I to will pick the kit every time, building and painting and knowing everything is tight, greased and adjusted correctly with my personal stamp is just something I don't want to miss out on.Really enjoyed this and your other informative "real world" vids.Thx!
With the rtr as far as I know they all came from factory with dry gears which pissed me off a bit. I had to tear mine apart and add grease to the portal gears, ring and pinion and all the tranny gears. So I guess I should of just bought the kit that way I would know it was done properly
In the most competitive sports vehicles are built specifically for the race. The stock rig is suited for specific terrain, yours is built with other terrain in mind. Just shows that the platform is decent regardless. Axial did a good job when they designed this rig IMO.
I'm sure one can find grippier tires and more compliant foams. But after 5 solid months of daily driving my RTR Capra on my all-natural, all rock rock-garden the OEM tires are far from needing replacement due to wear. The only 'upgrade' I have made is a $12 set of stainless steel skid plates for the 'pumpkins' so the rocks don't wear holes in the bottoms like they did my TRX-4 after 6 months of driving it in the same rock-garden. I truly love my RTR TRX-4 Sport that initiated me into this avocation, but the lack of need for either performance or appearance upgrades makes the RTR Capra a H U G E win-win IMO.
I really want a second Capra kit as a trail truck. No brass, and a 16t pinion. My current Capra is just like yours. Heavy low and front. The stock servo is decent. 200 oz/ in and I bet it’s actually more. Please include in your next servo test, if possible. It’s definitely sufficient for a trail truck without 2 extra pounds up front and low. Very quiet and seemed to never struggle. Definitely no Traxass 2075 lol with 125 oz/mile. Keep up the great work dude. You’re down to earth and immersed in the hobby just like us all. Wish you 2 million subscribers instead of some pud, bud.
I'm thinking building one. But trying to figure out motors and pinion. Hit speeds closer to 20mph on flatter grounds. Vs getting a cheap one like 12429 or 140016v2 Want to be able to crossfire /elrs and fpv it around the neighborhood woods
@ 8:38 I believe the longer wheelbase definitely worked against you. Sweet Rigs tho great vid, Id love to see the RTR without those slicks on it lol, maybe swap the tires one day if you have time & lets see how the rtr does with a simple tire swap "👍🏼
Interesting comparison! Love my stock Capra. Such an impressive and well designed car. Constantly surprises me with the things it can climb up. Wonder what a simple tire swap would do for a future video. The stock slicks are awesome at rocks, maybe not so on those mixed terrain tires the mod car had.
And I’m thinking about trx4 front axle so I can unlock the front diff. I have extra aluminum aluminum axles laying around and literally like a dozen dead stock Traxxas mini servos that are dead. Them servos are the real undeal. I’d use a reefs 99 to unlock the diff and go from there. I love my savoy 2290 but it doesn’t see much water in my trx because it sits so high, but it’s loud. The reefs 777 is stronger, waterproof and quiet. End rambling. You rock brother!
I just got a used Capra, with brass on all corners,.stock whls,& tires..I drill lower spring cups to lower almost 1/2" more..had excellent crawl..but really had to think out my line..
Try the UC Fab conversion to a standard axial 3 gear trans and a standard dig servo with a flat skid. New tires and some heavier shock oil will also help with unloading.
I am a late starter to rc but I cannot in all honesty spend 400$ \£ to buy a rc crawler then another ?£$ extra to get it to perform like you want it so I chose to build from scratch and save a shed load of cash
HAY WE MET AT THE XMAX BASH WHIT JONATHON. I GAVE YA A CUP IF YOU REMEMBER. WHAT WAS TH COST TO BUILD THE MODDED CAPRA ? IV GOT AN axial wraith NOW THAT JONATHON HAD . I ATTEMPTING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAY I WANT TO GO .
Joe how does a capra do compared to lcg builds and basic crawler trucks in general ie Vanquish phoenix, trx4 sport, ecto, Basecamp etc? I've been thinking about building one but can't really get a good answer on outright crawler ability and or backwoods trailing, everyone refers to it as the Goat but is it really that good, Thanks
The Capra has an advantage for technical stuff but the other cars you mentioned are the jack of all trades and would probably be my pick for trailing. A lot of them come with multiple speeds too which is nice. The Capra can get loud and be unpleasant sounding when speeding around through the dirt.
Question. So i just did the 4ws swap and i have overdrive front portal gears when I try to do rear steer only it just drags it won't even make the turn. So should I just even out the gears to prevent this?
Hey Joe (where you goin with that RC in your hand) 😁😁 I have been watching your channel for a long time. You have become one of my very favorite, inspirational and entertaining sources of information for everything about RC! First of all, THANK YOU FOR THAT!!! I have been through a lot with my Capra, but I LOVE the way it runs right now! In a nutshell, lowered the shocks to 80mm, and put on some 137mm Boggers to get the clearance back, also put lead in the beadlocks and brass on all 4 portals. Now it'll go just about anywhere and do just about anything I want it to!! I'd really like to put that rear steer on it though!! Could you please tell me where to get that servo mount on the rear axle? Thank you SO MUCH for everything you've been doing!! You got all the bases covered, that's for sure!! 👍👍👍👏👏👏
OK, Thanks! I'll have to "Take A Look" and get on that real soon! That's the one thing I'm really curious about that's still missing! As a side note, I got a HH Crawl Master Pro in there and a HW 1080, which I am very pleased with.
Hey Joe, I forgot all about the servo! Anyway, I have to say I am very happy with it. I've never seen it on any of your videos or heard you talk about it. But judging from my personal experience would definitely recommend trying it out. It's a Power HD B2.
Hey Joe, it's me again. While we're at it I'd like to ask you one more question. What would you suggest as a Servo Mount for the rear axle on an SCX10.2? THANKS!!
Do you have a list of what all youve done to the modded one and what you would and wouldn't do? I've been thinking of stretching mine and going to 2.2s
@@ExocagedRC Any chance to get an update video talking about what all you have done to it in the past and where its at now, what you would have skipped trying and what worked out? Im new to all this and looking forward to modding my capra so it would be awesome to see what to skip haha.
I have the pen spring mod and Element Enduro gray springs. Most importantly, switch out the bottom shock retainers. Now my links are dead parallel and the truck is very stable at speed....speed being around 7 mph or so lol. I’m really excited to install my Axe system. Also, I usually don’t go for mods like a CNC transmission case, but this truck kinda needs it. I hate having to leave the gear covers so loose and I broke down today due to it. At least it will be brushless power running through the gears. That was my first problem with this truck and it’s been ran for a while so I can’t complain about it.
All those upgrades are nice if your doing competitions but don’t seem to add up to a lot of worth for the typical RC person unless you just want to brag about what you have in it. Also lowing the center of gravity is generally a good thing to a degree but even in real vehicles that clearance is more of a positive then a negative.
Exocaged RC you did optimus 3 vs super lite and optimus 3 vs optimus 2. Anyway no big deal I think optimus would win! Excited to see what mods you go with on the rtr.
For me its probably going to get new wheels and tires, leaning towards the Proline Flat Irons, not sure why but the Krawlers with the right foams in predator compound is awesome
Stock is surprisingly capable, but 100% clear win for your modded vehicle. Sure there was the one climb, but forgivable considering how much easier your modded version got through everything else.

Mr. Exo. I have built a capra matching yours. Somewhat. My question is on the axe 2300 system with triple 4 servos an futaba dig servo. Should I run a external.bec. im currently 2 days in ,no problems. Should we put a bec in for dig. Or other servo
jaj252 I’ll let Exo answer, but you can get away without a BEC. However, you will probably experience brown outs and tax the internal BEC of the ESC. Try to find a servo that runs straight off the battery. That’s my plan.
@@daveklein4399 thank u for replying,,,I haven't had a problem yet. Bit dont want 1 lol. I'll install the dig servo soon maybe run a bec to that 1. I currently have 2 new 444 so I wont be doing any other servo anytime soon
You’d want the BEC to power the 444. The dig servo doesn’t pull much power at all. But both servos plus a light bar is a gray area for an internal BEC that’s 3 amps. The Mamba X has an 8 amp BEC which works lovely IMO, but Hobbywing is leaving the decision to us. I’d use a BEC to get the best outta that 444 if I were you.

Capra is my dream crawler build. But gonna be a while for the budget to handle. Loved this video, thx
It’s a great build and one you’ll be happy with for sure. And you can mod it anyway you like, depending on what you wanna do with it.
Good fella',it'll be so much better when you get it. It's a great build. Let me suggest a HobbyWing 1080 ESC,they're amazing . Good luck.
I have a 1080 in all my brushed crawlers. It’s perfect and silent. Best value out there for us. Wheels cost more.
I have a list already started. 1080 was my ESC of choice. Hyrax tires. Holmes hobbies crawler motor. Different shocks for rear. So far.
Probably a Reefs 444 servo. Although expensive not sure if I should choose a different one for the price or not.

2700kv 11t pinion do it?
Surely with dig the stock one would have turned tighter
