Awesome to see Matt Adler finally come out of hibernation to talk about one of the best cult classic movies he was in! It is a cult classic and he should embrace it by watching his reaction in the last 45 seconds on the video. I am a huge fan of the movie. Have it on DVD and seen it many times. I never tire of it. Go North Shore even following Turtle and the pages on Instagram 🥰🌊🌊🏄♂️
Lights out fantastic, fun movie. i had to have watched it 50+ times as a kid. I wish Netflix or Prime Video would put it back on their service. I’d love to show it to my kids.
When North Shore came out, I was 12 years old. I must of watched the movie 100 times. After watching the movie again recently on my iPad, through the eyes of an adult living in NYC, I understood the deeper meaning of the film, it’s message, and how the story was told. The film is about how evil of materialistic and capitalistic culture of the west has displaced the indigenous people of the island by means of exploitation of its natural resources for profit at the expense of the indigenous people. And how the sport of Professional Surfing exploits the island’s most valuable natural resources, it’s beautiful ocean. The professional surfers are pawns of Big Corporations, with the waves as it’s backdrop. The message-the chaser of dreams -fame, money, sex, have to sell their souls as we see in character of Burkhart, who use the natural resource, the wave, as means to satisfy the appetite of the beast, by carving up the wave to put on a show. The soul surfers ride in harmony with the wave because of their understanding of its nature. Because of this, they have the skill to out compete any of the pro surfers, but choose not to. We see this in shot with character Vince, the leader of the Hui, and referee of the contest, who catches a perfect wave and perfect ride, who although can have the riches which come from using that skill, chooses to live off the land- as we see in scene where the Hui are hunting boar. For Rick Kane, the loss from theft of the proceeds of the Arizona contest, to chase his dream, gives him an opportunity to grow spiritually and realize that true success is not measured by how much money a person makes but by the depth of his soul and his respect for nature.
I've seen this movie more than 20 times here in Brazil. I love the movie since I was a kid and just watched again on Netflix. The movie is amazing and I'm not a surfer, but it almost feel like I could understand the emotion. The movie makes me surf in my mind. Thanks for that great classic! Marco, from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
savoir777faire I read Gerry Lopez (Vince) book recently, so good. It’d be cool to have him in there as an old guy. Could have Rick and Kiani’s kid and Chandlers kids be characters. Chandler is dead and Turtle has become the new Chandler type character but still has his goofiness a bit lol.
savoir777faire or we could go a different route and have it just pick up a year or a couple years later. Rick found out he could still surf living in NYC Jersey, Long Island.) so he comes back to the North Shore then.
Brian Winters please don’t hate me for this but I’m thinking I want to pair Turtle with Kiani together this time because Rick didn’t go back to Kiani because of his mother getting sick so he had to take care of her and as time went on Rick didn’t go back and that’s when Turtle and Kiani got together.
Matt's been pretty much out of the loop the last 3 decades (haven't heard or seen him since '90). I believe this is the first time he's ever sat down to give an interview on the flick.
Love it! It’s the Karate Kid of surfing. Chandler is the Hawaiian Mr. Miagi.
Exactly
Haha great comment! Never thought of it that way, now we just need a follow up Covra Kai style on Netflix!
@@dolbyderringer2225 That would be interesting!
