I used to have a movie poster of Planes Trains & Automobiles on my dorm room ceiling. I'm 53 now and just watched it on a plane home... my daughter looking at me every time I laughed out loud. This movie and these actors just mean a lot to me. They are one of a kind.
John Candy was phenomenal in JFK, a rare dramatic role for him and he excelled in it-The film came out the year I was born (1991). Trains, Planes and Automobiles will forever be an all time classic...R.I.P John 🙏🏽
The final scene of Trains, Planes and Automobiles was filmed in the home next to my parent's home. By the time they filmed the scene it was very warm (it was a generally warm winter) and they had to make snow for the scene where they drag the trunk down the street and up to the house. During the filming my Father was out in the yard getting his garden ready for the season when John Candy came through the yard using the well worn shortcut in order to get to the house where the filming took place. Candy stopped and talked to my Dad for a long time about the neighborhood and the schools, Dad said he had no idea that Candy was an actor, for starters because he was so nice! My Dad finally realized that he had been talking to a star when some neighborhood kids ran into the yard to get an autograph, which John Candy kindly obliged.
I read somewhere that John was so kind--he'd often buy everyone on the set lunch or dinner. He treated people with the utmost respect. So much of his personality was projected into his screen characters. The last five minutes of PLANES, TRAINS, & AUTOMOBILES is phenomenal.
@@salanderfication yes,it is unfortunate. I heard wrong, he cooked a lasagna dinner for his assistants the night he passed away. I would venture he probably made the dinner first. And yes it was while the movie was still in production.

That final shot in Uncle Buck, John Candy with that totally sincere smile and the little wave to his niece that freezes. Just a wonderful shot that is so touching, to me at least.
John Candy told Catherine O'Hara in a phone conversation before he went to Durango, Mexico to film Wagons East that he had a premonition that something bad was going to happen; he just didn't know it was going to happen to him. RIP John. Your adoring fans miss you.
Well Candy was obese and used drugs and alcohol so it was only a matter of time before something bad happened to him .. very funny guy though and I Miss him and John Hughes
I watch this movie every thanksgiving for about 15 years. It’s tradition. I love it so much. The talent, the comedy, and the heartfelt moments were palpable.
Planes,Trains and Automobiles to this day is my favorite holiday movie. What I loved is how funny the movie was while also telling a touching story about compassion and helping your fellow man. In my opinion, this is the type of movie you want your kids watching because it teaches them to be kind to others because you never know what someone is going through.
Brothers from a different mother 💕 I love the fact that John's wife and Steve were/are there for each other. These two men were meant to be in each other's lives, I can imagine the deep loss, its much easier when surrounded by others with the same connection, same loss 💗 🙏🏼 I'm glad I found this, two of my very favorites!
@FactsVerse I love videos like this with Steven Martin & John Candy. Everything positive, I love reading about the good people among us, doesn't have to be celebrities but we all love it when they connect like John & Steve did, thank you for this video ❤️
I was living in Woodstock, Illinois when and where much of Planes,Trains, and Automobiles was filmed. One day when I was pushing my youngest child in a stroller down to the town square where some of the filming was taking place. Suddenly, a trailer door and out came Martin and Candy to much applause. John Candy was exactly like his characters. Steve Martin, on the other hand, was friendly but rather shy. It was a thrill to see these two together on screen and off.
I was at a football game between my hometown Hamilton Tiger-Cats and John Candy's Toronto Argonauts. Though he could have sat in the press box out of the reach of the fans, he sat right there among us. And when a security guard tried to tell one eager fan to go away, Candy stopped him and invited the man to come and shake hands with him, and spoke to him for several minutes. No matter how big he was, he never forgot who he was or where he came from. That is my fondest memory of John Candy.
John, Candy and Steve Martin were hilarious apart or together. I went to see this movie when it came to the movie theater in my day. We were all about Steve Martin and John Candy. They were truly the wild and crazy guys. Thanks guys we appreciate all you did.
One of my favorite movies! I watched 2 weeks ago, it never gets old. Train station scene always makes drop a tear. That scene is too powerful. I watch this movie every year, sometimes twice a year. Rip Big John Candy 😢
I love that movie and John was so good in it. It was hilarious and touched my heart deeply. When Steve Martin goes back to the train station and asked why he was still there it touched my. Then they're carrying that huge trunk was so touching. The ending was so perfect.
Everything ive ever read, seen and heard about John Candy confirms to me that it would have been impossible not to have a great time working with him. Steve Martin was truly privileged to have spent time working with him. I still miss the guy 👍
My sister used to live next to john candy in Newmarket Ontario. Think around his sctv days. She said he was just a normal guy and very friendly. I alway wished i made and effort to say hi to him when i was visiting my sister. Planes trains automobiles always makes me laugh and cry. Uncle buck does the same. Fans still miss you.
John Candy was one of my favorite actors because a little of his heart and humanity was in every part he ever played there is a new documentary being produced.
The scene of Candy jamming to Ray Charles' is the best especially the moment where he plays the piano on the dash. Martin had to keep his eyes closed because he would've laughed and ruined the take.
I love Steve Martin. I think he is the finest comic actor of his generation and sounds like he is a sound man too. Sad to loose John Candy so soon, may he rest in peace
It's too bad they didn't get another pairing in another movie (not a sequel P.T.A is perfect as is). They worked so well together. Either could play the straight man and the other the goof. So glad Martin is pairing with Short lately. Love the classic SNL/SCTV pairings.
I have to say, if there was one celebrity I could meet and just have lunch, talk about life with for maybe an hour; it would have been John Candy. A brilliant talent and wonderful man. Left us too soon. You are missed. 🙌 💜
I've watched various clips of this movie again and again. The clip that made me watch the most was the last five minutes of the movie: the emotional farewell and the ultimate celebration of a newfound friendship. Epic scene!
I loved John Candy's voice work in The Rescuers Down Under. Such energy and life, far surpassing any of the other characters. But then, that was John Candy for you.

I was heartbroken when john passed on he was a comedy legend, only the lonely Is one of my favorite movies It shows john could do comedy and more serious roles, gone but never forgotten Mr. candy.
Other accounts say Steve Martin did some writing for the film but there wasn't much improvisation. I have the screenplay draft with ehich they went into production. "Those aren't pillows" was written, and what they say after jumping out of bed was improvised.
Another Candy movie filmed up here in suburban Buffalo was Canadian Bacon. True story; My father, a now retired sheriff’s deputy, was asked to be an extra in that movie, turned it down, & to this day is mad at himself for having passed that chance!!

I *finally* got to see this movie and just LOVED it. The trials Steve Martin's character goes through makes you realize your troubles in trying to enjoy a holiday with family are really little to gripe about. And it has a great, poignant revelation and resolution at the end that is superbly heartwarming. Both Martin and Candy are superb in their performances, which have much more range than you might think before seeing the movie. Planes Trains and Automobiles was film No. 7 on the Humanities Film Forum Must See List. They also published a movie review, that now exists in a chopped down version. Planes.. has more than one released version with alternate scenes included, to shorten the show.
Uncle Buck after the scene with the Principal, your jacked by the music as he leaves the school. then after he lights his dart he goes the wrong way. classic candy the suttle funny stuff becomes hilarious.

John Candy made every comedy he touched better. Lead, supporting or cameo, if John Candy showed up, your film got at least a little funnier.
