@@SoulSingerDiscovers I think it's better to discover it now, honestly. Rock radio and MTV played it so much back in '99 I got sick of it. It wasn't until people started making reaction videos to it that I could put myself in the shoes of a first-time listener and appreciate its uniqueness, heaviness, and groove again.
Korn resonates big time back in the 90s and 2000s, and they have continued to maintain their legacy. A legendary group. Not just nostalgia, but timeless art
I’ve seen Korn a couple of times and they are phenomenal live! The first time they opened with Blind, it was on their Freak on a Leash tour, and the Greensboro Colosseum damn near exploded when Jonathan Davis hit his first line “are you ready”. The second time I saw them they brought a kid up on stage during Shoots and Ladders and he was just bouncing all over the stage banging his head. Another fun fact: Jonathan had very little vocal training until after Queen Of The Damned, when he started refining his sound with a vocal coach. Listening to Korn's fourth and fifth albums (Issues and Untouchables) the difference in his vocals is quite distinct
That makes sense. It felt a little less raw, and not in that "auto tune" clean up job way. More focused, I guess.
"Issues" is one of my fave albums and "Untouchables" was great. I think I'm gonna have to put the albums in my car for the week again now.
Was drawn in by the pumpkinhead poster, tho Korn was my first band I discovered I liked in the 2000s. Every few years an album comes out it strangely seems to have a couple songs that fit exactly what's going on in my life at the time.
I have a rare copy of the "Alone I Play" cd/DVD where Jonathan sings the Queen of the Damn songs live. It's absolutely fantastic. Might be stuff on RUclips from that.

Reactions to this track always take me back, to when it was first released. Because that was a pretty formative time in my life. I had just moved into my first apartment, and was able to become part of a local social circle that always hung out at a 24/7 restaurant. So I got invited to house parties, and it was there that I heard this album for the first time. Think I was sitting on a huge speaker for the whole thing at somebody’s parents’ house. Another time I was at this type of grad party on a massive property, and this song got blasted through the sound system. And then I heard it on the radio. The band had definitely arrived, and I’m glad they are still going today. P.S. Yes, Jonathan wears a kilt (I believe for almost every live show by now) and plays the bagpipes. I caught them live in ‘99 on a university campus and he rocked both.
Queen Of The Damned was mostly filmed in Melbourne, Australia. A mate was a regular extra in local productions, and as a fellow goth he invited me to come and be an extra in the crowd for the concert. It was only a couple of days before though and there was no way I could get away from work 😭
There's one extra queen of the damed song that didn't "feat" the Ost. "Jonathan Davis - careless". It's an amazing song. One good choice for a reaction 👌 greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹

I read Queen of the Damned in Iraq in 2004-2005. One of My good friends saw that I was a huge fan of it, so He gave Me the soundtrack CD! I still listen to it a lot! Great song, though I would call Korn a hard rock band. Keep up the great work My Fine Scottish Lady! ❤❤❤

When Korn started there was no nu metal, they pioneerd the genre.Nirvana was the biggest band in the world when they started so they were very different from the other stuff that was out there at the time, and yes some metalheads absolutely hated them. These days I think we can recognise the impact they had on music whether we like them or not.

everyone always misses this fact but korn is actually the spiritual successor to nirvana... if you loved nirvana there is a pretty high chance korn swept you up the same way when they came out and it was their turn to make new music that the world never heard before
It depends on what you consider nu-metal. Deftones formed in ‘88, P.O.D. formed in ‘92 and Korn formed in ‘93. Korn blew up first but I don’t consider them the first nu-metal band.
@@noahgossman1868 Adrenaline was released a year after the first korn album and nobody heard of Deftones until Around the Fur came out in 97, and I would consider POD Pop Rock.

So I know others have told you how Jonathon plays the bagpipes in their shows - there's actually a clip out there where he was recovering from Covid, so his lung capacity wasn't 100%, but that didn't stop him from breaking out the pipes! Heya, my Scottish dudette! Yes, Jonathan Davis is allowed to wear a Kilt on stage, because you instantly are, if you open a set with minutes of piping the shit out of the bagpipes before any other musician enters the stage. I guess that counts. (I have no clue if Jonathan Davis has Scottish roots, but probably yes, and if not, who cares.)
Guess what, in my death metal band, the vocalist did wear a kilt on stage, too. And, as a bassist, I used the "Fieldy" Arvizu trick of using a standard bass with low tunings. When he developed his signature sound for Korn, he wanted to do something different, than others do. One thing, that NuMetal does differently from Grunge, which was probably the most important influence of this time, was the general use of down-tunings, like in extreme metal, although, well, much less extreme (D# standard was very popular). Arvizu did this with a standard bass AND standard string gauges. So, the tension of the strings is much lower than standard, and this leads to a kind of wobbly feeling while playing and a TON of fret noises and presence in the sound (even more with an active bass and scooped EQ), and a strange kind of low end, leaving tons of room for the guitars and vocals in the mid-range. I always loved that approach on bass before, and when I went into death metal, I tuned my 4-string like the lowest 4 strings of a 5-string (B standard instead of E) - with a standard gauge, similar to what he did in Korn. And man, appreciation of his style rises instantly, if you get, how much control you need to stay in tune with wobbly strings - and how many new possibilities it brings in terms of expression (although I am a pick player, while Arvizu slapped the bass, bringing even more fret sounds and percussive playing).
So yeah - I guess Fieldy Arvizu is the much under-appreciated genius of Korn's instrumental side.
Sure, NuMetal does take a lot of things from the grunge era, mixed in more extreme metal elements and sharp, new sounds in opposite to the more traditional metal and rock sound in grunge. Some say more modern, some say more sterile, but definitely a change in paradigm. I really loved some bands of the NuMetal age a lot, like e.g. Korn for their will to celebrate weirdness or System Of A Down for their implementation of their Armenian musical roots.
They hit my nerve, when they hit the music scene, because I just left heavy rock and metal and went on to experimental rock and electronic sounds that time.
According to Encyclopedia Metallum, almost all NuMetal bands are NOT metal.
And you probably can already guess - I don't give a fuck at all. For sure these bands are metal, no matter what some shitty online metal heroes/squares from the music police hit into the keyboards (ACAB, right?). These people should grow up, really.
(Man, ranting about musical boomers and their younger counterparts is SO much fun, hahaha!)

Intresting facts
- The song is about how the Music company they signed with would parade them around almost as if to say "Hey, look what I got" hence the Freak on a leash, cause they felt like the music company dint know what to do with them and they were almost a "diversity" hire to be able to say that they dint only sign pop and boy bands.
- J. Davis oldest son was doing a "my family tree" or something like that for school and went in deeeeeep and found out that Davis family originally came from Scotland hence the kilt and bagpipes

Hmm... I kinda agree on not being able to be balanced on this. This music was a huge stepping stone for me as a kid/teenager. My music tastes went from like... oldies, to radio rock like Matchbox 20 to Godsmack and Slipknot then a quick turn Children of Bodom and ending with bands Cattle Decapitation and Dragged Into Sunlight currently.
So, while I'm not a *fan* of this style anymore, I appreciate it for what it is/was. I think nu-metal is sillier compared to other genres but it got me to where I am today as a huge fan of death metal and grindcore. Everyone gotta start somewhere! It just lacks the complexity or creativity of more extreme genres for me, personally.

They were the band that got me into metal. Fell in love with nu metal as the 90s ended when I was a wee angsty teen. Their first 3ish albums still stand up really well, the rest I can take it or leave it. He calls his "rap" Reggie Raps after the bassist, it's something he does a few times. I don't think anybody tried really replicating that, maybe Disturbed on Stupify lol. I think a lot of people would be surprised, that he sings just like he speaks. He really has a more tender, thin voice. Some people find it whiney.
Like most young suburban men at the time, I enjoyed Korn when they debuted, but thought it was kinda shallow and gimmicky, so therefore directly relatable to myself. I have since come to appreciate most Nu Metal (Fred Durst notwithstanding), and most music in general. And I still listen to Korn in the car, wit the bass turned way up. Also, Davis had a small cameo in Queen of the Damned, did you spot him? :)
If you want a challenge have a listen (or react to) Tallah - Overconfidence (there is horror vibes in the offial video and a great one take vocal as well) . They are a New Nu-metal band that sounds like the love child of Korn, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot and Just Bonitz the vocalist can give Will Ramos of Lorna shore a run for his money. Glad you loved Tesseract.
That snare pattern is just drummers being influenced by hip hop breaks, which were sampled from 70s funk, lots of ghost notes, syncopated accents, and drags. hip hop was obviously huge so metal followed

At the time, opinions on Korn's style/subgenre were a bit divided in my surroundings. They didn't have the clear rapper+melodic singer combination that was present in all the likes of the Linkin Parks and other commercial nu-metal sludge that was hot in the early 00's. Together with Rage Against The Machine they were considered the most famous direct influences to, and instigators of nu-metal, but whether or not they were a true part of it was hotly debated. With the power of hindsight and filter of time, my opinion on that has solidified: while they still sound different to me from "proper" nu-metal, including them in that label is just way more useful when talking about that style/movement and time within metal. And yes, to me it all is still very much metal.
With this particular song, even if the first verses and choruses have always felt a bit...tame, when the scat weirdness happens in the breakdown and the subsequent guitar riff with the shouty-scatty-grunty bits - I've headbanged to that on the dance floor. Many a time. But over the years I do think that the popularity did bring over-exposure for me and many people I know, and I think that really hurt the general opinion of them among my peers. But time did heal that, and I've come back around to really appreciating Korn, although I still wouldn't say I'm a fan.
But in my experience no metalheads at the time were Korn fans, because it was just not loud/technical/distorted/whatever enough for them. There was just so much metal that was so much more... of anything that could draw someone to metal. There was a large group of angsty teen fans of course, but those usually either grew out of it or moved on deeper into metal. Korn was appreciated, but they didn't have many real persistent fans. I actually don't think I've known a single one. But everyone knew them.
On a tangent, as far as modern vampire themes go, I prefer the Anita Blake approach from Laurell K. Hamilton.

Ooof! Yeeeeah, Daddy is one of those incredible creations. And I too have that emotionally masochistic love of extreme emotional response. But holy phuk I'm careful about recommending that song to people who dont also have PTSD issues.

I never classed Korn as Nu-Metal. Growing up when these first emerged that wasn't a term. It was only when the major record labels came in with Limp Biscuit / Papa Roach and that whole over produced ,forced rap onto pop metal thing that it became a term. "nu-metal" probably a term made by those same majors to sell it to kids.
Korn always felt more honest to me, genuine hip hop influence from the likes of Cypress Hill and a more dj and punk approach to guitar riffs.
Also on the first record he's screaming about being R*p*d by his dad, hardly commercial.
Theres a chunk of great nu metal bands and albums. Like most genres the cream rises to the top, and is able to gain some longevity. But theres alo a few of the kesser known/shorter lived ones that did great stuff.

Out of every band, people have told me that this band saved their life at some point more than any other band by a huge margin. This band talked a lot about stuff that people didn't talk about on their records. Nobody and I mean nobody else would have TOUCHED the song "Daddy" with a 1,000,000 foot pole

I was never a fan of Korn or Nu Metal as a whole. I also never liked Jonathan's singing style or voice. But each to their own. He has and Korn do, have more talent in their wee fingers than i do in my whole body. I respect them fir doing what they do, even if it isn't my cup of tea. I don't understand why people dish shite on people and things that they hate. If you don't like it, listen to something else and be happy. There's enough arseholes in the world that aren't happy and like to bring others down, so why add to them. There are plenty more other trees in the Dark Metal Forest to choose from. Honestly, Korn, the band, and Corn, the vegetable, have been quite similar in my book. Never cared for the NU Metal sound.
