45:00 - "Fluid-damped cabin fixture" - I think the lost-in-translation part is to think of "fixture" not the way we usually do, as in "light fixture", but in terms of "method of affixing."
So I think "cabin fixture" would describe body mounts, if it was body-on-frame.
So, I know they had liquid-filled engine mounts, but this makes me wonder:
Did the LS400 have liquid-filled subframe mounts?

I think you are right, because around the same time the 'luxury' top end foresters of the time had fluid filled LCA bushes

Previous owner of 92 ls400 here. It could refer to overhead passenger grab handles. When you let them go, they slowly rise back into place instead of slamming against the headliner. Incredibly common in modern cars but a luxury innovation in the late 80s during development. Same with the glovebox slowly lowering.

Just saying, but a holiday is exactly when someone might want to take their fancy car out for a drive. The owners probably see the facility as a fancy car park and expect it to be open every day all year.

Every plumber I know is absolutely crushing life... Plumbers and electricians.
Tell your kids to skip college and go to trade school.
Failing to get into the university course I wanted to turned out to be the best thing that happened to me. Didn't know it at the time, but I got a job in mining and learned a bunch of skills while earning great money. Set me up for the rest of my life.

I failed to get into the HVAC course at my local community College and took programming courses instead then used those credits to get into a state university to get a 4 year bachelors in computer science. Now I'm making over three times the average salary that I would as an HVAC journeyman. Different strokes for different folks 🤷‍♂️

@@wtfchazpwnt Well that actually illustrates my point further, that sometimes when you're young things take a different a path than you were expecting and that can turn out to be for the best... So I should qualify what I meant by saying, it's not a good idea to get yourself into debt at college if you're not sure what you actually want to do with it.
I mean, if you want to study medicine, law or a STEM subject, and you're on the path to make it: college is right for you.
I actually did end up going back to university and got a bachelor's degree in nursing, but I hated doing it for work and now I work in theatre, which all happened because of volunteer work that made me some amazing connections. So my point was more about not wasting your time and learning about hard work, when I went back to uni I absolutely cruised through because I had some money to lean on and I was used to working 12hr days in the Australian desert.
I think if I went and studied music, like I'd originally planned, I'd have lost my passion for what I did in my spare time that over the last few years has ended up becoming what I do for my money now.
So yeah, what I mean is make the most of every opportunity and sometimes you don't know what's right until you look back in retrospect. But good for you, you found a different path when the one you thought you were on turned out not to be for you.

Spain's unemployment is high, and wages are relatively low. They make do with cheaper cars, so that might go some way to explaining the lesser enthusiast scene... Also, richer folk from Germany or perhaps the UK are closer to the alps, where the roads are also exceptional, without having to drive 1000 miles further to get to Spain....

The Lexus LS400 was available in 1990 with optional air suspension in the United States. They are not common as it was a costly option. The LS430 models of the 2000s also had it and those are more common than the older model.

To get a driving licence in Spain costs in the thousands of euros because you must do something like 40hrs min with an instructor and multiple pre tests. If you fail the actual test you need to go back and do the 40hrs one to one again. The licence is more expensive than a first car.

Also, ham does not go bad after 2 weeks, probably they told you this cause you would just buy more.
Jamon iberico, Prosciutto and so on, they don’t “rot” if kept properly.
Also Jamon Iberico has a higher fat percentage that acts as a natural barrier against elements, like mold or fungi.
You can keep it for months in a dark, dry basement, covered with a linen or cotton blanket.
It will just create a hard layer where you cut it first, you just remove that and it’s perfect.
It’s the whole point of “cured” meat, to be preserved longer without cooking it (even though it’s cooked by salt, air and long time)
In Italy we make our own cured meats in autumn/winter and we eat them all year long, even raw sausage cured inside a fat jar.
And Italy has some of the highest life expectancy, like top 3.
So no, we do not die eating meat.

Spaniard here!the reason of the lack of car culture in Spain is basically consecuence of our regulations.Even put a 2 inches bigger rimes in your car cost a fortune.Another reason could be that cars are really expensive in comparisson with EEUU,for example.Motorcycles on the other hand...They are cheap and every weekend(not in the middle of the week, when you where here) you can see A LOT of them in any canyon road. You can check the number of world titles that spanish riders have the last 25 years,Motogp,moto2,moto3...we have Toni Bou,who has 35 trial world titles and still in active!

9:12 Subaru aren't the best seller in Europe, but you seem them regularly. New Outbacks and Crosstreks, Levorgs. Miatas are sold for absolutely good money and you can see them too (also because we have them with 1.5 and 2.0 motors). But the thing is - in southern parts of Spain and Italy (for example) people mostly treat cars like washing machines. The will just have a random car to go back and forth. And a scooter to ride in the city.

Spain, Italy (where I’m from), also France.
Guys you don’t understand how hard it is for us to buy and maintain even cheap sports cars.
Probably you don’t realize that we pay taxes for everything.
    - ECO tax when you buy.
    - Registration tax.
    - Annual High power “super” tax, higher for new cars, drops 25% each 5 year timespan
    - Annual possession tax based on displacement and car age.
    - higher insurance for higher power cars
My Honda 2003 S2000 cost me 800€ when I bought it (on top of the price) 600€ per year just to own, almost 1500€ insurance per year to keep.
And all this for just 240hp.
Modern cars are easily 300+ and they cost a fortune.
You really have no idea how hard it is.

44:20 All LS400's and Celsiors have air-ride, as an option, from 1989 until 2000. However, it's pretty rare as take rates were pretty low and systems have only become rarer as they get retrofitted to standard shocks when they wear out. But I am 100% confident US cars have air suspension. Why? I own one.
As for fluid filled cabin fixture, I have no idea. I've never heard that term before working with technical and maintenance things, but it appears in all of the marketing material. I have no idea. I'm an expert in this car and I have no idea what it could mean. My best guess is maybe fluid engine mounts or some strut rod, but that's a strange way to say that.

Lexus incorporates these fixtures into various parts of the car, including the instrument panel, center console, and door trim panels. These fixtures contain a special fluid that helps to absorb and dampen vibrations that would otherwise travel through the car's chassis and into the cabin.

My friend works at Rolls Royce and he is a big Bill Mitchell fan, the Cadillac elements are there as another mutual friend has a beautiful '69 Elderado, other loves are John Lautner architecture. So the Royce might be British. But it's more GM in the late 60's early 70's and that should be appreciated by Americans as many car "enthusiasts" in the US hate these cars.

I do wonder though if there is a market for the old school landyachts that existed in the 70s and were actually not bad sellers.
Like surely with EV tech going forward we're bound to see more personal luxury coupe influenced cars, I reckon, for the masses if all a car will be is an indistinguishable pod

The similarities between the EVs now and Yank Tanks 50 years ago are there. If fuel usage and weight are not in the limiting factors then why wouldn't you just add more? Your question of GM, Ford or Stelantis going into the luxury sedan market? I don't think they have the separation to do it. BMW and VAG have taken years to separate the VW Phaeton and 7 series ( iX) from the Royce and Bentley. Mercedes should have the same with Maybach. The 300C was the example of where Chrysler rocked up in a suit when everyone else wore sweat pants. Sad that they only sell minivans at the moment. Let's hope they are bold enough to try

As to the question asked about an early 2000’s Bentley. It’s absolutely one of those cars that you buy “two” of, you buy the one you drive and the one you service. Now, I regularly deal with a 2007 Continental gtc that has 170,000 miles on the original engine and turbos. The engine is still running very strong and smooth. Matt is 100% correct that the infotainment screen is so outdated it’s almost unusable. Overall, if you have a good relationship with a mechanic who won’t bend you over a barrel, it’s worth it in my opinion

Only when you talk about luxury cars do you talk about how much it costs and how guilty you feel. You don't make that comment about all the supercars you drive - many of which are at least as expensive. In your Ferrari 812 video the as tested price was $474,000 and you said, "it's actually pretty reasonable considering what you get." Why is your perception of two vehicles that cost the same so different? Why does one make you feel guilty and the other one make you think it's good value?

The problem is that there is less and less proper car passion. Teenagers neglect the cars considering them only as the transportation as Zack mentioned or, there is a group of flashy, show-off-in-front-of the-disco enthusiasts. People in general look less and less for the good roads just to make a stretch. And imho there is no connection with the wealth. If there would have been a lot of passionate people they would have driven in the old cheap GTi cars. And check your younger family members' walls ... how often you see a car there? We are still in the shrinking minority. More exposed and consolidated thanks to the social media but still.
