I'd like to see Robert Carlyle in more horror, hes fantastic in Ravenous and 28 Weeks Later. I know he's retired now, but Lee Evans would be good in horror, he was in a movie called Freeze Frame were he played a really creepy character. Comedians tend to do creepy really well, like Robin Williams in One Hour Photo.
I agree with you about Robert Carlyle. I’ll check out Freeze Frame - that sounds really interesting. Robin Williams was amazing in One Hour Photo. Thanks for watching!
Cool idea for a video topic, Bryn. As an actor in a previous life, I can attest that actors who can handle Comedy, are very often great dramatic actors. But the reverse is most often not true. Comedy is harder. Jim Carrey is what I call a Gifted Mechanic. A physical performer. I hear that he was much more restrained in The Majestic, but I've never seen it. But best remark about Bette Davis is she was not really beautiful. But she was such a great actress that she convinced you she was beautiful. She always creeped me out. John Candy did a character called Dr Tongue in the 3-D House of...it would be a different theme. I could see him playing that character straight to chilling effect aka Dr. Cyclops of the original Puppet People film. Ewwwe...SCARY. Oops. That's Count Floyd. I thought choosing John Wayne was inspired. He did several dramas and I could see him in something like the 1963 psycho supernatural suspense thriller The Haunting. I'm a big John Wayne fan and have many of his films. He could be quite hard and possessed as his character was in The Searchers.
Thank you, Tony! That's very interesting about comedy being harder to do. Bette Davis convincing you she was beautiful - what a poignant analysis! I think John Wayne really could have brought some weight to a low budget 60s/70s horror film. Thanks for the comment!
John Candy was the original choice for Luis Tully in Ghostbusters, I can't remember why he didn't do it in the end, but the original hand drawn storyboards as seen in the DVD extras are of John Candy in that role.
Fun exercise! Your mentioning Bette Davis has me wondering again what “Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte” would have been like if Joan Crawford had gone through with it. Hard to top how really terrifying Olivia de Havilland is when the sugary mask comes off!
This is a great video, great topic! I can just imagine John Wayne is Them! or any version of The Thing. Ever since seeing John Candy in the massively underrated Nothing But Trouble, I've thought he would have made a fantastic horror icon. And the one actor I really could see in horror roles was/is the great Robin Williams. He was really terrifying in One Hour Photo. Great video!
Thanks, Jack. John Wayne would have been amazing in either of those movies. I need to see Nothing But Trouble. I agree, Robin Williams was fantastic in One Hour Photo.
Very interesting subject for a video, Bryn. Some great choices there. Here are a few of mine: Roy Castle (fantastic in the voodoo segment of Dr Terror's House of Horrors); Roger Moore (awesome in the eerie doppelganger chiller The Man Who Haunted Himself); Barry Foster (just terrifying in the role of seial killer Robert Rusk in Frenzy); even David Jason would be good in a fright flick, as he has played some pretty serious roles in his long, illustrious career, most notably Inspector Jack Frost. Great video, Bryn. Really enjoyed watching.
Thanks Bryn. Yeah, TMWHH definitely was one of Roger Moore's favourite roles, if not his SPECIAL favourite of all. Such an underrated movie that should have done much better at the box office than it actually did.
I’ll check out Frankie Howard. I never heard of him. Interesting thoughts! Bettie Davis was great. She should have done more horror. She was creepy sometimes. John Candy looked creepy as Dr Tongue on SCTV lol! Awesome Canadian comedy show. Joe Flaherty played a vampire. 3D House of pancakes. Yeah, he would have been interesting in serious horror. Cagney too. Jack Nicholson in the shining was influenced by Cagney methinks. Great vid!

Yes, he did do several horror flicks, some of which are now considered essential classics but as long as his career lasted, proportionately speaking, I think he should have been in so many more. Darren McGavin. He wasn't exactly a stranger to the genre but again, so few works done within the genre. Patrick McGoohan. Such a brilliant actor. He could do well in any genre. Barry Morse. Another fantastic actor. A lot of missed opportunities with him. Leo McKern. All these years I had thought he was British and here I find out he was Australian. What amazing talent! I think he had a lot of people fooled! A talent that would have been well spent on more horror. And Martin Landau. He proved that he could do horror. Most of the time when he did, it was combined with sci-fi which is cool. But alas again, his horror works were few and far between.
Fantastic suggestions there - thank you! I could have sworn I saw Leo McKern in a horror film but can't find anything when I look. Check out Martin Landau in Without Warning, if you haven't already seen it :)
