My grandmother worked in Hollywood back in the sixties as a drama coach, dancer, actor, and singer and Danny Kaye became her boss at one point. She still tells many wonderful stories of memories she has of talking with him and watching him perform along with a handful of other special well-known entertainers. She especially loves telling of the encouraging advice he gave her one time when she was trying to decide what to do with her career. Because she listened to his advice, she ended up moving to the town where she happened to meet my grandfather for the first time, and not too long after, my dad came to be. Her realizing how special having a family could be and still have a talented career was something I knew she treasured learning through it all. I always found that fascinating. I have always felt a special connection to Danny Kaye through her while growing up, watching every movie of his, enjoying his comedy acts, and listening to his songs and audio stories (the stories for children in particular) for hours on end, even though he passed away ten years before I was born. And of course, hearing some behind the scenes from my grandmother regarding many of those things was an exciting addition to it all, not to mention her teaching me to act, dance, and sing and pointing me toward many of these wonderful performers as inspiration. He was an absolute legend, and there will never be another Danny Kaye.
Very interesting, thank you so much for sharing your grandmother's life story--much appreciated! We're very happy to know that she had a chance to work with Danny.

@davedee4382 So Hans Christian Andersen is suddenly a movie character and not a prolific European Children's Author. Then I guess the original Little Mermaid story don't exist in real life to ya then. Don't it?
He's one of those greats that today's entertainers would be hard to match up to: film, stage and television. I grew up watching his television shows and his movies, even whenever they were shown on television, it was always amazing to see his talent. He could sing, dance, comedy and drama that were amazing. Granted that there were other multi-talented entertainers of his generation at the time, it's hard to believe that entertainers like Danny Kaye, Danny Thomas, Bob Hope and so many others are gone, and younger generations don't have such inspirational performance.
People tend to forget he had some great talent behind him, too.. His wife Sylvia Fine was his manager, producer, songwriter and more. She won many awards for her creative work.
My mother was born in the Ukraine, too. She'd told me many times the she knew him when they were children. I grew up enj9ying anything he was involved in. I used to go door to door for UNICEF AS A YOUNGSTER JUST BECAUSE DANNY KAYE THOUGHT IT A WORTHY CAUSE.
This is my favorite of his as well!! My other is “Me and the Colonel”, both this one and “The Five Pennies” are more serious movies, but do have his hint of humor as well. I’ve tried to see everything of his, even TV movies or shows he guested on. He’s my favorite actor ever from that time period, the quadruple threat: actor, singer, dancer, & comedian. He was excellent in every single category.
I loved Danny Kaye. When I was in elementary school my parents took my older brother and I to a live show in Las Vegas. Our table was close to the stage and I still remember him looking at me and singing a song for me. It was a childhood experiance that still makes me smile. Such a multitalented man. So glad his daughters message in this artical only confirms what i felt that evening. When he sang to me it was in such a sweet fatherly way. A special memory from this 64 year woman.
We cherish our memory of having met him in a upstair private room of the most famous Chinese Restaurant in China Town in Frisco, where he was all by himself and us. Fondest memory of our life time and still reminise it. Great actor and tap dancer of all. He looked at us warmly, and we were so happy to be with him then. Kimmi/Lisa/ Raj ❤
I remember one time I watched him conducting an orchestra and after a few minutes of beautiful music he just exclaimed loudly " Oh! That's just Beautiful!!" while still conducting the piece. Another fond memory was seeing him on The Muppet Show. My parents joined me that night watching it because they were such big fans of his.
Danny Kaye is my all time favourite actor and I look up to him. My favourite film of all time is the secret life of Walter Mitty I never hear anyone really talk about him or know who is expected for white Christmas of course. Thank you for bringing light to him 🙏 Great video as well 👍
I loved the court jester. The part where he speeded up with all the knights was hilarious. I showed it to my daughter in 2020’s and she rolled up. He was very funny and very kind to sick children. Lovely man.❤️🇬🇧😂

I loved all his work. I had heard about his "darker" side to his personality, but you have to accept that he was not a one dimensional human being. In the end he was still a man with much love of life and the world.

Is there anything this man could not do?! An all round entertainer & comic genius. Loved his films when I was growing up, I’m 61 now, will have to find some to watch again. He had remarkable talents, irreplaceable & will be forever missed. I think most of us have a “dark side” if we are honest, no body’s perfect!🤣🤩🥰

Nice piece! I have been a lifelong fan of Danny and while working in TV in Los Angeles had a couple of opportunities to meet & spend a little time in his presence. He was complex and did not suffer fools gladly but was gracious and I am thrilled to have been able to see behind his screen image. His movies & TV work need to be utilized more or he will be forgotten, I fear. 🎭🎞️📺🥰
You know, when Danny was appearing at the La Martinique night club in New York in 1940, Jack Benny caught his act. And, as with anyone who *REALLY* made him laugh, he was heard above everyone else. When Danny was finished, he went backstage and roared, "WHO'S THE DRUNKEN BUTTER AND EGG MAN WHO WAS LAUGHING IN THE WRONG PLACES???". When told it was Jack, he was shaken a bit, but recovered and sighed, "Thank goodness no one told me in advance that HE was in the audience! I would have been nervous." They met, and became good friends for life.
I was six years old when my parents took me to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. At six, my favorite thing was pretending. Combining the pretending of Walter Mitty and the acting of Danny Kaye, that movie quickly became my favorite and convinced me I wanted to be an actress when I grew up. I held on to that delightful fantasy until I was about 19.
I adore Danny Kaye not only as an entertainer but as the first UNICEF ambassador. He must have loved needy children to support them. Few people could accomplish what he did in his lifetime. He was really amazing. There remains , however, a question about him conducting orchestras. Once I heard that he did not read music. And yet he often appeared in TV shows as a conductor; he had a program “An Evening with Danny Kaye” in 1981, where he conducted the New York Philharmonic. I wonder how he learned conducting skills.
I’m glad you spoke of Danny!s “dark side,” which was putting it kindly. I was blessed with a 55 year career as a studio singer and my first steady job was as a member of the vocal backup group on the 60s Danny Kaye Show. I was 19. Harvey Korman got his start on this show and I simply rejoiced when he went to the Carol Burnett Show where he got to shine. Danny was nasty to Harvey. One time we all sang behind Harvey in a marching tune. Danny told the music arranger to purposely mess up the rhythm and we rehearsed (unbeknownst to Harvey) it til the performance which damn near destroyed Harvey. This was just so mean. I personally bore up for five seasons but had the opportunity to work on the Dean Martin Show, which I jumped at. What a relief to get away from that awful Danny Kaye. On the contrary, I can’t say enough about the heaven it was to work with Dean.
I once heard Carol Burnett say that when Harvey first started on her show he was a bit of a diva and wasn’t initially very nice to the cast and crew. She did say that she corrected his behaviour only once and he turned things around.
This was an interesting over view but it would have been good if you’d shown us more of his most notable performances rather merely flashing some video and describing them. Did you even mention his wife? Where did his daughter come from?
More slush. All these things that use the phrase "comfirms the rumours" always skirt away from what the REAL rumours are... and in this case, the real rumours about Danny Kay are never addressed.
Mr. Kaye was a Seattle radio station owner and production company owner. I had the pleasure of meeting him at national broadcast conventions. I almost went to work for him but had another offer with a manufacturing company to do advertising...
My late mother, God bless here, loved Danny! He visitied Bergen, Norway in 1955 where we lived (I wasn't born), and she joined the hugh crowed outside the Hotel ( Norge). She got a glims of him and said: ''.. but he is so little'' 🤣
Dena was very brave to speak up- considering the fact that he virtually threatened to cut off her inheritance if she dared say *one* thing about his private life while he was alive. I'm glad she didn't stay silent. Danny was a great performer........and he DID care about people. But he could be such a basket case........
For a minute there I thought you were going to reveal what has been said for years about Kaye - that he was gay - bisexual? - and had a long standing relationship with Lawrence Olivier...
At first glance, I too was worried that 'FactsVerse' was going to promote those rumors. They happen to be complete falsehoods promoted by Hollywood press agents who disliked Danny Kaye. Fortunately, 'FactsVerse' stuck to the facts - in a worthy video tribute.
@@unclenelvisBig deal. That’s not the discussion here. The discussion is that truth is told. I get really ticked about ppl attempting to besmirch a man’s reputation who is no longer around to defend himself. And yes, it would be besmirching, and thankfully that wasn’t done.
For those of you who think fondly of the on-screen Danny Kay sorry to burst your bubble. I knew Kay’s long standing personal assistant (Mr. Bonus) who’d nothing nice to say about Kay. Though Kay’s assistant acknowledged his talent and intellect he said Danny Kay was totally egotistical superior to everyone and a absolute tyrant. According to Mr. Bonus, Kay navigated his business (and personal) relationships by after belittling and garroting whomever, Kay would heavily compensate (bribe) the offended to keep them around and quite about his ill behavior...
These rumors were rife and probably true. Introducing them at the Emmys, He got snotty about “I Spy”, which was played in his time slot on another network, saying, “If they get any hotter I’ll be off the air…” dead silence from the audience; a real trump moment… just s little hint of the covert snottiness.
I couldn’t agree more. Tyrant is the perfect word. For 55 years I had a blessed and busy studio singing career and my first steady job, at 19, was as part of the vocal group on Danny’s 60s TV show. My most blessed day was getting to leave that hideous man and go to NBC where for 6 heavenly years I worked on the Dean Martin Show. Best memories ever.
I never saw the performance, but he played Noah in the musical, Two by Two. I had an 8-track soundtrack, and I treasured it until the cassette failed I have seen some still photos from the production, and Noah was relying on a crutch. I learned that he had broken his leg during the production run (apparently in conjunction with the show) and appeared in one or more performances despite the injury. I loved the movie Hans Christian Andersen, and I really enjoyed The Court Jester as well. I saw a clip of Danny conducting an orchestra through the Flight of the Bumble Bee with a fly swatter as his baton. Danny Kayed was my second favorite comedian when I was a child, surpassed only by Red Skelton. I think Danny Kaye had a broader and stronger performing talent, but Red was my "friend".
Many people don't know that Kaye was a terrific drama actor. In my hometown of Tacoma they have a low power FM radio station that plays old radio shows. He was in an episode of suspense called I never knew the dead man from 1950. He's outstanding in it as a man falsely accused of murder.
Hans Christian Anderson and White Christmas and other fun films...but I loved Hans Christian Anderson. You can add the Secret Life Of Walter Mitte too. I can still hear the songs in my head...I'm 91 now and he was a good performer.... for sure. pat
Danny was a super-talented entertainer, ("The Court Jester" is worth all of Jerry Lewis' movies put together). His performance of songs like Cole Porter's "Let Not Talk About Love" is brilliant. At the same time, he was a complex individual, as his Wikipedia entry once showed. However, it has been "cleaned up" to make his off-screen match his on-screen persona.
I once played hooky (skipped school) to see Danny Kaye perform live onstage at the massive beautiful Roxy Theater in New York City. I was probably 14 years old. Maybe he sang Minnie The Moocher !
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT KIND OF PRIVATE LIFE ANYONE HAS BEEN IN THAT LIMELIGHT FOR DECADES. WE HAVE ALL THOSE SKELETONS IN OUR CLOSETS WE'D LOVE TO HIDE AND HOLLYWOOD IS NO EXCEPTION. ALL I KNOW IS I LOVED DANNY AND ALL HE DID TO MAKE US LAUGH AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF HIS COMEDY. I BELIEVE THAT THE GREAT FILM "THE COURT JESTER" HAS TO BE THE(E) FUNNIEST FILM I HAVE EVER WATCHED!! MY SECOND FOR PURE DELIGHT IS "WHITE CHRISTMAS"
Kaye was in a Broadway show that was composed by Richard Roger's Rogers said Kaye was impossible as he would change lyrics and want all the attention on him.
I read that in his biography "Nobody's Fool". He was very irascible at the end of his life. They ended up cancelling the show Two By Two.....due to problems with his not following the script and he'd also broken his leg.
Apparently when he and Basil Rathbone were in the Court Jester, Rathbone couldn’t get over how Danny had to learn how to use a sword and then outplayed him!
At age six I saw Danny Kaye in the secret life of Walter Mitty. At that age I loved to pretend and somehow conflated Walter Mitty’s daydreaming, Danny Kaye’s acting, and my pretending and came up with a determination to be an actress when I grew up.
I saw a documentary about Danny Kaye that stated that when he signed up with a studio, the first thing they did was bleach his hair to make him look less Jewish. I find it sad that his tremendous talent wasn't good enough for the studio.
It was in his biography "Nobody's Fool". I still don't get how him having red hair made people think of him as Jewish and blond hair didn't. Red hair makes me think of Scots/Irish/Celts.
In a Rolling Stone survey some time ago people were asked which films they disliked so much they'd never see them again. One of the responses was "Anything with Danny Kate"
The Five Pennies is my favorite movie of his. I used to sing the ("Lullaby in Ragtime,") to my kids at night. I also love his tongue twister song and his All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth with Patty Andrews.

So many memories!!!! ❤❤❤ this man. I remember his hilarious skit as a conductor. My belly hurt from laughing so hard!!!!!
Mood switchin is the common thing by true artists. I find him still a generous and multi talented genius. :)
I love Harvey Korman
@@DianaLee-xr9yr thank you. Yes. That was Danny Kaye.
I once heard Carol Burnett say that when Harvey first started on her show he was a bit of a diva and wasn’t initially very nice to the cast and crew. She did say that she corrected his behaviour only once and he turned things around.
I like his scene with Vera Ellen in White Christmas : the best things happen when your dancing.!
He was a better rapper then the rappers of today!
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
I was hoping it was going to be in regards to the rumoured secret visit by him, with Elvis, flying in to Britain for an undercover visit.
The Court Jester is immortal...
One of our favorites too, you've got fine taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
This was an interesting over view but it would have been good if you’d shown us more of his most notable performances rather merely flashing some video and describing them. Did you even mention his wife? Where did his daughter come from?
I loved him in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and on the Muppet Show!
No mention of his famous children's music?
"Mommy Gimme a Drink of Water"
A very talented human being...mom turned me onto him and his movies when I was young...never disappointed...

More slush. All these things that use the phrase "comfirms the rumours" always skirt away from what the
REAL rumours are... and in this case, the real rumours about Danny Kay are never addressed.
Who would thought that his daughter morphed into looking like David Bowie in his later years lol.

She got a glims of him and said: ''.. but he is so little'' 🤣
According to Wikipedia, Danny Kaye was 5'11," hardly "little," but maybe your mother expected him to be very tall?
Dena was very brave to speak up- considering the fact that he virtually threatened to cut off her inheritance if she dared say *one* thing about his private life while he was alive.
I'm glad she didn't stay silent. Danny was a great performer........and he DID care about people. But he could be such a basket case........
Like that he was gay? That part was left out of the video somehow.
@@emjayay ah, he was a womanizer, lol.
Think that says more about YOU than HIM.
I'm always wary of anybody accusing a celebrity of being bisexual, since it's an accusation that's impossible to disprove.
Yea you can’t even spell Laurence Olivier. No really. You can’t.
@@unclenelvisBig deal. That’s not the discussion here. The discussion is that truth is told. I get really ticked about ppl attempting to besmirch a man’s reputation who is no longer around to defend himself. And yes, it would be besmirching, and thankfully that wasn’t done.
In the 70s/80s when I was young, they would show a lot of his movies on TV. I loved watching those movies.🙂
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
@@DianaLee-xr9yrWhere’s your book?? All performers have a book inside them! Our experiences are unique.😀🥳
Thanks for the info! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Hans Christian Anderson and White Christmas and other fun films...but I loved Hans Christian Anderson. You can add the Secret Life Of Walter Mitte too. I can still hear the songs in my head...I'm 91 now and he was a good performer.... for sure. pat
So glad my generation got to also get to see some of the best of the last generation.
I'm so glad to hear such loving and kind remarks about Mr. Kate. I thought this was going to end up an unkind ' tell all ' but it wasn't Thank you.
One of our favorites too, you've got fine taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
I once played hooky (skipped school) to see Danny Kaye perform live onstage at the massive beautiful Roxy Theater in New York City. I was probably 14 years old. Maybe he sang Minnie The Moocher !
Fabulous comedic actor 👏👏👏👏
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for Danny. In your opinion, what is his finest role?
Loved watching him! ❤
Danny Kaye actually did an episode of the Bill Cosby show....probably one of his last.
i could not believe he was in his 70's i wish he guest star more 80's show before he died
And one of the best, if not the best of the series.
Kaye was in a Broadway show that was composed by Richard Roger's
Rogers said Kaye was impossible as he would change lyrics and want all the attention on him.
It was a musical about Noah's Ark...... TWO BY TWO.....the cast album is on here.
I read that in his biography "Nobody's Fool". He was very irascible at the end of his life. They ended up cancelling the show Two By Two.....due to problems with his not following the script and he'd also broken his leg.
I loved to watch his movies as a child and I got to see him in 1982 at World Disney park they were filming .
Us too! Thank you for sharing your memories and life story. Which of Danny's roles appealed to you the most?
Loved the Court Jester movie.
""The Inspector General ":Hail. Hail Brobny to the sky! "
Apparently when he and Basil Rathbone were in the Court Jester, Rathbone couldn’t get over how Danny had to learn how to use a sword and then outplayed him!
And Rathbone was an extremely good fencer. I suspect Danny Kaye was a natural athlete-it’s rare, but some people are incredibly coordinated
I just love his ability to sing @ dance with famou,s people
I met him years ago at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
He was very nice and a fantastic cook.
At age six I saw Danny Kaye in the secret life of Walter Mitty. At that age I loved to pretend and somehow conflated Walter Mitty’s daydreaming, Danny Kaye’s acting, and my pretending and came up with a determination to be an actress when I grew up.
Fun stuff, thank you so much for sharing your life story. We're a big fan of Danny!
Amazing performer. White Christmas and Hans Christian Anderson will live forever.
Skokie was a great movie. Watch it, so relevant for our times.

He used to host THE WIZARD OF OZ in the 60's
Interesting, thanks for sharing this info! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Danny Kaye's Daughter looks like her father
I saw a documentary about Danny Kaye that stated that when he signed up with a studio, the first thing they did was bleach his hair to make him look less Jewish. I find it sad that his tremendous talent wasn't good enough for the studio.
interesting, thanks for sharing this info! Which of Danny's roles appealed to you the most?
@@FactsVerse My fav Danny Kaye role was in "Skokie" in which he portrays a Holocaust survivor.
He was always obviously "performing" just like he was in his personal life, something oddly left out of the video.
The Five Pennies is my favorite movie of his. I used to sing the ("Lullaby in Ragtime,") to my kids at night. I also love his tongue twister song and his All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth with Patty Andrews.
I read where he was a trained chef.
He was self taught. 😊
Danny you were the greatest ever lived
