Scaler 2 without a shadow of doubt, is one of the best most inspiring programs out there. It’s as important (maybe more) than Splice for forming new ideas. Incredible!!!
What makes this video so worthwhile is the fact that it's bringing Scaler2 more into the everyday, practical realm of operation. This is a great reference video for those of us who use Scaler2 a little less frequently than we'd like to admit! Thanks so much for such a helpful video, Tristan!
Workflow is excellent. I’ve just written down the steps for future song writing, as I use guitar as a starting point for most of my creations. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this; Scaler is awesome. It would be nice if the volume of the built-in sounds of scaler could be changed - it's very quiet compared to any other sound, so simply turning up the master volume is not really an option.
@@jimrogers7425 the only workaround I can think of is to record your guitar track then export it as a .wav file then you can drag the audio file onto Scaler to detect it. Pain in the arse though.
Could have been a great tutorial but mostly the biggest part of the screen is covered by ableton live. I wish you could do that tutorial in standalone mode of scaler 2. For a new scaler 2 users it is also sometimes not clear if a feature belongs to scaler 2 or abletons daw.
Thx for this video! I am using Scaler together with guitar and this is just what I was looking for! I have a question though: Scaler records the recognized chords from the audio. But it doesn't seem to record how long that chord is played. So how can I create f.e. a midi track that is "in sync"? When I play back the chord progression only it is out of sync with the audio. Or did I miss something?
@@duesenberger ahh ok. couple of things you can do. if you drop the chords into the bottom pattern area you can change the length, octave etc. alternatively, drag and drop the chords into your DAW on a separate midi track with your VST of choice and you can then quantise the progression and play with the note lengths to humanise it a bit more. hope this helps :)
Awesome it is. But - For Non Instrument Players Guitar or Piano - There is a Chasm Say for now impossible to cross. How then would one use Scaler 2 and get the exact outcome. It will be more than Awesome if you could suggest a Solution - Specially how to get the Finger Picking Pattern incorporated into the Notes Playing and Also Strumming Pattern used e.g Up / Down Strokes and the Strings being Played in the chords (Without having to play guitar or keyboard) . you can do this by using the performance section of scaler and using your chord progression to create phrasing and arpeggiation. you could run multiple instances of scaler and either use the built in guitar effect, or route to an external instrument like kontakt, which was used in the video. you can do all of this without even picking up an instrument.
Any DAW (digital audio workstation) will work, GarageBand or Cubasis (on iPad )for example. Though I think it needs to be said that the audio detection is the weakest feature in scaler 2 compared to midi input. In fact I haven’t had any success with it…
Great video man. What I would like to know is could you control N.I Strummed Acoustic on the fly so that you can change the chords inside of scaler as opposed to changing chords and then having to drag them out again etc?
Of course, just use the Voice Grouping profile in Scaler which matches the NI Instrument trigger range (C2-B3 from memory or could be C3-B4) and throw whatever chords from within Scaler to NI Strummed Acoustic!
Great video. I've learnt quite a bit from that. However, I use Studio One 5 and I'm struggling to figure out how to capture the audio from my guitar with audio detection. I'm not sure it's even possible with Studio One
Have you tried setting sidechain to the audio track your guitar is connected to? Not tried this myself yet, but also a S1 user and wondering how this works... perhaps you can set audio inputs directly in scaler?
@@DevinGalaudet1 Yes - in Studio One you should also have the AUDIO version of Scaler in your Effects (as opposed to the instrument version in instruments). You can just have this as an insert on an audio channel and play into it.! Works too :)
You could use midi capture (the button bottom right) and drag and drop straight to you your DAW. Or with Bass performance on just drag all the chords straight to your daw! Feel free to join the community over at forum.scalerplugin.com for help from the great Scaler community over there!
I understood most of your tutorial Tristan but got a bit lost on the synchronising with your original audio given that you didn't select all the chords that were detected. What happened to the original audio? Was that superseded by the later stuff. Surely the syncing with the DAW doesn't compensate for any chords that were not detected correctly and therefore never used in the final chord progression? Although I could be wrong, my guess is you have to re-record the audio using the final choice of chord progression. Am I right?
Hi Andy. Scaler uses a default chord duration of 2 beats which you can set via the settings screen. So, each chord plays for 2 beats by default. At 4:35 in the video I open the Edit page and use the Playback Timings panel and double the playback length of the first 7 chords to play for twice as long, so the first 7 chords play for 4 beats or one bar, and the last two play for 2 beats. So it doesn’t matter how many chords you use in the final progression. As long as they each play for an appropriate amount of time. And I don’t think anything was re-recorded, however the lead melody however was recorded after the chord progression was chosen. Hope this clears up everything!
Thanks. I noticed the Guitar charts view are highlighting in your playback but there not doing so for me 2.7. Is there a button to switch this on/off smwh?
Yes they are also doing so in 2.7. You either need to be triggering the chords or be in DAW Sync mode (right click on the play button in section C). If you need any other help head over to forum.scalerplugin.com
@@SchoolofSynthesis Strange. DAW sync mode helps. It highlights but not accurately. Its out of sync. Looping 3 simple chords here and it only highlights 2 of them. Thanks. Yes I posted it there too. No replies yet.
Hi Shane. The music in this video was written with a real electric guitar using just Scaler and Ableton Live (but any DAW will do). No MIDI guitar or anything like that. You’ll just need an audio interface with an instrument input to connect your electric guitar so Scaler can analyse the audio from your playing.
Would it be possible to somehow use an already recorded track into scaler 2 audio? I have some existing songs I want scaler 2 to help generate parts for
yes you can detect any audio input and scaler will generate Chords to go along with it. Dependind on your DAW, you just have to route the audio into scaler or add scaler instrument in the effect tab.
