      Wow this says a lot. Thanks for your comment. Picking up my Atlas White 5N in 3 days. Literally have never been this excited for a car in a very long time. Based on what you drive, high praise indeed (you have very good taste I must say). Sold my base 981 Cayman manual for this as I can no longer enjoy that car as much as I used to, so this should be interesting to say the least. More than twice the power and almost double the weight, but it seems to hide its heft well. Happy to join the band of N brothers soon!

    We can really thank Albert Biermann for this. He was the former Vice Chief of Development at BMW M.
    He went to Hyundai and became their Head of development. He Built the N Performance thing from the ground and he is a real petrol head.

Anyone can write anything and the sheep people believe it. I've had 6 Hyundais since early 2000s and not a single one gave me trouble. The more recent one I had was a 2013 Veloster turbo and I drove that thing to 150k miles in like 3 years and it never gave me any trouble. I will never hesitate to buy another Hyundai/Kia.

      @BWTECH0521 100% correct. Whenever I'm talking cars and someone brings up the tired old tropes, I immediately know they're not on top of what's happening in the industry. The HKG group has no choice but to try twice as hard to get half the recognition. They also back it up with the warranty. Many make the mistake of thinking lower price equals lower quality, when the reality is the Koreans are just better virtually integrated than most. Everything from chips, steel, to manufacturing. Their industrial base is massive and one of the world's strongest.

    42:45 Just allow owners to upload their own sounds and the modding community will be all over it (think Assetto Corsa).
    However, to allow for realistic, racing-sim-level emulation there needs to be some kind of an "audio engine" that doesn't just go off of throttle position/vehicle speed, but also factors in traction, environment conditions, etc. That might be too costly for automakers to develop for something they don't stand to make much money on.
    That said, what a promising feature! That could totally get me to buy a high-performance EV.

    late to the game but been catching up on missed episodes. Ioniq N sounds like an insanely interesting experience, genuinely something that should be on the radar of petrolheads. Engine swaps I didn't particularly agree with, except for Matt's S54 into Alpina Z1 idea, so here are my takes:
    Toyota 1GZ-FE V12 into Mazda Eunos Cosmo 13B with ZF 8-speed auto (smooth, reliable, torquey, exclusive powertrain into a huge barge) with the wrong original engine)
    Subaru EZ30D H6 into Lancia Gamma Coupé with any slushbox and RWD conversion (finally enough cylinders into the Gamma, still low enough for the bodywork to keep its original hood line)
    Porsche 993 Carrera RS into VW SP2 with 6-spd manual (still aircooled, no more anemic)

    -side-exit exhaust (as mentioned)
    -large displacement (as mentioned)
    -low redline
    -uneven firing order (probably the biggest factor)

    This is the 4th or 5th Ionic 5N review that focused on the fake engine noise and gear shift integration. I can see it for adapting to EVs from ICE vehicles and helping to have audible and kinesthetic feedback for determining speed and traction limits. It adds interactivity which can be good. I'm glad it can be turned off and nice that they offer it. I think future iterations of the N or other EVs should offer sound based on speed without gear shift and rev limiter power interruptions. That would provide the benefits of sound for at limit driving without adding lap time.

When you think about it - having gears is a compromise - you have to shift gear ratios to match the optimum part of the engine's torque curve for getting the desired speeds. We've learned to enjoy the experience but really, for a car you shouldn't you just have a go-pedal and a stop-pedal? I say this even though I drive a manual! :-) How far is too far? Could they come up with an option where you can spec your EV with little cylinders on the back, and a pellet-feed system to synthesize exhaust smoke? Sounds absurd, but fake noise and shift points sound just as out there.
    I suspect if I drove it I would enjoy the hell out it - we humans are strange.

      Knowing the gear and the engine speed provide more data points You don't have to rely on your eyes, you can use those to look down track, your ears will tell you roughly what speed you're going because you know what gear you're in and you know what the engine sounds like at that speed and gear. It doesn't have to be traditional engine sound, as long as the pitch and tone change with the presumed gearing, such that you know about where you are in the rev range and in what gear you are, even though the rev range and the gear are both virtual. It is providing you auditory information to help with driving, freeing up your eyes and mind.

    The qualifications for dream engine swap project - i think you need to start with a car that's truly "held back" by its engine. Vintage cars don't have the rest of the ingredients to handle the extra power.
    Like, I generally agree with your suggestions, but you would need to restomod the suspension, brakes, etc, too.
    And the LC is fine the way it is.
    If only there was a car that had a great chassis, hamstrung by an underpowered, unreliable engine...
    That's why my favorite swap is LS in an RX8.
    But i guess maybe that's more "most logical" engine swap rather than "dream" engine swap 🤷🏼‍♂️.

    Really excited for the ionic videos, sounds like an absolute banger. It will be a while until people are tracking EV’s at my local track considering there isn’t a charger within 30 miles. It could work for me, though I would just need to get a fast charger installed I already have 220 in the garage. I will say, however, diagnosing and troubleshooting an electric car at the track will prove to be either impossible or very complicated especially if you’d like to keep your warranty and not risk getting electrocuted. I just hope Hyundai can deliver on the service side of these vehicles. There is also the whole thing about EVs becoming a paperweight after five years. Diminished value and performance is not something a lot of people consider with electric cars, but is a very real reality.

And he was showing me his Z1 where he had to take the door apart to fix the motor mechanism, which is just kind of like a V belt inside.
    His name was Darren He’s got Ferrari some race, cars and things. And I bumped into him at the members meeting.

    Just watched Carmudgeon's episode about this car, looking forward to your opinion on it as well. My main takeaway from their discussion was, "who is this car for?" and I tend to agree. It seems capable, feature-rich, and decent construction, but it doesn't have a market segment to fit into. Closest competitors are Tesla Model Y and performance ICE crossovers like the Tonale/Stelvio QF, but that isn't exactly a hot market segment. Seems like Hyundai is chasing diminishing returns in that segment, just like they did with the Veloster N in the hot-hatch segment.

    • @JDubbs07
      @JDubbs07 Месяц назад +1

      Going off of your summary, my first immediate response to the question "who is this car for?" is "Who cares???" Performance cars are already considered niche due to them being low volume compared to their mass-market counterparts, and actual performance-oriented EVs are even more niche still. It would be naive of us to assume Hyundai is trying to set sales records, based on price sensitivity alone, never mind what the final product is. Rather, best to consider this a statement vehicle that's both a reflection of Hyundai's engineering ability and also a challenge to the rest of the industry that an EV performance standard has been set. Either you're better than this or you're not.
      TL;DR: it's a fun toy, don't overthink it, and be glad that it exists.

    • @redlion145
      @redlion145 Месяц назад

      @@JDubbs07 "It's a fun toy" is not something that most people will say about a $65,000 vehicle. I get that this channel has a slightly more affluent audience than most of youtube, but if that's what you consider a toy, you really need a reality check.
      MOST people cannot buy a car for it's toy-like qualities, or specifically, it's track performance. MOST people need it to ride well on surface streets, and have decent range, and do the things that other cars can do. We're not discussing a Chiron, where it's basically assumed that it'll be the 5th or 10th car in the garage. This is a consumer vehicle.

    • @JDubbs07
      @JDubbs07 Месяц назад +1

      @@redlion145 I've already addressed your reply in my first comment. Again, this is clearly a niche product. Niche products are not made for most people. As mentioned, this is an expensive product. Expensive products are not made for most people. The general consumer is more than welcome to shop Hyundai's more affordable EV options, which includes the base Ioniq 5. And, we already know that Hyundai Motor Group are working on more affordable options by way of their product roadmap.
      You should really get away from the notion that all things must be within the reach of all persons. Halo/Aspirational/Recreational products exist. This is not a new reality.

    • @redlion145
      @redlion145 Месяц назад

      @@JDubbs07 Regarding this model being niche and the lack of competitors, that's exactly my point. Who is buying a track focused, crossover EV? I'm not saying every car should work (or be attainable) for every individual; I'm saying I can't figure which individuals will actually put money down on one of these, rather than just say how awesome it is on the internet. There aren't many factory competitors in this space, and that lack of competition should tell us something about how poorly this segment sells. It's too expensive for mass market, not expensive enough for collectable, halo or aspirational cars. No one wants to take a huge depreciation hit on a Hyundai.
      There are some competitors though, if we're holding to the side body style and drivetrain and just focusing on price and power. Model X has a competitor trim, but that's about $10k more expensive. A Dodge Hellcat is fairly close as well. The Dodge Ramcharger is also supposed to MSRP between $60-70k, and it will have approx. 660 HP. The Rivian R1T has a 661 HP trim for about 80k. I'd argue that most of those models are worth the price premium over the Ioniq because of how much more car you get for the money. Was I supposed to not be able to find any cars or something?
      I think it's disingenuous to put a price limit for your comparison, but I tried to keep to the budget anyway. If you were to compare, say, the fit and finish of the Hyundai to a Rivian, I think everyone would see where the extra 10-15k went. It's not like horsepower is the only thing your money is buying.

    I wonder if there is tech that would allow the driver to switch the resources of an EV like this from 600 hp and 220 miles of range to say, 200hp and 300 miles of range. Or even for a track day situation at a place with no fast chargers, let me switch to 300 hp and get 2 sessions before I have to charge. But really for the real world practicality, it would be great if you could have a "commuter mode" where you get a fraction of the HP, but much more range.

Hyundai are selling people on the fact they offer 2 year free charging and a 10k discount. But they definitely fail to mention just how shit the charging infrastructure is currently. With only having free charging through electrify America, it's basically a 30-45 minute wait at charging stations in a que of other ioniq5s. It feels silly almost how bad the infrastructure is for charge stations. Looking on the electrify America app, it just shows a giant notice on the mail "all chargers in use" across the entire map. I definitely completely understand the frustration you guys have been talking about over the past years of ownership of the Mach-E.
