUclips videos and this was the only one that was foolproof. I can't thank you enough. My hair turned out beautiful.
I did this to my very long hair with grown-out roots last night. I brought it down a little further than in the video and it turned out great - thank you!
This saved me thank you so much! I had blonde hair and tried to retouch the roots myself, it was a HUGE fail! So this was super easy to do and now my hair looks good again!
RE:COLD WATER RINSE. Thank you for all you do! You have helped me SO SO much over the past 2 years since I found you. I watched this video many times then tried it on my level 3 hair with blonde highlights. All went well until I rinsed in warm water in the shower 😢. I ruined my blonde 😮. I watch lots of other videos, but I hadn’t heard of rinsing in cold water. ❤
Great technique! I always say that I wish that I could pop my head off and put it on one of those mannequin stands that we got in Cosmetology School lol.
did this method on my mom and wow!! She looks amazing. I used Wella 4a and 6 a for an omber affect on her highlighted hair. It already had warmth added to it since I hadn't toned her hair over the summer, so worked great. pics in natural light tomorrow!!
A few days ago I made some babylights (copied from another your video) and today I did this to smooth the roots and achieve a more balayage look. I used a demipermanent color n. 7 blond sand and the result is amazing! Supereasy, no harsh lines, everything is melt together. Love you so much!
I did this 2 months ago I have super light blonde hair 12 I use the 6g it made my roots look hot and demarcated I'm going to use a natural this time I'm going to do it again I'll let you know
This has been the best tutorial EVER!!! I've been dying my roots only now to cover my greys - my hair is a 4A and my tips more like a 4N, but the result comes out super natural!!! Every time I go to the salon they ask me where I'm getting my hair done. I think your video needs to be a requirement for licensing. Your technique is perfect!
Guys, I'm now offering Virtual Consultations to help with all your hair questions and color formulations - To learn more, go to ellebangs.com/consultations
I feel so stupid for asking this but did you just use one color or both you listed?
love your camera or your lens, what do you use to film? x
Hi what is name of the product used for the darker contrast “6g”
Your hair came out sottu!
Was für eine Farbe hast du für den ansatz benutzt
Me too! 😂🎉
Me three😆👏😘
Me too!
Same here 😂

+Adela Turbett aw thanks!! Make sure to join the forum, we need hairdressers who can help answer questions xx
Wow, it's so nice to hear something positive from a stylist. I wish they were all as helpful and encouraging as you.
righttt.... i hate it when hairstylists get mad for other stylists teaching their ways... people shouldn't be forced to have to shell out a ton of money to get their hair looking nice even tho i do appreciate stylists work and will always go back eventually id like to be able to do in between looks myself
I have been trying to find a good technique and I am very impressed.
aw yay! i'm so happy you tried it and it turned out well!! thanks for leaving your comment and watching my video! xx
would you ever use this technique on a client?
Exactly! same as me. I am happy to could get my lovely result.
However it took time but I did.😉
breezi When you applied to the nape of the neck, did you apply using the same technique of diagonal sections and dragging the colour further down?
breezi ahaha it was the absolute same for me!!!
I would loove to see a new version of this tutorial! I bet a lot of us in lockdown are considering going from bleached blonde to a softer colour now!
Can you go over bleach blonde with 6& 7 and I’ve got a pixie might that be easier you see the hair in my pic that’s what I want so bad !?!
What color????
This is exactly what happened to me and I’m going to try and use this technique!
Same here! ❤️
What did you use?
Did you use 8g or 6g and is it wella hair color mixed with a developer?
You took the words right out of my mouth! I wish I'd tried it sooner too my hair looks so perfect and professional! I'm truly amazed!
D
Omg! I can relate to all of this wish i could see before and after!
My exact experience and hair! I'm trying this tonight, wish me luck. xoxo
I'm always charged more as well because of my thick hair. I asked for a root touch up and got more blonde hair ALL over!
Hi can you say me, what color she used in the roots?
Did you leave the dye on longer than 20 min to cover your grey? (I am dying my hair right now...)
@@kikamoni74 nope, stuck with the 20 minutes, but my grey covers pretty easily (not stubborn)
Fantastic. Glad it worked for you. Did you use a 10 vol developer?
Hi, sooo once we do this , how do we then ad light to it when its time??
This gives me hope, because I didnt even got any roots. Im just left with orange/yellow. Hope toner will help me haha
:) (And my roots "took" just fine, thank you very much!) Thanks for this easy, straight forward tutorial; it is the best one out here on the interwebs (by far). ;)
Literally just did this to my hair 30 mins ago, I am so happy I used the technique u showed here. I am so happy with the results!!!!
I had platinum blonde hair with light brown roots- this was amazing!! I can't believe I did this myself. Thank you!
thank you!. thank you! I just did your technique with l'oreal medium ash blond box color and my hair looks great for exactly 8 bucks! I was getting roots and grays and brassy - I was a mess! but you saved me!
you know she is good when her top remained white and spotless LOL, everytime I color my hair I need to clean even the walls =(
Haha I am the exact same!
same here, how she washed off the hair, so the color did]nt colored the blond?
Yep. All 3 bathroom walls, the sink, and even the loo lid.
me too girl lol
Girl me too! Got it all on my sink and the floor 😂
What products do you use??? The 20 level developer and what else?
@@iheartyouunstoppable I used Wella Color Charm in 7N and then used Wella bleach to paint some lighter pieces at the ends. 7N gives a softer look, and not as much contrast. But if you want it to look darker like the video, use 6G :)
@@xHarlequin 7N Demi or permanent?
That's a great step, my mom (a hairdresser) always Combs the color down and it really helps and blends
Your amazing to watch..right to the point. No bs or loud music🤣 the whistling in the background is quite relaxing. Thank you for you videos❤
Hairstylist here! I used the alfaparf Milano in shade 7.01 and 20vol. If you are wanting that natural dirty blonde regrowth this shade is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this video, I always do my own hair and never let others so bless you for sharing your techniques.
These comments have me so confident right now, I'm trying this tomorrow!
So how did it go?
Woohoo congrats :) happy it worked out! Xoxo
+ellebangs you are fantastic and i love your tecniques. i was a drepressed girl and now i fell good when i watch you vídeos. you saved my hair and my life. xoxo
I have Platinum blonde hair which box dye color did you use ? I'm worried since my hair is bleached so light that any color won't deposit correctly?
+Brittany Me a 7n with a 10 developer is what you'd need if you want it to look like hers. The higher the developer the more lift you'll get and since you already have the lightest level, you'll want to use a 10.
My hair is white. I just did my roots 2 days ago and realized i am done with this blonde hair. I'm sick of it.
I'm wondering the same thing as you Brittany. I'm afraid to color it cuz i know you need to repigment the hair (done it before)
You're that pretty girl who doesnt act like you know it. You're always cool and mellow. You have the best hair videos over anybody..
What brand is it ?
@@happyclassy123 I think it was Garnier Olia
were you a level 10 blonde?
@@hayleycarson9872 it was years ago but I'd say closer to 9
I've been using this technique for years. I'm a natural 8, but darken my roots to a 7 to color my gray. I love the effect. Thanks so much!
I did this and it looks amazing! Thank you so much! Its really toned down my bleach blonde and made me look like a natural blonde. I love how I'm still blonde and not brunette as it was really important for me to stay blonde :) thank you!!!
Did you use dye or toner?
You should do a new version of this tutorial! 😍
Why do you want her to make the same video twice? This one is already perfect.
I can't watch without thinking the entire video, "why is she so pretty " 😍😉
Thank you for this 😭 I need to fix my quarantined mess
Alice L same 😂
After so many salon disasters and insults from hairdressers I decided never to put myself through it again. In
20 years I have never gotten the look I wanted in a salon but now I can get exactly what I want myself.
OMG so glad i watched this i was about to do this to myself in a totally different way...this is perfect and so much easier!! ugh thank you Silvia!
This is my second time following this hair tutorial and I must say my hair came out beautiful! Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial
Thank you! ~ Trish
Your voice and the audio of your videos in general are so SOOTHING TO MY EARS.

I agree. I’m big on voices and hers is perfect. Not too high pitched and annoying like many others.
Thank you sooooo much for this video. I coloured my hair using this technique and i am very happy i saved over $200 doing it myself.
My hair turned out beautiful.
could you do a video on how to retouch the blonde and how often/when you do it. Thanks!!
Do you know if she did the video?
I did this to my very long hair with grown-out roots last night. I brought it down a little further than in the video and it turned out great - thank you!
You're the best teacher. Such gorgeous results😍
This saved me thank you so much! I had blonde hair and tried to retouch the roots myself, it was a HUGE fail! So this was super easy to do and now my hair looks good again!
What brand of hair color did you use?
I’m sitting here while my hair processes this technique! I’m doing purple roots on my fuchsia hot pink hair!
How'd it turn out?
Dope!! Did you only do from the ears and above or your whole head?
