John was awesome as Turtle. It raises a good question. Who else could have played Turtle well. Sean Penn would've been a great Turtle. He nailed Spicoli. Turtle woulda been higha and they woulda had to hire Van Halen to Rock Turtle's B-day gig.
Really funny backstory. Brian King was in the credits as the island coordinator. HE is Turtle but never liked to be called that. He ended up somehow in NYC in the 90's and was the head judge for the ESA eastern surfing association for the ny area. I can't even begin to tell you the crazy stories that happened back then as he is a pretty private guy. But I basically felt like I was living in what could have been the sequel to North Shore
I totally agree. Turtle was so much more than merely “the guy” who introduced our main characters. He was the quintessential foreign local guy to which all us haole’s could relate. So glad that he had a much larger role in the film and a rewarding story arc. Kudos, John!!!
Love this movie, my friends and I watched it and quoted it all the time growing up in the 80s. Watching the movie again for the first time in 20 yrs, I had to laugh at the line "chandler you still have a single fin mentality" because my friend used to say that all the time. Turtle, you rock!
You know your a Loc when you are representing a Dick Brewer surfboard in the background . Dick is a Legend (much Love and respect from the Mainland San Diego California!
Thanks for posting these interviews. Respect to the Hui Loved North Shore since it came out and my most watched movie (we're talking hundreds of times). Total bucket list item: learn the basics of surfing. In early March this year, a week before the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, I took a lesson from John in Malibu (pure luck with timing). He's the chillest person, loves life and surfing. I have snowboarding and skating experience, but John coached me to ride waves. Forever grateful for that experience 🤙🕶️🏄
It’s just awesome to see how the movie characters have been impacted for being part of the movie as well as impacted us for watching it. Thanks for sharing this
About 2 decades ago, I worked in an AWESOME Historical Surf/Dive Shop located ON the beach in Hale'iwa. One winter season, the surf was goin' off! Was a bunch of folks outside waiting for our doors to open which was 9am. Amongst the folks was Mr. Philbin. He came in to buy a bar of sex wax. I was a cashier that morning, he placed $1 on the counter (that's how much it was, probably still is lol) and said, "Mahalo" and he smiled. I said, "Eyyy, Turrrtle" he replied back, "Ey, don't call me that!" I said, "But, that's your name!" He replied back and said, "OK, you can call me Turtle" and gave me a "Brah Handshake" -- I seen him maybe about 4x after that for the 9 years I was there. MISS that shop! Super COOL guy!!! ~ Aloha nui loa❤️🐢🌊🤙🤙🤙
Watched that movie over and over again as a kid til I basically wore the tape out. One of my favorite movies of all time. And Turtle was my favorite character.
Man…I rented this movie back in 87. The video store closed down before I could return it. So, I’ve had my VHS copy since then. Watched it a zillion times. Showed it to everyone. I quote Turtle so much that don’t even realize I’m doing it anymore. I still call the kooks in my world “Barney” or “barno.” Then I say that I can tell they are lame by the way they wear their shorts. Freakin’ hysterical to only me. But, I don’t care. It makes me laugh. Freakin’ Turtle!
It cannot be overstated, how good this movie is. They don’t movies like this anymore. On top of being entertaining, they teach life lessons that today’s woke garbage never can. Thank you Turtle, Rick, Chandler, and the rest
Love you turtle... But that surfing lexicon lingo you're talking about. We've been saying that s*** since 1972...and a lot of the other words were strictly Hawaiian that I didn't learn till I got to Hawaii. In 1978! But the word Barney has been around a long time. And I invite you to come down to San elijo Cardiff in North San Diego. And surf at Barneys! And this has been called that since everyone can remember. And guess what's next to Barney's? Turtles! These have retained their names since the '60s... We need another surf movie with a real plot. North shore was great. I have scripts in my head and actually on paper.
John. Please make "North Shore II". Here's an idea: Rick has a love child with lani but did not know. Lani didn't tell him coz she didn't want to ruin his career as an artist
That was the weirdest role in the history of American film-making.. This isn't a criticism. I was just always wondering..what the fahk..was wrong with that guy..?!

Should have won a academy award for his performance.
No one could have played Turtle as well as John Philbin. He IS Turtle and will always be Turtle as far as I’m concerned!
Agree 100%!
