A love letter to MADNESS: OP 2.2 and the STALKER Soup Mods

  • This video started as a pure review of Stalker OP 2.2 (aka ОП-2.2, Joint pack, Cumulative pack 2). It slowly morphed during the writing into a full history of the soup mods, from Narodnaya Solyanka, NS2016, all the different versions, OGSR ports, main addons, Stalkersoup and so on... until the first united pack (OP), through the release of OP2, until the latest version today, OP 2.2.
    In the end I cut most of the history part to focus more on OP2, the full history of the soup mods actually deserves a standalone video (maybe one day, when I have 6 months of free time to play most of them!).
    So this is just a love letter to OP 2.2, an insane, amazing, and very unique experience in the middle of the vast ocean of mods the STALKER community has to offer.
    ------
    You will find all the download links, install guide and all the help you need to get started with the mod on the amazing wiki:
    op-2.fandom.co...
    Much more info, addons, help, tutorials etc.. will come in the starter guide video, I'm working on it as we speak!

    Never ask a western youtuber to do a souplike walkthrough, it's an endeavor many have tried in the past and failed. Legends like OCedmyToaster have even vanished off the face of the internet while attempting it, never to return.
    This months long commitment can break even the strongest stalkers in their attempt to record it. It is a spirit-breaking undertaking for those without slavjank in their bloodstream.

    Haven't finished the video yet, but still wanna make a "no one asked comment". So the OG Soup Mod (Narodnaya Solyanka) is called that way because solyanka is a name of the russian soup that's famous for including basically whatever meat you've got. Usually it's a little bit of sausages, ham, pork, beef and whatever else (except fish) with vegetables, tomato paste, pickles and olives.
    Yeah it sounds weird but I love when my grandma makes it cuz it tastes awesome. Kind of time consuming tho.

    Despite your reservations, 11:29 is a surprisingly apt description of the modpack. No matter how impossible any given situation seems, there's always multiple strategies or tools that will lead you to victory. OP encounters can often feel more like a puzzle where you need to understand all of the moving parts rather than a shooter, so resourceful people who aren't necessarily FPS gods can thrive playing it.
    Thanks for the shoutout to the wiki contributors too. It's incredibly rewarding to see more people slowly get into OP over time, but even more rewarding to see the dedicated few who can reach the endings.

    • @sebastianpost7237
      @sebastianpost7237 6 месяцев назад

      Combat encounters that are more than just twitch aiming click-on-the-head Shlock?
      As in you actually have to slow down, plan out and execute a strategy to win?
      It isn’t just stacking all DPS items and just running that for the entire play-through?
      Holy fucking shit, what a breath of fresh air, I’m jumping off of anomaly for this.

    • @mugwort1
      @mugwort1 6 месяцев назад

      @@sebastianpost7237 Of course the vast majority of encounters are simple world spawns and most combat can be won by baiting enemies into your field of view like in most stalker mods, but the most bullshit setpiece encounters will definitely need some kind of strategy unless you're fully kitted out. A good early example is (slight spoilers) the two-pronged ambushes in the Wild Territory burner tunnel, which have many methods to fight out or escape to a better vantage point. Another good example is the large-scale military invasion of Jupiter, where over 80 soldiers start slowly converging on your position and your escape routes are cut off by a certain emplacement.
      On the whole OP's weapon and tool variety serves a good purpose since the actual variety of encounters is pretty wide, and you'll probably be updating and upgrading your loadout constantly. The moment when you really become an OP addict is when you come up with a unique cheese method for a hard quest that you've never seen anyone mention or use before.

    • @dawidotocki3274
      @dawidotocki3274 6 месяцев назад

      @@sebastianpost7237 It's all true, there are lots of "unusual" encounters in this mod which just having a really good rifle simply won't cut it. You'll sometimes also need additional equipment, like grenades, embryos, turret or even some specialist weapons like RPG-7 to take down a flock of helicopters, BTRs or some powerful mutants which otherwise would eat your entire ammo reserve. There are no "best in slot" weapons in this mod, there is not a single weapon which you'll use for the entirety of playthrough. There are some really good weapons out there which you'll stash and switch around once the ammo in the one you're currently using runs out.
      Fun fact, in most of the mods Gauss rifle is considered end game gun, while in OP 2.2 it's early game, low tier gun, which you obtain in the same amount of hours you would obtain in vanilla Shadow of Chernobyl. There are simply way better guns out there.

    Hah you just barely made it into the mod.
    I finished this mod 2 years ago, with around 450-500 hours.
    With the Nightmare difficulty, and yes that's gonna give you an Achievement for that too.
    It was one of the best mod that I've ever played.
    It is junky, unfair, unblanaced as you said, but in the END you will get the upper hand, and you will rule the Zone, and you will become a God.
    There are a lot of quests, mission, searching for stashes that if you don't use a Wi-Ki for it or help, you would never guessed it.
    Sometimes it was so bad, that I had a 2 week pause from it.
    Sometimes it just kept me pushing to finish it.
    Very interesting mod, and it is nice to have a Voice actor for Strelok.
    But no more spoiler.
    Everybody has to try it at least once.

    There is "mod pack lsc" which makes the op2.2 game much more playable, like no more 9000+ lvl zombies and many qol improvements you can select from game options but it comes at a cost - english translation doesn't work, it works partially and then you get lines and lines of blank dialogue even some game options are blank, you have to know Russian to play it and some quests may be bugged or moded out (very few) also zombie models get tons of freaky updates like tourist zombies with votka bottles... Which actually drop votka bottles as loot. Cumulative insanity!

    To be completely honest, I'm a fan of new maps.
    I have a STALKER role-playing game that I've been writing for a few years, and I wanted to create a much more complete, huge and interesting Zone.
    A Zone so big that my players will get lost in it, as if it were a devil's labyrinth.
    Besides, I like long mods, especially when I already know STALKER from top to bottom because I have a very good memory.
    And I like OP 2.2 better than SOPA, because it is more stable and with slightly better graphics.
    BUT.... it has the same problems as SOPA, that all the main characters, give you important missions here and there, which makes that if the character is killed, or for X reason you become enemies with that character, you can't do the missions that he could offer you, and some of these missions are ESSENTIAL to complete other specific missions later on.
    And I hate it.
    Out of habit, I used to kill the military under the bridge, because I always found it difficult to pass through there paying the toll.
    So in this mod, it was one of the first things I did, especially when the character treated me very kindly.
    That's it, it's on my blacklist.
    Eventually, it happens that muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch more missions later on, some of the missions it gives you are special missions to upgrade some equipment.
    Another mission occurs with the camera.
    I have an annoying mission to photograph mutants with their backs turned, in peaceful mode.
    Not only is sneaking up behind a dangerous mutant difficult, but 90% of the photos you take won't work, because you have to take the photo at a very specific and detailed angle.
    To help you in this, you can upgrade the camera with a technician, but it happens that this upgrade will not be available if you don't do another one of those long and tedious missions, also difficult to accomplish.
    This mod started out fun, but eventually stopped being fun.
    Every now and then, I had to abuse the Invulnerability, and the secret menu giving me items.
    Even by cheating and getting the best possible equipment and weapons, the mod was still difficult.
    Because even on the lowest difficulty, the enemies kill you with a single shot to the head, or abuse the grenade launchers, which, by the way, make bandages and first aid kits completely useless.
    To all this, with missions impossible to complete by killing a certain character or by not doing a certain mission that I should have done later, I had to revert the save like 50 missions back, to complete well that mission that I did wrong or that I did not do, and then have to replay those same 50 missions over and over again.
    From this, I quit the game the 6th time, because I killed Lukash and several of Freedom guys.
    And in Shadow... there was always the possibility of helping Duty and destroying Freedom's base, which I always did not because I hated Freedom, but because with so many dead characters, I could loot them and keep everything.
    In the end, you come to the conclusion that in this mod you have to get along with everyone and even protect everyone, lest another NPC kill that essential NPC... as it happened to me 8 times.
    Even in one of the games, I had to go back several times, because one of the members of Duty in the Bar, for some strange reason, saw me as an enemy, making it impossible for me to approach the Bar, or do so in a way not to cross him.
    And I couldn't kill him either, because we were inside Deber's territory, and the Bar... killing him meant turning all Deber and other stalkers against me.

    After playing this mod for 3 hours I can safely say once and for all, DO NOT play this mod if you value your time, sanity and happiness. I don't think I could call this "mod" a video game, it feels more like a torture device than anything else. In 3 hours, the game crashed 4 times, I died 50 times and I managed to break the game by making an important NPC attack me for no clear reason, forcing me to kill him, I hadn't even left cordon yet, that's how ridiculous this mod is. I think the only way to enjoy this mod is by drinking yourself numb or smoking crack while playing, and I mean it.
    EDIT: Despite all i've said, some unknown force kept me coming to the mod and i've clocked in a couple more hours. I think I already have contracted the brainrot, sanity and happiness are meaningless to me, now there's is only SOUP.

    There was a russian modder, living in Germany, who made a Soljanka for the german version of SoC, and I have to say ... it was a great experience, hard like almost impossible, like, to kill bloodsuckers you had to use your knife, and you started as Monolith in the CNPP, first mission: clear out mutants ... mostly bloodsuckers, second mission: kill some outsiders ... with only your AK-74, some bullets and they got godlike aim. Next mission was to kick out mercenaries out of the Monolith base in Pripyat ... almost impossible too. But once you got over these things, it became a great mod selection. And all those great new maps that were added ... hell.
    Oh, and it's a blessing if you speak russian and get along with all these Soup things, some are really great, and yes, extremely mad. But that's just basically the russian mentality, it's crazy, =)

    I wouldnt really call it Slav Culture to just blow a Game up with Mods. In the early Days of game modding, it was fairly common in pretty much any Game that supported Modding. For Example if you go all the Way back to early Fallout 3 Modding, you will find many western Playtroughs with People that just blazed their Games to the Moon with all Kinds of Shit to a point where they dont even remember most of the Stuff they added.

      I would have to disagree with you, many people from all over the world play stalker, which leads to different communities of players from different countries. There is a clear difference between the Western and Russian/Eastern modding community. You probably haven't even heard of OP before watching Cheeki's video and I don't blame you. Try to compare Gamma and OP. They're wildly different in terms mechanics and graphics. What Western modpack have you seen add the same crazy shit OP does? That's the "Slav Culture" OP adds a bunch of crazy unintuitive mods together and builds it on top of Narodnaya Solyanka. Many Russian mods are like this I.E Reborn Doppelgänger, NLC 7, AlternativA, etc.

      @@touhoumomo It seems you didnt really read my Comment, i've been on RUclips for close to 16 years at this Point, and have been watching Gaming Videos since i was a little Kid before Lets Plays even became a Thing, and i remember my earliest Stalker Video that i've seen was around 2010, if not even earlier. And i also knew the Stalker Soup Mods from even before i graduated, which was in 2013.
      That being said, this Type of Modding, again, is not exclusive to Stalker. It was pretty normal to do this before Modding became more streamlined, because except the small Base of skilled Mod Creators, noone really knew what they were doing and just threw in whatever had a good Title. And how actually hard it is to play stalker for non russian i can't imagine
      Especially op 2.2, it's almost unreal even for russian speaker to complete it 100% because how buged and broken it sometimes is, and not every time there is a solution for the problem you might stumble upon
      That's crazy, hope only best for you and your channel

    Hello there and friendly greetings!
    THIS! This is what I totally love!! The Zone is a madness and I think (I am still downloading it) this standalone is the perfect modpack! Thanks for sharing! Do you think you could make a series out of it?

  • @ariannanightingale4054
    @ariannanightingale4054 6 месяцев назад

    In my opinion, these mods are pure, undilluted suffering. A tremendous amount of time (and you're gonna regret not checking the wiki because the consumable that you used 100 saves ago was both rare and vital for one questline. YOU'LL REGRET THIS) it requires, difficulty and madness combined make it a very unique experience. HOWEVER:
    I think that guns aren't peashooters (even the worst ones at the start), every single location contains more unique characters than entire Anomaly and quests are at least unique and rewarding. If anyone is into more atmosphere and less chaos I'd advise NLC 7. Though very slow movement speed at the beginning stage is a pain in the ass.

    What upsets me about this mod (nitpick I know) is that the truck cemetery is clearly on the map to the west but it doesn't seem like you can go to it. I know it likes to crash on other mods but still would love to go there.

    cool to see this mod getting more attention 👍 i've noticed more people are getting into recently and im sure this video will help with that
    i think it'd be cool to see an update/part 2 video on your thoughts when you either finish the mod/decide you've had enough of it. its not often you get to hear peoples experiences of the later game stuff, not only are the quests themselves much different but your whole outlook of the gameworld changes in my experience.

    The true endgame of Stalker Modding . Still i'm glad stuff lime OP 2.2 and Soup mods never got popular in the west . If you thought Anomaly modpack people were bad I can't even imagine what zoomer brain-rot meme fueled hell would be plaguing the community if SOUP was face of STALKER modding .

    I played Stalkersoup as far as they have it finished, I'm glad it doesn't log your hours I'm sure it's in the hundreds. It consumed all of my free time for months on end and I would get pissed off at it and quit for a few weeks and then resume playing. You are right , there is something about these mods that that makes you keep coming back even after you quit in frustration. Soup has a nice forum and a several hundred page pdf guide and a couple of quests are broken (you have to use the console to finish them), but I enjoyed playing it. OP looks like its even better. I have it installed and ready to start if I can tear myself away from Morrowind. Great channel, love your vids. Thanks

    I quit op 2.2 about 2 weeks ago now, I really didn't like the mod. I get soup mods aren't made for balance and are just quantity over quality, but come on, I'm getting 1 tapped by PM's while wearing an exoskeleton, there is not even a resemblance of balance in the mod. Lots of cool things are present in the mod which I love, but the deal breaker for me was the amount of accessible maps. When you play the game and open the PDA, you will see a world with like 40 locations, but in reality, only 27 are accessible cuz the rest were implemented by the devs as an after thought but they were never fully added to the game, so now you have a half completed world map. I would complain about the sheer amount of enemy spam this mod throws at you but I get that's the appeal, so it's not a valid point to hate the mod for, still doesn't change the fact it wasn't very enjoyable, good luck with your playthrough!

    • @touhoumomo

      skill issue, don't get shot, no seriously the beginning parts of OP is really hard but once you get over the initial difficulty its more of a test of your patience but yeah OP isn't for everyone

    • @kingsonxd8348
      @kingsonxd8348 6 месяцев назад +1

      What's the point of armor except carry weight then? On master difficulty, no matter what armor you wear you get one shot by anything, that's not balanced or fun. The sense of progression is nullified then I can wear a veteran stalker suit through the whole game and have the same experience even if i changed suits. I like difficulty but it has to be fair to be enjoyable

      You gotta lot in your zone beyond this then! Story mods like RTTZ and other such experiences are right up your alley. Op2.2 though definitely gets harder than something like gamma after you get into double digit hours
