It really is an amazing tool. Bought it and used it once on a track, and it's probably my favorite thing I've ever made. Just pulling in a bunch of chords that sound good together is amazing. I'm not great at music theory, in fact I am bad.. Structuring chords takes a while for me, I can do it but I'm just super slow at it and it destroys creativity.. If I know I want to make something I have a set amount of time to do so before my brain goes "DONE!" and quits.
I might not be qualified to say this but I reckon Scaler 2 has done more to enable bedroom producers then any other plugin out there. It may not be the first to assist with chord progressions and compositions, but it's certainly the best at it in terms of ease of use and just the sheer speed of it. Once you have a basic knowledge, you can come up with new musical cues and themes in no time flat and it doesn't matter the genre whether it's hip hob beats or cinematic orchestral. No, I have no affiliation with them, I am just a massive fan.

@@tigress1girlinstacomposer and ezkeys2 but actually scaler2 the most when it comes to sketching a cue. If you learn these thoroughly enough, they provide everything you need. For instance, use scaler 2 modal interchange feature to speed up and assist implementing key changes in your compositions to consciously create an emotional narrative in your cue.

Great video, Geoff! The best walkthrough/tutorial videos I have seen for Scaler have been from one of the devs on the School of Synthesis channel. Great showcase of the crazy stuff Scaler can do, and he applies it to multiple musical genres.

Scaler is brilliant , absolutely inspirational . I didn't know that selecting a genre would retain the selected scale , thanks for that. The developers have recorded pretty thorough tutorials with each release.

Yeah there's nothing out there quite like it. Well, ORB Producer Suite is somewhat similar but i agree completely. It's both helped me learn music theory in a more hands-on way as well as helping me break out of idea paralysis. I'm suggesting this thing to literally every producer i know because it's truly got something for everybody.

BTW, I subbed. You seem to have great content and I like the way you teach here. The official tutorial for Scaler is very confusing. Now If I can make my Maschine Plus or Akai Force control those chords, that would be a dream!
hanks very much!! This is exactly what I need, exactly when I need it. Just starting piano roll after mastering clips. I'm no longer able to physically play drums anymore, and Cakewalk and a few VSTs have opened up my artistic side again. This tool is perfect for me. I'm working with other musicians again. If I can just get my ideas across to them, we can communicate in the same language. This is mine in 2 weeks.
I actually spent a few days routing midi in such a way that it would play chords out on single notes like this, but tbh - never got it to work nearly as well as this. Thanks for pointing me in Scaler 2's direction my G, this will have saved me further headache
You can Programmatically Jump from one Performance Setting to another Via MIDI - this adds a whole other dimension to this instrument

Great tips here! I bought it recently, but haven't done my homework.
Ok so i know this trick for scaler to get the full potential out of it.. make your set of chords in scaler bind your keyboard to it... set a performance or phrase to play out.. then use that Midi Capture button, so you are recording what you play only within scaler for now... when done drag the midi to your track from the Drag button just under midi capture... the performance you just heard instantly turned to midi.. and you can set that to any track now.. put it on a whole different VST instrument... you can get really creative doing this.

I have Captain Chord and their most recent upgrade, Epic. Since it's original release, I've always felt something was lacking. Because of that experience I've been hesitant on "pulling the plug" and purchase Scaler. I think you've convinced me!
Same boat as me
I worked on the beta program for Captain Epic. I was shocked when they released it (because it was so not ready), but they are working hard to make it what it should be. It's very different in concept and intent to Scaler even if there is a bit of crossover. As someone who has a little (but not a ton of) theory behind me and who doesn't exclusively work in EDM genres, Scaler is a much better application for me, but it doesn't do melodies, and that's where my concentration with Captain lies. I feel that some of the beta's had a better engine for creating melodies than the current release. In any event, they can both help, and neither are a golden ticket to churning out hits. in terms of UI, Scaler wins hands down.
It is always being improved, which is great.
My dude, I have been trying to watch the official tutorials and could not get a grasp on what he was on about and felt like I made a bad purchase as I felt it was not a beginner-friendly tool. I am not even 5 minutes into your video and I can already see how this tool can help me in the future. Your calm tone of voice, clear pronunciation and beginner friendly lingo make this a superior video (for newbies) compared to the official stuff that's out there.

Like many in the comments, Ive had Scaler 2 for a month or so and never got past the initial beginner wall of “what do I do with this thing”, and I still felt that way after watching several of the official tutorials… they seemed to go over my head. After os and hardware upgrades what I had stopped working. I’ll have to look into this one to see if it goes wth the m1 cpu. I love what they are doing. I believe it should be used to improve your understanding of chords. Depending on it too much could hamper that development but it’s great.

had scaler for a Long time now. starting making music with it and this is very very very dangerous anyone that got it you should use this on as many times as possible - I didnt under stand music theory and it helps me find the moods the tones, the melodies & now it has scale detection too!? you got a gem here
This resource is a great aide in composition ,,,all you really need is an ear in relation to what sounds right for you in a project and the will deliver . As you note it has a different focus from the Captain Chords , which I have and love but if you are into cinematic or other orchestral inspirations Scaler is the way to go. Those who wish to explore Scaler should search Davide Carbone on YT ,,,he is one the developers and has posted extensive detailed tutorials,At the time of writing Scaler is in version 2.6. Do well .
I just wanted to mention that Scaler 2 is now available for iPad as a standalone or AUV3 sound and or midi source. This is an ultra important development in relation to my work flow as priorly I migrated to the IOS / Aum environment for composition after investing in an inventory of instruments and high end processors such as the Fab Filter range and also because of the much faster CPU . With the release of Scaler 2 on IOS I can now spontaneously create coherent musically complex stems for eventual inclusion with stems created with Kontakt libraries and subsequent mix down in my PC DAW.
Opinions will differ but my experience is that Scaler 2 is a much more comprehensive creative palette than the aides to composition currently available in the the IOS environment. 👍
I have to agree with Des on this one. Really, if you go through all of David Carbone's tutorials, you will learn it inside out. In terms of how other people use it, a channel called 41 fingers covers a lot, although be prepared for longer format presentations.

@@TerenceKearns Terence good call. As of writing scaler is now available on my iPad for expression the in AUM environment or similar IOS apps …I’m blessed . My iPad has the M1 chip so in terms of cpu efficiency it is super impressive so I am happy 😊👍✨🦄✨

Recently got this myself. I need to knuckle down and learn what it can do. One thing you can do is when you have the chord progression at the bottom, left click just outside those squares and drag across them and you can then drag the whole lot into your DAW, instead of doing them one at a time. 👍

Even better, you can record in Scaler your playing of the progression, one finger at a time, at your own rythm, and drag your recording to the DAW.
One of the more helpful Scaler 2 videos I have watched because you went very slow and showed step-by-step on how to implement. Other videos go so fast and attempt to show many many features that I get overwhelmed or lost quickly with regard to how I can use it to make songs. I am a home studio hobbyist making either cover songs with my own spin or general pop/power pop, or classic rock songs. I got S2 to help to quickly explore chord progressions and arrangement ideas to get me beyond just 2-3 guitars, bass, and drums with occasional piano and organ. I know the magic is in S2 but I am still struggling to apply it. I also want to use it to help with melodies if I come up with the chord progressions. Question #1: Are the instruments inside S2 good enough to use in demo recordings or do I need to find substitutes, assumedly of higher quality, from my VSTi collection? Most S2 video show orchestral, cinematic, EDM or House/Trap music. Question #2: Does anyone know of a video demonstrating using S2 for a nice pop, power pop, or rock music? Or, is this tool overkill for that purpose. I need some inspiration to get my music and song writing hobby to the next level. Question #3: If using a chord for lets say 4 beats of a 4/4 time pop song, do most people drag on chord into their DAW and work from there or use S2 tools to build the chord progression? Make sense?
Good post, I understand the points you raised about other videos diving in too deep and too quickly (especilly Scaler's own tutorial videos). Re your questions, I'm not a fan of the stock sounds in Scaler, namely the pianos, so to audition the chords, I route the output to an external vst or hardware synth.
(Tip) Don't use complex patches with lots of fx and modulation otherwise you can't hear the voicings clearly.
For Pop and rock I would stick with major and minor triads and 7th chords. Complex extensions are the reserve of Jazz and Orchestral music. But I would experiment with chord inversions to make your progression more interesting.
In edit mode (I think) Scaler gives you the option to choose how long you want each chord of your progression to play for. 1/2 bar, whole bar, two bars etc.
Like you, I'm still finding my way around what scaler is capable of doing.

You did a good job explaining in your video. I bought this recently when i also got my Mac Studio Ultra and so far I haven’t really taken the time to work with it. I already have a good grasp of harmony and I was like ?
I get that these chords are derivative of the initial chord, i usually can just see them in my mind. However, i get the feeling that if I really explore the plugin it will show me possibilities that i haven’t yet considered and maybe new ways of discovering fresh ideas. Thanks for making this, i will go back to it again open my mind to it.
By the way you really seem to like F minor! Just curious as to why it resonates with you more than say..G minor or D minor?

Regarding my comments below about not being intuitive. @14:35 in the video, to remove unwanted chords (a basic operation), you have to right click and scroll down the menu to remove each chord. Also there's no obvious way to copy and paste chords between patterns, and to turn daw sync on/off you have to go into settings.
Really good explanation, even better than the creator of scaler and to be honest they would have a lot more customer if they explain it as good as you did here. The potential for orchestral and gaming score is there but we don't know how to use it correctly.

Just thinking how it would be cool if they made it so you could adjust per note the exact duration within the various strumming sequencial settings. They could include a ton more strumming patterns above and beyond the database within some of the guitar based VST's that i have. I am able to import those however, it could be a bonus version update for scaler to make this built in. The midi capture function has been automatically shutting itself off i noticed, and then i try to reestablish the midi capture, those it ends up cutting out, seemingly randomly within 10 notes or less, often after just 1 midi detected note or 2 or 3. Some sort of sensitivity setting for what constitutes midi detection and staying active for listening to further incoming notes following the first or first few. I have been using it mainly within FL Studio, and recently trying ableton live with a push controller. I also run a maschine studio into fl studio as the pads are decent and the menuing is fast and works well for a option to using a mouse.
Interesting, I've captured 10s of thousands of midi notes in individual (automated) sessions and have never been able to get it to act up. There is no sensitivity control unless you are doing an audio detection and not midi capture. If you are on the latest release (2.6) and can consistently repro midi capture failing, it would be really cool of you to head over to the Scaler user community (you can find the link in the Scaler Help screen) and detail your findings. If others have already reported it, you might get some details. There is some great content over there. As for duration, depending on what you are trying to do, you might find what you need using the duration setting under Edit/Playback Timings. You also get some playback timing control adjusting the Chord Duration and Play Quantize To fields in Settings. Good luck

Scaler 2 is great but not very intuitive to find your way around. I keep returning to youtube videos like yours to refresh my knowledge and find out how to do what should be simple tasks . I don't find the stock sounds that great, but it's very easy to route the output to another plugin. But scaler is a great tool and i'm still just scratching the surface of it's capabilities.
If someone else hasn’t pointed it out yet, you can just click and drag to highlight the chords like you would desktop icons and drop the midi into your daw or whatever else. that blew my mind when I saw someone do it lol

I always struggle with this in Ableton. I want to be able to set up my progression, and play/record it with the bind feature - then bounce that midi data out to other instruments without using it as a midi trigger. I swore in scaler 1 I found a way to record the actual midi of the notes being generated instead of just the bindings that I'm playing.

Make sure to call up an instrument track in Logic, then add Scaler to MIDI EFFECTS, you can find it in the subfolder for PLUG-IN BOUTIQUE. Then add whatever sampler you want into the INSTRUMENT field.
aha! Yes I was in Ableton and it doesn't seem to be avail in Ableton? Weird. Anyway loaded up in Logic and it's working great. You really sparked my curiosity about that "Mod" tab. So looking forward to using that! Thanks much, Jeff!
