This movie came out at the right time. Surf brands were huge in high school such as Maui and Sons, T &C surf, Quiksilver, Hawaiian Island Creations to name few.
Aw man my friends and I wore out the VHS tape cause we watched this movie so many times! I grew up in South Florida where we didn't have big waves but would pretend to be these guys when we went to the beach. Good times!
When Laird Hamilton says that Surfing is a "difficult sport to master" (which it most certainly is) you know that's saying a lot... especially from such an accomplished athlete like him.
I saw it (several) hundreds of times as a 14 years old growing up in the Caribbean, and I know every words of it ...and I was drawn to surfing (partly) through this film indeed !!
The casting was phenomenal. So many actual legends in the movie and it didn’t take away from acting quality. I can’t think of another movie that even comes close in that respect.
Laird looked like the Hulk in North Shore. Him and Kelly Slater probably the best surfers\watermen of the modern era. I know this interview is pretty old but still interesting
I am a cult follower. I rented that movie so many times I finally talked the video store into just selling it to me. I still have it. Love it and watching soul surfer.
North Shore is on DVD. I got it online. The surf movie that set the standard is The Endless Summer. It's more documentary than Hollywood fiction but went mainstream at the time because it is that good. Bruce Brown was a master and made this masterpiece that is a significant landmark in surf film history and surf history. It focuses mostly on the fun, sometimes funny, light-hearted lifestyle, but does get intense when covering the North Shore as it must. Paraphrasing Bruce, "follow the summer around the world in the search for the perfect wave."
The last comment by Laird is so true. North Shore the movie far out plays and out lasts any all singing and dancing surf odyssey movies by a very long way. It's a film about life not just waves.
I picked up on surfing after this epic legendary film! I was obsessed with the culture? Yellow Shark watches! T&C tshirts! Lol…..the babes….it was the skaters versus the surfers, here in Malibu…then we merged…lol..but….the locals only s*** was real af! Early 90’s was the greatest time to be a teen….North Shore was my Bible ….I learned from Chandler… I learned the respect you get is the respect you give……the drive of Rick Kane…the loyalty and underestimated shaper Turtle getting the recognition he deserves….the kindness of Chandlers wife….the pure and beautiful Kianna…..the cocky hotdogger but legend Laird Hamilton ! I knew soooo many dudes like that! Shout out to Christian Fletcher who I cut off in Huntington Beach and he was cool at….told him I had him and The Ho bros along with Kelly Slate4 and Laird on my wall…level new Surf nag I cut em up! Lol……..fu**ing 80’s ! So rad! …….everything today sucks! Listen to Turtle! Lates!
The upload date says 1 year ago. Is this interview really not that old? Or is this older footage just recently uploaded? If it is new footage, that is awesome that they are still talking about the movie.. I would love a sequel
Hey bud you were perfect for this role .I grew up in 80’s with this movie . It wasFast Times or North Shore . God bless youLaird as I love you brother , but I hate Lance Burkheart

Do you remember the T shirt BA surf stuff? It was a guy skating or surfing, always with his ass hanging out. Probably mid 80's.
He’s so right. Either you never saw the film, or you’ve seen it 100 times. I have seen it 100 times😂😂

The man is a surfing AND acting GIANT!
Laird is what I would be if I could be.
Laird was already a beast physically in 1987!

“We know who really won, Burkhart.”
This was filmed well before 2019; 4:3 aspect ratio. Love the *North Shore*. Always quoting lines while surfing, driving to surf, at work, wherever.
Seen it at least 100 times. No exaggeration
The ocean takes so many souls it’ll make you sick if you shouldn’t be out there.
